The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

SAT 00:00 The Second Pan Book of Horror Stories (m0000z4y)
The Judge's House by Bram Stoker

A scholar moves into the former home of a judge with an evil reputation.

Written by Bram Stoker.

The Pan Book of Horror Stories was a paperback series of short story anthologies first published in 1959. The early editions were known for their lurid cover art and editor Herbert Van Thal’s pick of stories by new authors alongside classics of the genre. It was credited with introducing a new generation to the horror tradition – back in the 1960s, volumes were handed round in school playgrounds in the same way that kids trade computer games today.

The Second Pan Book Of Horror Stories, published in 1962, was considered to be one of the best. Anita Sullivan has selected five from this edition for her own fresh interpretation.

University Of Aberdeen

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Aberdeen with specialist subjects including Law, Language and Linguistics and Music and questions ranging from Scottish Gaelic fishing jargon to Scottish Stop and Search Law via mallets, marimbas and a dead pigeon.

The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Ed Sheeran. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

Other Universities featured in this series include Royal Holloway University of London, Plymouth, St Catharine’s College Cambridge, Brighton and Oxford Brookes.

Sayers' first Lord Peter Wimsey novel was published in the 1920s, the Golden Age of crime fiction, and he is still very much with us, appearing often on BBC Radio 4 Extra.

She went on to enjoy a huge popularity with her crime novels and then turned to writing Christian essays and plays, most notably the series for the BBC on the life of Christ – which stirred up a great controversy as no-one had before impersonated Jesus on the radio.

The Tertiary Phase

Fit The Fourteenth

Arthur and Ford have travelled in time and arrive at Lords Cricket Ground, where England are defeating Australia to win The Ashes. It turns out our heroes have arrived 24 hours before the destruction of the planet, but this fact almost pales into insignificance with the appearance of Slartibartfast, the elderly planet designer Arthur first encountered on Magrathea (see Primary Phase).

Slarti is here to avert the disastrous abduction of The Ashes (which have some intergalactic significance we can as yet only guess at) by the villainous and lethal Krikkit Robots. This he utterly fails to do, as they arrive, blow up Lords, and leave with their booty. Slarti, Arthur and Ford give chase in the unlikely Starship Bistromath which is powered by the equally unlikely (though not improbable) Somebody Else's Problem Field.

On the swamp planet Squornshellous Zeta, Marvin the Paranoid Android is still helplessly trudging in circles, anchored to one spot by an artificial leg he was fitted with after surviving a near miss with the heart of a blazing star (again, see Primary Phase, and try and keep up for goodness' sake). It is something of a relief for him to have the leg removed by the same eleven Krikkit Robots who have stolen The Ashes. It is even more of a relief when they decide to remove him as well, leaving his talkative but very boring companion, Zem the Mattress, to ponder the infinite and globber gently.

Professor Heinz Wolff

From Marlene Dietrich to Rod Stewart. Scientist Heinz Wolff shares his castaway choices with Sue Lawley.

Professor Heinz Wolff came to public attention when he presented TV's The Great Egg Race, in which he challenged people to conquer engineering problems with a rubber band, a pencil and a pickled onion.

It was his father who encouraged his enthusiasm for invention, sharing his Sunday afternoons experimenting with his chemistry set, or organising talks from physicists who had to hide their surprise at assessing the ideas of a six-year-old child.

In the 1970s while designing aids for disabled people, Professor Heinz devised the phrase 'Tools for Living' to describe his work. After all, as he points out, we all use tools to cope with our environment, whether as an astronaut, a diver or an elderly person.

In the 80s, he founded the Institute for Bioengineering at Brunel University. There he continued his inventions devising for example, a box for experimenting in outer space, a voice machine for people who can't speak and a safety system for deep-sea divers.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 1998.

The Magazine Modern Poetry in Translation was founded by Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort in 1965. It's hard to believe that before this, British poetry had no real access to work beyond its borders. We hear from former editor David Constantine and his replacement Sasha Dugdale about the magazine's history and future.

Karine Polwart

An exploration of the art of storytelling in song, with the musician and writer Karine Polwart.

