"The event that changed all of their lives happened on a Saturday afternoon in June, just minutes after Michael Turner - thinking the Nelsons' house was empty - stepped through their back door."

After the sudden loss of his wife, writer Michael Turner moves to London and develops a close friendship with the Nelsons, who live next door - Josh, Samantha and their two young daughters Lucy and Rachel. The family seem to represent everything Michael fears he may now never have: intimacy, children, stability and a family home. The new friendship at first seems to offer the prospect of healing, but then a catastrophic event changes everything.

Owen Sheers' compelling story of the search for truth, the burden of secrets and the desire for redemption. It explores how our lives are interconnected, even in today's increasingly depersonalised, globalised world.

SAT 09:00 Great Lives - 400 and Counting (b09hw6j5)
From Leon Trotsky to Morecambe and Wise - Matthew Parris on the rows, revelations and rank incompetence behind 400 editions of Great Lives.

Deep in the summer of 2001, a new programme tiptoed out onto Radio 4. The concept was simple – book someone famous to talk about someone dead. Except there was a problem; famous people don’t talk much about someone else. In a world of the celebrity plug, getting voices to commit to a radio programme where they couldn’t talk about themselves was proving tough. Twelve slots to fill, and nobody signed up.

400 episodes later …. Barbara Castle, Beryl Bainbridge, Bernard Manning, eventually everyone says yes. David Attenborough chose a man who first drew a flea, George Osborne the king who taxed the non-doms. Then there was Christopher Hitchens, so incensed by the presenter that he walked out. “You’re a bleeding Tory,” he said, “and always have been. Have you done? I have to be somewhere at one.”

Matthew Parris and original series producer Miles Warde go behind the scenes to find out how Great Lives was born. Featuring material never previously played - nominators and experts about their hopes and fears; archive of original presenters Joan Bakewell and Humphrey Carpenter; plus a special selection of the very best of Great Lives.

“There’s a joy in judging people by their choice of hero. It’s one reason Matthew Parris’s Great Lives series has run for 40 series.” Ben Preston, Radio Times editor, 2016.

Programme extracts also to include: Penelope Keith on Morecambe and Wise; Michael Sheen on Philip K Dick; Grace Dent on Nancy Mitford; Brian Sewell on Mad King Ludwig of Bavaria; Maureen Lipmann on Cicely Saunders.

Produced at BBC Bristol by Miles Warde.

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra and first broadcast in December 2017.

Success

Written and performed by Mark Watson, Tim Key and Tom Basden as they tackle academic and abstract topics.

In this episode, Mark looks at "Success". Everyone wants to be successful, just as everyone wants to be loved, or have a big flashy car. But how do we actually measure success? Is it measured by how many things we have, how many swimming certificates are on our walls, whether or not we are Lionel Richie? Some people appear to be doing well in the world but are miserable. Other people don't have money, a good job or anything - but are happy.

Is that, in fact, the true definition of success - to find contentment with whatever life brings you?

Mark, Tim and Tom draw on modern definitions of success, and decide which ones are worthwhile. They look at successful people and those who have made a dog's dinner of life, to draw what conclusions they can.

Mark Watson is a multi-award winning comedian - his awards include the inaugural if.comeddies Panel Prize 2006. He is assisted by Tim Key, winner of an Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2009, and Tom Basden who won the the if.comedy award for Best Newcomer in 2007.

The memoir of Edna Adan Ismail, a remarkable daughter, midwife and First Lady.

As the eldest child of an overworked doctor in 1950s Somaliland, Edna saw first-hand how poor healthcare, lack of education and ancient superstitions had devastating effects on the country’s people, especially women. When she suffered the trauma of FGM as an 8 year-old girl, Edna’s determination was born.

She became a nurse and midwife, a formidable teacher and a campaigner for women’s health. As her country was swept up in its bloody fight for independence, Edna also rose to become its First Lady and first female cabinet minister. But mixing with Presidents and Princes, she never forgot her roots and continued to train midwives – a role she has to this day.

In time, she built her own hospital, brick by brick, in the face of many obstacles - to ensure the training of future generations. The indomitable 82 year-old Edna still delivers babies. After all - as she puts it - she is "simply a midwife".

