SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b03jznqg)
Series 17
Gymnopédie No 1
Pascal Rogé is one of the world's greatest interpreters of French piano music.
From the seat of a concert hall piano, he leads us through a personal and musical journey of Erik Satie's Gymnopédies.
You may not immediately know the title but in hearing just the first few notes, you are most likely to know the music.
It's a collection of short, atmospheric pieces of which Gymnopédie No.1 is perhaps the most popular.
Music historian and author Mark Prendergast has studied Satie's work and reveals the complex character of the man who revolutionised the 19th century classical music of Europe.
Melbourne based artist Colin Duncan reflects on the music's 'physical form which takes you into space and time' and for him inspired a body of work created in braille.
Murder Mystery writer Cathy Ace remembers how this meditative music could shut out the noise of the city as she sped around London in her old brown mini.
Mathematician and author Ian Stewart explores the mathematics of this special piece and how music can touch our soul.
Series about pieces of music with a powerful emotional impact.

Malcolm Williamson, Master of the Queen's music, had been hired as the film's composer. But all was not well. Williamson, a notoriously difficult and complicated man, was under extreme pressure; it was the Queen's jubilee year and he was over commissioned.
When the film's conductor, Marcus Dods, arrived looking for the film's score he found to his horror that all that existed were two small sketches of music which amounted to no more than seven minutes of screen time.
With an expensive orchestra and recording studio booked for the following week, the film's future looked to be in jeopardy.

Wonderlands
Long ago, in a land not far away, children's books were a neglected corner of the book world - marginalised, unimportant, an afterthought.
Today, one in every three books sold in the UK is a children's book. We're spending more money on children's books than ever before and an increasing number of adults turned to children's fiction for comfort reading in lockdown.
Writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce explores how and why books for children have become central to our reading culture.
It’s a Cinderella story - a tale of humble beginnings, unexpected transformations and glittering success.
We have a rich and deep children’s book culture, going back to the classics like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe and The Railway Children - stories which still live with us, adapting and evolving for new generations.
Frank explores where they come from and how two World Wars and societal change in the 1960s shaped children’s books, and our understanding of childhood itself. He explores the spectacular success of bestselling novels by JK Rowling and Phillip Pullman at the turn of the Millennium, which rocket-fuelled children’s publishing.
Traditionally we've preferred to see children's books as historic and separate from the wider culture but in fact, says Frank, writing for children has always been deeply engaged with society.
From Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, through to Malorie Blackman's best-selling Noughts and Crosses series, these authors create mirrors for young readers to reflect on life’s big questions.
As Philip Pullman says, "There are some subjects which are too large for adult fiction; they can only be dealt with adequately in a children's book."’

The Storyteller by Julianne Pachico
Julianne Pachico's story is set in Medellin, the city renowned for the notorious drug cartel of the same name.
A Canadian woman is invited to dinner at a Colombian doctor's family home.
Events unfold awkwardly across the evening and it won't be long before a series of secrets and lies will be exposed shattering the lives of all.
Read by Joseph Balderrama.
** Julianne Pachico is a British-American writer who grew up in Cali, Colombia.
Her debut collection, Lucky, was published to critical acclaim early in 2017.
Each of the linked stories is set in Colombia between 1993 and 2013 which were especially violent years during the country's long conflict. The stories capture the harsh reality of growing up in a place where the guerrilla insurgency is never far from view, and at the same time they have a lyrical and hallucinatory quality to them that is both compelling and unsettling.

