SAT 05:00 Michael Frayn's Matchbox Theatre (b06pxyt0)
Episode 1

Michael Frayn: the most comic philosophical writer of our time.

An all-star cast has great fun with Frayn's hilarious view of us all. And of how we attempt to communicate.

In this opening episode, we hear Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam as stone effigies in a cathedral talking to each other like an old married couple. (Well, they've been together several hundred years. Nothing much changes.)

Then there's the younger couples - Charles Edwards and Sophie Winkleman bickering over who should finish who's sentences, and Lisa Dillon and Alex Jennings on the irritations that occur when discussing an apparently simple decision - whether or not to accept a kind invitation.

Martin Jarvis has trouble with a rarefied type of cold-calling - how to tell someone they've won a Nobel Prize. And we have an excerpt from a documentary on a species of creature that scurries and scuttles in the darkness. The wild life narrator sounds suspiciously like Sir David Attenborough. (It is.)

This series is Theatre in miniature. Short entertainments based on Frayn's acclaimed book, Matchbox Theatre. It’s the theatre of your imagination. Set design, ice-cream sales, packet of nuts, where to sit - it's up to you. Just sit back and enjoy.

This time Mark looks at "Tolerance" - Religious tolerance, moral tolerance, not striking the person next to you on the bus because they haven't worked out you can send a text without your phone beeping every time you press a key.

It's important to tolerate others' faults, their little quirks, and their massive despicable crimes. But can tolerance make us into doormats, allowing evil to thrive? Probably. Shame, that.

SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000l13m)
Hadraawi: The Shakespeare of Somalia

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's radio poetry archive and chooses Hadraawi: The Shakespeare of Somalia.

BBC Africa Editor Mary Harper meets Somalia's most beloved poet in a rare glimpse into the country's soul.

In Hargeisa, the capital of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland, everyone knows the nation’s most famous living poet – Hadraawi. They call him their Shakespeare. His work over the last 50 years has given voice to Somalis' desire for love, freedom, justice and peace.

The poetry of Mohamed Ibrahim Warsame ‘Hadraawi’ holds a mirror up to all aspects of life. Hadraawi’s poetry tells the story of modern Somalia.

Now in his 70s, this encounter with Hadraawi at his home in Somaliland was recorded just as the first rains fell after the devastating three-year drought. The self-declared republic is rarely seen by the outside world, as the shadow cast by the ongoing violence in Somalia to the south is long. But it’s a place Mary Harper has come to know and love during 25 years writing about and reporting on Somalia for the BBC.

It is a nation of poets, where poetry is woven deep into the fabric of everyday life.

Poems featured are from Hadraawi: The Poet and the Man, published by Ponte Invisible/Redsea Online/The Poetry Translation Centre. Clarity translated by WN Herbert and Said Jama Hussein, and The Killing of the She-Camel translated by WN Herbert, Said Jama Hussein and Maxamed Xasan 'Alto'.

Producer: Eve Streeter

SUN 13:00 Joe Queenan: My Years of Awe and Wonder (b07wxpqh)
John Sergeant introduces two decades of adventures in broadcasting with the best reviewed American on BBC radio - Joe Queenan.

From his early days presenting Postcard from Gotham through to Wonderful Ways to Make a Living, A Brief History of Irony and Hitler's Favourite Cowboy, Joe Queenan has always shown a delight in his interviewees. "Most journalists don't like people but I'm the complete opposite of that. For the brief moment that we meet, they become almost like friends. I remember all of them still."

You'll hear uncut and previously unbroadcast extended interviews, unsliced and undiced, with Ian Hislop, Germaine Greer, Kathy Lette and Armando Iannucci. John Sergeant reveals what it's like to be rung up and asked to give short, snappy thoughts on abstract subjects such as cunning, failure and blame. And then there's Queenan's unexpected and deep love of Britain (he is married to a woman from Stroud), plus his ongoing amazement that a poor boy from Philadelphia has been given the opportunity to work for the BBC: letters, he says, "that do resonate in America still".

"It's worth remembering that when you're doing these kinds of programmes, they become a part of your life. For four days that's all you're doing. But it's not a job. It's some sort of special adventure. You're meeting unusual people. You're in unusual places. You're doing an unusual thing, asking complete strangers bizarre questions that they hadn't expected you to ask. "

Produced in Bristol by Miles Warde.

Made for BBC Radio Extra 4 and first broadcast in 2016.

Series 1

Why Why WI?

Comedy about the inept staff at an historic house. Starring Simon Callow and Jane Horrocks.

Every year, thousands of tourists flock to the Lake District. But one place they never go to is Plum House - the former country home of terrible poet George Pudding (1779-1848). Now a crumbling museum, losing money hand over fist, it struggles to stay open under its eccentric curator Peter Knight (Simon Callow).

Can anyone save Plum House from irreversible decline?

Tom Collyer, sent from the Trust to do just that, seems to be the most likely candidate but the challenge is huge as he confronts the reality of winning round Peter Knight's handpicked team - the hopelessly out of touch deputy Julian (Miles Jupp), the corner-cutting gift shop manager Maureen (Jane Horrocks) intent on making profit from extremely cheap plum-themed merchandise, and maintenance man Alan (Pearce Quigley) who has heard the words "health" and "safety" but never in the same sentence.

