What was the influence of John Milton senior on his famous poet son? Clarinettist and Cambridge University English literature graduate Emma Johnson sets out to find out.
In one of his early Latin poems John Milton junior wrote, 'Apollo, wishing to disperse himself between the two, gave to me certain gifts, to my father others, and father and son, we possess each one half of the god'.
Emma fills in the other half of that Godly image by exploring the musical gifts of John Milton senior. The musicologist and performer Richard Rastall has unearthed and recorded many of the elder Milton's pieces including choral, viol consort and song settings. He shows what he has discovered and what it sounds like in specially reconstructed recordings of works that even scholars are unfamiliar with.
As well as revealing John Milton the composer, discover the life of the man and his relationship with his son. Although a gifted musician, John Milton was not able to live on the earnings from his compositions alone. A scrivener by trade, he managed to free himself from the Scriveners' Company in 1599 and was subsequently able to afford a private tutor for his son and then provide for him when he took a place at St Paul's School and Christ's College, Cambridge.
Emma also talks to Milton scholars and the early music group Fretwork, as they prepare and record John Milton's instrument works.

Cardamon scented candles, kumquats and a debate over the virtues of shared bathing compared to shared showering occupy Neil and Kim.
Frank Skinner's sharp comedy starring Frank and Katherine Parkinson.
Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint and the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an unmistakable tenderness.
"That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that would be lost in his stand-up routines." Jane Anderson, Radio Times
"Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly precise dissection of a relationship." Daily Mail
Radical comic Mark Steele turns his analytical mind to the guillotine and all things French.

THU 06:30 Klatt's Last Tapes (b03775fy)
Dennis Klatt was an American pioneer of text to speech devices, enabling those without the ability to speak to have a voice. Before Klatt died in 1988, he produced the definitive history of speech synthesis, which included recordings he archived charting the progress of the technology in the 20th century.
Using Klatt's extensive research as her cornerstone, Lucy Hawking explores the history of synthesizing speech over the last 200 years, up to current research, which suggests people are disturbed by hearing artificial speech which is too human.
It was the showman and inventor Wolfgang von Kempelen who built the most celebrated speaking machine, in 1769. At Saarland University, in Germany, they have constructed a replica and Lucy tries her hand at some very basic mechanical speech.
In the 1930s, Homer Dudley produced the first electronic device. By the 1980s, Klatt's was producing highly sophicated speech synthesizers, including the DECtalk system, which is essentially the electronic voice that is used by Lucy's father, Professor Stephen Hawking.
We hear from Klatt's daughter Laura Fine, who worked with her father, as well as colleagues and researchers in the field of speech synthesis, and we raid the archives of the Acoustical Society of America (much of which was archived by Klatt) for recordings of the wonderful and sometimes weird speech synthesizers.

FRI 07:30 Me and My Shadow (m0007b58)
By Georgia Pritchett. The Titter sisters are a mid-20th century comic duo playing the clubs. They can’t stand one another. A dark comedy - tantalisingly acerbic, witty and macabre, exploring the curse of being the eternal stooge.
Miranda Richardson, star of Harry Potter and Blackadder, plays dark comedy monster and genius Joy. Jessica Gunning (Dr Who and BAFTA nominated film Pride) is Jane - the stooge with hate in her heart, revenge on her mind and a total sense of humour bypass.
The drama marks a welcome return to Radio 4 for star comedy writer Georgia Pritchett, who says, "The play is an investigation, and also a celebration, of comedy, comedians, double acts and jokes." Georgia is a multi-award-winning comedy writer with four Emmys, three WGA awards and a BAFTA. She is co-executive producer and writer on the HBO multi Emmy-winning show Veep and writer and co-executive producer on HBO's show, Succession, now on its second series. She is also writing episodes of Avenue Five, Armando Iannucci’s latest series for television starring Hugh Laurie.

Owen Sheers - I Saw a Man
Episode 5
On a Nevada air base, Major Daniel McCullen is given a new mission. One which will have shattering consequences for the Turners.
'The event that changed all of their lives happened on a Saturday afternoon in June, just minutes after Michael Turner - thinking the Nelsons' house was empty - stepped through their back door.'
After the sudden loss of his wife, writer Michael Turner moves to London and develops a close friendship with the Nelsons, who live next door - Josh, Samantha and their two young daughters Lucy and Rachel. The family seem to represent everything Michael fears he may now never have: intimacy, children, stability and a family home. The new friendship at first seems to offer the prospect of healing, but then a catastrophic event changes everything.
Owen Sheers' compelling story of the search for truth, the burden of secrets and the desire for redemption. It explores how our lives are interconnected, even in today's increasingly depersonalised, globalised world.
