SAT 00:30 Dreamers of the Black Metropolis (b01r113s)
Rita Coburn Whack reveals how a generation of artists forged a new identity amidst the Depression in Chicago's 'Black Metropolis'.
By the 1930s, Chicago was the promised land for the largest internal migration in American history. Waves of black American's left the South for a city that promised opportunity and deliverance from the murderous land of Jim Crow.
On the city's Southside black owned businesses, newspapers and clubs helped define a city within a city that resounded to the music of giants like Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith.
This burgeoning 'Black Metropolis' sparked an artistic renaissance that outlasted Harlem, nurturing painters, sculptors, poets and printmakers.
Largely rejected by the White American art world, able to study only in a few places and barely able to exhibit in their own city these visual artists forged a new identity in the Black Metropolis.
The Depression also birthed new links between both white and black, the talk was revolutionary, the politics incendiary and the desire to represent the race, to redefine their place in this white world and to reclaim dignity, drove many.
In 1940, at the height of Roosevelt's New Deal 'Negro Art' was firmly on the map with both The American Negro Exposition and the triumphant opening of the South Side Community Art Center by the First Lady in the heart of Chicago's thriving Bronzeville.
Now, funded by the WPA, artists like Charles White, Elizabeth Catlett, Eldizor Cortor, Margaret Burroughs, fledgling photographer Gorden Parks and young poet Gwendolyn Brooks had a space to call their own.
Bold murals, social realist depictions of ordinary black life and meditations on what it meant to be black in America filled the walls whilst an entire community learnt art in a time of austerity.

Conclusion of Nick Baker’s collection of programmes and interviews reflecting on how the impact of technology has changed, from the dawn of language to the age of virtual reality.
In the last of three episodes, Nick looks at bigger changes in our physical perceptions, and experiences a new medium – Virtual Reality, as developed in the BBC Virtual Reality hub.
But there’s a different, more subtle way in which digital technology changes our perception of personal space, and that idea’s probed in an edition of ‘THE DIGITAL HUMAN’ presented by Aleks Krotoski, called ‘Between’.
Then, a warning from literature, and from history.
Stephen Fry and Nick Baker discuss EM Forster’s 1909 novella, ‘THE MACHINE STOPS’, which envisages a physical world changed, if not destroyed by technology.
But what happens when that technology breaks down?

Richard Wilson
Actor and director Richard Wilson is castaway by Lauren Laverne.
Richard became a household name when he played the part of Victor Meldrew in the BBC TV sitcom One Foot in the Grave.
He was born in Greenock in Scotland in 1936. As a child he performed in amateur drama productions and harboured a secret desire to become an actor. He left school at 17 and trained as a laboratory technician at Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow.
Following National Service in Singapore, he moved to London and at the age of 27 successfully auditioned for a place at RADA. His first role was as a stonemason in Dr Finlay’s Casebook and he later reached a wider audience playing snooty Jeremy Parsons QC in the television series Crown Court.
Richard went on to carve out a successful theatre and television career as both an actor and director. He starred in the comedy Only When I Laugh and later in the series Tutti Frutti alongside Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane.
In 1990 he delighted audiences with his portrayal of the grumpy pensioner Victor Meldrew in One Foot in the Grave, with his catchphrase ‘I don’t believe it!’ – a phrase which has haunted Richard ever since. The series regularly attracted an audience of 17 million viewers and Richard won two BAFTAs for his performance.
Richard received an award for his outstanding contribution to film and television at the Scottish BAFTAs in 2013.

