Faith

Mark Watson continues his quest to improve the world, nimbly assisted by Tim Key and Tom Basden.

As broadcast live in November 2011 - Mark invites the audience join in via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.

Mark asks the big questions that are crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - in a dynamic and thought-provoking new format he opens the floor to the live audience and asks them to jump into the conversation via tweets and messages to work out how we can all make the world a better place.

This time Mark asks - What is faith? One of the most used, and feared, words of modern times. Yet these days, it's often used derisively about religious beliefs and so on. We look at odd things done in the name of 'faith', versus the obvious merits of having faith (belief that England will eventually win World Cup, ability to ride out difficult marriages). Should we be more credulous and believe people like estate agents? Or LESS credulous and destroy our TV sets altogether in case we accidentally absorb lies?

Producer: Lianne Coop

First broadcast live on BBC Radio 4 in November 2011.

The conclusion of series two of Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien race that have noticed that those all-at-once invasions of Earth never work out that well. So they've locked the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green behind an impenetrable force field in order to study human behaviour and decide if Earth is worth invading.

The only inhabitant who seems to be bothered by their new alien overlord is Katrina Lyons, who was only home for the weekend to borrow the money for a deposit for a flat when the force field went up.

So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she forms The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard who wish she wouldn't make so much of a fuss, and much to the annoyance of Field Commander Uljabaan who, alongside his unintelligible minions and The Computer (his hyper-intelligent supercomputer), is trying to actually run the invasion.

Richard Lyons ...... Peter Davison
Margaret Lyons ...... Jan Francis

SUN 13:00 The Big Steptoe Radio Show: Ray Galton and Alan Simpson (b007jwm9)
The duo behind the BBC's legendary rag and bone men comedy - writers Ray Galton and Alan Simpson present their favourite episodes of Steptoe and Son.

This includes the very first episode, 'The Offer' – originally made for BBC TV's 'Comedy Playhouse' - one of ten one-off comedies penned by Ray and Alan. BBC bosses viewed it as a sweetener for the duo, who'd recently parted company with Tony Hancock. Despite several strong concepts, only 'The Offer' progressed from pilot to series development.

The TV pilot aired in January 1962, followed by the first Steptoe series in June starring Wilfrid Brambell and Harry H Corbett as father and son duo, Albert and Harold Steptoe.

Revealing how the series was created, the writers also explain why it prompted concerns in Parliament.

The duo's selected episodes were all adapted from the TV scripts and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio by Gale Pedrick.

SUN 16:00 Drama (b07q232z)
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner

It's the late 1950s: Borstal boy Smith remembers his crimes and plots his future as he runs, training for the national cross-country event. The governor is desperate for the kudos of victory, telling Smith that hard work and athletic success will turn him into an honest man.

At only 17 years old, Smith is a genuinely angry young man. His life is already a battle between them and us. There are the In-laws, as he terms the law-abiding, property owning majority, and the Out-laws, the substantial minority who have no stake in the system.

First published in 1959, Alan Sillitoe's landmark short story is uncompromisingly tough, at times bleakly comic, and always totally unsentimental.

Dramatised by Robert Rigby.

Elif Shafak

Elif Shafak has published seventeen books – fiction and non-fiction – and taught at academic institutions around the word.

Born in France, Elif has lived in Turkey, Jordan, and the United States, and currently divides her time between Istanbul and London. A passionate proponent of internationalism and cosmopolitanism, Elif has said that if she had to choose one homeland, then it would be storyland, where characters are complex and readers can learn from walking in other people's shoes.

In this episode of Telling Tales, Elif talks about her love for Istanbul, and shares the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of Turkey’s cultural capital in the documentary, Reimagining The City. It is a Falling Tree production that first broadcast on Radio 4 in 2013.

With writing very politicised in Turkey, Elif also remembers the surreal experience of being put on trial for words uttered by fictional characters in her 2006 novel, The Bastard Of Istanbul, which was dramatised for Radio 4 in 2018.

We hear about the cemetery which inspired Elif’s new novel, 10 Minutes and 38 Seconds in this Strange World, which has since been nominated for the prestigious Booker prize.

Elif also talks about the six stories shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize, which help promote empathy and understanding – a mission that is very close to Elif’s heart.

Produced and presented for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Ali Gardiner.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2019.

TUE 23:00 Ida Barr: Artificial Hip Hop (b00v1qvw)
Choice

By Christopher Green.

Ida Barr is a music hall singer who has embraced hip hop and rap, reflecting the cultural diversity of London's East End, where she has been living in retirement for several decades. Ida has a genuine love of talking to people so each week she investigates a new topic and creates a unique brand of music-hall, hip-hop fusion with beat boxer Shlomo. This week, the topic is "Choice".

Produced by Claire Grove

Ida Barr is the creation of award-winning performer Christopher Green (aka spoof country and western singer Tina C). "Missy Elliott meets Marie Lloyd" - Guardian. Each week Ida investigates a current political buzz word - Choice, Responsibility, Diversity and Transparency - and records her findings on her Ida-pod - an ancient battery operated cassette machine with a greasy earpiece. Her target groups include the Sutton House over 55's drama group, children from the Italia Conti Aacademy and Theatre Venture's Youth Company from Stratford East.

Beat box artist Shlomo was heard by 3.9 billion people around the world when he and Bjork performed "Oceania" at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympics. He has also worked with artists such as Martha Wainwright, Damon Albarn, and Nitin Sawhney. He is a classically-trained percussionist and heads the world's only human beatbox choir, the Vocal Orchestra.

Christopher Green has written and performed three Tina C series for BBC R4 plus Tina C's Election Night BBQ Special (Nov 2008). 'Ida Barr's Bingo' was at the Brighton Festival and the South Bank earlier this year and 'Ida Barr: So This Is Christmas' was at the Barbican Centre in December 2008.

Schrodinger's Birkenstock Interface Situation

Series six of more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave. Written by and starring Donald Mcleary and Sanjeev Kohli.

Set in a Scots-Asian corner shop, the award winning Fags, Mags & Bags sees a return of all the shop regular characters, and some guest appearances along the way, from the likes of Julia Deakin and Mina Anwar.

In this episode, tempers are frayed as Lovely Sue and Mrs Birkett set up competing choirs for The West of Scotland community choir-off, and Sanjay and his mate Grebo make Mrs Begg an internet star.

Join the staff of Fags, Mags and Bags in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of over 30 years and is a firmly entrenched, friendly presence in the local area. He is joined by his shop sidekick, Dave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business. Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them - whether they like it or not!
