Sport for All

Clare Balding asks why and when did the British government get involved in sport. How did sport become part of politics, in a country which had always prided itself on keeping them apart?
The Nazis threw immense resources behind the German team for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, while the British Foreign Office still thought sport should be, ' a private affair between private individuals' free of government interference. However by the 1950's post war politicians began to think that physical recreation and games might be a cure for the general apathy and discontent of British youth as exemplified by the teddy boys, mods and rockers of the era.

SAT 06:00 James Baldwin 90th Anniversary: No Complaints (b04cfdhm)
If he had lived James Baldwin would have celebrated his 90th birthday today, 2nd August 2014. He died in 1987 aged 63.

The American novelist, playwright, poet and polemicist came to prominence during the 1950s and 60s, decades torn by the struggle for civil rights in America. Born into relative poverty in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin was a trailblazing explorer of race, class and sexuality in America in novels like Go Tell It On The Mountain (1953), Giovanni's Room (1956), Another Country (1962) and Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone (1968). After first visiting Paris in 1948, Baldwin eventually made his home in France. In 1984 Caryl Phillips - the future prize winning British novelist - met James Baldwin at his French home. Baldwin had become a mentor to the young writer and he allowed him to record an extraordinary interview with him - just three years before his death. It ranged from Baldwin's childhood and the realisation of his homosexuality, to his struggle against naked racism in America. Baldwin said whatever he had endured he had 'no complaints' - giving the programme its title - No Complaints - when it was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in November 1984.

To mark the 90th anniversary Caryl Phillips returns to that interview, to record his thoughts and feelings about James Baldwin's legacy, and to introduce his own 2004 Radio 4 play: A Kind of Home - James Baldwin in Paris. A play inspired by Baldwin's fateful journey to Paris as a young, penniless, black, homosexual writer struggling to survive.

It was a struggle that helped create one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century.

Made for 4 Extra. The producer was Peter McHugh.

Fellow climber Stephen Venables recalls Sir Chris Bonington's fraught but successful 1975 expedition to Everest. From 2005.

Mountaineering is a harsh, unforgiving but ultimately rewarding pursuit - Chris Bonington's 1975 excursion up the South West face of Everest was marred by two deaths, but captured the public's imagination. With significantly less technological advantages than present-day climbers, Chris Bonington's team were faced with numerous personal and environmental challenges. He kept an audio diary which helps piece together the team's progress.

Also a writer, photographer and engineer, Sir Chris Bonington has written 17 books and finally reached the summit of Everest in 1985 with a Norwegian expedition. He has been mountaineering since 1951, when he was 16 years old, and continues to this day.

From 26/09/1941

Could Mayor Tommy Handley be about to lose his post in high office?

With Jack Train, Horace Percival, Sydney Keith, Dino Galvani, Fred Yule, Dorothy Summers, Kay Cavendish, Clarence Wright and Paula Green.

It's That Man Again - ITMA made a radio superstar of Tommy Handley (1894-1949) and had more than 20 million devoted listeners to the BBC Home Service each week - with millions more around the world. The show's title came from a newspaper headline used in stories about Adolf Hitler in the lead up to the Second World War.

Catchphrases like "TTFN - Ta-Ta for now" and "Can I Do You Now, Sir?" coupled with a frenetic, topical approach made it utterly distinctive.

From 1939 to 1949, over 310 episodes were broadcast, breaking away from existing comedy and music hall conventions with an anarchic and irreverent style - created by its writer Ted Kavanagh.

Producer: Francis Worsley.

First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in September 1941.

First broadcast on the BBC Home Service in August 1957.

SUN 09:00 Just William - Live! (b01pfrrc)
Series 3

William Holds the Stage

Last May, as part of Winchester's Best of British Festival in celebration of the Jubilee, Martin Jarvis performed the first of two of Richmal Crompton's comic classics, live on-stage.

In William Holds the Stage, when an old boy of the school gives a lecture on Hamlet, William gets a somewhat confused idea that Shakespeare's plays were written by a man called Ham, and that Shakespeare poisoned Ham, and stole the plays and pretended he had written them. Then a man called Bacon got involved and possibly someone called Eggs as well.

When it's announced that the class will perform a scene from Hamlet in front of a live audience, William decides that, despite being cast as an attendant, he'd prefer to play the leading role himself. But things don't go entirely to plan.

A packed house at the Theatre Royal rocks with laughter as Jarvis performs William's hilariously inventive version of Shakespeare's masterpiece. Just William as 'stand-up'.

Performed by Martin Jarvis
Director: Rosalind Ayres.

Series 2

They Came To Test Our Brains!

A pub quiz and a talking yam spell disaster for Brian when he accidentally discovers his IQ. Oh - and that's what Archer's lungs look like. Thank you Lillian.

The return of the hit sitcom starring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Vicki Pepperdine ("Getting On") set on a shiny new planet.

Welcome to the colony. We're aware that, having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.

Personnel:
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst), is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.

Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

Written by Phil Whelans
Produced and Directed by David Tyler.

