SATURDAY 03 NOVEMBER 2018

SAT 00:00 HG Wells (b007k4kd)
A Dream of Armageddon
Escape

As war breaks out, our hero flees with his wife to try and shield her from the horrors of battle and bloodshed. Can he re-establish the romantic idyll he once enjoyed?

Concluded by Robert Bathurst.

Written in 1901, this is a disturbing vision of the future - as Wells comes uncannily close to predicting the horrors of the Second World War.

English author and political philosopher, HG Wells is recognised as one of sci-fi's founding-fathers. Within his own lifetime, he became a literary celebrity, earning praise from contemporaries such as Henry James and Joseph Conrad. His influence was wide reaching; George Orwell in particular - "The minds of all of us, and therefore the physical world, would be perceptibly different if Wells never existed." In recent years his work has enjoyed a renaissance, including Steven Spielberg's 2005 film of War Of The Worlds.

Wells died on August 13th, 1946, aged 79.

Producer: Gemma Jenkins

In 1947, a crew of intrepid and hard-bitten Norwegians first set out on what was, on the face of it, a pretty flimsy premise - that you could cross the mighty Pacific Ocean from Peru to Polynesia with nothing more solid than a balsa wood raft.

Tony Robinson tells the story of Heyerdahl's epic journey and its lasting effect on popular archaeology.

Producer: Geoff Ballinger

SAT 02:00 Book at Bedtime (b046p4nk)
Sebastian Barry - The Temporary Gentleman
Episode 10

Jack McNulty is a 'temporary gentleman', an Irishman whose commission in the British army in the Second World War was never permanent. In 1957, sitting in his lodgings in Accra, he urgently sets out to write his story recounting his strange and tumultuous marriage to the elusive great beauty of Sligo, Mai Kirwan, and the inevitable fate that he now feels compelled to reconcile himself with. He feels he cannot take one step further, or even hardly a breath, without looking back at all that has befallen him. He is an ordinary man, both petty and heroic, but he has seen extraordinary things.

The Temporary Gentleman is, ultimately, a story about a man's last bid for freedom, from the savage realities of the past and from himself.

Ciarán Hinds is one of Ireland's most prolific and esteemed actors. His many television and film credits include: Game of Thrones, Munich, The Sea, Road to Perdition, There Will Be Blood, Frozen, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, The Woman in Black and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Nowadays, retailers have tight controls over the colours they choose and how they are produced. Tracey visits Marks & Spencer to find out how digital technology ensures they manufacture exactly the same shade of green across different fabrics, from your woollen coat to leather shoes.

SAT 02:45 Book of the Week (b03k2gqd)
Penelope Fitzgerald: A Life
Episode 5

Penelope Fitzgerald's novels were short, spare masterpieces, self-concealing, oblique and subtle. She won the Booker Prize for her novel Offshore in 1979, and her last work, The Blue Flower, was acclaimed as a work of genius.

The early novels drew on her own experiences - a boat on the Thames in the 1960s, the BBC in war-time, a failing bookshop in Suffolk, an eccentric stage-school. The later ones opened out to encompass historical worlds which, magically, she seemed to possess entirely: Russia before the Revolution, post-war Italy, Germany in the time of the Romantic writer Novalis.

Fitzgerald's life is as various and as cryptic as her fiction. It spans most of the twentieth century, and moves from a Bishop's Palace to a sinking barge, from a demanding intellectual family to hardship and poverty, from a life of teaching and obscurity to a blaze of renown.

She was first published at sixty and became famous at eighty. This is a story of lateness, patience and persistence - a private form of heroism.

Loved and admired, and increasingly recognised as one of the outstanding novelists of her time, she remains also mysterious and intriguing. She liked to mislead people with a good imitation of an absent-minded old lady, but under that scatty front was a steel-sharp brain and an imagination of wonderful reach.

This biography by Hermione Lee pursues Fitzgerald's life, her writing, and her secret self, with fascinated interest.