In this opening episode, the museum's preparations for the annual WI visit include hiding away valuable artefacts as, according to Peter, some members are prone to stealing them. And Julian gives a disastrous lecture on the life and work of George Pudding.

Episode 1

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller is back with more words of wit and wisdom. He opens this series with a new story fresh from the pages of The New Yorker, Untamed, and extracts from his book Theft By Finding, a compilation of diary entries from 1977-2002.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

In The Independent on Sunday he is Wallace Arnold, he's Bel Littlejohn in The Guardian, and he has a diary in Private Eye under a number of topical guises. As well as writing comedy shows such as Norman Ormal for TV, Craig has a regular column in The Daily Telegraph, and his books include The Little Book of Chaos, The Marsh Marlowe Letters and The Hounding of John Thomas.

Katie Birkwood, the rare books and special collections librarian at the Royal College of Physicians, London, where she's worked for three years and recently curated a hugely popular exhibition on the life and book collection of John Dee. Katie regularly contributes to the journal Library & Information History, and has published on topics as diverse as the 16th century manuscripts collector Robert Cotton; the 17th archbishop James Ussher; depictions of venereal disease in early printed books, and the 20th century astronomer Fred Hoyle.

George Monbiot, a journalist best known for his environmental activism. His celebrated Guardian columns are syndicated all over the world, and he is the author of the bestselling books Captive State, The Age of Consent, as well as the investigative travel books Poisoned Arrows, Amazon Watershed and No Man's Land. His investigations in Africa, Asia, and the Americas have led to him to be declared persona non grata in seven countries, sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in Indonesia, shot at, beaten up by military police, shipwrecked and stung into a coma.

This week, the Museum's Guest Committee appreciate a mythical hotel from another age; a book that was stolen from the greatest library of the Tudor age; and the greatest bear that ever lived.

The show was researched by Mike Turner and Anne Miller of QI.
The producers were Richard Turner and James Harkin.
It was a BBC Studios Production.

The truth lies somewhere inbetween.

And at home? Well, naturally, his private life is chaotic. His wife has left him, taking custody of his 8-year-old son Justin jnr, and is in the process of taking him to the cleaners. So he's back on the market. As is his house - so he's currently living in his father-in-law's spare room in Bury. The only person who understands him is his Gran, living in luxury in an old folk's home in Warrington. Oh, and his producer Bryn, but this might not be a good thing.

Despite all this mess, Justin always remains positive. Every new day is a new opportunity, "When life throws you lemons, make lemonade".

3. People Like Us and Dead Ringers

The history of radio's ability to parody itself goes back almost to the birth of radio. The range of this parody is so wide - news, current affairs, drama, the arts, phone-ins, investigative journalism - that the production team on this programme decided that a single presenter simply wouldn't do it justice.

‘Parody Please’ is co-presented by a truly exceptional range of favourite radio voices, including Charlotte Green and Kirsty Young and Ruth from the Archers, who collectively explore why radio is the best medium for parody, and its important role in our society, perhaps today more than ever.

In the last of three programmes, Jan Ravens joins this roster of celebrities to talk with the distinguished radio critic Gilllian Reynolds CBE.

THU 22:30 Ability (b087p7m6)
Episode 1

Lost Voice Guy (real name Lee Ridley) won the BBC Radio Stand-Up Comedy Award in 2014. He is a funny guy. He also has cerebral palsy and can only speak via a computer. Ability uses Lee's experiences of coping with this disability and weaves them into a sitcom.

It is based around Matt, who is leaving home for the first time to move in with Jess, his best friend from school. Matt's parents are worried, particularly his dad - they have always done everything for him. But Matt is determined even though his new carer, Bob, is not all he should be. Bob is new to the role, and although willing, he somehow manages to spend more time dealing weed and flogging knocked off TVs than cooking Matt's tea. But he treats Matt like an equal, and not all his previous carers have done that, and so the two form a bond. A bond that could lead Matt into an awful lot of trouble. Especially as Matt has never been above exploiting his circumstances if the situation arises - he's always known he could get away with murder (although he's never actually tried that of course.) But who would suspect the disabled guy? Could Matt and Bob become the new Del boy and Rodney? And if so, which is which?

Episode 2

Michael Frayn - the most comic philosophical writer of our time. An all-star cast has great fun with Frayn's hilarious view of us all. People talking. To each other, to the world at large, to themselves. Explaining. Heard, overheard, half-heard.

In Episode 2, we eavesdrop on two strangers in a café. Patricia Hodge is the woman who can't get names right. Joanna Lumley, listening in at the next table, longs to correct her. Adam Godley becomes increasingly obsessive in a doctor's surgery. Matthew Wolf, attending a lecture on words, doesn't care for the phrase 'if you like'. Sophie Winkleman and Charles Edwards, trying to find their destination, have 'WIC' - that's 'Words in Car'. Stephen Fry is a politician who believes he has mastered the intricacies of his mobile phone. Tom Hollander and Nigel Anthony share confidences in their own mathematically precise language. And Julian Sands suffers at the hands of Martin Jarvis' Pinteresque writer-tormentor.

This four-part series is Theatre in miniature. Short entertainments based on Frayn's recently acclaimed book, Matchbox Theatre. His brand new collection, now on the radio - the theatre of the listener's imagination. Set design, ice-cream sales, packet of nuts, where to sit - it's up to you. Just sit back and enjoy.