Karine has won six BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including 2018 Folk Singer of The Year. Her seventh album, Laws Of Motion, was released in October, with songs spanning moments from history and her own life.

One song, which she first performed at Celtic Connections in 2017, addresses Donald Trump from the point of view of the ancient, metamorphic rock lying beneath the Isle Of Lewis.

In 2016, Karine wrote, musically directed, and performed in Wind Resistance, a critically acclaimed theatrical meditation on midwifery, ecology, sanctuary, and solidarity.

Karine’s radio work, meanwhile, includes several compositions for the BBC’s ground-breaking Radio Ballads series, which marked the centenary of the end of the First World War - as we feature Hospitals broadcast on Radio 2 as part of The Ballad Of The Great War: 1917.

We also revisit an essay Karine delivered on BBC Radio 3, My Life In Music: Craigie Hill, which reflects on family, loss, memory and the power of a good song.

But as time passes, and memories of home grow faint, tensions mount and their unity and order is sorely tested.

Judith Adams' four-part dramatisation captures the adventure, atmosphere and chilling undertones of Golding's tragic vision.

Evolution

Following a hugely successful first series, which drew praise from the likes of David Walliams and Ben Stiller, Alex and Ben are back with their weird twist on the double-act sketch show. Strap in for a 15 minute delve in to a world of oddness performed in front of a live studio audience.

This week, The Pin are out to evolve - which means new features (and new total misunderstandings about how existence works).

About The Pin
The Pin are an award-winning comedy duo, and legends of Edinburgh festival. They deconstruct the sketch form, in a show that exists somewhere between razor-sharp smartness and utterly joyous silliness.

After a sold-out run in Edinburgh, and a string of hilarious performances across BBC Radio 4 Extra, BBC 3, Channel 4, and Comedy Central, this is The Pin’s debut solo show for Radio 4. Join them as they celebrate, make, collapse and rebuild their jokes, each other, and probably the radio too.

For fans of Adam and Joe, Vic and Bob, and Fist of Fun - a show of absurd offerings from two loveable idiots.

- 'The Pin prove it's still possible to play with the conventions of the medium of sketch comedy.’ - The Guardian
- 'Knowing and inventive: a 15 minute blast.' - The Times
- 'The sketches are funny, and made special by Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen also examining, subverting and reversing familiar tropes. The material is excellent.' - Radio Times
- 'Eviscerating their chosen form completely.' - The Sunday Times
- 'A very classy, very funny show indeed.' - The Telegraph

WED 07:30 Quanderhorn (m000hn5w)
Quanderhorn 2

1. Killdiboos and Universibold Explodibangbang

Mercurial genius, Professor Quanderhorn (James Fleet) has created a time loop, rendering it permanently 1952.

His arch nemesis, Churchill (John Sessions) has sent a wave of bagpiping bombers to unleash their payload over the 5th dimensional storage tanks holding the captured time, and reality is about to be destroyed.

The Professor and his rag-tag crew – test pilot Brian Nylon (Ryan Sampson), clockwork-emotioned Dr Gemini Janussen (Cassie Layton), caddish Martian hostage Guuuurk (Kevin Eldon) and Quanderhorn’s part-insectoid son Troy (Freddie Fox), along with factotum Jenkins (John Sessions. Again) – escape by scattering themselves through time.

Troy and Guuuurk find themselves in a cave in the Pleistocene Era, with some rather unnerving co-habitants.

Brian and the Professor have an unexpected Latin lesson, resulting in Brian being given as a gift to a beautiful Roman noblewoman. He’s rather worried to discover what’s supposed to happen next.

Dr Janussen and Sergeant “Jenkins” Jenkins are spirited to the mid-seventeenth century, where they encounter a strangely familiar-looking Witchfinder General.

3: Third Time's A Charm

Broadcaster Steve Penk digs out some of the funniest clips of live radio mistakes and provides listeners with exclusive access to his own collection of audio material from around the world.