6. Fly Flamford
Jeff and Andy are awaiting their departure from Winifred Holtby International Airport, formerly RAF Flamford Heath, with a major repurposing in the 90s as Flamin’ Wheels Go-Kart Centre.
They’ve taken advantage of The Flamford Bugle’s 2-for-1 ticket offer to mark the “exciting new route” to Rome-Maremma by low budget airline AlexAir.
They’re soon joined by Fish Shop Frank, Copper Kettle proprietor and nervous flyer Joyce Rickles and Flamford’s Number One aged curmudgeon, Mr Truepenny - all of them with an eye for a bargain and all of them fellow 2-for-1 ticketeers.
Frank has already started on the pints (“What? I’m on holiday”), Joyce has been on a Flying-With-Confidence course (“My mantra is ‘Turnips’”) and Mr Truepenny is behaving more oddly than normal (“I dropped an E earlier and I think it’s kicking in”). They soon find cheapest is not always best.
As the flight delays mount, so tempers rise and questions are asked.
When’s the plane leaving? What is Frank’s secret? Who is Simon? And why does WH Smith sell water in litre bottles which you cannot possibly finish before you reach the security gate?

THU 09:00 Ashley Blaker's Hyperfixations (m002f9g7)
1. 17th Century English History
"To be clear, I was never invited to join the Bullingdon Club, which is a shame because, as a Jew, we’re not allowed to put any pig into us, but there are no rules about the other way round."
In early 2023, Ashley Blaker was diagnosed with autism and ADHD. One of the most significant aspects of his diagnosis is his propensity for hyperfixation in special interests, which he now realises has entirely shaped his past and which he uses to mine comedy for this new series.
It’s no exaggeration to say Ashley’s life has been driven by obsessions. He has variously been a schoolboy with a love of Star Wars and Doctor Who, a wannabe comedian who performed on the London comedy circuit at 16, a trivia nerd who appeared on University Challenge, a history PhD candidate at Cambridge, a BBC producer of hit comedy shows including Little Britain, a fanatical football fan who saw Liverpool play across England and Europe, a strictly Orthodox Jew who went to synagogue three times a day for over ten years, a father of six, and latterly, a heavily tattooed renegade in hiding from his former community.
In this series, Ashley takes a comedic look at each of his obsessions in turn, merging personal memoir with a delve into subjects which have yet to be covered in stand-up comedy shows. The result is a series which, while based on the broader topic of neurodiversity, covers it with the lightest of touches and is focused more on Ashley’s individual hyperfixations, lifting the lid on many of the different worlds he’s inhabited.
Episode 1 is the (probably) surprising subject of 17th Century English history which Ashley studied at both Oxford and Cambridge where he sought to become the first Jewish expert in 17th century church history. Ashley examines the strange world of academia among the dreaming spires and asks why, when all his peers were drinking and having sex, he was completely consumed with obscure clergymen from the 1630s and spent hours in the Guildhall Library, House of Lords and Lambeth Palace trying to work out how to use a microfiche and then struggling to read some very bad 17th century handwriting.
"There are almost no mentions of Jews because we were expelled from England in 1290 and only allowed back by Oliver Cromwell in 1655. So, it was a golden age if you were an antisemite, but a nightmare if you fancied a bagel."

FRI 10:30 Scientists Go To Hollywood (b00tj5qk)
Adam Rutherford heads to tinsel town to talk to the scientists who have left the lab for the glamour of the film set.
Although the silver screen may not be known for its scientific accuracy, in recent years Hollywood does seem to have come calling, where science is concerned. A growing number of scientists seem to be taking time out of their day job to advise Hollywood directors and producers on the portrayal of science, and scientists, in some very well known films and TV series.
Adam visits the set of one of the most well known science based TV shows, CSI New York to meet the writer and co-producer, himself a former forensic scientist. He talks to physicist Brian Cox about his role as science advisor to the Danny Boyle directed movie Sunshine. He meets the new wave of Hollywood movie makers who are turning to the real life scientists to help improve not only the image of science on screen, but to inspire some of their most fantastical plot line, and finds out whether factually incorrect science in the movies really matters?
According to the US National Academy of Science, it does. So much so that they have now set up a programme specifically designed to help their scientists work with the entertainment industry, to improve and foster a positive image of science on screen.
Adam meets the producer of one of last year's biggest Hollywood blockbusters about his ambition to keep the science fact in the science fiction as accurate as possible, and how the scientists he worked with came up with some far more intriguing plot twists and turns than anything his writers could have dreamt up.