Fi Glover introduces a conversation between friends who connected on DK Target's Noticeboard and discovered they share a belief that education can squash creativity. Another in the series that proves it's surprising what you hear when you listen.

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. She soon discovers that the streets are not a woman's territory. Confined in her flat, she finds her sense of self-beginning to dissolve. She hears footsteps, sounds of distress from the supposedly empty flat above. She has only constantly changing rumours to hang on to, and no one with whom to share her creeping unease.

MON 06:30 How Dolly Got Rotherham Reading (b012ql5c)
Dolly Parton grew up in poverty in rural East Tennessee, where children only attended school if there was no work to be done on the farm. She came to regard good literacy skills as one of the key passports to enhanced life chances and in 1995 she launched the 'Imagination Library'.

The idea was quite simple. All children in the area were sent one book a month from birth until five years. In 2007 she took South Yorkshire by surprise when she turned up in Rotherham - not a city used to celebrity visits. But what happened next? Did her library capture the imagination of Rotherham's children? We follow up to ask whether it was just a flash in the pan or a serious project.

Travelling to Dollywood for an Imagination Library conference, Sarfraz Manzoor meets people from all over the world who have signed up for the literacy project. From Alaskan children in remote communities to young readers in Nottingham, Sarfraz finds that Dolly's influence is global.

Sarfraz will meet Dolly Parton in Dollywood to talk about her life and work. We'll hear from those who knew her as a child and understand the motivations for this charitable work she undertakes with such passion.

It will be a journey to the glamourous heart of country music, but one which reveals much more about one of the world's best loved country singers. Dolly Parton in her own words and in her own personal world of the Imagination Library.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2011.

Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime

Secrets From The Dead

Bestselling crime author Val McDermid has long been fascinated with forensic science. Now she delves into the medical archives to discover the secrets of this incredible field.

The dead talk. To the right listener, they tell us all about themselves: where they came from, who they are, how they lived, how they died - and who killed them. Through forensic medicine, a corpse, the scene of a crime or a single hair can reveal the secrets that hold the truth and allow justice to be done. But how much do we really understand about forensics? What is it like to be a SCO (Scene of Crime Operative)? Attend an autopsy? Where did it come from? How reliable are its proofs?

Val McDermid - author of The Wire in the Blood and The Vanishing Point - delves into medical archives including interviews with scientists to answer these questions, exploring as far back as the murder of Julius Caesar and early recorded forensic science in thirteenth century China as well as famous modern cases.

TUE 06:30 Cornershop (b01pw38v)
In the early 1990s, the Anglo-Indian band, Cornershop, had had a couple of decent singles, but as a group they were rather ramshackle. Then in 1997, with the release of their album, When I was Born for the Seventh Time, they re-emerged with a different and refreshing sound.

Their British Asian fusion was raucously experimental; their attitude was spiky, smart and often hilarious. They'd created a masterpiece of cross cultural music which gave them a worldwide hit, Brimful of Asha.

The release prompted an excited music press to hail the album as a breakthrough in the integration of white and Asian music, and to predict an explosion in multi-cultural rock.

Musician Talvin Singh, and Rolling Stone music critic David Fricke join band members Ben Ayres and Tjinder Singh to explore how the album was made, the impact it had at the time, and whether its promise of musical integration has endured.

TUE 07:30 Andy Hamilton Sort of Remembers (m0007bd8)
Series 2

Religion

Radio 4 favourite Andy Hamilton presents a collection of observations and reminiscences from his personal life and 40-plus years working in comedy.

Over this four-part series, Andy will be sort of remembering tales about Sport, Class, Religion and Stupidity. Through comic observations and personal anecdotes, he will explore each theme, examining how much (or how little) things have changed in the 60ish years he's been on this planet.

This week, Andy considers Religion. From his early experiences as a choirboy through to his confirmation as a Church of England atheist. He shares fond memories of playing Satan in Radio 4’s long running sit com ‘Old Harry’s Game’. Andy also muses on the enduring popularity of religion. And which deity might be best at sport.

