Producer Di Speirs

F M Mayor's masterful novel, The Rector's Daughter, is a rare thing - a novel with a deceptively small canvas, set in the backwaters of a dull East Anglia a century ago, but still as fresh as ever. SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b049xldv)
Boy, Oh Boy, He's Going Down

Sean Street examines those moments where Radio forgets itself, when laughter, alcohol or sheer emotion well up.

Traditionally the wireless has been somewhat formal, but occasionally reporters have been overwhelmed by what they're witnessing, contributors so passionate in argument and commentators overcome by mirth - or drink - that the conventions are dropped.

Then communication comes pure, direct and unselfconscious: a Battle of Britain dogfight sounds like sport, sport like war, a naval fleet becomes fairyland, the author of a fairytale about rabbits attacks another guest.

Hear the moments when Radio reveals far more than what is said.

Producer: Julian May

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2000.

SAT 18:00 Saturday Drama (b016k89p)
Something Wicked This Way Comes

Something Wicked This Way Comes
By Ray Bradbury
Dramatised by Diana Griffiths

Composer ..... David Paul Jones
Sound ..... Paul Cargill
Produced/Directed by Pauline Harris

Set in 1960's Illinois this gem of modern Gothic literature is the memorable story of two boys, James Nightshade and William Halloway, and the evil that grips their small Midwestern town with the arrival of a "dark carnival" one Autumn midnight. These two innocents, both aged 13, (Will is born one minute before Halloween, and Jim one minute after) save the souls of the town (as well as their own). This is a vivid variation on the eternal theme of the fight between Good and Evil. A thrilling, chilling, richly kaleidoscopic sound world ensues; a shimmering mirror maze that reflects your older or younger self, depending on your desires, and a magic carousel that plays Chopin's Funeral March forwards - with each rotation you gain a year, and rotating backwards - you get younger.

Series 2

Sample of Terror

A sitcom set in a hapless Space Colony.

It's Day 30 on the colony and Brian has to win the Tour De France to save the contents of Lillian's freezer. Meanwhile, Mason discovers that a nuclear core is not the best venue for some role-play.

The return of the hit sitcom starring Nicholas Lyndhurst and Vicki Pepperdine ("Getting On") set on a shiny new planet.

Welcome to the colony. We're aware that, having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.

Personnel:
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst), is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.

Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

Vegetarian in France

Michele Roberts writes enticingly about France, and equally enticingly about food, and this story from her newly published collection brings two of her favourite subjects together in a tongue-in-cheek cautionary tale about the dangers of being fussy about food in a country that regards vegetarians with the scorn reserved for a lesser species. It was not easy, being a vegetarian in France, Larry found, when he and his wife Nicolette finally settled there in their retirement. Their hunting, fishing, butchering, gutting, stuffing and pickling neighbours tried to understand, but their sympathies were all with Nicolette. Larry didn't stand a chance. Clare hears about the violent clashes that always ensued when these two teams met, finally leading to the disbandment of Celtic. Series 1

Episode 2

One of those parties that starts out as a great way to get to know each other better, but promptly gets taken over by fake tans, jerk chicken, insomniac parents and berets.

Hard To Tell is a four part relationship comedy by Jonny Sweet (Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2009). It conjures up characters depicting every relationship from father and daughter to the mirror in the bathroom and the feller hiding at a party; from the stalker and the stalked to dog owners and their dogs; and from lifelong friends to long term partners and their dearly departed.

The series revolves around Tom Sheffield (played by Jonny himself), his immediate family (Getting On's Vicki Pepperdine, The Thick Of It's Alex MacQueen and Not Going Out's Katy Wix), and Tom's longed-for-and-lusted-after new girlfriend Ellen (played by Charlotte Ritchie), her best friend Hermione (Him & Her's Sarah Solemani) and Ellen's zealously protective father (Simon Greenall).

Tim Key and Tom Basden both make deliciously awkward cameo appearances.

Recorded on location, Hard To Tell's naturalistic, contemporary and conversational style brings new meaning to pub toilets, themed parties, early morning phone calls and Christmas Editions of Jonathan Creek.

Producer: Lucy Armitage
A Tiger Aspect production for BBC Radio 4.

So it is that Chas and Dave, Heaven 17, Toyah Wilcox and Leee John find themselves in John's lounge having tea with wife Mary, being flirted with by Mary's friend Joan and hassled by John's agent Ken Worthington, as they try and perform not only one their greatest hits but more importantly, one of John's.

This week John is in a fluster as Kirsty the scottie dog has eaten the tape with all John's jingles on it - so he's having to play them all live and is worried they may all go wrong.

Mary has been complaining that the music is too loud - although she doesn't seem to mind when Heaven 17 are playing. And is that a lemon drizzle cake she's brought for them?

As Glenn and Martyn settle down to play one of their songs, Come Live With Me, Joan Chitty arrives and quite likes the sound of the title. So while John is fretting that the maths in the song lyrics are all wrong, Joan asks if the boys can give her a massage to ease her sciatica.
All this, along with Tina Charles telling John how to sing very high in Top Tips on the Telephone, leaves time short for Ken in the Konservatory - will it happen?

Written and Performed by Graham Fellows with special guests Heaven 17 and Tina Charles.

Producer: Dawn Ellis
A Chic Ken production for BBC Radio 4.

She starts in the Hall of Remembrance in front of John Singer Sargent's, Gassed, an oil painting more than twenty feet long, depicting the aftermath of a mustard gas attack during the First World War, with a line of wounded soldiers walking towards a dressing station. Yet in the background there are groups of men playing football. As Prof. Tony Collins of De Montfort University explains, sport became an essential part of army life, alleviating the boredom and the terror, by 1916 there was a football ground in each brigade area of the Western Front.
During the Second World War, Prof Tony Mason explains the importance of sport to those captured and detained in German prisoner of war camps, with football, in particular being used as a way of providing entertainment for troops overseas.
