SAT 05:30 Love in Recovery (m00020z1)
Series 3

Cupboard

Third series of the award-nominated comedy drama set in Alcoholics Anonymous. Written by Pete Jackson and inspired by his own road to recovery. Stars Rebecca Front, John Hannah, Sue Johnston, Paul Kaye and Johnny Vegas.

Love in Recovery follows the lives of five very different recovering alcoholics. Johnny Vegas is Andy, the sweet but simple self-appointed group leader. Sue Johnston plays straight talking Julie, who's been known to have the odd relapse here and there - and everywhere. Rebecca Front is the snobby and spiky Fiona, an ex-banker who had it all and then lost the lot. John Hannah is Simon, a snide journalist who’s not an alcoholic – he got caught drink driving, his boss made him attend the meeting, but he fell in love with Fiona and stayed. And, despite her best efforts, she fell in love with him too. Paul Kaye is Danno, a down and out two-bit chancer with a shady past but a lot of heart, who’s desperate to turn his life around.

As we follow their weekly meetings, we hear them moan, argue, laugh, fall apart, fall in love and, most importantly, tell their stories.

In episode three, Andy is convinced that everyone’s forgotten his birthday - just like every other year. What he doesn't know is that Simon and Danno are hiding in the cupboard with a cake. But finding an appropriate time to burst out cheering proves difficult when Julie comes in with a dark secret she wants to reveal.

Writer Pete Jackson is a recovering alcoholic and has spent time in Alcoholics Anonymous. It was there he found, as most people do, support from the unlikeliest group of disparate souls, all banded together due to one common bond. As well as offering the support he needed throughout a difficult time, AA also offered a weekly, sometimes daily, dose of hilarity, upset, heartbreak and friendship.

Love in Recovery doesn’t seek to represent an AA meeting exactly as it might happen in real life, but to capture the funny stories, the sad stories, the stories of small victories and of huge milestones, stories of loss, stories of hope, and most importantly, the many highs and lows in the journey of recovery.

SAT 09:00 Andrew Maxwell's Hallowe'en Hoolie (b04mlpx7)
The Irish comedian Andrew Maxwell loves Hallowe'en. That's why he's determined to reclaim it from the Americans. Forget pumpkins, fake fangs and plastic paraphernalia, the origins of Hallowe'en lie in the Celtic feast of Samhain.
Andrew hears from Professor Ronald Hutton about the ancient roots of this celebration which marked the threshold between summer and winter. He quizzes the folklorists Steve Roud and Doc Rowe about the British customs that have grown into trick or treating and fancy dress. One of America's leading historians of Hallowe'en, Lesley Bannatyne, traces the transformation of traditions as they crossed the Atlantic from Ireland to the New World, and describes how 21st Century Americans have taken Hallowe'en 'haunting' to a whole new level. The storyteller Clare Murphy frightens the wits out of Andrew with her eerie account of a faerie changeling, and the psychologist Claudia Hammond explains the science behind why so many of us love scary stories. Along the way Andrew tucks into curiously hard 'soul cakes', seeks to predict his guests' fortunes with charms hidden inside barmbrack, and indulges in a spot of spectre-hunting in a London pub said to be haunted by Dick Turpin.
Prepare to be spooked by otherworldly radio archives, including The League of Gentlemen's Ghost Chase.

Jane Horrocks

From Bjork to Gracie Fields Jane Horrocks shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young. From 2006.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the actress Jane Horrocks. She specialises in unconventional, complex roles - from the eccentric secretary Bubble in the cult sit-com Absolutely Fabulous to a bulimic teenager in Mike Leigh's film Life is Sweet. But the role that brought her the greatest public recognition and critical acclaim was Little Voice. Written especially for her, it told the story of a cripplingly shy girl who only finds liberation and expression when she takes on the voices of musical legends. Jane Horrocks's ability to sing like Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland and Marilyn Monroe, among others, was so convincing that the film's credits had to make it clear she had sung every note and not been dubbed by the originals.

Produced by Leanne Buckle.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2006.

SUN 10:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b011vjj0)
Series 2

Waterton

Squire Waterton of Walton Hall was an eccentric Englishman and gentleman who made many visits to South America and wrote about his travels.

His travel books are "amongst the oddest I know" David Attenborough tells us, written in an odd, almost biblical style. But nevertheless, these books are accounts of natural history two hundred years ago. Attenborough argues that Waterton shouldn't be just remembered for his writing. He should be credited with establishing the first nature reserve in this country.

Appalled by the ravages of the industrial revolution's impact on the landscape, he built a wall around his estate to protect the wildlife - and free of charge allowed people to visit, which they did in their masses.

Written and presented by David Attenborough
Producer: Julian Hector.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2011.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000p0dr)
Lines of Resistance

Poet Daljit Nagra delves into the BBC's poetry archives and selects Lines of Resistance.