Read by Penelope Wilton
Abridged by Libby Spurrier
Producer: Joanna Green

A Pier production for BBC Radio 4.

SAT 13:00 The Second Pan Book of Horror Stories (Omnibus) (b0bqfcpk)

The Pan Book of Horror Stories was a paperback series of short story anthologies first published in 1959. The early editions were known for their lurid cover art and editor Herbert Van Thal’s pick of stories by new authors alongside classics of the genre. It was credited with introducing a new generation to the horror tradition – back in the 1960s, volumes were handed round in school playgrounds in the same way that kids trade computer games today.

The Second Pan Book Of Horror Stories, published in 1962, was considered to be one of the best. Anita Sullivan has selected five from this edition for her own fresh interpretation:

* The Vertical Ladder by William Sansom:
A dare turns into an exercise in fear limitation as Cleggy finds himself high up and hanging on. But he is not alone.

* The Speciality Of The House by Stanley Ellin.

SUN 06:00 Charlotte Bronte - Shirley (b03yh8b7)
Omnibus

Robert has suddenly left Yorkshire, unaware that Caroline has fallen into a deep sickness.

Charlotte Bronte's tale of romantic entanglements and turbulent times in the Yorkshire of 1811.

Omnibus of the last five of ten parts adapted by Rachel Joyce.

Set against a Yorkshire industrial background, Bronte's powerful second novel is also an impassioned plea for social equality - for workers and women alike. Set during the time of the Luddite unrest, two strands weave together. One, the struggles of workers against mill owners, the other involving the romantic entanglements of the two heroines - Shirley Keelder and Caroline Helstone. It is the friendship of these two women, and the contrast between their situations, that lies at the heart of the piece. Many believe the character of Shirley was written for, and about, Charlotte's sister, Emily, who was dying as Charlotte wrote the novel.

An earthy, vivid and poignant re-telling of one of the lesser-known Bronte classics. The scenes of dangerous social unrest and conflict and love are as relevant today as when the novel was published. It's a story of friendship and love, longing and loss. A rollicking good story with plenty of cliffhangers to keep you hooked to the very end.

Charlotte Bronte .... Lesley Sharp
Shirley .... Jemima Rooper
Caroline .... Joanne Froggatt
Robert Moore .... Joseph Kloska

Helstone .... Sean Murray

The Listening Project is a Radio 4 initiative that offers a snapshot of contemporary Britain in which people across the UK volunteer to have a conversation with someone close to them about a subject they've never discussed intimately before. The conversations are being gathered across the UK by teams of producers from local and national radio stations who facilitate each encounter. Every conversation - they're not BBC interviews, and that's an important difference - lasts up to an hour, and is then edited to extract the key moment of connection between the participants. Most of the unedited conversations are being archived by the British Library and used to build up a collection of voices capturing a unique portrait of the UK in the second decade of the millennium. The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

At the same time, it's also a novel of redemption, of the possibility of forgiveness, hope and reconciliation, and the healing power of love.

SUN 16:00 Saturday Drama (b03hmh3t)
Christopher Lee - Air-Force One

Martin Jarvis directs a stellar American cast, headed by Stacy Keach, Glenne Headly, Susan Sullivan, Steven Weber - and introduced by Josh Stamberg - in Christopher Lee's extraordinary play.

On November 22nd, 1963, President John F Kennedy was assassinated by a sniper while riding in an open-topped limousine in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas.

What happened immediately after the assassination?

Theories explored in Lee's riveting drama are based on Federal, classified and academic research, diaries and recollections, and statements by Mrs Kennedy - a mix of substantiated and contested documentation. He focuses, first, on the hospital mortuary, and then aboard Air Force One where former Vice President Lyndon B Johnson insists that Judge Sarah Hughes conducts the 'swearing-in' before take-off. Also present in the overcrowded aircraft is Kennedy's widow, Jackie, in a state of shock, still covered in blood. The play becomes a tense thriller as surprising events occur on board.

