SAT 01:30 The Concrete and the Divine (b01rqnf3)
Under the umbrella of Glasgow architects Gillespie Kidd & Coia, Isi Metzstein and Andrew MacMillan seized on the momentary experimentalism of the Catholic Church after World War II to revolutionise church design.

This was a brave new world and the Catholic Church wanted their places of worship to meet the needs of a new era.

In a culture never quite comfortable with the high modern influences of Europe and America, Metzstein and MacMillan drew on the ideas of Le Corbusier and Frank Lloyd Wright with unparalleled freedom.

Their masterpiece was St Peter's Seminary at Cardross, which stood out like a spaceship in the modest construction yards of British architecture. It's a ghost space now, abandoned in 1980 just 14 years after completion.

While most of their churches are still in use, their Modernist design and location means they stand like monuments to a very different time; a time when Catholicism in Scotland was expected to spread its wings.

Jonathan Glancey explores Scotland's physical and spiritual landscape to discover more about the extraordinary lives of two of Britain's most talented architects.

Producer: Caitlin Smith

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in April 2013.

The Puzzle Women

How Stasi Lieutenant-Colonel Gunter Bohnsack was ostracised after the Berlin Wall came down.

Real-life stories of both the East Germans who resisted the state and those who worked for the apparatus that spied on them. Once the Berlin Wall came down in November 1989, those who worked for the Stasi had to come to terms – or not – with their pasts.

While working in Berlin, Australian Anna Funder became curious about the stories of those who'd lived under the watchful eye of the Stasi, and of the stories of the Stasi men themselves.

In a series of meetings, she pieces together what life was like then and how they are coping with the aftermath.

Concluded by Anna Chancellor.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2003.

SAT 02:15 Natural History Heroes (b06d9pb3)
Alice Eastwood

Alice Eastwood was a self-taught botanist using her holidays to collect and identify plants in Colorado who went on to become the curator of the California Academy of Science botany collection.

Over her career Eastwood discovered many of the plants on California's coastline and during the fire that followed the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco Eastwood rescued 1,497 important specimens from the museum – only made possible because she had taken the fortunate step of segregating it in the first place.

The rest of the collection was destroyed and Eastwood devoted the rest of her life to rebuilding it. When she retired the collection contained over 300,000 specimens, over three times as many as were destroyed in 1906.

Sandy Knapp explains why Alice Eastwood is her Natural History Hero.

First heard on BBC Radio 4 in October 2015.

SAT 05:30 The Joy of Text (m0009zmg)
Debra Humphries and Gary Slaymaker had been nodding acquaintances for a number of years but, in March 2017, Debra used Facebook’s Messenger app to ask Gary if he had any stand-up gigs arranged in Cardiff. This innocent little enquiry started a conversation, which developed over the next few weeks into late night chats.

It became clear they had a lot in common and shared a sense of humour.

They met for a drink, and then an official first date and, following that, spent the entire week in each other’s company (and beds). Shortly afterwards, they changed their social media profiles to “In a relationship with…”

Things couldn’t have been any better for the pair - until Debra’s 17-year-old son, Brychan, became ill. He was diagnosed with stage four cancer and underwent an operation. Despite the very best efforts of the staff at Cardiff’s Heath Hospital, Brychan died just two weeks after falling ill.

Since that day, it’s been a matter of coping with the loss for Debra, with Gary doing his best to be a shoulder for her to lean on.

The Joy of Text distils that year, through the messages and texts they sent each other from day one. It's sometimes raw, sometimes sweet, but often shot through with the quirky humour that made them fall in love with each other in the first place.

Debra and Gary are an unlikely romantic pairing. She’s beautiful, quiet, and thoughtful - he’s not. They have seen pretty much the best and worst that life has had to offer throughout their first year together.

Despite the ups and downs, the laughs keep on coming in this poignant and funny (honestly!) programme.

A Slaycorp production for BBC Radio 4

SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b04pr1w2)
Art School, Smart School

Brian Eno, Grayson Perry and others reflect on the state of the art school.

British art schools have produced some of the world's most successful artists, designers, filmmakers and musicians. Britain has built up a strong reputation for creativity around the world and politicians are interested in capitalising on our creative brand.