Writer and poet Bridget Minamore explores how women – particularly women of colour – have pushed back against the poetry establishment to create their own literary narratives.

Poetry as an escape from oppression and as a way to amplify the voices of the overlooked is nothing new. But, so often, resistance writers are male.

How have women in general and women of colour resisted dominant narratives in poetry? And how have they challenged those established voices of dissent to create their own literary spaces for resistance?

The themes explored in the programme range from 21st-century Peckham to ancient Iraq and the slave plantations of the Caribbean, as Bridget goes on a journey to uncover the lines of resistance followed by women throughout history. She talks both to established writers and teenage poets struggling to make their mark.

At the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton, south London, poet Malika Booker tells Bridget, "Story is in our DNA”. The women of the Octavia poetry collective explain how the internet both helps and hinders the process of creative resistance. With the help of Arabic literature specialist Dr Marlé Hammond and British-Egyptian writer Sabrina Mahfouz, Bridget draws links from Muslim women writing in 11th-century Spain to how Muslim women write in Britain today.

And in a surprising exchange with history professor Eleanor Robson, Bridget discovers that a writer of poetry from 4,000 years ago, long cherished by contemporary feminists, isn’t all that she seems to be.

With poems by Sarah Lasoye, Warsan Shire, Malika Booker, Enheduana, Wallada bint al-Mustakfi, Seema Begum and Bridget Minamore herself.

Produced by Matthew Teller
An Overtone production for BBC Radio 4

First broadcast in 2017.

Peter Curran

This week’s guest is a writer, broadcaster, failed drummer and former carpenter, who loves to make radio shows.

Peter’s first break in broadcasting was at GLR in the early 90s, answering the phones and making tea for Tommy Vance. He taught himself to edit on reel-to-reel tape, before landing his own daily show, and then leaving the BBC to make documentaries and audiobooks.

Since those early days, Peter calculates that he’s interviewed 10,000 people - across local, national and international radio. Latterly some of these interviews have been conducted in the unconventional setting of a bunk bed, thanks to his critically-acclaimed show with Patrick Marber.

The format and furniture lends itself brilliantly to the kind of storytelling that emerges late at night, when you can relax and allow your mind to wander. We listen to an episode from the second series, which covers Voltaire, Spike Milligan, Antony Burgess and more. It is produced by Peter's own company Foghorn Productions.

Peter remembers encounters with the famous, including the last interview with Sir Kingsley Amis, and Cate Blanchett's low-key appearance on the pull-out mattress for Bunk Bed.

He also reflects upon the more personal storytelling in the live show Some Kind Of Man, which was recorded for Radio 4 by Giddy Goat Productions in 2017; and Collecting The Troubles At The Ulster Museum, Peter's 2018 documentary which looks at the creative response to conflict in his hometown of Belfast.

Produced by Ali Gardiner Radio 4 Extra.

Justin's still living with his father-in-law, still working with his ex-wife and still calling on his Gran for her words of wisdom. This week he also has to cope with a game of golf.

In one version of his life, Justin is a loveable celebrity who is successful, funny, and stopped in the street by adoring fans. He's the man who has everything.

In the more realistic version he's a DJ in a slightly shabby local radio station who gets hassled by the occasional oddball on the street. And he's the man who hopes for everything.

And at home? Well, it's chaotic. His wife has left him, taking custody of his 8-year-old son Justin jnr. So he's back on the market. So he's currently living in his father-in-law's spare room in Bury. The only person who understands him is his Gran, living in luxury in an old folk's home in Warrington. Oh, and his producer Bryn but this might not be such a good thing.

Everyone Quite Likes Justin is written by Justin Moorhouse and Jim Poyser. Justin is a comedian who sells out gigs across the country. He has also written plays, a previous show for Radio 4 and the first series of Everyone Quite Likes Justin. Jim Poyser is a writer and producer of enormous experience in both radio and television.

Recorded in front of an audience in Manchester.

WED 07:30 Ability (m0004f3w)
Series 2

Weekend Away

Matt is 25. He has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app on his iPad. Everyone who cares about Matt knows that this isn't the defining thing about him. He is funny and clever and "up for stuff" - partly because he is keen to show that there's nothing he can't do, but also because, if he's honest, he's aware that he's less likely than other people to get the blame.

In this second series of the award nominated comedy, Matt is still sharing a flat with his best mate, Jess. He is still in love with her but, much as she likes him, she is still not in love with him. She does however, fancy Matt’s rubbish carer, Bob (Allan Mustafa). Well just a tiny bit anyway. Not that she would ever admit it. After all, Bob is even more lazy and useless at most things than she is.

