SAT 09:00 Last Post for the Men of Letters (b097lpnp)
Russell Davies unearths from the radio and TV archives the voices of men and women who were, for many years, a staple of the broadcasting diet.

Some, but by no means all, have university pedigree but all have a breath-taking breadth of learning and the facility to deliver it, albeit to an audience who were prepared to give them time and were, it would appear, happy to be dazzled by learning.

Russell's examples from the Men and Women of letters trove is gathered round his very personal association with John Gross, of whom he writes:

'In 1969 an author in his early thirties published his first book. The Rise and Fall of the Man of Letters won the Duff Cooper prize, delighted the reading public, introduced them to the name of John Gross, and marked the beginning of what would be an illustrious and fascinating literary career. It ended with his death on 10 January 2011, a great sorrow for the many people who loved and admired John.

No doubt I read at the time, but had forgotten until coming across it again, since I quite lack his total recall, something he wrote here in 1983, an entertaining review of a biography of Sir George Lewis, the famous and immensely influential Victorian solicitor whose clients included the Prince of Wales. In an aside, Gross gently wondered why the biographer hadn't mentioned that Lewis 'appears by name in Conan Doyle's "The Illustrious Client" — a pretty broad clue to the client's identity'. Yes, he had read everything, high and low.

Since his death, I've thought often about John, and reread him. The breadth of his reading and his memory made him the perfect anthologist, and he edited half a dozen Oxford Books of ..., from Aphorisms to Parodies. He also wrote three books of his own, and I wish he had written more. Shylock is a learned and highly original study of that singularly problematic character and his play, while A Double Thread is a beautiful short memoir of Gross's London childhood, 'double' because both English and Jewish. But I now see that the defining point came with his brilliant first book.

Although he and Kingsley Amis were disparate personalities, to say the least, Gross would have shared Amis's contempt for anything which 'makes a statement', and his disdain for the idea of 'importance'. But I believe that The Rise and Fall is a truly important book. It wasn't just an item on Gross's list of publications, it was part of his own story, and it made a statement of its own: a repudiation of the attempted monopoly of literary criticism by 'the university' and the larger academic appropriation of our common culture.

The Mysteries of Udolpho

Emily St Aubert is forced to leave France and go and live with her Aunt and her new husband, Count Montoni, in his isolated castle in Italy.

Before long Emily discovers that the castle is a place of nightmares and Montoni a desperate man who will stop at nothing to terrorise both his wife and his niece.

Ann Radcliffe's Gothic romance revelled in both terrorising and titillating its readers. This was the sensational novel of its era, filled with dark deeds, dastardly villains and supposedly supernatural events.

As with many other Gothic novels, The Mysteries of Udolpho has at its centre a powerless young heroine often trapped in a mysterious location and pitted against an evil villain; the book revels in exploring the politics of power, pleasure and pain and sexual desire. Ann Radcliffe felt that terror was superior to horror, which nullified the senses, whereas she preferred to write about the psychological experience of being full of fear and dread manifested through the art of suggestion. Radcliffe was also unusual in always giving a rational explanation for the strange goings on in her novels.

Hattie Naylor's dramatisation takes the core of the four volumes of the novel to explore those edicts most at the heart of the Gothic Novel.

His own infatuation began as a young boy at boarding school and along with his talent and determination it took him all the way to the top of the sport. He played for Leicestershire and England. His transition from the crease to the commentary box was cemented by one of the most memorable moments in broadcasting history - the notorious "legover" comment that prompted the legendary Brian Johnson to dissolve into helpless, prolonged giggles live on air.

Jim and Robin - Setting Sail

Fi Glover with friends who are united by their love of the sea and encourage unity through traditional seafaring: "If we don't all pull together in one direction we'll go nowhere" - another conversation in the series that proves it's surprising what you hear when you listen.

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. He played host to Suzanne Vega, Jeff Buckley and many others; he discovered and nurtured lots of talent including Beck, Regina Spektor and the Moldy Peaches but nobody discovered him.

