The BBC has announced that it has a sustainable plan for the future of the BBC Singers, in association with The VOCES8 Foundation.
The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

Sam comes home drunk and beats the maid, Jane, with a broom. Then the weather whips up into a gale and The Assurance sinks at Woolwich. Sam goes out on the river to see the wreckage. SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b01sczxf)
Heroes and Hacks

Monicagate. Camillagate. Hackgate. Plebgate.

It's 40 years since the world was introduced to the original "gate" via the televised Senate Watergate Hearings. In this Archive on 4, journalist Eamonn O'Neill investigates the Watergate legacy. The film All the President's Men, with Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, inspired an entire generation of journalists. "Deep Throat," "inside sources" and "follow the money" became buzzwords for a supposedly golden age of journalism.

But was it really hard-bitten reporting that brought down the leader of the free world? Or is that it a convenient myth, aided by Hollywood, indulgently lifting the expectations of journalists?

40 years later in Britain, the golden age seems to be long gone, thanks to the excesses of "Hackgate." It was Watergate in reverse, a scandal that brought down journalists, leaving politicians largely intact.

Eamonn examines the nature of modern investigative journalism, through archive from Watergate and other political scandals since. He talks to Washington Post journalists, including Bob Woodward, about their heroic status. He meets the new breed of "heroic" investigative journalists, including Heather Brooke, who helped expose the MPs expenses scandal, and Nick Davies, who exposed the phone hacking scandal for The Guardian.

Eamonn also looks at fate of the investigative press in a post-Leveson environment, searching for the line between hero and hack.

Producer: Colin McNulty

It's That Man Again - ITMA made a radio superstar of Tommy Handley (1894-1949) and had more than 20 million devoted listeners to the BBC Home Service each week - with millions more around the world. The show's title came from a newspaper headline used in stories about Adolf Hitler in the lead up to the Second World War.
Catchphrases like "TTFN - Ta-Ta for now" and "Can I Do You Now, Sir?" coupled with a frenetic, topical approach made it utterly distinctive.

Series 2

Let Me Entertain Me

The discovery of a poet on the colony sets off a bomb, a monster, a sword fight and a poem. But is Archer really capable of murder?

The return of the hit sitcom starring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Vicki Pepperdine ("Getting On") set on a shiny new planet.

Welcome to the colony. We're aware that, having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.

Personnel:
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst), is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.

Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

The Diary of Samuel Pepys - Series 2

Episode 1

Kris Marshall returns as the famous diarist. As many of us do, Pepys begins the year - 1661 - with a resolution: to restrain himself in the expensive pleasures of theatre-going and drinking. He fails spectacularly on both counts. Free, for once, from builders, Samuel and Elizabeth are living happily in Seething Lane with their servants Jane and Will. All is well, until Sam's sister, Paulina, moves in with them - not as a family member and equal but as a third servant. Preparations are in hand for the Coronation of King Charles but the city is on alert for the nonconformist Fifth Monarchists who believe that Jesus is about to return as 'King of Kings'. Their leader, Thomas Venner, is caught, hanged, drawn and quartered. In the unseasonably warm winter weather, the bodies of Cromwell, Ireton and Bradshaw are exhumed and hanged. Elizabeth goes to see the spectacle but Samuel stays home.

Dramatised by Hattie Naylor.

Evil Narbara

The hit Radio 4 series 'Fags, Mags & Bags' returns with a 4th series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.

Written by and starring Donald McLeary and Sanjeev Kohli 'Fags, Mags & Bags' has proved a hit with the Radio 4 audience with the show also collecting a Sony nomination and a Writers' Guild award in 2008. This brand new series sees a crop of new shop regulars, and some guest appearances along the way from the likes of Mina Anwar and Kevin Eldon.

In this episode a rowdy party shop run by an unfriendly sort causes havoc amongst the local traders association after a number of undesirables descend on the town.

So join the staff of 'Fags, Mags and Bags' in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of 30 years, and is a firmly entrenched feature of the local area. Ramesh loves the art of the 'shop'.

However; he does apply the 'low return' rules of the shop to all other aspects of his life. Ramesh is ably assisted by his shop sidekick Dave, a forty-something underachiever who shares Ramesh's love of the art of shopkeeping, even if he is treated like a slave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business, and Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them whether they like it or not!
