Firstly, following on from the Black Lives Matter protests happening across the world, a selection of podcasts to help you learn about the history of race and racism, and actions you can take now. Also suggestions of nature podcasts which discuss environmental activism and encourage positive change. Including Costing The Earth, Mothers of Invention, Black Nature Narrative, Outrage and Optimism, and So Hot Right Now.

And what is a branded podcast?
More and more companies are not just buying advertising, but commissioning entire podcast series to spread the word about their brand.
We hear from Radio Wolfgang's Holly Aquilina and Elle Scott, the team behind last year's award winning 'Selfridges Hot Air' to find out why companies are investing in this medium, and what goes into creating a successful series.

We also hear the 2020 British Podcast Award nominations for Best Branded podcast; #QueerAF, DeepMind: The Podcast, Meet Me At The Museum, On the Marie Curie Couch, The Penguin Podcast, and The Rough Guide to Everywhere.

But despite his extraordinary travels, there is one part of the globe that's eluded Sir David. As a young man and a keen rock-climber, he yearned to conquer the highest peak in the world.

"I won't make it now - I won't make it to base camp now - but as a teenager, I thought that the only thing a red-blooded Englishman really should do was to climb Everest."

"When everybody leaves school, whether they are a boy or a girl, what do they have to do in the home? They have to produce a meal. They haven't been taught to do it. I think it should be essential."

SAT 22:30 Chain Reaction (b08dn2gq)
Series 12

Sara Cox Interviews Joe Lycett

The return of the hostless chat show as presenter Sara Cox interviews comedian Joe Lycett.

Chain Reaction is the talk show with a twist where one week's interviewee becomes the next week's interviewer. John Cleese was first in the hot seat back in 1991 and since then, a procession of big names from the world of comedy and entertainment including Jennifer Saunders, Jarvis Cocker and Eddie Izzard have helped continue the chain.

Since the early days of The Girlie Show on Channel 4, Sara Cox has gone on to become one of the UK's best loved presenters. She is perhaps most well-known as a ratings hit in the early morning breakfast chair on BBC Radio 1 and her regular TV and radio appearances since then have included hosting BBC 2's Great Pottery Throw Down, appearing on myriad panel shows and pressing the nation's collective nostalgia button every Friday night on her very own Radio 2 Sounds of the Eighties show.

Sara's interview pick is Joe Lycett because "he makes me happy" and because someone needed to finally chart his much discussed journey "from Birmingham to 10th hottest man in the world". Joe is a stand-up comedian who some know as "the parking fine man" from 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown while others celebrate him for any number of acclaimed live tours and festival shows that have delighted the British comedy viewing public in recent years. This programme not only confirms that Joe is a man who can famously write a show title - "That's the Way A Ha A Ha, Joe Lycett" and "If Joe Lycett Then You Should Have Put a Ring On It" to name just two - but also hints at a addictive fondness for baths.

DNA Doesn't Lie

True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces tales from the digital space where our boundaries are changing.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room, The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

First broadcast in the USA in 2019.

Questioning Loyalties

Field Commander Uljabaan's loyalty cards, rewarding villagers for their collaboration, are not only ruining Katrina's plans but also Richard's chances in the weekly pub quiz. They turn to Ron, the landlord of the Rose & Crown for help in scuppering the scheme.

Series two of Eddie Robson's sitcom about an alien race that have noticed that those all-at-once invasions of Earth never work out that well. So they've locked the small Buckinghamshire village of Cresdon Green behind an impenetrable force field in order to study human behaviour and decide if Earth is worth invading.

The only inhabitant who seems to be bothered by their new alien overlord is Katrina Lyons, who was only home for the weekend to borrow the money for a deposit for a flat when the force field went up.

So along with Lucy Alexander (the only teenager in the village, willing to rebel against whatever you've got) she forms The Resistance - slightly to the annoyance of her parents Margaret and Richard who wish she wouldn't make so much of a fuss, and much to the annoyance of Field Commander Uljabaan who, alongside his unintelligible minions and The Computer (his hyper-intelligent supercomputer), is trying to actually run the invasion.

Victoria Wood

From The Doobie Brothers to Tom Waits. Comedy star Victoria Wood CBE shares her castaway choices with Kirsty Young

For decades Victoria has been one of our best-loved writers and performers. Her TV highlights - Acorn Antiques, Dinnerladies and Housewife 49 - have won her a devoted following as well as stacks of awards.

But, in a moving and open interview, she describes how, as a teenager, she felt she was a misfit - she had few friends, she struggled with her weight and at school she used to steal other people's homework. She joined a youth theatre and it was, she says, the saving of her. She found like-minded people and a sense that she had something to offer.

Victoria is very careful about how much of her own life she puts into her work. She doesn't mind saying she cuts her pubic hair with nail-scissors, but rarely discusses her children on the stage.

Victoria reveals her favourite tracks, book and luxury.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2007.

