SAT 00:45 Book of the Week (b01ns1k9)
Michael Holroyd - On Wheels

Episode 5

Michael Holroyd confronts an army of automobiles in this charming memoir. Weaving together personal stories and historical anecdote, he traces his relationship with cars through a lifetime of biography.

Learning to drive was no easy matter for Michael. The lessons required military precision when practising how to get in and out of his car correctly. His biographical subjects also had their difficulties: Bernard Shaw drove with reckless gusto when overtaking his eightieth year; Vita Sackville-West's car became a chamber for sudden romantic assignations and getaways; Augustus John and his family careered through vulnerable villages as the poor vehicle, piled high with bohemian friends, stuttered and jerked along in first gear.

Wry, thoughtful and very funny, On Wheels is an elegy to the glamour of the car. Subtle and perceptive, Michael Holroyd finds surprising ways to understand the past and challenge our view of the future.

Episode 5 of 5
In the final episode, Michael Holroyd describes playwright Bernard Shaw's enthusiastic, if cavalier, approach to driving - only thwarted by the outbreak of world war. For Michael Holroyd, however, it was the satnav that did for him.

SAT 08:00 Archive on 4 (b01lz7yk)
Anthony Burgess: A Clockwork Archive

Anthony Burgess is best known as the author of A Clockwork Orange, published 50 years ago.

Burgess was born in 1917 in one of the poorest areas of North Manchester. It was entirely unpredictable that such a major literary figure and polymath would spring from such a humble background. He remained in Manchester until he graduated from the University, but never went back to live there and was careful to disguise his Northern accent.

Paul Morley - a fellow Northern exile - visits some of the key landmarks of Burgess's early life - Xaverian College where he was taught by strict Catholics from the Xaverian Brothers; the Free Trade Hall where he heard the Hallé Orchestra; Central Library where he began a lifelong process of self-education.

Paul also considers Burgess's continuing passion for writing classical music; his first creative ambition was to be a composer. He wrote over 200 pieces of pieces of classical music, including full-length symphonies and a ballet. Very little of his music was performed during his lifetime, but it is now attracting interest from musicians and academics.

Burgess's legacy includes not only 33 published novels, two autobiographies and a large amount of journalism but a previously unheard archive of about 800 audio cassettes and home movies. Paul Morley visits The International Anthony Burgess Foundation in Manchester, which is cataloguing this rich, diverse and remarkable archive.

Contributors include Dr Andrew Biswell, biographer of Anthony Burgess and Director of The International Anthony Burgess Foundation; Paul Philips, author of a book about Burgess's music; and Dr Kevin Malone an expert on the music Burgess himself wrote for his own dramatized version of A Clockwork Orange.

SAT 09:00 Double or Nothing: Partnerships in Radio Comedy (b007wdvv)
Hugh Dennis sets out to prove that two of anything is fun - and that radio comedy is especially good served in pairs. He presents a selection of six comic duos: Little Britain (March 2002), Much Binding in the Marsh (Feb 1949), In All Directions (Oct 1952), Absolute Power (Jan 2002), Armstrong and Miller (March 1998), and Laurel and Hardy On Tour (2006).

Over three hours, you'll get a firm flavour of the dynamics of double acts in action. Double acts aren't always performers - writing partnerships are just as important, and sometimes it's a couple of characters which make great comedic chemistry.

An alumni of Cambridge footlights, Hugh Dennis is perhaps best known for his own association with Steve Punt - both hosts of BBC Radio 4's long-running comedy hit The Now Show, as well as part of the legendary line-up in 4 Extra's archive stable-mate The Mary Whitehouse Experience. Hugh is also star of Andy Hamilton's hit BBC One TV sitcom Outnumbered.

The British Rock and Rollers

Within a matter of months Tommy Steele's 'Rock With The Caveman,' generally considered to be the first rock and roll song to have originated in the UK, had reached number 13 in the charts. The rock and roll revolution was under way.

Tommy Steele was discovered in the 2i's Coffee Bar in Old Compton Street in Soho, as was Cliff Richard and The Shadows, Mickie Most, Joe Brown, Vince Taylor and Terry Dene amongst many others. The person who discovered him, Larry Parnes, was the UK's first pop manager.

In this programme, Sue MacGregor will be discussing those days with Bruce Welch from The Shadows, Terry Dene, Vince Eager and Marty Wilde who all signed up with Larry Parnes and Clem Cattini, who played drums with all of them.

Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.

All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts to help brings us closer to understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.
