Pete Paphides, writer and music critic, talks to family, friends and fans of Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts cartoon. He asks why he related so strongly to long suffering Charlie Brown and why Peanuts was the most successful newspaper comic strip of all time.
Featuring interviews with Schulz's widow, Jean Schulz, two of his children- Craig and Jill, as well as contributions from graphic designer Chip Kidd, comic book artist Chris Ware and life-long fan Russell T. Davies.
He created Peanuts in 1950, and Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Shroeder et al still hold a huge place in people's lives and memories. The Peanuts comic strip was the most popular cartoon strip of all time and crossed boundaries of young and old- some claim it did for comic strips what the Beatles did for music. Others called it 'a beat strip', perfectly reflecting American society. But its appeal was global.
Using the most minimum of lines, Schulz was able to convey emotions and humour. His characters were contemplative, philosophical, isolated, sometimes depressed. And surprisingly they made clever observations about classical music, theology psychiatry and sport. Classic story-lines included the Great Pumpkin, Lucy vying for attention at Shroeder's piano, Linus' blanket, Snoopy versus the Red Baron, and Charlie Brown never kicking the football.
Charlie Brown, the central character was isolated and lonely. A real person, with real problems was a new idea in comics and he spoke to people all over the world- including the presenter of this programme, Pete Paphides, growing up in Birmingham.
A White Pebble Media production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in November 2010.

We think that people are lying when they mumble or they are embarrassed, but the liars amongst us are often those who are the most fluent speakers, the most charming people. Ian Leslie describes how two researchers discovered ways to pick those who were being economical with the truth.
Ian Leslie was born in 1972 and lives in London. He combines careers in advertising and writing. His first book, To be President (Politicos, 2008), an account of the 2008 US presidential election, was described by Adam Boulton as 'brilliantly capturing the drama and emotion of Obama's successful run for the White House' and was extracted by Granta. He regularly appears as an analyst of American politics on Sky and the BBC. He has written about politics, culture, marketing and psychology for Prospect, the Guardian, the Times and the BBC. He also blogs about all these things at Marbury, named one of the fifty 'Most Powerful' blogs in the world by the Observer.
'Consistently startling and fascinating. Most popular psychology books follow a depressingly familiar path: there's some dodgy theorising at the beginning, then a raft of dubious statistics with a few anecdotes to back them up. Born Liars, however, is in quite a different league. It's erudite yet wears its learning lightly and is full of terrific stories. It will also make you see yourself, and the world around you, in a new light.' - 'Book of the Week', Daily Mail

THU 06:30 Why Go? (b00s9g0b)
Chris Ledgard explores the world of the ancient oriental game of Go.
The game of Go expresses "a psychological essence" of the Far East, according to the British Museum's Dr Irving Finkel. It's ancient, but no-one knows quite how old - the claim that it originated 4,000 years ago is open to question. What's beyond doubt is its place in oriental culture. The remarkable cave of Buddhist treasures discovered at Dunhuang on the Silk Road through China included a 6th century Go manual now kept in the British Library. Miniature Go boards and pieces have turned up in ancient burial sites. In the twentieth century, some of Japan's finest writers turned to Go for inspiration, following major games and probing the psychology of the top players. And, as the first atomic bomb fell, two of the world's best exponents of Go were playing a title match on the outskirts of Hiroshima.
But Go is little known in the West. This is in spite of the efforts of one of the two players in what became known as the Atom Bomb Game, Iwamoto Kaoru, who spent his later years setting up Go Centres in Europe and the Americas.
In Why Go?, Chris Ledgard explores the world of Go, talking to experts in the East and West about the game's history and culture, and examining some its ancient artefacts. Dr Finkel discusses Go's place in the history of games. After Go, he says, "you could argue that the world's board games went downhill." Susan Whitfield, the Director of the International Dunhuang Project, brings the fifteen hundred year Go manual out of storage and explains how it was discovered and what it tells us. Britain's two foremost experts on the game describe how they got hooked, and Chris Ledgard visits Amsterdam to examine Iwamoto Kaoru's legacy and find out why, in spite of all the time and money he spent, relatively few people in Europe play the game.
Go's Chinese name is weiqi, which is often translated as "the surrounding game". It's a game of co-existence. Two players, one with black stones the other with white, place their pieces on the intersections of a board marked with 19 x 19 lines. The aim is to secure territory and the emphasis is on long-term strategy, subtlety, and not bludgeoning your opponent. Rob Foster, a translator of the Dunhuang manal, describes the game as "a conversation...it's hand talk".
And the programme addresses the key question of whether - as some argue - Go reflects aspects of oriental thinking and is a game few western players really understand.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010.