When Ronald's guardian, Father Francis Xavier Morgan, found out, he forbade him to see Edith again until he came of age at 21. Ronald reluctantly obeyed and later left the city after winning an exhibition to Oxford. Edith went to live in Cheltenham. At midnight on the night he turned 21, Ronald wrote to Edith declaring his undying feelings. Unfortunately, in the intervening years, she had got engaged to someone else. Jessica Hynes

Jessica Hynes joins us to talk writing, deadlines and her big screen directorial debut.

The BAFTA Award winning actor is known for her comic roles in The Royle Family and W1A, as well as films like Shaun Of The Dead, Son Of Rambow and Paddington 2.

She is also a writer, who co-wrote Spaced with Simon Pegg; and is adding director to her CV with The Fight.

Jessica talks about the box fit class which inspired her tale of triumph, over everyday adversity.

We also revisit a drama that Jessica wrote for Spike Milligan’s birth centenary, and which she performed onstage in Hull, as part of the BBC’s Contains Strong Language Festival.

Titled Deadline, Jessica’s story colourfully conjures the stress of an unfinished and overdue script, something she has experienced first-hand. It first broadcast on BBC Radio 3 in 2018.

Produced and presented by Ali Gardiner for BBC Radio 4 Extra.

Episode 5

A bittersweet comedy drama about a community mental health nurse created by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings.

Liz (played by Esther Coles), the community psychiatric nurse of the title makes her rounds to visit "service users" in their homes. Most of those patients are played by comedy chameleon Paul Whitehouse himself – with supporting roles for Rosie Cavaliero, Vilma Hollingbery and Cecilia Noble.

Whitehouse brings us an obese bed-bound mummy's boy, an agoraphobic ex-con, a manic ex-glam rock star, ageing rake Herbert who hoards his house with possessions and memories, a Jewish chatterbox in unrequited love with his Jamaican neighbour, and a long-suffering carer and his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother.

There are new characters too in the guise of a self-proclaimed DJ and a Geordie struggling with his wife's job in the world's oldest profession.

We follow their humorous, sometimes sad and occasionally moving interactions with Liz, whose job is to assess their progress, dispense medication and offer support.

Nurse gives a sympathetic insight into the world of some of society's more marginalised people in a heartfelt and considered way.

Goodness Gracious Me

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Meera Syal and Anil Gupta about their ground breaking sketch show Goodness Gracious Me.

They discuss the impact the show had on popular culture and how they feel they were treated by the BBC, the broken video camera at their first ever showcase that meant that Goodness Gracious Me very nearly never happened, and what sort of show Meera thinks the GGM team should get back together and make.

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy? Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.

We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Published in 1821, The Spy was the first commercially successful American work of popular fiction. On top of that, it is also generally regarded as the world's first espionage novel. Until Fenimore Cooper, spies in fiction had been villains, the lowest of the low. But in creating Harvey Birch (played here by Burn Gorman), a double agent during the American War of Independence, Cooper began the tradition of spy-as-hero, leading to the great genre novels of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Set in Westchester County, New York State, in 1778, we meet Harvey Birch, a mysterious pedlar, when he turns up unexpectedly at The Locusts, a house in no-man's-land between British and American forces, owned by the wealthy Wharton family. The Whartons are a family of divided loyalties: one of the daughters, Frances, is engaged to an American officer. The other, Sarah, is a romantic royalist. Birch who, with his father, lives in a small house nearby is, it is rumoured, a double agent and both sides have put a price on his head. His house has been attacked by British forces, and Birch has been forced to take to the dangerous road...

Travelling on foot with his salesman's pack on his back, Birch appears to steer clear of political or military allegiances, trading with both sides. Yet whenever the honour and the safety of decent people is in danger, Birch is at hand. He suffers appalling indignities, is robbed, burnt out of his home by the terrifying Skinners - American outlaws posing as Patriot irregulars - and is sentenced to death by the American forces. He never uses his privileged position to save his own skin, for, only at the very end of the story is it revealed, that he has a personal commission - from George Washington himself.

Episode 2

Wordaholics is Radio 4's comedy panel game all about words.

Gyles Brandreth presides as linguistic brainboxes and comedians including the legendary Stephen Fry, Fresh Meat star Jack Whitehall, Radio 4 regular Milton Jones and Countdown stalwart Susie Dent vie for supremacy in the ring.

This week linguistic brainbox Natalie Haynes and poet Michael Rosen vie for wordy supremacy with comedians Arthur Smith and Paul Sinha.

Gyles is the longest-serving wordsmith in Countdown's Dictionary Corner and the author of numerous wordplay books. But now it's time for him to encourage other people to show off their knowledge of words and playfulness with language.

Wordaholics is clever, intelligent, witty and unexpected. There are toponyms, abbreviations, euphemisms, old words, new words, cockney rhyming slang, Greek gobbledegook, plus the panellists' picks of the ugliest and the most beautiful words: the whole world of words in twenty-eight minutes.

Find out the meaning of words like giff-gaff, knock-knobbler and buckfitches - the difference between French marbles, French velvet and the French ache - hear the glorious poetry of the English language, as practiced from writers varying from William Shakespeare to Vanilla Ice - and spend half an hour laughing and learning with some of the finest Wordaholics in the business.