Radio bloopers have been around for as long as radio itself. They’re mainly endearing and add a humanising element to the radio and to the presenters on it. A blooper is defined as an embarrassing public blunder, but as long as it's someone else's mistake, most of us are quite capable of getting past the embarrassment to enjoy the humour. The immediacy of live-to-air radio is part of its strength, but also very exposing. If there's a slip of the tongue, it's broadcast into the ether moments later, especially in the early days of broadcast radio when almost everything was done live on the air. There have been some celebrated 'bloopers' over the years - from 'colourful' language, to laughing fits, technical glitches to amusing mispronunciations.

Includes Emily Buchanan introducing a blooper reel from ‘A World In Your Ear’.

Producer: Stephen Garner

WED 22:30 Tim Key's Suspended Sentence (b0128pyh)
Truths universally acknowledged. Clocks striking thirteen. Bests and worsts of times. A truly great opening line can make a novel iconic. But what makes these famous first sentences sing to us?

Last year, Perrier award-winning comedian and poet Tim Key chased down the meaning of Nikolai Gogol's enigmatic short story "The Overcoat", in a feature that garnered some of the most prestigious awards in European radio - winning the EBU's Ake Blomstrom Prize, and being nominated for the Prix Italia and Prix Marulic.

Now, another chance to hear his first radio 'documentary' (sort of), originally aired in 2011, as he tries to sleuth out what makes a great literary opening line, with the help of author Joe Dunthorne, comedian and novelist Mark Watson, and literary critics Maureen Freely and John Sutherland. You see, Tim's just desperate to write his first novel - it's in him, just waiting, waiting to be unleashed. If only he could think of a good beginning...

Fresh from his acclaimed stage show "Masterslut" and regular spots on Charlie Brooker's "Newswipe" and Steve Coogan's "Mid-Morning Matters With Alan Partridge", Tim's on a mission to pen the ultimate opening line: one that will knock your socks off, hook you in, blow you away (he'll sort out the rest later, yeah?).

As he slowly crafts his one-sentence magnum opus, Tim taps into the minds of some of Britain's top literary talents to find out what a first line should and shouldn't do, and the hours of sweat and toil enshrined in those crucial few words. He also tries to galvanise his imagination - taking a spin of one of the world's strangest literary board games...

The pressure's on, as we hear a roll-call of some of the finest and most famous first lines in publishing history - from Dickens to Dostoevsky to uh, Dan Brown. Overwhelmed with information, we also hear a crash course on what not to do - as Tim visits Knebworth House, ancestral pile of a man whose most famous first sentence is legendary for all the wrong reasons: Edward Bulwer-Lytton, author of the infamous "It was a dark and stormy night..."

Finally it's time to try out Tim's sentence of the unsuspecting public, as he visits the award-winning Brick Lane Book Club for a focus group...before in the final moments, he unleashes that killer first sentence on the world...(so then Tim: what comes next?).

WED 23:00 A Normal... (b08ktnwk)
Life

Part two in an occasional series in which Henry Normal uses poetry, storytelling and comedy to explore life's big questions.

Last year Henry brought us his acclaimed show - 'A Normal Family', which centred around his son, Johnny, who was diagnosed with "mildly severe" autism. In this profound, funny and moving show, Henry explored what this meant for his family.

This time Henry brings us his new show, 'A Normal Life'. Drawing on his experiences bringing up a child with autism, Henry investigates where edges are, and how we are connected. As well as his trademark humour, the show tackles the subjects of life, death, loneliness, loss, human frailty and other classic conversation stoppers.

Henry Normal is a multi-award winning writer, producer and poet. Co-writer of award winning TV programmes such as The Royle Family, The Mrs Merton Show, Coogan's Run and Paul Calf, and producer of, amongst many others, Oscar-Nominated Philomena, Gavin and Stacey and Alan Partridge.

He has published several volumes of poetry, including The Dream Ticket, Nude Modelling for the Afterlife and Staring Directly at the Eclipse. His last Radio 4 series was 1997's Encyclopaedia Poetica.

Written and performed by - Henry Normal
Producer - Carl Cooper
Production Coordinator - Steve Lanham
This is a BBC Studios Production.

Series 1

Episode 1

Sheila Hancock heads a stunning cast including Mackenzie Crook, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Montagu and Kevin Eldon. This is a clever, funny and touching series about a small town in the middle of Northamptonshire as it prepares for a talent night. It is written by and also stars Katherine Jakeways.

