Publicity Stunts

Episode 1

Private Detective V I Warshawski is being set up for a murder she didn't commit - of a woman she hardly knew. Read by Buffy Davis.

The victim is a famous crime fiction writer. Her latest book threatens to uncover the shame of a small American town whose dark secrets and those of her tormentor have been buried for decades.

Sara Paretsky has created one of the most popular female sleuths in modern crime fiction. Her heroine, V I Warshawski, is a strong female character in a male-dominated world. V I is comfortable packing heat and trailing nasty suspects but she never loses touch with her basic femininity. Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled by the way women were portrayed in (detective fiction) they always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was time for a tough, smart, likeable female private investigator".

SAT 01:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc (b00sgbcr)
Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and so light and bendy, that they were often given away free with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock. In telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical Express in 1972).

In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every issue). The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs galore, including several advertisements for products as diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest circulation flexidisc ever.

Presenter Paul Bayley previously presented The Strange Parallel World of Christian Pop for Radio 4, which subsequently inspired Frank Cottrell Boyce's radio play The Believers. The producer is Bob Dickinson.

MON 06:30 Fly Me to the Reverend Moon (b00s08g6)
When American Studies student John Waite was approached in Manchester in the early 1970s and offered the chance of a free trip to America, he jumped at the opportunity. Only once he, and a plane load of other sudents, actually arrived at a large estate in upstate New York, did he learn that the people footing the bill were the Unification Church, known to tabloid readers across the world as The Moonies. Over the course of the following days and weeks John and the students were kept on the estate as the Church tried to win them over, in order that its message might be taken back to Britain with these bright young things. Abigail Docherty - Ursula and Boy

Inspired by the true story of Ursula Kemp whose eight year-old son testified against her for witchcraft in St. Osyth, Essex, in 1582.

In Elizabethan England, Jean Bodin, a French aristocrat brings news to Queen Elizabeth of 'Sorcieres and Wytches' abroad in her country. The luminaries of her court - and those who wanted to find favour - set out to root out witches within their wards. Brian Darcy, Justice of the Peace in St. Osyth, arrives in the town of his birth. He is here to do his duty, and at church on Sunday he watches the women of the town with a sharp eye.

Some days later, Grace Thurlowe, arrives in his drawing room with the news he is hoping for. Ursula Kemp, a local apothecary, has bewitched Grace's family. She sent familiars into Grace's house to rock the cradle where her ten-month old baby lay - the child fell, smashing her head on the stone floor. And now the child is dead. Ursula cursed Grace, and now Grace is lame. Ursula will have to pay.

Ursula's illegitimate son does not know his name, or who his father is. His mother will not tell him. So he imagines instead. And his wild imaginings fuel the fire underneath Ursula. Ursula is bought before Brian Darcy, and Darcy presents her with an impossible choice.

Abigail Docherty won the Tron Open Stage Playwrighting Competition 2010 for her play Sea, Land and Sky.

Natalie Press is best known for playing the lead in Andrea Arnold's Oscar-winning short Wasp. She also appears in Arnold's Red Road and in Pawel Pawlikowski's My Summer of Love with Emily Blunt.

MON 22:30 Kerry's List (b01s46vd)
Series 1

Episode 1

The first in a four-part sketch show co-written by and starring comedian and actress Kerry Godliman.

Kerry is a married mother of two, a stand up comedian and has two children. Her life can only properly function with her daily list - if she didn't compile this vital list, her life would simply fall apart.

Each week, this series looks at a different list and delves into Kerry's madcap world by looking at various elements of that week's list in sketches, narrative and stand up.

In this first episode, Kerry's List includes avoiding eBay, de-scaling the kettle, looking good and being romantic for Valentine's Day, buying jeans, retrieving an asthma pump from the Hoover, toning her upper arms and reviewing the plumber!

Joining Kerry is her husband Ben (played by her real husband Ben Abell) and her five year old daughter Elsie (played by Melissa Bury) together with a range of bizarre characters - including an enthusiastic council environment worker, some disgruntled satsumas, a bored therapist, a Fairy Jeanmother and a very keen gym instructor.

Any busy parent who's ever compiled a list of their own will relate to Kerry Godliman's incident filled world.

The cast includes David Pusey (who co-wrote the series), Bridget Christie, Lucy Briers, Rosie Cavaliero and Nicholas Le Prevost.

Kerry Godliman is fast establishing herself as a highly skilful stand up comic and actress, from her recent appearances on Live at The Apollo (BBC 1), Derek (C4) and Our Girl (BBC 1).

TUE 06:30 Stefan Gates's Cover Story (b00qfzbw)
When he was four, food writer Stefan Gates appeared on the cover of Led Zeppelin's classic album Houses of the Holy. This deeply personal programme follows him as he investigates for the first time the story behind this iconic cover.

It is a famously unsettling image. Taken at the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland, Stefan and his sister Samantha appear naked climbing up the eerie landscape against a bright orange apocalyptic sky.

It's a photo that's dogged Stefan all his life. Ever since he was a child, the picture has disturbed him, even scared him. He's ambivalent about it; should he be proud of it or is there something to be ashamed of? He's purposely never found out the story behind it. He has never even listened to the record.