The Call of the Wild
Ronnie Corbett returns for the final series of his popular sitcom by Ian Davidson and Peter Vincent.
Ronnie is granddad Sandy and his old dog is Henry. If the dog dies or his lodger moves on, Sandy's children want him to downsize. He doesn't.
To help his finances, Sandy, still in the family home, took in a young couple as lodgers. But then the man left - leaving the attractive Dolores behind. And she, Sandy's children are quite sure, is a gold-digger. Sandy's opinion that it would be inhuman to move Henry somewhere unfamiliar is wearing a bit thin - as is the old dog himself. Keeping the dog alive and keeping the lodger happy are one thing; what really concerns Sandy deeply is providing a guiding hand to his whole family, advising here, prompting there, responding to any emergency callout... If he kept himself to himself, of course, things would be a lot simpler and smoother. But a lot duller too...
Episode Two - The Call Of The Wild
Henry the dog takes up running away and then granddaughter Calais runs away too. Sandy realises that for Calais' sake, her mother Victoria, his fearsome wildcat daughter-in-law, must be confronted. What Henry's up to nobody knows...

Can't Tell Nathan Caton Nothing - tells the story of young, up-and-coming comedian Nathan Caton, who after becoming the first in his family to graduate from University, opted not to use his architecture degree but instead to try his hand at being a full-time stand-up comedian, much to his family's annoyance who desperately want him to get a 'proper job.'
Each episode illustrates the criticism, interference and rollercoaster ride that Nathan endures from his disapproving family as he tries to pursue his chosen career in comedy.
Janet a.k.a. Mum is probably the kindest and most lenient of the disappointed family members. At the end of the day she just wants the best for her son. However, she'd also love to brag and show her son off to her friends, but with Nathan only telling jokes for a living it's kind of hard to do. She loves Nathan, but she aint looking embarrassed for nobody!
Martin a.k.a. Dad works in the construction industry and was looking forward to his son getting a degree so the two of them could work together in the same field. But now Nathan has blown that dream out of the window. Martin is clumsy and hard-headed and leaves running the house to his wife (she wouldn't allow it to be any other way).
Shirley a.k.a. Grandma cannot believe Nathan turned down architecture for comedy. She can't believe she left the paradise in the West Indies and came to the freezing United Kingdom for a better life so that years later her grandson could 'tell jokes!' How can her grandson go on stage and use foul language and filthy material... it's not the good Christian way!
So with all this going on in the household what will Nathan do? Will he be able to persist and follow his dreams? Or will he give in to his family's interference?

FRI 06:30 The Manchester Writers (b00tbck6)
John Harris explores the work of a group of authors who captured a northern social realism in the 1930s with writing that went on to shape the views of northern living for generations.
Walter Greenwood, Howard Spring and Louis Golding wrote about Greater Manchester at a time of severe economic depression and great poverty and their novels describe conditions that have resonances with our life today - cuts in welfare, increased unemployment and a coalition government.
Greenwood's 'Love on the Dole', Golding's 'Magnolia Street' and Spring's 'Fame is the Spur' depict a tough, working class life and although the three authors wrote from slightly different perspectives, they describe people enduring a grim, hard existence in an industrial landscape.
As the final parts of industrial Manchester and Salford are finally transformed by investment and modernisation, 'The Manchester Writers' visits the streets that inspired these authors and hears how their work has endured and influenced ideas of northern England.

Born Liars: Why We Can't Live Without Deceit
Episode 5
The 'murderer at the door' refers to the moral dilemma of whether you tell the truth if the honest answer will threaten someone's life. How did philosophers square with that conundrum?
