SAT 00:00 Soul Music (b04tjdls)
Series 19

La Boheme

"La Boheme is a work of genius, for me it's the perfect opera. There's not a bar or a word or anything you'd want to alter. It just gets to you"

- Opera Director John Copley CBE.

Soul Music ventures back into the Parisian winter of Puccini's beloved 'La Boheme' where legendary Opera Director John Copley CBE reflects on his 40 years of bringing this tale of friendship, love and loss to the stage of London's Royal Opera House.

Alongside his memories of sharing pasta with a young Pavarotti we hear the stories from those whose lives have been touched by - and often reflect - the essence of this most popular of operas.

From the romantic gesture of a probationary constable serenading his soon to be bus conductress wife in 1950's Torquay to the moment that a devoted husband passed away - La Boheme has touched the lives of opera lovers around the world.

Featuring interviews with:

* Author Mavis Cheek
* Opera devotees, Ray Tabb and Nancy Rossi

Producer: Nicola Humphries

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2014.

SAT 00:30 Who The Wild Things Are (b00c5j0j)
What is Maurice Sendak's classic children's book "Where the Wild Things Are" all about?

Philip Glassborow talks with Sendak's British editor, Judy Taylor, to his long-time friend, the distinguished writer and playwright Tony Kushner and to the American children's literature expert Leonard Marcus, who takes him back to the haunts of Sendak's American childhood in Brooklyn.

He is astonished to discover that in all the extensive press, radio and TV coverage of Sendak, nobody has ever thought to consult any children.

Every great children's book, has a world beyond its creator and here the Year 2 children of an Oxfordshire primary school have their say. Angry mothers and fathers with big hairy feet both feature in their interpretations of who the Wild Things really are.

With a reading by Henry Goodman and extensive use of Jewish Klezmer music, this programme will shed new light on who the Wild Things really are and act as a fitting legacy to the late, great master.

Producer Beaty Rubens

Series 1

To Put It Another Way

Roberta’s networking as Michael’s part-time, unpaid manager is finally paying off and she is beginning to get her husband some serious industry traction.

She lines up an audition for the prestigious topical panel show, To Put It Another Way. Unfortunately, this lands Michael in a bear pit of bullying stand up comedians who are used to the gladiatorial nature of these shows. Encountering a bitter, aggressive stand-up is enough to put Michael off being a comedian for good.

As the restructuring process at work comes to a climax (being re-interviewed for the job he already has) Michael is at a very low ebb.

Feeling like a comedy failure after acting as a punch bag at the panel show run through, he is now certain he is for the chop.

In spite of the battering he received in front of an audience at the TV run through, he receives encouragement from stand-up comic Natalie Duke, who gives Michael an idea that might change everything. Could he really could give up the day job?

Roberta is pushing Michael hard to take the plunge and use the platform his Room Next Door following has created to forge a comedy career, with her as his full-time manager, of course. But it seems that she is far more keen to ditch her secure day job than Michael is, especially when his boss at the kitchen worktop company delivers his plan to reorganise the company.

Will Michael take the plunge? Will Roberta take the plunge? Will you take the plunge and give it a listen?

SAT 16:00 John Wyndham - The Chrysalids (b01l5qc7)
1. Genetic Mutation

Genetic mutation has devastated the world.

In the emergent bleak, primitive society, any deviation is seen as the work of the devil, ruthlessly hunted out and destroyed.

In law abiding, God-respecting Waknuk anyone who does not conform to the 'norm' must keep their deviation secret or face the consequences of discovery.

John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic sci-fi classic.

Written in 1955, it explores the dangers inherent in discrimination and the threats posed by religious fundamentalism.

The 'Old People' who caused the apocalypse are depressingly like us: ' They were shut off by different languages and different beliefs. They created vast problems then buried their heads in the sands of idle faith.'

The children of the future (the Chrysalids) are able to 'think-together' and so can rise above the selfish violence and conflicting religions of the past.

Wyndham's story of a group of persecuted teenagers is more timely than ever in our post-Fukushima, war-riven, genetically engineered and religiously divided world.

Annie Nightingale

Annie Nightingale is castaway by Lauren Laverne.

Annie was BBC Radio 1’s first female presenter and its longest-serving DJ, celebrating her 50th anniversary at the station in 2020.

Born and brought up in south west London, she fell in love with the romance and mystery of radio through her father’s meticulous tuning of their home set to broadcasts from exotic places like Prague and Hilversum. On leaving school at 17, she spent a year on a journalism course in central London.

After relocating to Brighton, she worked her way up through local newspapers to the national press and magazines and eventually, by the mid-1960s, to TV. She interviewed the Beatles as a young journalist, and gave early support to artists including David Bowie, Ian Dury, Eminem and Primal Scream.

In 1970, she was the first woman DJ to join Radio 1 with a Sunday evening show. From 1978 to 1982, Annie was the sole female presenter on the BBC TV music show The Old Grey Whistle Test, the only woman to have held the job. Her excitement for new music and musical genres from acid house to grime, never wavered.

Her weekly overnight Radio 1 show received countless awards from Caner of the Year to Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which she received for services to radio.

