Chimps

They say, David Attenborough reports, that we share more of our genes with chimpanzees than any other species alive today. And this proximity of Homo Sapiens to the chimpanzee motivated Sir David even more to film behaviour never before seen.

It had been known for some time that chimps hunt monkeys for meat, but it would be a first to film it for TV audiences. To film such a hunt required days of waiting and tracking a troop through the Equatorial African forest - and when the hunt came and was over it changed Attenborough's view of chimps and their importance to us, forever.

Written and presented by David Attenborough.

SUN 11:00 Charles Parker Prize (m000lsjd)
2020

2020 is another year of exceptional student feature makers - celebrated in the annual Charles Parker Prize programme.

Awarded to university and college students across the UK in recognition of outstanding feature production, the prize is named after the famous radio producer Charles Parker.

Though the late 1950s and 60s, Charles Parker, along with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, produced a series of innovative programmes now known as the 'Radio Ballads' which arguably pioneered a new landscape of radio storytelling - combining interwoven interviews and original verbatim musical compositions.

Charles' daughter Sara Parker, herself an award-winning radio producer, introduces this year's winners and finalists, as we hear their journeys producing eight award-winning features on themes ranging from dementia, sex working, Cornish identity, film projection, and homelessness; all in celebration of her father's legacy.

This programme showcases extracts from all five winners of 2020; Alex Morgan, Charlotte Hurrell, Gabriel Green, Lewis Harrrower, and Richard Queree, as well as the three runner-up finalists; Bruce Guthrie, Chantal Herbert, and James Montague. You can hear the five winners' work in full in the series 'New Storytellers' on BBC Sounds.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000lsjj)
The Still Life Poet

Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects The Still Life Poet featuring the extraordinary life and work of little known Scottish poet, William Soutar who spent the last 13 years of his life in a bed.

Scotland's National Poet, Liz Lochhead, came across one poem of Soutar's that gave her the shivers, but she knows very little about the man and the rest of his work.

William Soutar produced many collections of poetry, most of which he wrote in one room and in what was to become his deathbed. Soutar had developed a debilitating condition of the spine which paralysed him from the waist down. Unable to move and with only a window to see the world, he became a Still Life Poet.

In his final years, Soutar wrote diaries which show a man with a wicked sense of humour, caricaturing his numerous bedside visitors and turning his ailments into playful rhymes. We also discover a mind that dissects everything from war, religion, sex and mortality, through to the songs sung by the blackbirds outside his window.

William Soutar was arguably one of Scotland's greatest poets and a key figure of the Scottish Literary Renaissance but why has his name been buried?

Liz Lochhead travels to the Soutar house in his hometown of Perth to find out and to assess how this sense of place, along with his disability, shaped his writing with the help of people who believe his name and work should be remembered.

Readings by Monty d'Inverno

A Number of Reasons I've Been Depressed, Lately; Diary extracts

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller is back on Radio 4 with more words of wit and wisdom. This week, A Number Of Reasons I've Been Depressed, Lately and some recent diary extracts.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Somewhere

A series about music that makes the hairs stand up on the back of our necks.

A hit from West Side Story, that yearns for a better world, has come to have special significance for many - from Mary Wilson of the Supremes who found it a fitting tribute to Martin Luther King, to the mother who sings it at the end of long frustrating days with her beloved autistic son. Plus, Stephen Sondheim and his daughter discuss writing the lyric and the relatively bad critical response to it.
