* Alexey Leonov’s first ever space walk in 'Two Sides Of The Moon'

* Astronaut Kathryn Thornton on the solitude of space in the documentary 'Alone'

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000qcfj)
Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats - 1/2

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and selects part one of TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

On Christmas Day 1937, nearly two years before book publication, five of TS Eliot's Practical Cats poems were broadcast as readings by Geoffrey Tandy on BBC Radio. The Radio Times wrote:

'For some time past Mr Eliot has been amusing and instructing the offspring of some of his friends in verse on the subject of cats. These poems are not the kind that have been usually associated with his name'.

Now one of our greatest actors, Oscar-winning Jeremy Irons re-visits the original five poems along with the further ten which make up the Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

You’ll hear much-loved familiar characters like Growltiger, Mungojerrie, Rumpleteaser, Old Deutoronomy, Mr Mistoffelees, Macavity Gus and Skimbleshanks. These notorious cats lurk in shadows, baffle Scotland Yard, dance by the light of the moon and who must not be woken. They’re found on trains, in the theatre, in the high street. They juggle, sleep, conjure, are curious and bore - but all show another side of one of our most important British poets.

TS Eliot's poems have been enjoyed by many in Andrew Lloyd Webbers’ musical Cats, but here we return to the poems without any music and celebrate the inventiveness in the original words.

* The Naming of Cats
* Skimbleshanks The Railway Cat
* Growltiger's Last Stand
* The Rum Tum Tugger
* The Song of the Jellicles
* Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer
* Old Deuteronomy
* Of the Awefull Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles
* Mr Mistoffelees
* Macavity: The Mystery Cat

Series 1

Music

Paul Sinha looks through all of human history and examines how we came to be where we are.

In this edition, he takes as his starting point Dolly Parton's standout performance at the 2014 Glastonbury Festival.

How did 120,000 people in a Somerset field, plus many millions more at home, come to be watching a 68-year-old woman from Tennessee on a Sunday afternoon?

The story inevitably takes in a Haitian rebellion, Slovenian hunting, Scottish whisky, Italian electronics and the American son of a Russian farmer who didn't like music. Because nothing and no-one exists in a vacuum.

Presenter Catherine Blyth explores the challenges facing award-winning writers, including Helen Simpson, novelist Ann Patchett, and poet Don Paterson when they try to put something as elusive and subjective as 'happiness' onto the page.

The Many Faces of Ebenezer Scrooge

Christopher Frayling explores how Charles Dickens’s classic A Christmas Carol has endured in popular culture for over 170 years.

Victorian families sat around the fire to read Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, published in 1843, over the festive season. It became an annual ritual. Now we might sit around the TV and watch It's A Wonderful Life - an Americanised version of the story.

In between, there have been countless takes on the book - adapted for public readings, radio, television, film and stage. Cultural historian and writer Christopher Frayling considers how this short novel has shaped Christmas as we know it today, and discusses the circumstances in which it was written.

Hearing from Dickens performers Simon Callow and Miriam Margolyes, as well as historians and fans, Christopher examines how the book’s potent mixture of nostalgia, social concern and celebration has become part of the cultural bloodstream.

He assesses versions starring everyone from Alastair Sim to the Muppets, via Blackadder and the Goons, getting to the very heart of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Dickens wrote of his novel, “may it haunt your house pleasantly”. It has done so - in ways he could not have imagined - for over 170 years.

TUE 14:30 Natalie Haynes' Brave New Algo-World (b03nt9vk)
Comic and critic Natalie Haynes attempts to find the algorithm to determine the perfect joke.

Data structures exercise a tight grip on financial trading, but algorithms are now breaking out into virtually all spheres of human activity - from politics to household cleaning. Both university students and schoolchildren are being encouraged to learn computer programming to stand a chance in the brave new algo-world.

Natalie traces the Western World’s increasing reliance on big data and ponders how its analysis could transform comedy, including a University of Edinburgh research project on unsupervised computer joke generation.

Along her mathematical journey, Natalie charts some of the chaotic muddles that algorithms have led us into, from security scares to retail problems, such as the offensive computer generated T-Shirts available recently on Amazon.

Natalie explores how these complex computer programmes are being used to determine not just stock prices but espionage tactics, film scripts, architecture and online dating. She glimpses the future of algorithms and the effect they may have on the things we buy, the partners we choose and the politicians we elect.

Episode 2

‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.

It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots. As these cold Winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.

Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge. In this episode BBC News Broadcaster and Foreign Correspondent Clive Myrie talks about finding respite in Opera and Poetry, while comedian Bridget Christie talks about the joy of running and her comforting but miss-shaped radishes.

Guests for the series are Grayson Perry, Alan Davies, Sindhu Vee, Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Bridget Christie, Clive Myrie, Professor Brian Cox, Zoe Lyons and presenters and podcasters Rose and Rosie . We look forward to you joining Sandi in her cabin (please bring biscuits).

