SAT 00:00 Earthsea (b0bnv2s1)
Series 2

Children of Fire and Earth

Kalessin, the eldest of dragons, brings a message to the people of Havnor. At last, the King and his council know what they must do: travel to the beating heart of all of Earthsea.

Ursula Le Guin's enduring fantasy saga - based on the novel The Other Wind adapted by Judith Adams.

Published between 1968 and 2001, the five novels and short story collection of Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea cycle (A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, The Other Wind and Tales from Earthsea) are re-told across twelve episodes. Series 2 takes in the action of Tehanu, The Other Wind and the short story Dragonfly from Tales of Earthsea.

Set on a vast archipelago of islands, where magic is a central part of life, they tell the stories of Tenar and Ged.

As a girl, Tenar, was taken from her home and family on the island of Atuan to become Arha, the Priestess Ever Reborn, guardian of the ominous Tombs of Atuan. Deep within the Tombs, Ged and Tenar met and became unlikely allies, escaped from Atuan, and brought peace to the troubled archipelago. Now in her late middle age, widowed and with grown up children, Tenar runs a farm on the island of Gont. She is reunited with Ged when he is brought back to the island of his birth on the back of a dragon.

Ged (also known as Sparrowhawk or Hawk) was born on Gont, with innate magical talent and a reckless nature. He trained in wizardry on the island Roke, where he released a terrible shadow into the world and then risked his life to restore the balance. He grew to become Archmage on Roke and the greatest wizard on all of Earthsea. When the evil wizard Cob attempted to cheat death and live forever, Ged found him and closed the breach between life and death. In doing so, he lost his powers of magic. While Tenar has traveled to Havnor, he has stayed at on Gont to mind the house.

SAT 05:00 Michael Frayn's Matchbox Theatre (b06s1b8t)
Episode 4

Michael Frayn: the most comic philosophical writer of our time.

An all-star cast has great fun with his hilarious view of us all. And the ways we attempt to communicate. And explain.

In this final part, we start by taking listeners direct from the Matchbox studio to a report from outside the National Theatre, where some long speeches are going on inside. Our reporter (Martin Jarvis) tells anchor Rosalind Ayres that it seems to be all about Hamlet. A couple (Lisa Dillon and Lloyd Owen), who have just been on a street demo, can't quite cast off their hectoring demeanour when ordering tea and buns. And Tom Hollander at a dinner party embarrasses a fellow guest with some surprisingly anti-social behaviour. A husband (Adam Godley) may have a communication problem.

In a bravura solo performance, Julia McKenzie attempts (on the phone) to communicate with the 'sofa disposal' department, but are they actually listening? And language becomes a problem for Ian Ogilvy as a hospital visitor - but who is really speaking gibberish?

SUN 10:00 Desert Island Discs Revisited (m0001x1q)
PD James

From Antonio Vivaldi to Oscar Wilde. Crime writer PD James shares her castaway choices with Sue Lawley.

PD James was born in Oxford, later moving to Ludlow on the Welsh Borders where she experienced a childhood which she says had more in common with a Victorian childhood than anything today. She was a well-behaved, quiet child who entertained herself and her siblings by telling and writing stories. Phyllis attended an old-fashioned grammar school where she enjoyed English lessons. She says "I knew I was going to write books".

Because of financial pressures at home, she had to leave school at 16, first following her father into the tax office, then in a theatre where she met her husband, who was training to be a doctor. World War Two intervened and, because her husband returned from work in the Medical Corps with a severe mental illness, Phyllis had to be the main breadwinner, working as principal hospital administrator at the North West Regional Hospital Board, London in charge of five psychiatric hospitals.

It wasn't until she was 39, whilst working in the hospital, that Phyllis began her first novel, Cover Her Face. "I knew it was something I was going to do, and it was just that life was so busy I didn't get round to it". She chose the name PD James because it looked good on a book jacket, and crime genre because she didn't want to draw on autobiographical details.

The book was immediately accepted by a publisher, and in 1979 she gave up her other jobs to become a full-time writer, focusing on Detective Adam Dalgleish of Scotland Yard as her main character. P D James was awarded the OBE in 1982 and made a Life Peer in 1992.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 1992.

Legendary comedy producer Harold Snoad and actor Michael Knowles reveal how they went about adapting the classic BBC TV hit series for radio – as the writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft were too busy to do it themselves.

Buddy, Can You Spare a Tie?; A Modest Proposal

He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

But these stories also helped Sofie deal with depression. A fact she has shared in her stand-up shows and her other work, including the 2019 book Happy Fat, which she has recorded as an audiobook for Audible.

We hear an extract from Sofie’s book, which is part memoir and part social commentary, with advice and cultural history dotted in between. Of particular interest to Sofie is how fat women are represented fictionally, in books and on screen.

Plus, we delve further into the history of food, and its long-established cultural connection to morality, with an extract from a documentary Sofie made with 7digital for Radio 4 in 2019, titled, The Unexpected History Of Clean Eating.

Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Episode 1

Adapted from the Jules Verne novel by Moya O'Shea

The first of the extraordinary tales from the golden age of adventure. Three intrepid explorers venture into the heart of a dormant Icelandic volcano where there is shock and peril at every turn beneath the earth's layers.

In the first drama from To The Ends of the Earth: extraordinary tales from the golden age of adventure, renowned professor, Otto Lidenbrock, discovers a mysterious, runic cryptogram in a rare manuscript he has bought. It is his nephew, Axel, who accidentally cracks the message which is by a sixteenth century alchemist who claims to have found a pathway to the centre of the earth! "Descend, bold traveller into the crater of the Jokul of Snæfell, which the shadow of Scartaris touches before the kalends of July and you will attain the centre of the earth."

Lidenbrock decides he must see for himself if such a journey is possible and with the reluctant Axel in tow, and the help of their guide, Hans, the three venture into the heart of a dormant, Icelandic volcano on a dangerous expedition beneath the earth's layers.

It's the ultimate adventure story in the best Victorian tradition with plenty of action, science, knowledge, discovery and surprise. The three attempting this tremendous feat are - the somewhat cowardly, dewy-eyed romantic, Axel; the highly strung and oh, so eccentric, Otto Lidenbrock and the calm, phlegmatic Danish speaking, Icelandic guide, Hans.

PD James died in November 2014 aged 94.

Episode 1

Radio 4's word-obsessed comedy panel game returns for a new series - with stars from across the world of wordplay coming together to score points off each other, under the well-read eye of chairman Gyles Brandreth.

This week's panellists are comedians Milton Jones and Alun Cochrane, Dictionary Corner's Susie Dent and Front Row critic Natalie Haynes.

On today's show Milton Jones coins his own new fear - the fear of becoming a monk: 'cloisterphobia'; Alun Cochrane's Yorkshire roots help him guess the meaning of the Polish word 'prozvonit';Susie Dent explains the origin of the phrase 'gingering up' and Natalie Haynes tries to ban the word 'guesstimate'.

Other panellists appearing in the series include Lloyd Langford, Dave Gorman, Richard Herring, Katy Brand, Robin Ince and Alex Horne - plus there's a very special guest appearance from Ainsley Harriott.

They'll be asked to guess the meanings of now-obsolete words, invent their own cliches and cockney rhyming slang, discuss their own favourite words and phrases - and suggest words they would like to ban.

Writers: Jon Hunter and James Kettle.
Producer: Claire Jones.
