SAT 09:00 Not The World Cup in Brazil (b0499kgw)
The media is full of stories about Premiership footballers, the highest earners who command attention on and off the field.

But for most players and fans, football isn't about glamour. It's the stuff of everyday life.

Like the supporter who has seen his team play every match, home and away for 40 years and the 75 year old who loves the game so much he still ventures out in all weathers three times a week just to score a goal. These people are the beating heart and soul of football, the men and women who are often forgotten as the media keeps its focus on the top players and clubs.

The 6 Music DJ Steve Lamacq co-presents the programme. As a lifelong Colchester United supporter he knows only too well the hardships football can bring, a cycle that regularly breaks the hearts of its loyal band of fans. Inexpert analysis comes from the comedian and football sceptic Robin Ince. Can Steve persuade Robin that football should become part of his life?

The programme features the best from the BBC archives, including John Motson. He takes a wry look at Ample Arthur Cartwright, a player whose career was blighted by a love of palaeontology while The Likely Lads Bob and Terry spend a desperate day trying to avoid hearing the result of a game until the highlights are shown on TV later in the evening.

We follow the fortunes of a parks team, hear from the woman who regularly turned out for all male sides and travel to Robben Island in South Africa to meet the men who used football as a way of fighting apartheid.

Not The World Cup In Brazil, which was made in 2014, is a millionaire player and club owner free zone and hears from the ordinary people who believe football is a sport not a balance sheet.

Series 1

Top Shelf

Alice and Snoo have to resort to some rather unconventional means to get people into the library. A very low shelf, a book about zombies, a hosepipe ban and some hummingbirds bring the public flocking in.

Meet Alice, a former child prodigy who won a place at Oxford aged 9 but, because Daddy went too, she never needed to have any friends. She's scared of everything - everything that is, except libraries and Snoo, a slightly confused individual, with a have-a-go attitude to life, marriage, haircuts and reality. Snoo loves books, and fully intends to read one one day.

And forever popping into the library is Dr Cadogan, celebrity doctor to the stars and a man with his finger in every pie. Charming, indiscreet and quite possibly wanted by Interpol, if you want a discrete nip and tuck and then photos of it accidentally left on the photocopier, Dr Cadogan is your man.

Their happy life is interrupted by the arrival of Simon Nielson, a man with a mission to close down inefficient libraries. Fortunately, he hates his mission. What he really wants to do is once, just once, get even with his inexhaustible supply of high-achieving brothers.

It might be surprising to hear, but Sir David Attenborough has made it known over the years that rats are not his favourite animal.

If that wasn't enough, whilst making Life of Mammals, he devoted a whole programme to them - and to balance his own personal view went to an Indian temple where the rat is revered and even encouraged to swarm in vast numbers.

But in a clever twist of the story, as is the hallmark of David Attenborough, in no uncertain way he tells us why they should be respected.

SUN 13:00 You're Entering Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone (m0008yx7)
October 1959, America was deep into the 'age of unease' as TV viewers took their first steps into 'another dimension, not only of sight & sound but of mind'. Their next stop, The Twilight Zone.

Through these doors of perception they have forever dwelled in stories of pixelated shadow and substance. A black & white realm presided over by a neat little man in a sharp suit whose perpetual cigarette smoke forever curls upwards as he ushers you into his realm.

The aliens are among us and due on Maple Street but maybe we are the monsters? Are we on earth and is it dying? Where is everybody? Why are they vanishing and is that death hitching a ride or knocking at my door looking uncannily like Robert Redford. And why is Captain Kirk screaming at that thing on the wing that no one else can see?!

Rod Serling, America's most famous TV playwright, astonished people with his announcement that he was to explore the realms of sci-fi and fantasy in a new anthology show. Like Dennis Potter starting up Dr Who. But Serling, an impeccable liberal haunted by war, racial strife and the possibilities of nuclear Armageddon smuggled stories of conscience, doubt and possibility into 5 seasons of a remarkable show that has never died and has been revisited for a fourth time with Jordan Peele as host. In truth, nothing can match a realm of the American weird that Serling made uniquely his own.

Alan Dein hears from Serling's family, veteran directors Richard Donner and John Frankenheimer, actors Earl Holliman (star of the first ever episode) and Jean Marsh as well as the writers Jonathan Lethem and David Thomson and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker.

Two Twilight Zone radio episodes accompany this three hour documentary.

Time to Celebrate

When Tom phones home we find out why he hates celebrations, why his mum can't stop organising them and why his father needs an electric whisk.

Classic Wrigglesworth rants combined with a fascinating and hilarious glimpse into his family background and the influences that have shaped his temperament, opinions and hang-ups.

Tom Wrigglesworth's Hang Ups is a 30 minute phone call from Tom ringing his parents for his weekly check-in. As the conversation unfolds, Tom takes time out from the phone call to explain the situation, his parent's reactions and relate various anecdotes from the past which illustrate his family's views. And sometimes he just needs to sound-off about the maddening world around him and bemoan everyday annoyances.

During all this Hang Ups explores class, living away from 'home', trans-generational phenomena, what we inherit from our families and how the past repeats in the present. All in a 30 minute phone call.