Episode 2
Ross Poldark's parliamentary colleagues need his support in London, while back in Cornwall, there is other news.
This story (Book 9 in the famous series of novels) rejoins the characters in 1812 – about ten years after the point where BBC TV’s hugely popular series concluded.
Omnibus of the last five of ten episodes abridged by Jill Waters and Isobel Creed.
Read by Richard Goulding.
Ross Poldark is now 52 and still happily married to Demelza, who is ten years younger than him. Their eldest son Jeremy is approaching 21 and their eldest daughter Clowance is 17, both of them navigating the changeable weather of first love.
The Poldark family is completed by young Isabella-Rose although neither Ross nor Demelza will ever forget the grief of losing their first born, Julia, before her third birthday.
A series of courtships begins their complicated dance, some fuelled by lust and others by love, money or ambition.
All this takes place against a backdrop of England’s continuing military campaign against Napoleon’s army in Spain and Portugal. The damage that war has done to the nation’s commerce and those who rely on it gives rise to political tensions which are played out in complex schemes of power and influence amongst the governing classes in London.
A world which seems so far away from the pressing concerns of Cornish life and which nevertheless beckons Ross to attend to his duties in parliament as an MP.
Take the chance to return to Cornwall and the passions of the Poldarks, reflecting on what marriage and courtship are really about and whether love can ever hope to conquer all.

Episode 6
When the Questers get drunk to celebrate Vidar's birthday, Sam tries once again to gain (albeit with customary cack-handedness) the affections of Penthiselea, much to her consternation.
Meanwhile, Lord Darkness is anxious to get one over his old nemesis, Kaybar the Maleficent, and so decides to do something really newsworthy and light the "Beacon of Doom".
If the "Beacon of Doom" is lit then the runes dictate that one of the Questers must do battle in hand-to-hand combat with Lord Darkness himself. And so, to impress Penthiselea, Sam volunteers to be that Quester.
Problem is, Sam doesn't have the first idea how to fight hand-to-hand. Fortunately, nor it seems, does Lord Darkness.
Should make for an interesting showdown then...

Rachel Parris: Austensibly Feminist
Comedian Rachel Parris, a Jane Austen fan and geek, assesses one of our greatest writer's feminist credentials.
Although Jane Austen wrote about a particular class of women at a particular period in our history , the portraits she drew have resonated with millions of subsequent readers. But rarely is she considered from a feminist perspective.
In this stand-up comedy show recorded in front of a live, virtual audience, Rachel Parris asks us to re-appraise Jane Austen's work and see it in a new light. Albeit a little irreverently.
Do Austen's books pass the Bechdel test? What do her sisters tell us about the sisterhood? What have her women got in common with women today and what can we learn from what Jane Austen had to say about marriage, men and money?

Tina C: Herstory
Episode 1
Country music star Tina C presents her life story, starting with her humble origins in deepest Tennessee.
She takes us all the way to where she stands today - a global feminist icon, and political powerhouse. And she can still knock out a tune or two too.
Tina will be joined on stage by a three-piece band who will help her recreate her biggest hits, and a special guest interviewer who will talk to her about her struggles.
In this first episode, Tina recalls her childhood. A humble start in life provides a rich seam of stories which fed into her early work. Family has always been important to Tina - as tracks like Hard Times, Don't Be Afraid to Start Crying, and Tramp on a Trampoline show.
From the moment her second album No Dick's As Hard As My Life was released, the world took notice of country music singer Tina C. Since then she has become a global brand.
Since 9/11 she's travelled the world 24/11 working for peace and being a poster girl for American democracy, selling that unique vision of hope to the rest of the world whether they want it or not.
Seductive and persuasive, she is here to recruit you to her world view. She is the living embodiment (and what a body) of soft power. Tina C. has performed in venues all over the world, with her own TV show and five series on BBC Radio. You can run but you can't hide from Tina C.

The writer and poet Ruth Padel is the great great granddaughter of Charles Darwin. Here, she goes on a deeply personal journey to find out more about the scientist and the man.

There were the deaths of three of his children, one of which affected him deeply and caused him to lose much of his religious belief. In addition, he had to cope with the death of his mother when he was a young boy - what effect did this have on him? Then, there was his deteriorating health and also the threat to his research underpinning the "Origin of Species"- an event which however, he managed to circumvent just in time.