But Bob is willing. And although domestic duties are not really his forte, he likes Matt and treats him like a real person. And over the last year or so the three of them have been through a lot together - well a lot of drinking and hangovers anyway.

Ability is the semi-autobiographical co-creation of the 2018 Britain’s Got Talent winner, Lee Ridley, otherwise known as Lost Voice Guy. Like his sitcom creation, Lee has cerebral palsy and can only speak via an app. He is - probably - the first stand up comedian to use a communication aid. Prior to BGT, Lee won the BBC New Comedy Award in 2014, has written and performed four full Edinburgh shows and has just completed a major sell out tour of the UK.

Katherine Jakeways, the co-creator and co-writer of Ability, is a multi-award nominated writer. She has written North by Northamptonshire, Guilt Trip and All Those Women for BBC Radio 4 as well as numerous radio plays. She has also written for Crackanory and The Tracey Ullman Show for TV.

The series is set in Newcastle and many of the cast last played together as children in Biker’s Grove.

Matt............Lee Ridley – aka Lost Voice Guy
Bob..............Allan Mustafa
Jess..............Sammy Dobson
Matt's Inner Voice.............Andrew Hayden-Smith

Episode 3

Nicholas Urfe, a young British graduate runs away from his monotonous life to take up a teaching post on the small Greek island of Phraxos. There he meets the enigmatic figure of Maurice Conchis and slowly gets drawn into a world full of strange encounters and elaborate tricks on Conchis’s estate at Bourani. When Conchis introduces Nicholas to the enchanting and mysterious Lily Montgomery who bears a striking resemblance to Conchis’s long dead fiancée, reality and illusion begin to intertwine, but what strange game is Conchis playing with Nicholas? Moreover, in this world coloured by artifice and deception, who is really telling him the truth?
First published in 1965 John Fowles’s novel ‘The Magus’ soon achieved cult status, but has only been dramatized once before in a film of 1968. Now acclaimed dramatist and screenwriter Adrian Hodges (My Week with Marilyn, The Go-Between, Peter and Wendy, The Musketeers, Survivors, Primeval,) has adapted the novel for this new three-part dramatisation starring Tom Burke (War and Peace, The Musketeers) as Nicholas Urfe, Charles Dance (And Then There Were None, Game of Thrones) as Maurice Conchis, and Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Brideshead Revisted) as Lily.

WED 11:00 Unsung Heroines (m000p159)
3. Elsie Widdowson, Marjorie Hurst, Noor Inayat Khan, Josephine Butler, Nancy Wake, The Lumberjills, Rani of Jhansi

History is full of incredible women who did amazing things. And yet, even though their legacy is still felt today, their names aren't on the tip our tongues. We've all heard of Florence Nightingale and Amelia Earhart - but what about Annie Russell Maunder, Jayaben Desai or Josephine Butler? They're much less well known, yet they all made significant and enduring contributions to our world.
The writer and comedian Viv Groskop has been trawling the BBC radio archives to find out about a kickass sisterhood that refused to stay at home when that's what was expected of them.
We meet the pioneering physician, Sophia Jex Blake; the Nobel laureate environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, the social reformer, Caroline Norton; the champion cyclist, Beryl Burton; we take a trip to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home to learn about its founder, Mary Tealby. And many more.
Viv also invites contemporary women to nominate their favourite unsung heroines - so we hear from Clare Balding, Cathy Newman, Samira Ahmed, Natalie Haynes, Gemma Cairney, Angela Barnes and Jessica Fostekew about the females they call phenomenal.
From ancient Rome to the 21st Century, Viv Groskop brings inspiring women out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Producer - Moy McGowan

FRI 07:00 Jack & Millie (b0bch6d1)
Series 1

Deliver Us From eBay

Jack and Millie discover the Eleventh Commandment - Thou shalt not try and please a son's scary ex-girlfriend. And what's really in the mysterious neighbour's packages?

A chance encounter and a classy fish restaurant combine to create a tale of Middle Eastern diplomacy, tight shorts, strictly no ospreys and a married lifetime's-worth of verbal sparring.

So Millie's son Melvin has given her a new tablet with a voice recorder?

So suddenly Jack and Millie have decided to record everything that happens to them? And for this, we should be grateful?

Well Yes! Because this is a new comedy show written by Jeremy Front (writer of the Charles Paris mysteries for Radio 4) and starring Jeremy Front and Rebecca Front as Jack and Millie Lemman, an older couple who are fully engaged with contemporary life while being at war with the absurdities of the modern world.

Written by Jeremy Front
Produced by David Tyler

A Pozzitive production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in August 2018.

FRI 07:30 Love in Recovery (m000256q)
Series 3

Ivy

In episode four, Oscar has dropped in to the meeting on the way to see his son. Oscar’s recently lost his wife and wants to share her story. But Oscar’s tale is far from what any of the group expected.
