SAT 05:30 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m0019r7w)
Series 1

Manchester to Bournemouth

Author, actor and comedy icon, Alexei Sayle continues his travels across the country by rail.

Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers in a quest for conversations that reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people talk about what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also tells stories and memories from his career and childhood.

Alexei has a lifelong "ticket to ride" in his DNA. His father was a railway guard and the Sayle family benefitted from free travel in the UK and across Europe. As a boy, Alexei and his family roamed far and wide from the family home in Anfield, Liverpool. At a time when most people thought an exciting trip by train was to Brighton or Blackpool, Alexei travelled thousands of miles to mysterious towns with unpronounceable names in far flung corners of the continent.

In each programme in the series, Alexei embarks on a rail journey, taking a chance on who he might meet and inviting them to have a conversation with him. In this episode, he travels from Manchester to Bournemouth and meets Moira who, as a dedicated Manchester City fan, has sky blue hair, sky blue clothes and even a sky blue house. He also talks to Jean who has been to visit a lifelong friend who worked alongside her as a psychiatric nurse, Steven and Simon who are both accountants but spend their leisure time travelling the world together to go to top music gigs, and rail enthusiast and veteran record producer Pete Waterman on one of his thousands of trips on the west coast line.

SAT 07:30 Great Lives (m0003zvd)
Series 48

Catherine de Medici nominated by Helen Lewis

Journalist Helen Lewis rehabilitates the reputation of the ‘Black Queen’ of France, Catherine de Medici.

Helen and presenter Matthew Parris are joined by Dr Estelle Paranque, history lecturer at the New College of Humanities and author of a book on the relationship between Catherine and Elizabeth I.

Catherine’s life is a remarkable story of female resilience in the face of adversity. Born and immediately orphaned in Florence, Catherine’s Medici name meant she was married off to the French King’s second son. When she arrived in France, she was shunned. Her new husband was already completely in love with another far older, more beautiful woman and showed little interest in her.

No one expected her to come to the throne. But, following a series of unfortunate deaths, Catherine would go on to become one of the most powerful women in Europe – Queen regent, and mother to three kings across decades of a volatile period in French history.

Helen became fascinated by her aged 10 when she realised with a kind of horror that had she been a medieval princess she was the right age to be shipped off to a strange land to marry some duke she’d never met.

Helen Lewis - associate editor at the New Statesman - argues that Catherine was a savvy political operator, and that her reputation as ‘the serpent of Paris’ was largely due to the fact she was a female in power at a very difficult time. A fascinating insight into a major character little known in the UK.

Miranda Hart

From Mozart to Mama Cass.

Actress and comedian Miranda Hart shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

She wrote and starred in the hit BBC sitcom "Miranda" and has congaed her way to the top of TV comedy by exploiting the universal truth that awkwardness lies at the heart of the human condition. Slapstick and misunderstanding underpin her work along with the impression that she's just a really, jolly, lovely 'girl'.

Making her mark has been something of a slog. After her first appearance at the Edinburgh Fringe it was another 11 years before she could give up her job as a PA. For a good while she was photocopying scripts rather than performing them.

She says: "I started writing comedy because it was more fun inside my head than the real world, but that's no longer true."

SUN 11:00 The Moth Radio Hour (m0019wnb)
Series 13

I Got You

True stories told live in the USA: Jay Allison introduces stories of community, solidarity, and support, sometimes from unexpected sources!

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First heard on PRX in the USA in 2020.

SUN 12:30 Ability (m0004f3w)
Series 2

Weekend Away

Matt and his best mate, Jess, join his parents for a weekend away.

Matt contrives that he and Jess have to share a bed. Surely this will do the trick?

Stars Lee Ridley and Allan Mustafa.

Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad.

Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.

This second series sees Matt still sharing a flat with his best mate, Jess. He is still in love with her but, much as she likes him, she is still not in love with him. She does however, fancy Matt’s rubbish carer, Bob. Well just a tiny bit anyway. Not that she would ever admit it. After all, Bob is even more lazy and useless at most things than she is.