Brian Eno was at art school at a particularly exciting time. In the sixties, art colleges were independent and experimental; students were challenged to rethink what art and art education were about. Brian relates his memories of Ipswich College of Art under the radical educationalist Roy Ascot, and reflects on the importance of this experience. But he also sounds a warning note - he says art schools are under huge pressures and the effects are threatening creativity.

This programme brings together artists, musicians, art tutors and archive recordings to explore the last half century of art education and the state of Britain's art schools today.

We hear the perspectives of high profile figures in art and design - Grayson Perry, Richard Wentworth, Eileen Cooper, Peter Kindersley, and Jay Osgerby to name a few.

Britain depends on its art schools if it's to sustain its reputation for creativity. But are art schools becoming too much like universities and excluding those very people who will produce the innovations of the future?

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. SUN 15:45 His Master's Voices (b06r3q5t)
The Theatre/EMI Archive

Singer Cerys Matthews and music expert Tristram Penna continue their investigation into the very earliest days of the recording industry in the UK.

Tristram with Christopher Proudfoot, CLPGS chairman, visits the EMI Archive Trust in Hayes, which houses Fred Gaisberg's own collection of over 14,000 7 inch discs dating from 1898 as well as an amazing collection of early gramophones.

Cerys and Tristram visit Wyndham's Theatre in London's West End where they meet actor Kenneth Cranham. Charles Wyndham was a famous actor/impresario who built this theatre in 1899 and a disc of Wyndham's voice reciting a poem recorded in December 1898 is played on the stage - probably the first time his voice has been heard there for over 100 years. This disc has not been previously broadcast.

As an actor himself, Wyndham had this theatre built to his own specifications so the acoustics are incredibly good - and even today actors require no amplification.

The recording process of the Gramophone Company back in 1898 had certain technological limitations and so they needed the right voices to put on disc, and famous actors of the day were an obvious choice. The people with Gramophones in their own home would be incredibly proud to have the latest speech from actors like Charles Wyndham to impress their peers. For those less fortunate who couldn't afford a Gramophone in their own home, there were Gramophone evenings in theatres across the country where they could go along and pay a shilling or so and hear the latest speeches.

It was also at this point the Victorians realised that recording famous people of the day would be good for their future legacy. The early recordings are courtesy of the EMI Archive Trust.

A Sue Clark production for BBC Radio 4.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 2015.

SUN 22:00 Sean's Last Show (m000b74h)
Broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra on what would have been his 54th birthday, this is the final stand-up show performed by the award-winning comedian and writer Sean Hughes.

London-born Sean was Ireland’s first ever stand-up star and for a time one of the most popular comics in the world. He emerged with the explosion of new late night comedy TV, stand-up shows in an era where comedy was the new rock’n’roll. He hung around with rock stars and they flocked to his shows. U2’s Bono booked a private box for one sold-out show at Dublin’s Olympia Theatre. Sean was invited to MC a Greenpeace benefit show in Manchester where he ignored the after-show party to have a drink with local music heroes Inspiral Carpets and their roadie Noel Gallagher.

Sean’s star had a rapid rise and he was the youngest winner of the Perrier Award. As writer and star of Sean’s Show (Ch4) he was always the buccaneer and enjoyed success across all facets of the business. He wrote books, starred in films, West End stage plays and in major primetime TV successes. His mainstream success was cemented by BBC1’s panel show Never Mind The Buzzcocks where he was team captain for over 10 years.

Sean Hughes passed away on October 16th 2017 aged 51 in Whittington Hospital, London after a short illness. To many of today’s comedy stars he was a trailblazer. Jack Dee, Jason Byrne, Bob Mortimer, Ardal O’Hanlon, Vic Reeves and many more attended his funeral.

In February 2016 Sean performed a special ‘best of’ live at The Project Arts Centre in Dublin for RTE Radio 1. Poignantly, he ends the show reading a poem he wrote thirteen years previously about his own death.

Produced by Eoin Sweeney.

First broadcast on RTE Radio 1 in Feb 2016.

MON 06:30 Fort Dunlop (b00qpmgh)
Giles Poyner, who works in Brand Design at the iconic Fort Dunlop building, pays tribute to the Birmingham landmark. He, his mother and grandfather talk about their working lives there.

