SUN 16:00 Pepys: Fire of London (b01sc9cp)
London in 1666 was a health and safety nightmare. It was illegal to build with wood and thatch but people did it anyway. Foundries were forbidden in the city but that didn't stop them operating. Charles II had banned dangerous overhanging windows but this was ignored by local government who carried on building them regardless. Many homes still contained muskets and gunpowder left over from Cromwell's time. Six hundred tons of highly potent gunpowder were stored in the Tower of London itself. Riverfront warehouses were full of oil and tallow. There was no fire service.

In Pudding Lane, on 2 September, after a day of slaving over a hot oven, Thomas Farrinor, baker to King Charles II, went to bed unaware that his oven was still alight. The smouldering embers ignited some nearby firewood and by 1 o'clock in the morning his house was ablaze. A strong wind on that September morning ensured that sparks flew everywhere . . .

TUE 09:30 Ed Reardon's Week (b010j4pg)
Series 1

The Swim

Does it seem that the media is run by idiots, lying charlatans and moronic 12-year-olds who should've been drowned at birth in a bucket of raw sewage?

Welcome to the world of Ed Reardon, author, pipe smoker, consummate fare-dodger and master of the abusive e-mail.

Welcome to the world of Ed Reardon, writer and liver of life at the cutting edge. Above The Cutting Edge, to be accurate, a one-bedroom flat over a hairdresser's in Berkhamsted, where Ed has lived on his own since his wife and grown-up kids left him, forcing the sale of the London home.

Ed's first (and to date last) published novel Who Would Fardels Bear? was bought by Hollywood, relocated from Oldham to San Francisco and turned into a Sally Field movie ('Sister Mom') in the mid-70s. It was directed by Ed's best mate Jaz Milvane whose career has since gone stratospheric. Ed's broke up on re-entry; with the exception of his episode of Tenko in 1982, the royalties of which now amount to about GBP17 a year - but are anxiously awaited nonetheless.

Ed has often been forced to do a spot of lowbrow work for the ever popular Christmas book market. Jane Seymour's Household Hints (1996) and The Brand's Hatch Story got him through a couple of winters, although sadly his own proposal for a Little Book of Publishers Rejections was turned down because it ran to over two thousand pages.

Ed however remains bullishly optimistic, as the series reveals. He may have only one pair of trousers and a seven-figure Amazon sales ranking but no writer knows more about stealing his agent's stationery... and as a freeloader Ed Reardon is the acknowledged leader of his profession.

With his diary establishing dramatised scenes, each episode tracks Ed's flawed attempts to escape poverty and gain the literary success he strongly feels is due. Regular characters joining Ed on this journey include Felix (Ed's long-standing friend and former agent) Ping (his new '12 year-old' agent), the lively pensioners he teaches a screenwriting class to and the now irritatingly rich and successful, Jaz Milvane.

The combination of Ed's proud but penniless character and the sharp satire of the literary world makes Ed Reardon's Week a wonderfully perceptive and amusing listen.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2005.

TUE 11:00 Telling Tales (m000bdc7)
Katy Brand

There are two stars of this week’s Telling Tales: the writer, actor and comedian Katy Brand and Baby Houseman, a beloved screen character, who inspired Katy’s latest work.

Her book, I Carried A Watermelon, is named after a memorable line from Dirty Dancing, the 1987 coming-of-age story, that placed its young female lead firmly in the foreground.

We hear Katy read an extract from the audiobook, in which she describes watching the film for the first time, aged 11, and falling under the spell of Baby.

Katy reflects on the importance of female representation in film and the message at the centre of Dirty Dancing, which screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein had to fight to retain.

We also hear about a variety of Katy’s work, from the sketches and parodies of pop culture in Katy Brand’s Big Ass Show, to a very personal stand-up show that changed the direction of her career.

Finally, after tackling feminism, it would have been remiss to overlook her parody podcast, Women Like Us, which re-unites Katy with her long-time friend and collaborator Katherine Parkinson. We hear an early incarnation, via 2008’s Mouth Trap, before enjoying the pair laughing live on stage at the London Podcast Festival.

Made for Radio 4 Extra.

Meanwhile Katy Brand takes a guess at what the unit of measurement 'the Warhol' is and reveals that her favourite word is 'plop'.

This second episode of the series features The Stoneybridge Town Council attempting to cover up a possible bribery scandal, Denzil and Gwynned discussing son Codfyl's starring role in a nativity play, the Little Girl's very personal take on having her Tonsils out and Calum Gilhooley trying to get an appointment with a doctor for something "quite urgent".