TUE 11:00 Telling Tales (m000cctn)
Natalie Haynes

The writer and broadcaster Natalie Haynes combines a love of classical history and myth, with a background in teaching and stand-up.

In her first novel, The Amber Fury, a grief-stricken teacher turns to Greek tragedies and finds that the tales of fate, family and vengeance speak directly to her pupils. The Children of Jocasta followed, a re-imagining of the Oedipus myth; while Natalie’s most recent book, A Thousand Ships, re-tells the story of the Trojan War from the perspective of women (both mortal and immortal).

In this book Natalie highlights “the pain of the women who have always been relegated to the edges of the story, victims of men, survivors of men, slaves of men.” Natalie draws on two of the world’s oldest poems, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, imagining Penelope’s fidelity to her questing husband, stretched to its very limits, in a series of letters.

We re-visit a previous incarnation of Odysseus’ wife, in The Two Penelopes, a story commissioned by Writing West Midlands, which first broadcast on Radio 4 in 2014. In this short tale, Natalie sneaks in references to Homer’s epic poem, while imagining a latter day Penelope, knitting to while away the hours in a Birmingham care home.

Natalie also talks about standing up for the classics in her titular Radio 4 series. In the upcoming fifth series, she will turn once again to the foundational poems of Homer, with an impressively concise re-telling of The Iliad. All 24 books, recorded live at the BBC Radio Theatre, in 24 minutes.

Series 1

Episode 3

Super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love - and, with the help of an audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.

Remembering her larger-than-life father - a gregarious character, sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his 'carpe diem' approach to life, and his favourite motto, You Can't Take It With You.

When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey.

In this series, Angela does the very same thing and asks her loved ones to nominate objects that they would choose to send on with her as mementoes of their time together, which she keeps in a suitcase full of memories, acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.

Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at aged 33 she decided to pursue a long held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show and writing credits on her beloved The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Kane's Whistle Stop Tour (BBC Radio 2), Mock The Week (BBC 2) and Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3).

WED 09:00 Dilemma (b01r0h4y)
Series 2

Episode 3

In Dilemma, Sue Perkins puts four panellists through the moral and ethical wringer by posing a series of finely-balanced dilemmas and then cross-examining them on their answers. So, in the first series, Dominic Lawson was asked if he would provide an alibi for someone he hated; Fi Glover was offered £25,000 to give a talk to a company that once screwed over her husband; John Finnemore was asked if he'd grass up a sweet old lady who was shoplifting. (Yes, Yes, No, were the answers if you're interested.)

As well as these hypothetical questions, the show also features a variety of rounds which may include: Audience Dilemmas, where the panel 'solve' any problems the audience may be having; What Did I Do?, where each panellist relates a dilemma they were faced with in their own lives and the others have to guess how they resolved it; Why I Was Right, where each panellist is given an indefensible action that they must morally justify in 30 seconds; Choose Your Own Adventure, where the panellists get a series of dilemmas, each one following on from the last as they burrow their way deeper into a moral quagmire; and Quickfire, where shades of grey are dismissed in favour of a fingers-on-the-buzzers binary choice - "Would you rather eat a kitten or fight a swan?".

This week's show sees comedian Dave Gorman cheating higher, faster and stronger; journalist Anita Anand deal with an unexpected guest; creator of Bleak Expectations Mark Evans getting a hand in the bush (but no birds); and comedian Jenny Eclair embrace dating in the digital age.

The show was devised by the award-winning comedian Danielle Ward, and is presented by Sue Perkins.

Producer: Ed Morrish.

Role Models

What can we learn from the humanity of others? From seeing ourselves reflected in someone else? Josie Long presents stories of role models.

"You know, vampires have no reflections in a mirror? There's this idea that monsters don't have reflections in a mirror. And what I've always thought isn't that monsters don't have reflections in a mirror. It's that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves... Part of what inspired me, was this deep desire that before I died, I would make a couple of mirrors. That I would make some mirrors so that kids like me might see themselves reflected back and might not feel so monstrous for it." - Junot Diaz

Series 3

Episode 2

by Katherine Jakeways

Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small market town in Northamptonshire. This week, against her better judgement, Jan has dinner with her ex-husband, and Mary and Jonathan have crossed wires.