Drive through Birmingham on the M6 and you can't fail to notice an imposing fort-like building, standing proud against the city's industrial skyline. The Fort Dunlop building was built for the tyre company in the early 20th century to accommodate the thousands of workers needed to supply the growing motoring and aviation industries. The Dunlop Tyre Company, was one of Birmingham's largest employers, and those who worked there were looked after and had a job for life. But by the end of the century, competition from overseas led to the closure of the site, as Dunlop transferred much of its operation abroad.

The Fort was abandoned in the late 1980s and stood empty for 20 years, until it was taken over by an innovative urban design company who transformed the vast empty tyre store into state of the art offices, cafes and shops.

This is where Giles Poyner works as brand design manager. The achingly hip surroundings of his office are a far cry from his 92-year-old grandfather's experience of working at the Fort. He recalls the stench of rubber in the air, the workers arriving by canal boat before the road was built and, above all, the sense of being part of a family, cared for by a benevolent employer.

Giles's mother Susan also worked at Fort Dunlop as a typist during the 1960s. She remembers the generous facilities provided for the workers, including a pub, theatre and playing fields.

Giles Poyner pays tribute to this iconic Birmingham landmark and discovers how his workplace has changed both physically and culturally over the decades.

Elizabeth and Her German Garden

Episode 1

Best known for The Enchanted April, Elizabeth von Arnim's first novel, the semi-autobiographical Elizabeth and her German Garden, was published anonymously in 1898. In it she mines her unhappy marriage to an overbearing Count – the 'Man of Wrath' – and the mores of the German landed gentry. Subversive, witty and a beautiful meditation on the joys of gardening, it was a huge bestseller and firmly established von Arnim's reputation as an author.

Written as a series of diary entries, Elizabeth is a wild spirit whose minor eccentricities (she is happiest when eating salad outdoors) bemuse the servants and shock the high-born neighbours of her husband's family estate in northern Germany. Rather than hating its remoteness and dilapidation, Elizabeth sees her sojourn there as an opportunity to create a beautiful garden in which she can spend time thinking about the world, playing with her beloved daughters and tolerating the occasional visitor.

Nopcsa described the first fossil evidence that the Sauropods had gone through a process of island dwarfism – shrinking body size over generations to adapt to living on islands.

Nopcsa was a flamboyant character and was unafraid to make his more wacky and outlandish theories public and was also one of very few openly gay men in the early part of the 20th century.

Episode 4

Bridget Christie returns in another series of her multi-award winning series about modern feminism.

Bridget thought that she'd be able to put her feet up after her last Radio 4 series, she expected it to bomb. Sadly it was a huge success and she's had to bang on about feminism ever since, perform two sell-out runs at the Edinburgh festival and win lots of awards.

But she hasn't managed to single-handedly eradicate sexism so she's made a whole new four-part series about it for Radio 4.

In this final episode, she talks about why she's not grateful Russell Brand has stopped being a sexist, what happens when you wear an end FGM badge on a popular TV show and why politics has a women problem.

She's assisted in this by the series' token man, Fred MacAulay.

The series is written and performed by Bridget Christie and the producers are Alexandra Smith and Alison Vernon Smith.

TUE 06:00 Destination - Fire! (m000b7jm)
Series 1

The Reluctant Fire-Raiser

Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if a recent incident had a political motivation? Stars Robert Beatty.

A 1962 drama series set off the well-beaten detection track. It's writer Philip Levene talked about his inspiration: "I have always been fascinated by fire......while writing two plays [Untimely Death, Weather For Murder] I was struck by the wide variety of intriguing ideas in a field that seemed (bar the obvious insurance fraud) comparatively untouched to date. Personally I have had my fill of court-room dramas, endless bodies and Private Eyes, but the puzzle of the charred remains of a burnt-out building intrigue me. The motivations of arson are numerous: greed, financial reverses destruction of evidence, revenge".

It stars noted Canadian radio, television and screen actor, Robert Beatty (1909 - 1992). Beatty shared the screen with James Mason in Odd Man Out (1947), Gregory Peck in Horatio Hornblower (1951) and Richard Burton in Where Eagles Dare (1968), as well as playing the Lester Powell's Irish private detective, Philip Odell on the BBC Light Programme from 1947 to 1961.

