Ivor Cutler at 90

The deceptively quiet wordsmith was born in 1923 near the Rangers ground at Ibrox Park.

"I have a harmonium and it's going to explode in two minutes", were the opening words spoken on the Andy Kershaw Show in 1980 by a gentle voiced Scotsman called Ivor Cutler.

Championed by everyone from the Beatles to Billy Connolly, Ivor Cutler was a poet, humourist and absurdist whose appearances on BBC radio and television span over 5 decades. As well as producing a vast body of records, books and plays, Ivor was a notable eccentric, often seen cycling around London in plus fours, handing out homemade stickers and badges to strangers.

To mark what would have been Ivor's 90th birthday, BBC Radio 4 held a 'party', to celebrate his life and BBC archive in particular. Except a full house, with performers, fans, collaborators and even his long-term partner, Phyllis King, introducing their favourite poems, songs and memories of Ivor. Weirdness from the archives, pleasure for fans, and a singular introduction to those encountering him for the very first time.

Highlights include Bramwell and King re-enacting a morse code performance of "The Little Black Buzzer".

Presenter: David Bramwell is a writer, musician and, recently, presenter of Sony Award winning "The Haunted Moustache". He is the founder of the "Catalyst Club"; a place for enthusiasts to speak on any subject close to their heart. Ivor Cutler is a subject close to his, having kept correspondence with him in the 1980's.

Producer: Sara Jane Hall.

SAT 09:00 Side By Side By Sherrin (b051vy3z)
Emma Freud celebrates the life and career of Ned Sherrin

Featuring extracts from Tonight, That Was the Week That Was, Loose Ends, Desert Island Discs and a memorable feature about Diary of a Nobody.

Plus new interviews with those who knew him well: theatre critic Michael Coveney, friend and writing collaborator Alistair Beaton, comedian and Loose Ender Arthur Smith and, in a rare interview, actress and singer Millicent Martin.

Qualifying as a barrister, Ned was immediately diverted into the fledgling TV industry. As producer and director he cut his teeth first with ITV and then on Tonight, but it was creating and producing BBC TV's satirical That Was the Week That Was that earned him his reputation.

He proposed a programme that would be: "aware, pointed, irreverent, fundamentally serious, intelligently witty, outspoken in the proper sense of the word, and would provide an opportunity for saying things worth saying and not usually said on television."

Fronted by David Frost it became the must-see event of the week, soon attracting audiences of over 12 million.

But it was the week the laughter stopped that brought TW3 to a global audience. The programme transmitted the day after President John F Kennedy's assassination was a sober, immediate and poignant expression of the nation's mood. The recording was flown overnight to the USA and shown there. It made such an impact that a transcript was admitted into Congressional records.

After that, Ned Sherrin's talent took him into film production, performing on the stage and TV and theatrical writing and directing, but it was radio he loved the most.

But their tranquil idyll is shattered by the explosive arrival of Venus Traduces, hell-bent on recapturing Vera's heart with a series of appalling musical serenades.

Ginny's tiresome husband Lionel has followed her incognito with a portfolio of herbal remedies, but Henry manages to detain him in the pantry whilst Ginny and Vera dive under the covers to devour a steamy new book, Lady Hattersley's Plover by the intriguing proletarian writer D.H. A Door Unlocked

Claudie Blakley reads Ruth Rendell's thriller.

Mary Jago's troubles begin when partner Alastair beats her up for making an anonymous donation of her bone marrow. She flees to house-sit a Georgian mansion in London's Regents Park, apparently safe at last but where she is lonely and her only company is the departing occupants' dog, a shih-tzu called Gushi.

Against her grandmother's advice Mary plans to meet the recipient of her bone marrow, a young man from a local housing estate called Leo Nash. Other characters include: Leslie Bean, a 70 year old dog-walker, who comes twice a day to take Gushi out along with five other dogs; Roman Ashton, who takes to the streets after his wife and children die in a devastating traffic accident; and Hob, a drug addict and part time hit man.