But Bob is willing. And although domestic duties are not really his forte, he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. And over the last year or so the three of them have been through a lot together - well a lot of drinking and hangovers anyway.

The series is set in Newcastle and many of the cast last played together as children in Biker’s Grove.

Matt ...... Lee Ridley – aka Lost Voice Guy
Bob ...... Allan Mustafa
Jess ...... Sammy Dobson
Matt's Inner Voice ...... Andrew Hayden-Smith

Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of Britain’s Got Talent 2018 winner, Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app. Lost Voice Guy is - probably - the first stand up comedian to use a communication aid.

Katherine Jakeways is the co-creator and co-writer of Ability.

A Funny Bones production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in April 2019.

SUN 13:00 Midwinter Break by Bernard MacLaverty (Omnibus) (b092gh2p)
Episode 2

Stella and Gerry's weekend in Amsterdam exposes cracks in their 40-year marriage.

A retired couple, Stella and Gerry Gilmore, fly from their home in Glasgow to Amsterdam for a long weekend: a holiday to refresh the senses, to do some sightseeing, to take stock. Gerry, once an architect, is a heavy drinker who is set in his ways.

Stella is tired of his lifestyle, worried about their marriage and angry at his constant undermining of her religious faith. Their relationship seems safe, easy, familiar but over the course of a few days we discover the deep uncertainties that exist between them.

Bernard MacLaverty's novel is a profound examination of human love, loss and faith.

Omnibus of the last five of 10 parts abridged by Kirsteen Cameron.

Concluded by Frances Tomelty.

SUN 15:30 Sleeve Notes (b00htmzr)
Once a cherished gateway into a musical world - the album sleeve note has been diminished by the digitalisation of music.

It's been reduced to eye-wateringly small print by the CD case and dispensed with entirely by many of those who download their music from the internet.

Music writer Laura Barton explains her love of the sleeve note.

Sleeve notes can be a fierce declaration of intent from the artist, as epitomised by Johnny Cash who in 1968 wrote them for his legendary album, 'Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison' which won a Grammy for Best Album Notes. Some musicians feel that they've said all that they want to say in their music. For them the sleeve note is something to be avoided.

For others, including Jarvis Cocker, it's a chance to have a quiet word with their fans.

In America, sleeve notes - or liner notes as they call them - have their own award category at the Grammys. Dan Morgenstern has won more of these awards than anyone else and shares his experiences.

Poet Simon Armitage long felt the sleeve note is an underused space. He's always wanted more from them. But in 2008, he got a chance to create the kind of sleeve note he'd like to read when Paul Weller commissioned him to write them for his latest album. Armitage explains what it's like to set words to an album. And for musician Adrian John Moffat, the sleeve note can be an intrinsic part of the whole album.

The British music industry, not normally shy of giving awards, is strangely silent when it comes to recognising the work that goes into music CD's textual accompaniment. Laura Barton says the industry should be silent no longer.

The Americans have been celebrating the sleeve note since 1963. In fact it was two Brits who won the first Grammy award in this category - and it's now time that our industry showed that the words really can say something about the music.

SUN 22:30 Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing (b01c7s29)
Series 1

About Nightmare Relatives

This is the story of young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton.

Nathan becomes the first in his family to graduate from University - only to opt for a career in comedy - much to his family's annoyance who want him to get a 'proper job' using his architecture degree.

Each episode is designed to show the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his family as he pursues his career.

The episodes are a mix of Nathan's stand-up intercut with scenes from his family life.

So can Nathan persuade his family to support his career choice?

Mum is probably the most lenient of the disappointed family members. She loves Nathan, but she ain't looking embarrassed for nobody!

Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son joining him to work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window, Martin feels he must get Nathan back into getting a real job.

Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She didn't leave the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that her grandson could 'tell jokes!'

So with all this going on in the household, what will Nathan do? Follow his dreams... or give in?

Simon is a true, true renaissance man. Such talents should always be cherished as their mere existence will inadvertently brighten any situation, or project they are involved with. Not only has he become a Goliath of the theatre but also of the written word. His works on Dickens, and Orson Welles are very highly regarded.