Annie had a son and a daughter from her first marriage. She was twice divorced and lived in London.

She died aged 85 in January 2024.

SUN 06:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b00zt5xr)
Series 2

Wallace

It was the great travel books written in the 19th century by Alfred Russel Wallace that inspired Sir David Attenborough himself to achieve great things in the realm of natural history.

But Attenborough tells us that Wallace was more than just a great travel writer.

His power of meticulous observation and recording as he explored many parts of the world were in the highest league imaginable, even for Victorian standards - and his power of analysis very much in line with Darwin, his great contemporary.

Wallace independently came up with a theory of evolution that was in parallel to Darwin's thinking - two field naturalists breaking huge conventions of the time and coming up with the single most important theory in Biology. How did they resolve the conflict between themselves?

Written and presented by David Attenborough

Key characters in the canine society include Atticus, a Neapolitan Mastiff who naturally emerges as the group leader; Majnoun, a black poodle who is reluctant to trust other dogs; and Princess, a mongrel who embraces her language skills to become a poet.

MON 10:30 21 Shades of Noir: Lee Child on John D MacDonald (b07x6j4n)
As the author of the internationally renowned Jack Reacher series, Lee Child knows how to draw his readers into a story.

And for decades he's been intrigued by the unusual life of John D MacDonald.

Born in 1916, MacDonald was from a comfortable Pennsylvanian family. He went to Harvard and worked in naval intelligence during The Second World War, mustering out as a Lieutenant Colonel. It was what the British would call "a good war".

But Lee Child has always been confused by what happened next. With the pick of General Motors, IBM or maybe even The Pentagon before him - this Harvard MBA promptly spent five months, sitting at a table and hammering out pulp fiction, losing five stone in the process.

After 800,000 words and constant toil he managed to sell a story for $25 dollars.

Writing under dozens of pen-names John D rode the paperback boom, crafting more than 60 novels in all and creating what Lee Child considers to be his greatest creation - the 21 novels featuring his world-weary "salvage consultant" and righter of wrongs, Travis McGee.

Lee Child considers the mystery at the heart of John D's work, and the mysterious life of one of popular fiction's most enigmatic authors.

It's Just Work

Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam play a couple who have been married 'forever'.

Children of the 1960s, they're still free spirits, drawn together by their passion for music and each other. Their recognisable warm and witty conversations dance around everything from health scares, jealousy and confessions, to TV incompatibility and sourdough bread.

In this episode, Joanna gets distracted by a work project, which happens to be with a man who just happens to be much younger and rather more exciting than Roger.

When Roger complains about being pushed out of her life, he's told, in no uncertain terms, 'it's just work'.

But is it?

Written for Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam by award-winning comedy writer and journalist Jan Etherington.

Jan has been married for 34 years to Gavin Petrie, with whom she has created many hit Radio 4 Extra and TV series (Second Thoughts, plus Next of Kin, Faith in the Future, The Change),

TUE 10:30 Mao's Little Red Book Goes West (b06z5g7j)
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Cultural Revolution in 2016, David Aaronovitch explored the extraordinary story of how Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book captured the imagination of the West.

A collection of Mao’s quotations, packaged with a red vinyl cover, the book is an iconic piece of design and one of the world’s most widely distributed texts.

In Britain, it was a massive hit.

David hears from comedian and former Maoist Alexei Sayle who sold the book in Liverpool.

Activist and former Labour councillor Linda Bellos admits that, while she carried the Little Red Book as a teenager, she didn’t really read it and was more interested in being trendy.

The Little Red Book was hugely fashionable in late 1960s and 70s Europe. The French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard popularised it with his 1967 film La Chinoise, in which five pretty students plot revolutionary actions from their Paris flat before taking part in a bungled assassination attempt.

Bestselling author of Wild Swans, Jung Chang, argues that Little Red Book wavers in the West were completely ignorant when it came to the realities of life during the Cultural Revolution. She explains that in China the book was a weapon in a literal sense, used to beat those who were deemed to be “class enemies”.

Meanwhile, in America, the book found an unlikely audience among the Black Panther Party. Elaine Browne, a former Panther who lead the party in the early 70s, explains that the Panthers saw the Little Red Book as a blueprint for enacting the revolution they were hoping to bring about in the United States.

THU 08:00 Bridget Christie: Mortal (m000v7q9)
Life

Following on from her hugely successful, award-winning series – ‘Minds The Gap’ and ‘Utopia’, Bridget Christie turns her attention to Mortality.

Like many of us forced to work from home during Covid lockdown, Bridget recorded this series herself in her house, and in her local park, on a pre-sanitised recording device sent to her in the post. Batteries weren’t included. She had to buy them all herself.

In a collection of informative, personal and absurd recordings, she confronts the difficult questions most of us spend our lives avoiding - all whilst being interrupted by cats, bad WiFi, life admin and her own dead self from beyond the grave.

"Does life have meaning?", "How do you live in the moment?", "Why is life like a washing machine cycle?" and "What's that dog barking at?"

If you are mortal, then this is the show for you.

Written and performed by Bridget Christie.