WED 11:00 Neil Innes: Dip My Brain In Joy (m000q8vr)
3. Ouch!

Diane Morgan celebrates the life and work of Neil Innes, the music and comedy legend of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band & The Rutles. A towering talent, occasionally known as the 7th Python & regularly found with a duck on his head. His legacy of music and comedy is rich, inspiring and inspired.

Neil said of his work, “Shakespeare wrote comedies as well as dramas. I’m just like Shakespeare, except with better songs.” His influence permeates modern comedy and his back catalogue is diverse and prolific. Neil wrote and performed anarchic rock with The Bonzos, he penned and performed pitch-perfect pastiches of the Beatles for The Rutles, he appeared in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Monty Python’s Life of Brian and he is one of only two non-Pythons with a writing credit on Monty Python’s Flying Circus – the other being Douglas Adams. He released over 20 albums including How Sweet To Be An Idiot, Innes Book of Records, and Recycled Vinyl Blues. And on top of being comedically and musically gifted, he was also a really nice man. A beautiful, kind, gentle soul. Considered, absurd, and delightful.

We’re going to celebrate his life, work and absurdist tendencies in this three hour collage of scraps and archive. There are old interviews, performances and programmes, conversations with family, friends and fans including his wife of over fifty years Yvonne, bandmates Phil Jackson, Ken Thornton, John Halsey (better known to Rutles fans as Barry Wom), producer Ian Keill, and engineer Steve James, musical arranger for the Rutles John Altman and Pythons Terry Gilliam and Michael Palin. In Part Three, Ouch!, we take a look at Neil's work with the Monty Python team on television, film and record, his work with Eric Idle on Rutland Weekend Television and The Rutles, and how the fictional outfit with a "legend that would last a lifetime" became a living, breathing, and touring band with adoring fans.

Neil died on Sunday 29th December 2019. He was 75. At the time of his death, he was working on a new album, and a project called Radio Noir, part-audio memoir, part-experimental work of art, part- exploration of the human brain and you will hear some extracts and some unreleased songs throughout the programme – that have never been broadcast.

Simon McGrath is a generally nice chap who just happens to be an arms dealer. It's not something he planned, he just fell into it, and despite all his best intentions he just doesn't seem to be able to leave because he has to pay his mortgage like everyone else. Of course his real love is electronic music and this is just a stop gap until he finds the perfect outlet for his music - okay so the gap has lasted five years but that's not the point. Once he can get himself motivated he'll be out of there and, as his ever supportive mum says, people will always want to kill each other. So that's alright then......

This week Simon is appalled that his boss thinks it's inappropriate for him to empathise with the world's persecuted and oppressed and stop worrying, but when his family generally agree that worrying gets you nowhere he sets out to give himself compassion fatigue so that he can he can stop worrying and not feel guilty about all the bloodshed in the world. Unfortunately his new outlook doesn't seem to change Anna's parents view of him when they come to visit.

One-Seventeen AM

Part 2: One-Seventeen AM.

"Good day, bad day, who can tell..."

Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall returns with more hilarious, gripping and moving stories.

This second volume of Sarah Kendall's Australian Trilogy, is one show in three parts. A collection of seemingly unconnected stories and memories, which, together, form a meditation on luck, survival and hindsight.

Scrolling backwards and forwards in time to different moments in her life, over the three parts Sarah creates an intricate montage, demonstrating the interconnectedness of life.

In this second part, Sarah is trying to be more positive. She tells us of a trip to the vets with the family's pet hamster, of a car accident she was in as a child, and of a day at a clinic with her son. And we find out that hamsters originate from Syria.

Burger, Burger, Burger, Burger, Burger

The hit series returns for a seventh series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave. Written by and starring Donald Mcleary and Sanjeev Kohli.

Set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, the award winning Fags, Mags & Bags sees a return of all the shop regular characters, and some guest appearances along the way, from the likes of Sean Biggerstaff, Mina Anwar, Greg McHugh and Simon Greenall.

In this opening episode, we pick up on Dave's relationship with his best friend Lesley (Simon Greenall). Does Dave see a future in the friendship, and what does Lenzie think of his blossoming bromance?

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!

FRI 23:30 Andrew Maxwell's Public Enemies (b03dv5n2)
The Internet

Andrew tackles the internet. Whether it's online pornography twisting our children's minds or GCHQ reading our emails, it seems only right to have a healthy distrust of the internet.

But surely, to paraphrase a former Prime Minister, there's no such thing as the Internet - there are men, and women, and lolcats. What is it about the internet that makes people on it so scary?

Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups. In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.

This series will showcase a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.

Written and performed by Andrew Maxwell.

Script edited by Paul Byrne.
Producer: Ed Morrish