TUE 06:30 House Beautiful (b00zm1l1)
Laurence Llewelyn Bowen considers the effect of the Aesthetic movement on the home in Britain.

Many artists and craftsmen were repelled by the ugly mass produced goods on show at the 1851 Exhibition. A reactive movement started that made BEAUTY the focus and ambition, not only of art but of all things including household goods and furnishings.

Laurence starts at Leighton House in London, the opulent studio-home of the painter Frederic Lord Leighton, which was open for the public to admire and emulate. Rossetti, Whistler and Wilde also had houses which became hugely fashionable for their muted colour, their harmonious furnishings and their refined collection of art and objects, many from Japan and the Middle East.

Laurence traces the style to the very heart of middle class suburbia where all things 'artistic' became an obsession.

And we hear how much we owe to that movement today - how our glassy home magazines are descendants of the Victorian 'home hints', how the tiles and wallpapers we choose, the idea of lifestyle' and of 'good taste' can be attributed to what happened during the 1870s.

The Diamond Ring

The Missing Hancocks recreates those episodes of the classic Hancock's Half Hour that have been wiped or lost from the archive.

The first modern sitcom, Hancock's Half Hour made stars of Tony Hancock, Sid James and Kenneth Williams, and launched Ray Galton and Alan Simpson as one of the most successful comedy-writing partnerships in history. But 20 episodes of the show were missing from the BBC archives. Now, after four highly successful series, the final batch of those episodes have been lovingly re-recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC Radio Theatre.

Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, and with the classic score re-recorded by the BBC Concert Orchestra, the show stars Kevin McNally, Kevin Eldon, Simon Greenall, Robin Sebastian and Margaret Cabourn-Smith. The Diamond Ring was first broadcast on 9th November 1954.

Patrick Gale

Telling Tales heads to Penzance to meet Patrick Gale, the self-titled “last novelist in England” who writes heartfelt novels on his farm near Land’s End.

Since publishing two books on the very same day, at the age of 22, Patrick has authored 16 novels and released several collections of short stories.

In a lot of his writing, Patrick draws on personal experience and family history, imagining alternative adventures, backstories, and brand new tales that capture the complexities of relationships.

For listeners not yet familiar with Patrick’s work, we revisit a short story originally written for a BBC series titled Father Figures. Gentleman’s Relish first broadcast in 2003 and is read by Robert Bathurst.

Patrick discusses the cello lessons which provided fertile ground for his most recent novel, Take Nothing With You, a coming-of-age tale which celebrates the transformative power of music.

We also look at Patrick’s screenwriting, which began with the Emmy Award-winning Man In The Orange Shirt, a two part drama for the BBC’s Gay Britannia Season.

Patrick is currently working on a screen adaptation of A Place Called Winter, his 2015 novel which was sparked by an intriguing family mystery.

This interview was recorded in The Edge Of The World, on Bookshop Day, Saturday 5th October.

Elizabeth and Her German Garden

Episode 2

Elizabeth von Arnim's semi-autobiographical first novel - first published in 1898 and written as a series of diary entries - details the joys and frustrations of creating a garden on her husband's family estate in northern Germany.

Elizabeth is a wild spirit whose minor eccentricities (she is happiest when eating salad outdoors) bemuse the servants and shock her high-born neighbours. Rather than hating the estate's remoteness and dilapidation, Elizabeth sees her sojourn there as an opportunity to create a beautiful garden in which she can spend time thinking about the world, playing with her beloved daughters and tolerating the occasional visitor.

Chance in a Million

Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if a recent incident was an accident or arson?

Series 1

Smoke Screen

Can fire investigator Quentin Barnaby determine if a cinema blaze was an accident or arson?

THU 06:30 Hersch on Herschel (b036k5sh)
William Herschel was a German-born British composer and astronomer who discovered Uranus, observed Saturn's rings and discovered the existence of infrared radiation. In his spare time he composed 24 symphonies.