MON 11:15 Loose Ends (b04c9kys)
Nikki Bedi, Kevin Eldon, Julian Ovenden, Jon Culshaw, Louise Wener, Arthur Smith, Slow Club, Samantha Crain

Nikki's aboard the Big Train with comedy actor Kevin Eldon, whose book 'My Prefect Cousin' charts the rollercoaster ride of cousin Paul Hamilton's life dedicated to verse.

Former Sleeper front woman Louise Wener tells Nikki about channelling her experience of the music industry into Radio 4 drama series 'Queens of Noise'. It tells the story of Velveteens, an all-girl band desperate to make it in the days before the digital revolution changed the music business forever.

Arthur Smith meets Tony Blair and Obi-Wan Kenobi...or, more accurately, impressionist Jon Culshaw, back on Radio 4's 'Dead Ringers' with a new cast of characters. No one's safe from the merciless parodies, as the show takes down every programme, institution and politician we hold dear.

Julian Ovenden takes a break from playing aristocrat Charles Blake in 'Downton Abbey' to star in 'My Night With Reg'; a funny and bittersweet comedy, set in the summer of 1985 against the backdrop of the mounting AIDS crisis.

With music from Slow Club, who perform 'The Pieces' from their album 'Complete Surrender' and Samantha Crain who plays 'For The Miner' from her album 'Kid Face'

Producer: Sukey Firth.

Rugby's Big Bang

Clare Balding explores why Rugby Union tried to stand firm against the encroaching tide of professionalism and in August 1995, lost.
One by one the old bastions of the sporting gentleman had fallen in the 1960s and 1970s. Cricket, tennis and athletics had all abandoned the Victorian distinction between amateurs and professionals. The word 'amateur' had almost become an insult. But of all the major sports, only one continued to uphold the banner - rugby union. It had introduced strict amateur rules into the game in 1886 and ever since had been determined to uphold them. Prof Tony Collins explains that when the Thatcher era did away with the old school tie mentality and money became an acceptable topic of conversation there was only one way rugby could go.

Magical Mister Murgatroyd

The hit Radio 4 series 'Fags, Mags & Bags' returns with a 4th series with more shop based shenanigans and over the counter philosophy, courtesy of Ramesh Mahju and his trusty sidekick Dave.

Written by and starring Donald McLeary and Sanjeev Kohli. 'Fags, Mags & Bags' has proved a hit with the Radio 4 audience with the show also collecting a Sony nomination and a Writers' Guild award in 2008. This brand new series sees a crop of new shop regulars, and some guest appearances along the way from the likes of Mina Anwar and Kevin Eldon.

In this episode Alok announces his sudden engagement to Siddiqua, the daughter of the local Pennywise empire and shop rival to Ramesh. So is it love that is driving Alok, or the promise of a gadget filled backshop?

So join the staff of 'Fags, Mags and Bags' in their tireless quest to bring nice-price custard creams and cans of coke with Arabic writing on them to an ungrateful nation. Ramesh Mahju has built it up over the course of 30 years, and is a firmly entrenched feature of the local area. Ramesh loves the art of the 'shop'.

However; he does apply the 'low return' rules of the shop to all other aspects of his life. Ramesh is ably assisted by his shop sidekick Dave, a forty-something underachiever who shares Ramesh's love of the art of shopkeeping, even if he is treated like a slave.

Then of course there are Ramesh's sons Sanjay and Alok, both surly and not particularly keen on the old school approach to shopkeeping, but natural successors to the business, and Ramesh is keen to pass all his worldly wisdom onto them whether they like it or not!

Leee John of Imagination

Aspiring singer/songwriter John Shuttleworth has been posting audio cassettes of his "finest songs to date" to pop stars throughout the land, in the hope that someone would record his material. But all to no avail.

However, the BBC has very kindly given John a series and asked him to invite pop stars to bring their music to his Sheffield home. So it is that Chas and Dave, Heaven 17, Toyah Willcox and Leee John find themselves in John's lounge having tea with wife Mary, being flirted with by Mary's friend Joan and hassled by John's agent Ken Worthington, as they try and perform not only one their greatest hits but more importantly, one of John's.

It's the last show in the series this week but John is feeling a little stressed despite the fact all the jingles are recorded. John's final guest is Leee John from Imagination who's a very busy man involved with charity work, singing, acting and making a documentary - and John is worried that Leee is doing too much and should take things a bit easy. Maybe they could take a trip to the reservoir to check the levels as that's a very relaxing thing to do?

But Leee has been working since the age of 13 and is still full of energy so he's ready to sing one of John's songs, and indeed one of his own. As Leee prepares to sing Body Talk, John settles down to listen and by the end of it feels quite relaxed. But things get tense once more as Ken tries one last desperate attempt to woo a star to his stable. Will Leee be interested? And will Ken finally get to present the item Ken in the Konservatory?

So Wrong It's Right

Stephen Fry explores the highways and byways of the English language.

Stephen examines how 'wrong' English can become right English. For example, nowadays, more people use the word 'wireless' in a computer context than in a radio one. With help from a lexicographer, an educationalist, a Times sub-editor and a judge, Stephen examines the way in which usage changes language.

He applauds the council leader who claimed the services provided by her local authority should be seen as strawberry-flavoured and castigates attempts at banning government jargon like step change and synergy. Banning words is fruitless; he favours blue sky thinking, and strawberry flavouring.