Written, performed and edited by Matt Berry.

Please Leave a Message after the Tone

The voicemail is falling out of favour - and fast. It's increasingly seen as inefficient, impractical, even old-fashioned. Writer and broadcaster Olly Mann charts its rise, fall and strange afterlife.

As our communications move ever more towards email, text, DMs and the rest, the etiquette, culture and unique characteristics of the voicemail and answerphone message are under threat.

As a podcaster, Olly Mann is fascinated by the voicemail. Leaving a voicemail message is not about having a conversation, but it can be an imagined conversation. It can be a performance of sorts. While it may seem a relic of the late 20th Century, some of the biggest news events of this millennium have involved voicemails - including the phone hacking scandal where journalists broke into private messages and brought down the News of the World, and the ‘Sachsgate’ affair which started with an answering machine message. There are also a few surviving voicemails sent by victims of the 9/11 attacks.

Olly explores how voicemails have given life to, and fed the plots of, films and TV programmes and impacted on many genres of music, as well as documentary - and daily life.

As more people ignore that red icon at the bottom corner of the phone screen, are these disembodied monologues worth saving?

Featuring cognitive neuroscientist Professor Sophie Scott, audio producer Davia Nelson, film critic for the Observer Simran Hans, tech journalist for Guardian US Kari Paul, and trumpeter and music producer Keyon Harrold.

A Voicemail Valentine extracts used with thanks to Phono Post Archive and Radio Diaries.

TUE 14:30 The Hang Drum Phenomenon (b061qsdr)
The extraordinary story of a bizarre new percussion instrument, The Hang. Looking like a cross between a wok and a flying saucer, virtuoso percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie explores the story of its global success.

Sometimes referred to as a Hang Drum, the Hang is not really a drum at all, but a tuned metal pan that produces a mellifluous, ethereal tone with echoes of the Trinidadian steel pan or Indian ghatam. Some argue that it is not even a musical instrument, but more a work of art, a sound sculpture.

The Hang (meaning Hand in the Bernese Swiss German dialect) was born in the Swiss city of Berne in the year 2000. Played with the hands and fingers, it has become a cult instrument across the globe and demand far outstrips supply. Prospective owners must go in person - by invitation only - to the PANArt workshop in Berne to get their Hang. Applications must be made by writing a letter, not an email. Second hand Hangs can fetch over $10,000 on eBay. Some Hang videos have over 11 million views from a vast online community of enthusiasts.

What makes the Hang so special? What’s the appeal of making and playing new analogue instruments in this digital age of Pro Tools and plug-ins?

Evelyn looks for the roots of the Hang and meets up with steel pan master Sterling Betancourt MBE. She speaks to Hang virtuosos Manu Delago and Daniel Waples, as well as Kelly Hutchinson of Hang Out UK, a festival dedicated to the Hang and other handpans. She also talks to Kyle Cox and Jim Dusin of Pantheon Steel, makers of the Halo, a handpan inspired by the Hang.

After making around 7000 instruments, PANArt decided to stop production of the Hang in 2013.

Pineapples are believed to have been discovered by Columbus in 1493, and by the 18th century they were so sought-after that many wealthy landowners were attempting to grow them here in Britain. Some were successfully grown as far north as Falkirk in Central Scotland.

Lucinda Lambton discusses pineapple representation in architecture here and abroad, while Ian meets a young pineapple grower and tastes a one cooked to an ancient recipe on a spit over an open fire.

FRI 07:30 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m0019xh0)
Series 1

London to Holyhead

In this episode, he travels from London to Holyhead and meets Alex who is an actor and musician on his way to perform in a musical in Llandudno, Elaine who has been to London to visit her two very eccentric aunts, Jessica, an organisational psychologist whose work involves helping people discover what they really want to do in life, and Stephany who has just celebrated her 20 year service award as a customer service assistant on the railway and tells Alexei of her meeting with two of her most famous customers - Prince William and Kate Middleton.