Rainer Hersch is a British-born German comedian and musician who is equally at home closing the show at the famous Comedy Store or conducting the Philharmonia at the Festival Hall. In his spare time he is a keen amateur astronomer with a telescope in his back garden - like Herschel. For 25 years, he has been an active member of his local astronomy society.

Now Hersch wants to know more about his namesake and why he is not better known. It's a good time to do it - in April 2013, the mission of the Herschel Space Observatory, named after William Herschel, came to an end. It was the biggest Infra-Red satellite ever launched and had been observing the Universe in the IR band - but it finally ran out of coolant.

Rainer's journey begins in the garden of the Bath house where, in 1781 William Herschel became the first human to discover a new planet, Uranus, or Georgium Sidus (George's Star) as Herschel insisted on naming it to gain patronage from George III. He finds out how Herschel constructed the most powerful telescopes then in existence and how this led him also to predict the shape of the Milky Way. Herschel also discovered Infra-Red radiation. And, despite his erroneous predictions about life on the moon and the sun, he went from being an obscure German immigrant military musician and amateur astronomer to one of the most celebrated British scientists of the day.

Elsewhere in the building is schoolteacher Ellie (Abigail Cruttenden) who is shy, nervous and holds a secret candle for Mitch. In this fourth episode, Front Window, the neighbours become obsessed with various goings-on at the front of the house. FRI 06:30 The Foghorn: A Celebration (b00yqp5z)
Peter Curran celebrates the humble foghorn's powerful role in music, literature and film.

The foghorn was invented in 1855 by Robert Foulis, a Scotsman living in Canada who heard the low notes (but not the high notes) of his daughter's piano playing whist walking far from the family's fog-shrouded coastal cottage, thus inspiring the first steam powered fog horn. But beyond the sea, it's 'whale-like' sound has inspired artists, writers and musicians to use the foghorn both as symbol and instrument.

Peter Curran hears from foghorn composer of 'Maritime Rites' Alvin Curran, Jason Gorski, aka The Fogmaster, who used to conduct guerrilla foghorn concerts in the Bay Area of California, and takes a tour of Portland Bill lighthouse in Dorset, with keeper Larry Walker, taking the opportunity to set off an almighty Victorian foghorn. He also joins James Bond film music and future 2012 Olympic theme music composer David Arnold, who tries to digitally recreate the foghorn's cry, and Dr Harry Witchel, who analyses Peter's yearn for the sound as a child.

The central character, Elizabeth, is a wild spirit whose minor eccentricities bemuse the servants and shock the high-born neighbours of her husband's family estate in northern Germany. Rather than hating its remoteness and dilapidation, Elizabeth sees her sojourn there as an opportunity to create a beautiful garden in which she can spend time thinking about the world, playing with her beloved daughters and tolerating the occasional visitor.

The development of the microscope unlocked the tiny and enchanting world of microorganisms. Antony van Leeuwenhoek, a draper with an interest in the natural world spent 50 years making his own lenses and developing unique techniques to light and view his subjects. Leeuwenhoek’s descriptions of the movements and appearance of the organisms he observed, some of which he scraped from his teeth, are remarkably accurate given that the single lens he viewed them through was tiny itself – only 1mm in diameter.

He was the first person to see a red blood corpuscle, bacteria and sperm. His observations led to the conclusion that fertilisation occurred at the point that an individual sperm cell penetrates the egg. With lenses that were almost microscopic in size themselves Leeuwenhoek opened up a miniature world captivating and disturbing the public in equal measure.

Scientist Andrew Parker explains why the father of microbiology is his Natural History Hero.

Series 2

Episode 2

Isy recounts the tale of Rosa and Matthew, a hypnotherapist and an osteopath who work a few doors apart and find it difficult to express their feelings for each other.

Isy Suttie's Sony Award winning show, recounting a series of love stories affecting people she's known throughout her life, told partly through song.

Sometimes Isy has merely observed other people's love lives; quite often she's intervened, changing the action dramatically - for better or worse. Intertwined within these stories are related real life anecdotes from Isy's own, often disastrous, love life.

With her multi-character and vocal skills, and accompanied by her guitar, Isy creates a hilarious and deeply moving world, sharing with us her lessons in life and love.

"A voice you want to swim in" The Independent

Producer: Lyndsay Fenner.