'Tom Wrigglesworth's Hang-ups' gets underneath the skin of Tom and the Wrigglesworth family, so sit back and enjoy a bit of totally legal phone hacking.

Though the resulting legal drama didn’t get commissioned, it brought Amelia to the attention of the team behind This Life. She wrote several scripts for the second series, becoming part of a team that won the Writers Guild Award for best TV drama in 1997.

Amelia’s move into crime began with another pilot for ITV: a drama about a fast-tracked female DCI in London, who is compromised by a personal secret. This pilot became a radio drama, set in Manchester and starring Maxine Peake, which eventually ran for five series on BBC Radio 4.

We hear a 45 minute drama from 2012, titled Craven: Looking For Mr King, in which Sue - the titular DCI -investigates a made-for-tabloid murder, involving a rich man, a sports car, and a well-known beauty spot.

Amelia talks about how acting informs her writing, and what she learned from working with the ground-breaking comedian Chris Morris, and later with Sally Wainwright on Scott & Bailey.

We also hear about Amelia’s latest writing project, Traces, a crime thriller based in the world of forensics and based on an original idea by the best-selling Scottish author Val McDermid. It re-unites Amelia with Red Productions, who brought Craven to life for Radio 4.

Made for Radio 4 Extra.

Series 1

Episode 1

Super-sharp everywoman Angela Barnes tackles life and love and, with the help of an audience, packs herself a fantasy coffin.

Remembering her larger-than-life father - a gregarious character, sex shop manager, naturist, and a big fan of caravans and pranks - Angela celebrates his 'carpe diem' approach to life, and his motto "You Can't Take It With You".

When her father died very suddenly in 2008, Angela and her family proved him wrong and stuffed his coffin with sentimental keepsakes for his final journey.

In this series, Angela does the very same thing and asks her loved ones to nominate objects that they would choose to send on with her as mementoes of their time together, which she keeps in a suitcase full of memories, acting as prompts for contemplative, heart-warming and captivating comedy.

Angela Barnes is a vivacious, critically acclaimed stand-up comic from Maidstone, Kent. After a career in health and social care, at aged 33 she decided to pursue a long held ambition and give comedy a go. Within a couple of years, Angela and her witty worldview had won the 2011 BBC New Comedy Award by a public vote, secured a weekly star slot in Channel 4's Stand Up For The Week and appeared on numerous radio and television shows including Loose Ends, The Now Show and writing credits on her beloved The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4), Russell Kane's Whistle Stop Tour (BBC Radio 2), Mock The Week (BBC 2) and Russell Howard's Good News (BBC 3).

David Jason stars with John Bird, Rory Bremner and Jan Ravens in David Renwick's dark sketch comedy that takes a post-apocalyptic and distinctly counter-factual look at the history of laughter....

This week JP Doom interviews Viktor Schmelling about his career in comedy from his humble beginnings as a joke writer for the Queen through to his current role as Emeritus Professor of Princeton University's Faculty of Laughter. His message - life is horrible - you better learn to see the funny side.

Among the classic comedy sketches Schmelling singles out for posterity are the atheist episode of Sunday Worship; an old lag and his pet orang-utan; and 1950's cult The Demob Mob's remarkable episode on Hitler, liquorish allsorts and the awesome power of the non-sequitur.

Just Say No

A sitcom, written by Moray Hunter and starring Angus Deayton, about five single, middle aged neighbours living in flats in a converted house in North London.

Mitch (Angus Deayton) is a widower and part-time therapist who is looking to put his life back together now that he is single and living - supposedly temporarily - with Will (Pearce Quigley), his younger, more volatile and unhappily divorced half-brother.

Elsewhere in the building are schoolteacher Ellie (Abigail Cruttenden) who is shy, nervous and desperately missing her ex-boyfriend, overly honest, frustrated actress Louisa (Kate Isitt), and socially inept IT nerd Morris (Bennett Arron).

In Just Say No, Mitch's inability to say no causes problems when he agrees to go for drinks with Ellie and a friend of hers, Marie (Hilary MacLean), who is keen to meet him, and then agrees also to help out Morris by making up a four for a dinner party on the same evening.

Louisa meanwhile has a big casting opportunity and, perhaps unwisely, enrols the services of Will to help her film a scene.

Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay Part 1/3

The third book in Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels, charting the lifelong relationship between two girls, Lila Cerullo and Elena Greco, who grew up together in the slums of post-War Naples.

Elena, having escaped to Milan after the publication of her first book, struggles to find the courage to live, parent and write again after her marriage to her increasingly dismissive husband Pietro.

Lila, meanwhile, also struggles to rise above her social conditions and desperately tries to find a way to better herself in whatever way she can. By day she suffers the daily abuse and exploitation at work in the local sausage factory and by night she works hard with her partner, Enzo, to make a difference with her life by studying hard the ever-changing face of technology.

Struggling with periods of mental darkness, she also wrestles with being a parent and finding the time to be true to herself. Eventually she is encouraged by a group of old friends and young students to admit her anger at the social adversity and abuses suffered by the women at work in the factory and to stand up and shout about it.

As always, amid the troubles, the two women turn to each other, gaining either strength or weakness from the other, not always to happy effect.