MON 06:30 Last of The Last of the Summer Wine (b00tjf81)

Broadcaster and poet Ian McMillan pays tribute to television's longest-running situation comedy 'Last of the Summer Wine', which ran from 1973 to 2010.

It would be hard to argue that Last Of The Summer Wine is anything but a British classic. Until recently the world's longest running TV situation comedy seemed immortal. In its heyday, the adventures of senior citizens Compo, Foggy and Clegg drew audiences of 19 million.

The lyrical adventures of three bungling, elderly oddballs have charmed viewers of all generations for over a third of a century, and this programme charts the shows unbelievable success.

The show was pioneering in many ways, one of which was the decision to have and ultimately set the trend for a double length Christmas special.

Including exclusive interviews with major cast members and archive of the late Bill Owen and Kathy Staff, who turned the character of battleaxe Nora Batty into a treasured national icon, the programme delves behind the scenes with writer Roy Clarke and producer/director Alan J. W. Bell who offer fascinating insights into the show's journey from script to screen.

Cast members pay tribute to Ronnie Hazlehurst's theme music and and McMillan calls to mind his own favourite characters in the series.

The programme examines why the series has survived so long, surprising critics, audiences and even the BBC itself which has often been accused of underestimating its importance.

1914

Voices of the First World War has been broadcast throughout the commemorative period on Radio 4 as a 50-part series in which Dan Snow brings together the sound archive collections of the Imperial War Museums and the BBC, to tell the story of the war through the recollections of those who were there. The series, which will conclude in the week running up to November 11th 2018, has been tracing the story of the war, year by year, by drawing on interviews in the oral history collection of the IWM and the rushes for the BBC’s ‘Great War’ series of 1964.

All this week on 4 Extra, five hour-long editions will explore the events of each year of the war through the memories of those who actually took part. In this first programme exploring the men’s experience of the beginning of the war in 1914, speakers recall in great detail, as though it were yesterday, their first impressions of France as they arrived, the shock of seeing their first casualty and hearing their first shell, their daily and nightly routines as soldiers, and their psychological state in the face of so much trauma. And we hear recollections of the much-mythologised Christmas Truce of 1914, from the point of view of those who witnessed it.

Poetry's Passing Bells

Poet and presenter of Poetry Extra, Daljit Nagra, leads Radio 4 Extra’s memorial to the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War – on 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918. Daljit introduces programmes from the BBC radio archive that traces the impact the First World War had upon poets, both soldiers, and those left behind.

Beginning each edition will be the poetry, and letters, of Wilfred Owen, who died in the weeks before the end of the Great War, in November 1918, aged only 25.

Series 7
St John's College, Cambridge

A funny and dynamic quiz show hosted by Steve Punt - this week from St John's College, Cambridge with specialist subjects including Human, Social and Political Sciences, World History and Physics and questions ranging from Christoffel Symbols to Cannibal Rituals via August Strindberg and Jojo Moyes.

The programme is recorded on location at a different University each week, and it pits three Undergraduates against three of their Professors in an original and fresh take on an academic quiz.

The rounds vary between Specialist Subjects and General Knowledge, quickfire bell-and-buzzer rounds and the Highbrow and Lowbrow round cunningly devised to test not only the students' knowledge of current affairs, history, languages and science, but also their Professors' awareness of television, sport, and quite possibly Justin Bieber. In addition, the Head-to-Head rounds see students take on their Professors in their own subjects, offering plenty of scope for mild embarrassment on both sides.

Other Universities featured in this series include Roehampton, Hull, Derby, Liverpool and Queen's University Belfast.

Produced by David Tyler

WED 06:30 Mr Cole Comes to Kensington (b03m40zs)

Christopher Frayling explores the legacy of Henry Cole, dynamic founder of London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the vibrant design partnership with the Royal College of Art.

At the time of the Great Exhibition in 1851, British design was fast losing out to the Continent. But by 1871, the South Kensington Museum (now the V&A) with its pioneering public restaurant, free admission days and evening openings, had become a blueprint for design museums worldwide.