In this opening episode, Mary flees to the apparent tranquillity of Charlotte Cottage - an opulent house which belongs to friends of her grandmother. Once there, she writes a letter to the recipient of her bone marrow, Leo Nash, whom she wants to meet.

Meanwhile, in the park nearby, local drug addict Hob pays for his next hit by beating up a victim for his dealer.

Series 4

The Porter's Story

Written by Rona Munro.

In this first play in Series 4 of The Stanley Baxter Playhouse fellow Scots leading actors Gordon Kennedy, Stuart McQuarrie and Siobhan Redmond join Stanley in a comedy based on Shakespeare's Scottish play, where the porter becomes the hero and invites us to hear his version of the events that led up to the murder of King Duncan; and what just might have happened after it.

We will discover that it was all really Lady Macbeth's fault, for marrying Macbeth and spoiling the porter's long term plans to groom his coarse and unschooled master to be a suave, smooth operator with fine manners and a statesman like approach to politics. His plans are foiled in a series of mishaps which are hilarious and very cunning.

Cast:
Porter ..... Stanley Baxter
Macbeth ...... Gordon Kennedy
Lady Macbeth ...... Siobhan Redmond
Duncan/Nobleman ...... Stuart McQuarrie

Rona Munro is one of Scotland's most highly regarded playwrights, with award winning films [Ken Loach's Lady Bird Lady Bird] and television dramas [Rehab] and her Edinburgh International Festival success The Last Witch to her credit. She is passionate about history and comedy, and The Porter's Story celebrates both of these; a delightful tongue in cheek exposition of events from Scottish history which are still shrouded in mystery; Shakespeare certainly took liberties in his version.

Siobhan Redmond starred in the RSC production of a new play Dunsinane by David Greig, where she played Lady Macbeth. Gordon Kennedy will be known to many for his role as Little John in the BBC TV series Robin Hood.

Producer: Marilyn Imrie
A Catherine Bailey production for BBC Radio 4.

WED 06:30 Fixing A Hole (b00b1nrb)
The life and times of the great British roadworks, and those who dig and despair of them.

Reporter Sara Parker travels from Cumbria to London via the M25 seeking those for whom a freshly-dug hole in the road is a wonder and a delight but a source of desperation for road users and dwellers.

Copenhagen Street is allegedly Britain's most dug-up thoroughfare. It's in North London, and is regularly the subject of the attentions of gas, electricity and cable TV folk who just love to trouble its tarmac. Reporter Sara Parker hails a taxi on Copenhagen Street, where its driver actually lives and feels the rock-and-roll ride across the patchwork quilt of the capital's roads with an expert's commentary in her ears. Meanwhile, in the depths of a Lake District winter, Sara goes out on call with the boys from the blackstuff as they try to keep the hilly roads from cracking in the frost and being washed away by torrents. She joins the men training to dig a decent hole at a hole-in-the-road training centre whose instructor in his spare time loves nothing more than ballroom-dancing the night away while Strictly come digging by day. It's a game of competitive ineptitude, the aim of which is to come up with the wrongest answer to each question. In this episode, the guests joining him to try and out-wrong each other with their ideas and stories are comedians Mark Watson, Holly Walsh and Rufus Hound.

Rufus Hound also presents the comedy chat show My Teenage Diary for Radio 4 and is a team captain on the TV series Argumental. In 2010 he also won BBC1's Let's Dance for Sport Relief, with an unforgettable dancing impersonation of Cheryl Cole's Fight for This Love.

Their husbands, Henry and Lionel, accompany them, hoping to prevent their wives from succumbing to the dangerous animal magnetism of Lollipop, whose book Lady Hattersley's Plover has scandalized and unsettled them all.

Vera's persistent and flamboyant admirer Venus Traduces arrives, desperate to re-kindle their Sapphic passion. However she is distracted when, on the cliff path, she meets a thin man with a red beard who exudes animal magnetism. He informs her that his wife is away in London being painted by Augustus John, invites Venus to call him Dave, and ravishes her in the brambles.

Meanwhile, though Vera and Ginny seem to search in vain for Lollipop, he is always much closer than they think.