All Things Must Pass at 50
In November 1970 a triple album was released by the Beatle previously known as ‘the Quiet One’.
George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass was unique, not because it was number one around the world, but because of its fascination with Eastern religion.
Growing up in the 1970s, musician and composer Nitin Sawhney was aware of George and his interest in Indian classical music, particularly his close connection with Ravi Shankar. He knew Harrison’s hit singles, but his most famous album, All Things Must Pass, remained unexplored.
Was this LP, written in the latter years of the 1960s already out of date in 1970, or was it in fact ahead of its time, with its heart-felt lyrics and religious themes?
Interviewees include:
Olivia Harrison
Michael Palin
Jools Holland
Biographers, Graeme Thomson and Joshua M. Greene
Keyboard player, Bobby Whitlock
Drummer, Alan White
Guitarist, Dave Mason

50 years on from the first Leeds West Indian Carnival in 1967, Colin Grant goes behind the scenes to explore its roots, and its aim to wash away the anti immigrant sentiment of the 1960s.
After the violence directed at black people in Nottingham and Notting Hill in the 1950s, and the naked racism expressed in Smethwick during the 1964 general election, a group of pioneering West Indians came up with a simple and defiant riposte: Carnival.
Colin Grant goes behind the scenes of Carnival to its Leeds West Indian HQ in Chapeltown - amidst the glue guns, sequins and feathers - to capture that moment of extraordinary transformation, 50 years on.
It was the birth of a tradition which, for one weekend in August, would wash away the bad taste of anti-immigrant sentiment with a burst of colour and flash of exuberance that would forever change Britain.
Grant travels to Leeds to talk with the pioneers and celebrate the endurance and growth of Carnival

The Boxer - Simon & Garfunkel
People who connect directly with the lyrics and have a deep personal connection to Simon & Garfunkel's masterpiece 'The Boxer' discuss what it means to them.
Seamus McDonagh is a former boxer. He describes the tumultuous time he had during and after his famous fight with Evander Holyfield in 1990. He also explains why he identifies closely with the song's lyrics.
Julie Nimoy is the daughter of Leonard Nimoy and co-producer of the film 'Remembering Leonard Nimoy' which tells the life story of this much loved actor, most famous for playing Mr Spock in Star Trek. The Boxer was his favourite song, and Julie describes exactly what it meant to him both throughout his life, and in its closing moments.
Gary Edward Jones is a singer-songwriter who for years rejected comparisons made of him to Paul Simon. Eventually, he embraced the likeness and his life changed after developing a show called 'Something About Simon - The Paul Simon Story'.

FRI 10:30 Picking Round Apples (b014qxbg)
Steve Carver lives the life of a seasonal apple picker on a farm in Herefordshire.
In his previous programmes for Radio 4 'Dancing Round the Mediterranean' and 'Touring Round Torquay' , Steve immersed himself in a new line of work, living alongside co-workers and experiencing their way of life.
Now he is 'Picking Round Apples' in Herefordshire:
For a week in mid-August, Steve gave up his home comforts and moved into a small campervan parked in the corner of a field in rural Herefordshire.
Every year a small band of retired people establish a make-shift and temporary, but close community. Every day, all day, they pick apples. The money they earn boosts their pensions, and a simple and quietly sociable life is also a great draw.
However it's hard work - bad backs, scratched arms, and sore feet are the wounds that must be borne.
The retired pickers live in their motor-homes for the summer, with many over-wintering in Spain when the weather begins to cool. No such luxury (or destination) for Steve - we gave him a basic campervan, with no electrical 'hook-up'; the use of a microwave in a farm-building, which also houses the showers and loos.
He was cold at night (trekking socks a necessity in bed, even in August), he got a little sick of microwave meals, but he enjoyed meeting the other pickers, appreciating what they meant by 'getting into the zone' of apple picking: reach... pick... put in bucket... reach... pick... put in bucket... almost - as Steve said - like a form of meditation.
Join Steve to find out how he got on 'Picking Round Apples' at Tillington Fruit Farm near Ledbury in Herefordshire.