The man behind this remarkable achievement was Henry Cole, inventor of the commercial Christmas card, who had helped introduce the Penny Post. A bustling, rotund figure with a mane of white hair, 'Old King' Cole transformed what had been a teaching collection of plaster casts into a world-leading museum of art and design. But despite the patronage of Prince Albert, it proved an arduous journey, often fraught with opposition from a suspicious Establishment.

Christopher Frayling is a former Rector of the Royal College of Art and former V&A Trustee.

Contributors include British fashion designer and RCA graduate Zandra Rhodes and former V&A Director Sir Roy Strong.

And if either side damage the train track - will they ever get out of the desert?

Meticulously based on unit war diaries and eye-witness accounts, each episode of TOMMIES traces one real day at war, exactly 100 years ago, telling untold stories about the war in Gaza, Gallipoli, Serbia, Mesopotamia, Russia, Macedonia, Italy, Turkmenistan and Tanzania, as well as on the Western Front.

And through it all, we've followed the fortunes of Mickey Bliss and his fellow signallers, from the Lahore Division of the British Indian Army. They are the cogs in an immense machine, one which connects situations across the whole theatre of the war, over four long years.

Colin Bateman explores how a woman's chance encounter in a supermarket reawakens her painful past and stirs an overwhelming desire for vengeance, while Claire McGowan bring us the story of an archaeological dig which becomes a crime scene upon the discovery of a young woman's body, and Stuart Neville tells of a minister who is asked to commit an unspeakable crime for one of his parishioners. But why? And will he do it?

THU 11:15 Tommies (b0bfz1ss)
22 August 1918

Mrs Adeline Washington is one of only four black American YMCA workers, sent to support the 200,000 black American soldiers arriving in France in 1918.

In this story by Patricia Cumper and Jonathan Ruffle, Mrs Washington's duties should keep her away from the fighting. But when she uncovers a shocking secret about the US 371st Regiment, currently in the frontline at Esnes-en-Argonne, she has to find any way to get there - and fast.

Produced and directed by Jonquil Panting.

THU 18:30 Great Lives (b019rpw0)
Series 26
Vera Brittain

The pacifist Vera Brittain - whose Testament of Youth conveys the toll of the First World War on her generation - is discussed by her daughter Baroness Shirley Williams and Dr Clare Gerada.

Matthew Parris chairs a fascinating and insightful exploration of what it was like to be brought up by Vera Brittain, a mother who was effectively worldwide public property, and so in many ways was simply unavailable to the young Shirley. Vera, who as a teenage feminist was desperate for an education, turned her back on her studies at Oxford in 1914, because she felt compelled to serve as a nurse, wanting to join her brother and his friends in the Trenches as far as she could.

The rest of Vera Brittain's life was shaped by the grief that followed the loss of her fiance, her own brother and two good friends. Candidly conveying all this in her best selling book, 'Testament of Youth', won her a lifelong audience.

Shirley Williams explains that as a result of these experiences her mother became a passionately committed pacifist and feminist, who in 1944 denounced Bomber Command's blanket bombing of Germany at a time when it was deeply unpopular to do so. Brittain was vindicated in the eyes of the press when it was revealed that she and her husband George Catlin were the only married couple to feature in the Gestapo's notorious Black Book, listing those who would have been executed, had the German invasion of the UK been successful.

Dr Clare Gerada, Chair of the Royal College of GPs, nominates a fascinating life in a programme that reflects on two influential women - mother and daughter - who have played key public roles across the entire twentieth century.

Producer: Mark Smalley.

FRI 06:30 The FAE Sonata (b00sjbsx)

Frei Aber Einsam - 'free but lonely' - was the motto of the great 19th century violinist Joseph Joachim. It's also the name of a Violin Sonata played by Joachim, accompanied by Clara Schumann, that resulted from a collaboration between the composer Robert Schumann and two of his pupils, Johannes Brahms and Albert Dietrich.