Andy was born in Fulham in 1954, read English at Cambridge and then in 1976 began writing comedy for BBC Radio, on programmes like Week Ending and The News Huddlines. In 1990, he and Guy Jenkin created Drop the Dead Donkey for Channel 4. Andy has spent much of his working life making acute observations about politics and family life. In 2007, again with Guy Jenkin, he created the massive TV hit Outnumbered, which celebrated the chaos of life with young children. More recently they created the highly topical Ballot Monkeys and Power Monkeys for Channel 4, which charted the absurdities of the General Election and then the EU Referendum. For over 20 years he has been playing the part of Satan in his Radio 4 sitcom, Old Harry's Game. Andy is also a popular panellist on shows such as The News Quiz and Have I Got News For You.

Episode 4

Sketch troupe So On and So Forth - featuring John Sherman, Nick Gadd and Martin Allanson - have performed together for the last five years, refining their particularly British style of sketch comedy. They have recently recruited top comedy actress Alison Thea-Skot to bring some class the proceedings.

So On and So Forth is a sketch group with a very clear, slightly nihilistic perspective on the world - everything is funny if you look at it the wrong way.

In 2011 they headed to the Edinburgh Fringe where they performed several shows a day, picked up rave reviews and developed webbed feet. With a growing reputation in the live arena they started filming sketches whenever possible hoping to revel in the untold riches of YouTube. Later that year they won the Cofilmic award for Best Sketch, and one of their online sketches featured on Comedy Central's hit US show Tosh.0 as Video of the Week which helped to ratchet up just shy of a quarter of a million hits on their YouTube page.

Later in 2012 they were commissioned by BBC Worldwide to produce yet more sparkly new web sketches. In 2013 the team featured on Radio 4's very own show Sketchorama and, following those stand out performances and their online work, they have been given the opportunity to make their own series.

Sofie Hagen

This week’s guest is a Danish comedian, podcaster and fat activist, who has just published her very first book.

Sofie Hagen’s literary career began early, with hilariously naive fan fiction dedicated to the Irish band Westlife. After sharing some of these tales with audiences in her 2015 Edinburgh Fringe show, Sofie took home the prize for Best Newcomer.

But these stories also helped Sofie deal with depression. A fact she has shared in her stand-up shows and her other work, including the 2019 book Happy Fat.

We hear an extract from Sofie’s book, which is part memoir and part social commentary, with advice and cultural history dotted in between. Of particular interest to Sofie is how fat women are represented fictionally, in books and on screen.

Plus, we delve further into the history of food, and its long-established cultural connection to morality, in her Radio 4 documentary, The Unexpected History Of Clean Eating.

Owen Sheers - I Saw a Man

Episode 7

Major McCullen learns the true outcome of his mission and Michael tries to rewrite the truth of what happened in the Nelsons' house.

Owen Sheers' compelling story of the search for truth, the burden of secrets and the desire for redemption. It explores how our lives are interconnected, even in today's increasingly depersonalised, globalised world.

Good Vibrations

What is the future of radio? In a world of digital overload can the public be expected to just listen to something without any pictures? Is the radio era over? The Institute of Radiophonic Evolution (IRE), based in South Mimms, is working hard to give radio a bright future.

Their secret work is revealed in these programmes which draw on conference calls, voice notes and life-logs, to tell a compelling and strange story of the technological lengths to which the researchers will go to keep radio relevant.

Instead of just adding pictures, the lab is working on ways to transmit smells, vibrations, and 3D images, as well as a way of putting radio into listeners' very brains!

It sounds impossible, but the IRE boffins believe in making the impossible audible. And that's their motto.

Each week a jiffy bag of sound files arrives at BBC Radio 4. We listen to the contents to discover what backroom boffins Luke Mourne and Professor Trish Baldock (ably assisted by Shelley – on work experience) have been up to.

In this week's episode, Luke discovers that certain low frequencies add a whole new dimension to Book At Bedtime.

He finds out what can - and can't be - said on air and on stage, and what really upsets the country's political elite. A portrait of South Africa through its evolving satirical scene, with a democracy only now finding that perhaps it can laugh at itself.