Each week we catch up with Rod the local supermarket manager (Mackenzie Crook) who shares rather more than is usual about his private life over the store's tannoy system.

We get to know recently divorced Jan (Felicity Montagu) who's been trying unsuccessfully to 'find herself' with a trip abroad to an elephant sanctuary. But it is at home in Wadenbrook that she starts to feel happier with herself as her friendship blossoms with ex-teacher Mary (Penelope Wilton). And, joy of joys, could it be that Jan is going to experience a touch of romance at last?

We are introduced to driving instructor and forthright self-defence teacher Esther (Katherine Jakeways) and her gentle and put-upon Jonathan (Kevin Eldon) as they struggle to start a family and we meet possibly the only happy couple in town, Ken and Keith, as they attempt to teach their pet whippets to dance for the town talent night.

Written by Katherine Jakeways
Produced by Claire Jones

In this week's episode Mary starts rehearsals for the town talent night and is shocked by 12 year old Gregory's slide show of Victorian ladies. Meanwhile Esther sends her husband Jonathan out to collect money for the Leicestershire Infertile Males Project but he ends up at The Bricklayer's Arms looking at pictures of elephants with Jan.

Andrew Adonis on Joseph Bazalgette

Matthew Parris hears from Labour peer Lord Adonis why Joseph Bazalgette, the Victorian engineer, has his nomination as a Great Life.
Bazalgette, the grandson of a French immigrant who made a fortune lending money to the Hanoverian royal family, is one of the most important of the great Victorian engineers. He not only built a sewage system for London which wiped out cholera in the city, he also built the famous Embankments, laid out several of the main thoroughfares and built or improved many of the city's landmark bridges. Yet he is far less well-known than his flamboyant contemporary Brunel and less celebrated than the creators of the railways. With the help of Joseph Bazalgette's great-great-grandson Sir Peter Bazalgette, the man responsible for Ready Steady Cook and Big Brother and now Chairman of the Arts Council, Matthew pieces together the story of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, "The Sewer King."

A comic satire set in the struggling world of newspapers. Freddy punctures Maddox's literary pretensions and uncovers a scandal.

Maddox ..... John Sessions
Oliver ..... Alex Jennings
Freddy ..... Stephen Wight
Carol ..... Polly Frame
Masha ..... Debbie Chazen
Miles Deanbrook ..... Sean Baker
Waiter ..... Adeel Akhtar
Producer ..... Sally Avens

Alistair Beaton and Tom Mitchelson's satire is set in the world of modern newspapers.

A group of dysfunctional journalists attempt to cover major news stories at the same time as grappling with the demands of working in a multi-platform environment, watching circulation figures plummet and the recession causing half the workforce to be laid off.

At the heart of the comedy is the relationship between Maddox Bradley, a journalist who mourns the day of proper investigative journalism, and Freddy, the online editor who will regurgitate a press release quite happily and call it a story. But they have a grudging respect for the each other as Freddy helps Maddox stay afloat in the world of Twitter, Facebook and podcasting and Maddox shows Freddy how to sniff out the real story. Both are at the mercy of Oliver, the pragmatic editor more concerned with keeping his job, and Carol, the news editor who believes that circulation will increase if they run pieces on Big Mac eating orang-utans and 'intelligent' skunks rather than Maddox's moral crusading diatribes. And only Masha, the Russian head of online communities, who wants to give away all their content because that is true democracy, knows Freddy's secret; that he's a posh boy from Eton rather than a hypercool kid from the street; well that's what Freddy thinks anyway.

FRI 09:00 The 3rd Degree (m0007bk0)
Series 9

University of Plymouth

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from the University of Plymouth with specialist subjects including History, Geology and Human Biosciences and questions ranging from deadly jellyfish to glowing jellyfish via Jack Straw, Krishna and Planck’s Constant.

Other Universities featured in this series include Royal Holloway University of London, Aberdeen, St Catharine’s College Cambridge, Brighton and Oxford Brookes.

Produced by David Tyler