Now he sets out to revisit that chapter in his life and to confront his own mixed emotions about it, discovering the story behind the image, and its ideas and ethics. He discovers his sister's memories of the difficulties in getting it made, confronts his mother about why she let him pose naked as a child and meets Aubrey Powell, the cover art's photographer, from the famous graphic design team Hipgnosis. Finally, he makes an emotional journey back to the Giants Causeway to listen to the album for the very first time.

Susie Maguire - I Got the Dog

Andria's Story

Susie Maguire's trilogy of comic stories about the fallout from a break up. Who gets left with what? Music, water, transportation, arithmetic...possessions, separations...and Love. Rebecca Front reads Andria's story.

Andria fell hook, line and sinker for the enigmatic and brooding Russian pianist, Boris. They met at a street market and the attraction was instant. He posted a little Russian doll through her letterbox with his phone number attached. How could she resist?

She decides to buy a bed. A 'lit bateau'; a boat bed, which she hoped was going to be a metaphor for the fantastic voyage the two of them were about to embark on together.

Sure enough, nine months later, the sound of Boris's piano playing is punctuated by the patter of feet across the parquet floor. Well, they are paws to be precise, belonging to an Italian greyhound that Andria found on the street. They name her Mimi.

Boris's passion for his art, once the very thing that attracted Andria, is becoming a source of friction. That intensity that was once directed to her is now being poured into his music. He's playing piano at 4am in the morning, Andria is angry and Mimi is confused.

After one particularly blazing row, Andria wakes to the realisation that her bed that was once so symbolic of the dreams she held for their future, now resembled the raft of the Medusa. Things can't go on - but what about poor Mimi? Beds, pianos, dogs and shipwrecks as Rebecca Front reads Andria's story.

Susie Maguire's trilogy of comic stories about the fallout from a break up. Who gets left with what? Music, water, dogs, arithmetic, possessions... and love. Vicki Pepperdine reads Chiara's story.

Chiara is a performance artist. She does a little bit of dance, singing, theatre and mime.

Boris was her first Russian. Dimitri was her second, although he was more Hampstead than St Petersburg.

All she has left from these relationships is a selection of battle scars. Surely she can salvage something from this? Never one to under-analyse the events in her life, she convinces herself that she can create something from this mess: "Yes," she decides, "I can workshop this." Pretty quickly she's mapped out an entire performance project complete with Rimsky Korsakov, some 'Eugene Onegin-y' type music, with Boris represented by a Nosferatu figure, whilst Andria and Dimitri are played by a pair of coats and hats. With references to film noir, Dali and Eisenstein all chucked into the melting pot for luck.

Series 1

Dream

Kim's bad dream sparks a heated debate that incorporates Elvis on fire, Stoke on Trent car washes and the literary merits of the New Testament.

What do long term partners really argue about? Sharp comedy from Frank Skinner. A masterclass in the great art of arguing. Starring Frank Skinner and Katherine Parkinson.

Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint - a text from a friend, a trilby and a bad night's sleep. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references (Androcles and the Lion pop up at one point) and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses.

Cast:
Neil ..... Frank Skinner
Kim ..... Katherine Parkinson

Producer/Director: Polly Thomas
An Avalon production for BBC Radio 4.

Warhorses of Letters stars Stephen Fry as Marengo, the seasoned, famous and just-a-little-bit-short mount of Emperor Napoleon. Daniel Rigby stars alongside him as Copenhagen, the frisky young racehorse who as our story begins is about to be the new mount for the Duke of Wellington. This collection of their moving letters to each other is introduced by Tamsin Greig.

Episode 3 sees our heroes' fortunes fluctuate as the Napoleonic Wars get bloodier and colder making it much harder to send Valentine's cards.

Written by novelists Robert Hudson (The Kilburn Social Club) and Marie Phillips (Gods Behaving Badly - soon to be a feature film starring Christopher Walken and Sharon Stone).

Directed by Steven Canny
Produced by Gareth Edwards.

FRI 22:30 Victor Lewis-Smith (b05y41c3)
Episode 6

Economy holidays, unusual phone calls and a very special edition of Crimewatch. The darkly comic world of Victor Lewis-Smith.

Award-winning controversial comedy surfaced on BBC Radio 1 in 1990 in the shape of Victor Lewis-Smith. The writer and producer took a comedy cudgel to the self-satisfied, mid-Atlantic style of the very network he was appearing on - with hoax phone calls, sketches, plus comic takedowns of high profile celebs. It's all deliciously sandwiched between the original jangly Radio 1 jingles made by JAM Creative Productions in Dallas, USA.

Winner of the British Comedy Awards 1990 for Best Radio Comedy.

After making a series of late night programmes for Radio 1, Victor took aim at TV in 1993 with BBC TWO's Inside Victor Lewis Smith, before sparking another stir on Channel 4 in 1998 with TV Offal.

Written by Victor Lewis Smith and Paul Sparks

Produced by Victor Lewis Smith

First heard on BBC Radio 1 in May 1990.