Producer: Steven Canny

As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously. Now Katherine Jakeways is giving Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

Joined by nearly all of the incredible cast which graced Series One and Two - including Sheila Hancock as the Narrator, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Montagu, Geoffrey Palmer and Kevin Eldon - and with the exciting addition of Tim Key and Nathaniel Parker - North by Northamptonshire hopes (and promises) to once again delight and entertain audiences and critics alike.

FRI 22:30 Tom Parry's Fancy Dressed Life (b08mqtgg)
Series 1

Max

Episode 2: Max. It's the annual Parry family party and, as if you needed reminding, it's Fancy Dress. Tom is rather pleased with his typically obscure nay gloriously inaccessible choice of costume but some unhelpfully nightmarish flashbacks to his university days threaten to spoil his enjoyment of the day.

Tom Parry is an award winning comedian, writer and actor whose credits include Miranda, Phone Shop and Drunk History among many others. As a stand up, he most recently gained critical acclaim and an Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer nomination for his debut hour 'Yellow T-Shirt'. For more than a decade he has been part of the multi-award winning sketch team Pappy's. Together they have performed 6 sell out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, completed 4 national tours, gigged all over the world, and created, written and starred in the sitcom 'Badults' for BBC3.

Cast: Tom Parry, Ben Clarke, Celeste Dring, Gareth Pierce
Producer: Richard Morris
A BBC Studios Production.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2017.

FRI 22:45 Charlotte and Lillian (b095t75x)
Series 1

The Photo

In the throes of splitting up from her boyfriend, 29-year-old Charlotte (Helen Monks) is determined to prove she's not as self-centred as he says she is. She signs up as a volunteer to visit the elderly, expecting to be paired with a frail and needy old lady who's full of gratitude and appreciation for such a selfless act. Instead she meets 82-year-old Lillian (Miriam Margolyes), a belligerent and feisty old bat who sees through her in an instant.

Needless to say, they don't get on.

But Charlotte and Lillian's conflicting outlooks on life belie a striking similarity in their personalities. Both are profoundly selfish, self-involved and stubborn. Both are quietly curious about each other - though they'd never dream of admitting it. And both are lonely.

For Charlotte, spending time with Lillian brings certain benefits, and she's keen to maximise them for her 'personal brand'. She starts capturing moments of their time together with her phone's camera - something Lillian quickly takes exception to. She wants full editorial control, along with the final say over any photos. A battle of wills and vanities ensues, but not before each of them has picked up some unforeseen advice from across the generational divide.

This four-part, two-actress comedy, written by Holly Walsh and Kat Sommers, was recorded on location and features the fantastic combination of Miriam Margolyes and Helen Monks, working together for the first time.

A Giddy Goat production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in September 2017.

FRI 23:30 Simon Evans Goes to Market (b0435p0k)
Series 1

Land

How do you make economics funny? How do you put the comedy in commodity? Simon Evans has the answer in this new series which asks us to get involved in investment.

Rather than being cowed by an apparently complicated and overwhelming system, Simon jumps right in. He takes as his focus four commodities which are so intrinsic to our lives they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil and grain. Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.

All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts. Each week he will be joined by Tim Harford, Merryn Somerset Webb and a guest specialist as they examine the chequered social and economic histories of these commodities. By looking at four such fundamental products, Simon brings us to a closer understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.

In this first episode, Simon looks at Land. How did it come to be traded, why we think bricks and mortar are a safe investment and who really owns the land we buy.
Performed by ..... Simon Evans, with regular guests Tim Harford and Merryn Somerset-Webb, and Land expert Kevin Cahill
Written by ..... Simon Evans with Benjamin Partridge, Guy Venables, Andy Wolton
Producer ..... Tilusha Ghelani.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2014.
