Fiona has been distant and her boyfriend Simon thinks he knows exactly what’s on her mind.
He decides to help her, and believes the best way to start is by casually bringing this private issue up in the weekly meeting.
What could possibly go wrong?
Continuing the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous, written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery.
It follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics.
Taking place entirely at their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and - most importantly - tell their stories.
Written and created by Pete Jackson.
Fiona .….. Rebecca Front
Simon .….. John Hannah
Julie .….. Sue Johnston
Danno .….. Paul Kaye
Andy ...... Johnny Vegas
Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.
Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

The meteorologist, John Hammond explores the way that science fiction has served as a barometer for our wonder, curiosity and sometimes anxiety about the environment. With expert insight from Sarah Dillon - Professor of Literature and the Public Humanities and Professor of Human Geography, Mike Hulme, we find out how writers imagined – sometimes very accurately – the changing world around them.
Today, we focus on the early decades of the 20th century, a period rich in technological optimism and environmental unease.
First, we hear E.M. Forster’s chillingly prescient 'The Machine Stops';
A world in which people can only communicate through a machine sounds like the internet today. But this story, written in 1909, takes us to a future where the machine has become an all-powerful God.

Post-War Interest
The meteorologist, John Hammond explores the way that science fiction has served as a barometer for our wonder, curiosity and sometimes anxiety about the environment. With expert insight from Sarah Dillon - Professor of Literature, we find out how writers imagined – sometimes very accurately – the changing world around them.
Today, we move forward to the mid-20th century, when environmental fears deepened and fiction imagined humanity facing dramatic ecological upheaval. J.G. Ballard’s visionary story 'The Drowned World' looks to a waterlogged future.
Graham White's adaptation of JG Ballard's novel, sees Earth's atmosphere destroyed.
As a scientific mission surveys England's drowned capitals before their final abandonment, two lovers find themselves reverting to a primitive state of consciousness.

Growing Awareness
The meteorologist, John Hammond explores the ways in which science fiction has served as a barometer for our wonder, curiosity and sometimes anxiety about the environment. With expert insight from Sarah Dillon - Professor of Literature and the Public Humanities at Cambridge University, we find out how writers imagined – sometimes very accurately – the changing world around them.
Today, we journey into the 1980s, when ecological thrillers were reflecting our environmental fears. We hear James Follett's gripping story, 'Ice.'
Eight thousand square miles of solid ice which have become detached from the Antarctic are drifting inexorably towards New York Harbour. The combined might of the US military seems powerless to avert the collision but if it occurs, the whole city will 'ring like a bell'.

Series 4
Wednesday's Child Is...
Multi-award winning comedian and author Mark Watson continues his probably doomed, but luckily funny quest to make sense of the human experience.
This series is about time - the days of the week, the stages of our existence - and the way we use it to make sense of things. We make our way through the working week, tonight considering 'hump day' - Wednesday. Wednesday's child, famously, is full of woe. Both Mark and Esther are in this category. Is the woe a real issue or merely a fairy tale? What is the bleakest joke ever told by a four-year-old? And what would Thomas Hardy make of this series?
Expect jokes, observations and interactions galore as Mark is aided, and sometimes obstructed, by the sardonic musical excellence of Flo & Joan. There's also a hand-picked comedy colleague each week - here, we welcome Esther Manito.

Mica Paris on Josephine Baker
For soul singer Mica Paris, when she first dreamt of becoming a singer it was Josephine Baker who inspired her most.
Baker was a young black American dancer who became an overnight sensation in Paris in 1925 after performing wild, uninhibited routines in the skimpiest of costumes.
So can Mica Paris make the case for Baker who wore a string of bananas and little else while performing the 'banana dance?
Joining presenter Matthew Parris to help tell the story of Josephine Baker is author Andrea Stuart.

THU 10:30 The Paris Bouquinistes (b00srktl)
Paris has many grand monuments dominating its skyline, but for regular visitors to the 'city of light' there’s a sight every bit as ingrained into its terroir as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe and Sacre Coeur - that of the riverside booksellers.
Having plied their trade for centuries on the banks of the River Seine, Les Bouqinistes can count Presidents (including Mitterand and Thomas Jefferson) as regular customers, and boast a proud history of providing a source of literatures thought subversive to the prevailing authorities of the day.
More recently, many have branched out from books to supplement their income, offering plastic souvenirs instead of Balzac, plastic tat in place of Monserrat - a practice the city council, worried about tarnishing the image of playground Paris, has fought against.
Kirsty Lang takes a long stroll along the Seine to meet some of the latest crop and discover how confident they feel about the future prosperity of their time-honoured trade.