On the 200th anniversary of Schumann's birth, Tom Robinson examines the complex relationships between these romantic artists through the prism of this piece of music. Schumann's passionate love for his wife Clara is matched only by Brahms' devotion to her during and following Schumann's decline into mental illness.

Brahms was also a close champion of Joachim, until the violinist's divorce, when they fell out over the composer's support for Joachims' wife. And the FAE Sonata itself was neglected - an innocent victim - until long after Brahms' death.

Tom unpicks the romantic and turbulent story of a musical collaboration with the help of pianist and Schumann champion Lucy Parham, violinist Tasmin Little, Robert John Godfrey of 'The Enid' and Radio 3's Andrew McGregor.

Producer: Alan Hall
A Falling Tree production for BBC Radio 4.

Mr Gray's Decorators

By John Nicholson, Richard Katz and Javier Marzan

In 19th-century London, a butler struggles to keep pace with the destructive lifestyle of his employer, a hauntingly good-looking and impressionable young man of means. The butler hires painter-decorators to carry out repairs but when they accidentally damage a portrait hidden in the attic, they find that it has alarming effects on the young man.

In this new series the comedy troupe Peepolykus assume the roles of minor characters in great works of fiction and derail the plot of the book through their hapless buffoonery.

Cast:

Richard . . . . . Richard Katz
Javier . . . . . Javier Marzan
John . . . . . John Nicholson
Dorian Gray . . . . . Blake Ritson
Sybil . . . . . Rebecca Hamilton
Lord Henry . . . . . Stephen Critchlow
Basil . . . . . Sam Dale
Young Dorian . . . . . Evie Killip

Director . . . . . Sasha Yevtushenko

Peepolykus (pronounced people-like-us) has exported its brand of irreverent comic theatre to over 100 towns and cities across four continents, often under the auspices of the British Council. The company's varied CV includes two tours of Bangladesh, winning the audience award at The Tehran Festival, performing to royalty in Brunei, to Indian states people in the Himalayas, a truly disastrous run in Barbados, an unforgettable stint on The Price is Right in Australia and other occasional bits of telly for the BBC. Their theatre scripts are licensed world wide and their award-winning musical with NYMT:UK is pencilled for re-launch. The company has also played for 3 months in the West End and collaborated with numerous organisations including Neal Street Productions, Aardman, NT, The Kevin Spacey Foundation and currently with Brunel University on STUCK - working with schools to adopt improvisation into the curriculum. Past forays on Radio 4 have included a co-penned series with Rik Mayall, a star-studded adaptation of A Christmas Carol and a live recording of The Hound of The Baskervilles. Peepolykus is produced by Eleanor Lloyd Productions.

1917

Reaching 1917, Dan Snow explores the events of the year through the recollections of those who were there. As the fighting became more and more desperate, in the air, on the Western Front - even below ground in extensive mining operations - the morale of those being sent into battle was at times becoming dangerously low. We reach the darkest days of the war with the Third Battle of Ypres. Dan Snow, based on location in Ypres and listening to the accounts of those who survived the place a century ago, attempts to grasp the unimaginable horror that marked this period of the war on the Western Front.

As they inched their way towards Passchendaele from July to November 1917, men witnessed scenes that would stay vividly with them for the rest of their lives. As Norman Macmillan, officer of the Royal Flying Corps, surveying the Battle of Passchendaele from the sky, said of it: 'Never at any time had I passed through such an extraordinary experience... Real damnation on the ground. And as we came out of it I felt that we had escaped from one of the most evil things I had ever seen at any time during that war'.

A Record of War (1981)
The 1914-18 war has been recalled mainly in the writings and reminiscences of the men who fought in France. But women too shared the suffering, the heartbreak and the loss. In 1981, this programme attempted to put the record straight, with readings from the then newly published Scars Upon My Heart, an anthology of women's poetry and verse of the First World War, and from Vera Brittain's published war diary, Chronicle of Youth, also published in 1981.
