SUN 12:00 Poetry Extra (m000k1yj)
Hilda Doolittle

Poet Daljit Nagra chooses the very best programmes from the BBC's poetry archive and this week selects: Hilda Doolittle.

It is more than one hundred years since the American poet Hilda Doolittle came to live in London. She lived through explosive changes in twentieth century culture with her dramatic life often overshadowing her work.

Considered for decades as Ezra Pound's Imagiste acolyte, she held her own through psychoanalysis with Freud, travelled extensively, had numerous long term relationships with both men and women, and an intense emotional and artistic connection with DH Lawrence.

Yet it was her poetry that was the core of her being. Though her early Imagist poems are her best known work, it was World War 2 that saw her at the height of her powers. Breaking from the Imagist tradition, in Trilogy, her epic poem, she reports on the war torn city from a pacifist perspective. The life of the bombed city is central and Doolittle redefines the heroic in terms of the suffering of ordinary people. Her trilogy is ranked alongside and Eliot's Four Quartets and Pound's Pisan Cantos as among the greatest civilian poetry of war in the 20th century.

Writer and broadcaster Diana Collecott is our guide to the world of Hilda Doolittle and Sara Kestelman reads a selection of her poetry.

Producer: Merilyn Harris
A Testbed production for BBC Radio 4

First broadcast in 2011.

A full dramatisation of tales from his own childhood. Sometimes magical, sometimes grotesque but always true, Dahl's boyhood stories are as remarkable as the acclaimed fiction he would go on to write as an adult.

"An autobiography is a book a person writes about his own life. It is usually full of all sorts of boring details. This is not an autobiography."

The story of Roald Dahl's childhood is filled with excitement and wonder but also terror and great sadness. We learn of his experiences at cruel boarding schools, his daring Great Mouse Plot, the dangers of Boazers, the pleasure/pain of the local sweetshop and his time as a chocolate taster. Just some of the marvellous, extraordinary events that no doubt went on to inspire his best-selling books.

Patrick Malahide provides the voice of Dahl in a colourful adaptation by Lucy Catherine.

TUE 11:00 Telling Tales (m00046ks)
Daniel Lawrence Taylor

One of BAFTA’S Breakthrough Brits of 2018, the writer, actor and comedian Daniel Lawrence Taylor, joins us to talk creativity and time travel.

Daniel saw himself playing dramatic roles but after winning laughs in comic plays and sketch shows at university, he formed the double act Ginger and Black, with Eri Jackson.

He writes and stars in the television comedy series Timewasters, which first transported a struggling jazz quartet back to 1920s London, via a South London lift. Series two brings the band mates into the 1950s, with the newly settled Windrush generation, and the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll.

Race is an important issue in Daniel’s work. When Timewasters was commissioned, he commented that you didn’t see that many black people in period dramas, or in time machines, so he decided to write about both - with award-winning results!

We also revisit a drama which Daniel wrote for Radio 4, and made its debut in February 2019. Titled Black Boy Fly, and set in London, the thoughtful and comic drama looks at community and gentrification. It was directed by Jonquil Panting.

Produced and presented by Ali Gardiner for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Episode 6

A bittersweet comedy drama about a community mental health nurse created by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings.

Liz (played by Esther Coles), the community psychiatric nurse of the title makes her rounds to visit "service users" in their homes. Most of those patients are played by comedy chameleon Paul Whitehouse himself – with supporting roles for Rosie Cavaliero, Vilma Hollingbery and Cecilia Noble.

Whitehouse brings us an obese bed-bound mummy's boy, an agoraphobic ex-con, a manic ex-glam rock star, ageing rake Herbert who hoards his house with possessions and memories, a Jewish chatterbox in unrequited love with his Jamaican neighbour, and a long-suffering carer and his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother.

There are new characters too in the guise of a self-proclaimed DJ and a Geordie struggling with his wife's job in the world's oldest profession.

We follow their humorous, sometimes sad and occasionally moving interactions with Liz, whose job is to assess their progress, dispense medication and offer support.

Nurse gives a sympathetic insight into the world of some of society's more marginalised people in a heartfelt and considered way.

WED 07:30 Stand-Up Specials (b0b4zg8c)
Ashley Blaker's Goyish Guide to Judaism - 1

Ashley Blaker, Britain's only ultra-Orthodox stand up comedian, presents an insider's view of his religion, specially created for BBC Radio 4. It's a whistle-stop tour of Jewish life and, in particular, a very rare glimpse into the normally inaccessible world of strict Orthodox Judaism.

Ashley is already a well-known name in the Jewish community, having undertaken two critically acclaimed UK tours as well as performing sell-out shows in Israel, South Africa, Canada and Off-Broadway in New York. The Jewish press has described him as "the haredi Michael McIntyre".

As well as being a popular and experienced live performer, Ashley is also a comedy writer and producer for radio and TV. He was responsible for first unleashing Little Britain on an unsuspecting nation on Radio 4. But, being a strict orthodox Jew, he is surely the only person who works in TV without actually owning one.

The Jerusalem Post recently described Ashley as "a walking contradiction".

The Times of Israel pointed out the astonishment his appearance can provoke: "The astonishment, of course, is that with Blaker, what you see is what you get: a skinny bearded man wearing a black suit and kippah, and sporting peyot and tzitzit of the strictly Orthodox community to which he now belongs. But this is not a uniform which he dons only for his interfaces with Jewish audiences. No, he wears this in his day job too."

WED 22:30 What's Funny About ... (m000k22t)
W1A

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Hugh Bonneville and John Morton about W1A, their much loved satire of the BBC.

They discuss where the idea for W1A came from (there is, you’ll be pleased to hear, a fold up bike involved). John reveals which BBC grandee offered his services when it came to researching the show. Hugh talks about the challenges of playing Ian Fletcher and Downton’s Earl of Grantham, often at the same time (and how it all actually helped W1A to prise a bit more cash out of the BBC!). And we hear what Ian Fletcher might be doing next.

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy? Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.

We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Original W1A clips written by:

John Morton

Producer: Owen Braben

An Expectation production made for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

FRI 09:00 Wordaholics (b01cvk8d)
Series 1

Episode 3

Wordaholics is Radio 4's brand new comedy panel game all about words.

Gyles Brandreth presides as linguistic brainboxes and comedians vie for supremacy in the ring.

Today's show features Fresh Meat star Jack Whitehall, Radio 4 regular Milton Jones and Countdown stalwart Susie Dent as well as Greek scholar and all-round clever clogs Natalie Haynes.

Today they reveal their least favourite words, attempt to decipher Cockney rhyming slang and try to guess the meaning of some words no longer in our common parlance, taken from the 1736 Dictionary of Canting Slang.

Gyles is the longest-serving wordsmith in Countdown's Dictionary Corner and the author of numerous wordplay books. But now it's time for him to encourage other people to show off their knowledge of words and playfulness with language.

Wordaholics is clever, intelligent, witty and unexpected. There are toponyms, abbreviations, euphemisms, old words, new words, cockney rhyming slang, Greek gobbledegook, plus the panellists' picks of the ugliest and the most beautiful words: the whole world of words in twenty-eight minutes.

Find out the meaning of words like giff-gaff, knock-knobbler and buckfitches - the difference between French marbles, French velvet and the French ache - hear the glorious poetry of the English language, as practiced from writers varying from William Shakespeare to Vanilla Ice - and spend half an hour laughing and learning with some of the finest Wordaholics in the business.

Writers: Jon Hunter and James Kettle
Producer: Claire Jones.