The Hallelujah Chorus
The Hallelujah chorus from Handel's Messiah is stirring, emotional and unmistakable.
The Alzheimer's Society runs a group called 'Singing for the Brain'. It's for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s and their carers who come together to sing in a group. As music is tied so closely to emotional memories, often lyrics and music remain firmly fixed in the brain, while other memories have died away.
Julia Burton recalls the power of the Hallelujah Chorus, as performed at a special event by Singing for the Brain groups in Wiltshire and Dorset.
Mrs Vera Fiton, whose late husband - Ted - had dementia talks about how important the weekly singing group was for both of them.
Carol Pemberton, of the Birmingham-based a capella quintet 'Black Voices', took part in the reopening concert of Birmingham Town Hall in 2007. The programme director suggested they sing The Messiah, but not as Handel intended, rather a daring interpretation arranged by Quincy Jones, called the 'Soulful Messiah'. It's a soul/gospel version which has to be heard to be believed! Carol describes performing it as one of the biggest highs of her career to date.
Jennifer Blakeley runs Alphabet Photography, a photo company based in Niagara Falls in Canada. She came up with the idea of staging a Flash Mob to promote her company. The Hallelujah Chorus had long been a favourite piece, and she - along with her local choir - set up a flash-mob in a local shopping mall. The result was emotional, extraordinary... and achieved so much more than the intended aim to boost her business. Even passers-by joined in., while others cried as emotions ran high. And the resulting You Tube video has now attracted over 37 million hits.
Paul Spicer, composer, conductor and organist, describes the historical backdrop to Handel's exhilarating composition.
Series exploring famous pieces of music and their emotional appeal.

FRI 10:30 Punk, the Pistols and the Provinces (b07byvp2)
Mark Hodkinson looks at the impact of punk rock outside of London and, in particular, in Yorkshire where the Sex Pistols played their first and last gigs outside the capital.
Punk is viewed principally as a London phenomenon. The Sex Pistols in particular are synonymous with the capital, but their UK touring career outside the capital was book-ended by two shows more than 200 miles away.
On Wednesday 19 May 1976, six months before the release of their first single, the Sex Pistols performed at Sayer’s nightclub in the sleepy market town of Northallerton in North Yorkshire. Just 19 months later, on Christmas Day 1977, the band made their last UK appearance, at Ivanhoe’s, a small club in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
Music fan and experienced journalist/broadcaster, Mark Hodkinson, visit both towns and speaks to people who were at the gigs. He plots the impact of punk in the provinces where thousands of disgruntled teenagers heeded The Clash’s entreaty to the ‘faraway towns’ to ‘come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls’ ("London Calling").
Brian Simpson was the DJ at Sayer’s which, in the weeks leading up to the Sex Pistols visit, had played host to Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders and The Searchers. Along with Steve Williams, who was also at the gig, he remembers people leaving the club in droves when the Sex Pistols began playing. ‘‘We had no idea who they were,’’ he says. ‘‘Northallerton was suddenly at the forefront of punk rock but we had no idea that we were. It was about two weeks later when I saw their picture in one of the music papers that I realised I’d seen them play.’’

Modern Understanding
The meteorologist, John Hammond explores how science fiction has served as a barometer for our wonder, curiosity and sometimes anxiety about the environment. With expert insight from Sarah Dillon - Professor of Literature and the Public Humanities and Professor of Human Geography Mike Hulme, we find out how writers imagined – sometimes very accurately – the changing world around them.
We explore near-future anxieties, when climate tensions reach boiling point in John Lanchester's 'The Wall', a stark drama of survival, isolation, and a world reshaped by rising seas.
Ravaged by the Change, an island nation has built the Wall, a high concrete barrier around its entire coastline. Joseph Kavanagh, a new Defender, has one task: to protect his section of the Wall from the Others, the desperate souls who are trapped on the rising seas beyond and are trying to get in. Failure will result in death or a fate perhaps worse: being put to sea and made an Other himself.

Produced by Mair Bosworth
Abridged for radio by Eileen Horne
And then following our drama - John's joined by Dr. Jennifer Francis, a Senior Atmospheric Scientist, to learn about the surprising effects of a warming world.