With guest appearances from her dad, sister Eileen and friend Ash.

Producer: Carl Cooper

Irish police detective Strafford has been assigned to watch over the girls during their stay and so must form an uneasy alliance with their governess Miss Celia Nashe, an undercover MI5 officer charged with the princesses’ safety. However, with a contingent of soldiers patrolling the woods and rumours of IRA terrorists in the vicinity, they soon find their task even more treacherous than expected.

But is the real threat from outside, or from within Clonmillis Hall itself?

Robin Hood

Human rights activist Clive Stafford Smith champions Robin Hood.

Clive Stafford Smith is a lawyer working for human rights both in Britain and abroad - he campaigns for the rights of prisoners on death row in the US and in Guantanamo Bay.

His nomination for a life worth celebrating is at first surprising - it's the entirely fictitious Robin Hood. But, he argues in conversation with medievalist Professor Stephen Knight, the myth has a lot to teach us about the way we treat each other.

THU 10:30 Captured By Pirates (b00rdwm5)
Kate Silverton uncovers the story of the English schoolgirls who were captured by pirates off the China coast, and later ended up in a Japanese concentration camp with Eric Liddell.

In 1935, the SS Tungchow was taken over by a dozen Chinese pirates as it emerged from the Yangtse River. They were expecting a cargo of gold bullion but instead found three lady teachers and seventy British missionaries' children, on their way to Chefoo boarding school on the North China coast.
Six years later, in 1941, these same children became enemy aliens when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. They were imprisoned in the Weihsien Internment Camp, Shantung Province, along with 500 other children, half of them without parents. The morale of the girls and their teachers was greatly improved by two Brownie packs and a Girl Guide Company. Their sports were organised by Eric Liddell, (Chariots of Fire) until he died.

This is an extraordinary tale, and it's told by those who were there:
Margaret Holder, née Vinden.
Beryl Goodland, née Welch.
Kathleen Foster, née Strange.
Mary Previte, née Taylor.
Evelyn Heubener, née Davey.

Syd

Arthur Smith's hit Edinburgh Festival show.

Arthur's father Syd was an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Just 17 when he signed up, he fought at El Alamein, was captured and then imprisoned in Colditz and, after the war, joined the Metropolitan Police. He spent the rest of his working life patrolling the streets of London and had possibly the worst arrest rate in the force - having been a prisoner of war he had no desire to subject anyone else to suffer a loss of liberty.

In this funny and tender evocation of post-war Britain, Arthur brings us Syd's diary entries and conjures up the spirit of his father, a man of great integrity and humour.

Recorded in front of a live, socially distanced audience, with assistance from his brother Nick and music from Kirsty Newton.

Series 28

Streets of London by Ralph McTell

Ralph McTell and others discuss a song that was written for a heroin addict, became an anthem against homelessness, and transcended the folk genre to become an enduring classic.

Ralph McTell says he’s thought constantly about the “blip in my graph” that is Streets of London. People say to him “50 years. One hit. You think you’d have given up by now”. But, Ralph says, that’s not why he writes songs. And, of course, he’s written many. Many that he considers far better than Streets of London. But this remains his best known, best loved, and most played track. It was first recorded 50 years ago, in 1969, for his album Spiral Staircase although it wasn’t released as a single until 1974.

Taking part in Soul Music, alongside Ralph, with their stories and memories connected to Streets of London, are:

Jerry Playle, a music producer. His first ever public performance as a teenage guitarist was of Streets of London. The guitar part went well, but when he opened his mouth to sing, he realised - to his horror - that he couldn't...

Gwen Ever, a DJ. He became homeless in the 1980s. It’s the unlikely punk version of Streets of London by the Anti Nowhere League that reminds him of this time.

Maria Bentley-Dingwall, the daughter of Iris Bentley. Iris was the sister of Derek Bentley who was hanged for a murder he did not commit. Iris spent her life campaigning for his conviction to be quashed. Ralph McTell grew up knowing this story, became a friend of the family, wrote a song about the case, and sang Streets of London at Iris Bentley’s funeral.

Producer: Karen Gregor

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in July 2019.

FRI 10:30 Grand Guignol (b00td9qw)
Sheila McClennon investigates the 19th-century Paris theatre that put blood, gore and horror centre stage.

At the end of the 19th-century, in the seediest quarter of Paris, a new theatre opened its doors offering a recipe of blood and terror - and soon the Grand Guignol was to become as big as an attraction in the city as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe.

The success of an evening's performance - made up of a succession of short comedy and horror plays - was measured by how many members of the audience fainted, as they witnessed gougings, garrottings and gory murders on a nightly basis.

After more than sixty years the theatre finally closed its doors, but only after helping influence the development of horror in the cinema, as well as introducing the phrase Grand Guignol into common parlance as a byword for shocking, blood-soaked terror.

Sheila McClennon visits Paris to revisit the scene of this most shocking of theatre movements, and also comes to London to find out how the likes of Joseph Conrad and Noel Coward got involved in its English incarnation, which fought a staunch but unsuccessful battle with the censors at the beginning of the 1920s.

Producer: Geoff Bird
