SAT 17:45 Don't Start (b01n1qyz)
Series 2

The Bathroom

Kim calls Neil into the bathroom for an impromptu debate about shaving, the Krankies and Phantom of the Opera - but to what end?

What do long term partners really argue about? Sharp new comedy from Frank Skinner returns for a second series. Starring Frank Skinner and Katherine Parkinson.

The first series of Don't Start met with instant critical and audience acclaim:
"That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that would be lost in his stand-up routines". Jane Anderson, Radio Times

"Writing and starring in the four-parter Don't Start (Radio 4) Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly precise dissection of a relationship". Daily Mail

.. "a lesson in relationship ping-pong" .. - Miranda Sawyer, The Observer
Series 2 follows hard on its heels. Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint - the Krankies, toenail trimming and semantics. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references (the Old Testament, Jack Spratt and the first Mrs Rochester, to name a few) and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an unmistakable tenderness".

Frank says:
"Having established, in the first series, that Neil and Kim are a childless academic couple who, during their numerous arguments, luxuriate in their own, and each other's, learning and wit, I've tried, in the second series, to dig a little deeper into their relationship. Love and affection, occasionally splutter into view, like a Higgs boson in a big tunnel-thing, but can such emotions ever prevail in a relationship where the couple prefers to wear their brains, rather than their hearts, on their sleeves? Is that too much offal imagery?"

Directed and Produced by Polly Thomas
Executive Producer: Jon Thoday
An Avalon production for BBC Radio 4.

This didn't stop Rupert Murdoch giving it his full backing, or Sir Trevor Roper endorsing it - at least at first. Notorious forger Kujau managed to pull the wool over the eyes of the Western media, even though the factual basis for his hoax withstood even less scrutiny than the so-called Mussolini Diaries of previous years.

Even controversial historian David Irving was not taken in - and along with journalist Gerd Hiedemann, Magnus Linklater and Philip Knightley he discusses how the 'coup' was acquired and how it fell apart. From September 2008.

Tangled Web

Ronnie Corbett reunites with the writers of his hit sitcom Sorry, Ian Davidson and Peter Vincent. Sorry ran for seven series on BBC 1 and was number one in the UK ratings.

In the second series of their Radio 4 sitcom, Ronnie plays Sandy Hopper, who is growing old happily along with his dog Henry. His grown up children - both married to people Sandy doesn't approve of at all - would like him to move out of the family home so they can get their hands on their money earlier. But Sandy's not having this. He's not moving until the dog dies. And not just that, how can he move if he's got a lodger? His daughter is convinced that his too attractive lodger Dolores (Liza Tarbuck) is after Sandy and his money.

Luckily Sandy has three grandchildren and sometimes a friendly word, a kindly hand on the shoulder can really help a Granddad in the twenty-first century. Man and dog together face a complicated world. There's every chance they'll make it more so.

Episode Four- Tangled Web
Whenever people tell porkies, they seem to come to Sandy for help. Being a spare man and his own master - he can provide the alibi or hide the goods. However, multi-tasking was never his strongpoint even when he was Manager (Acting) of the Five Feathers, Frinton. Deceiving needs practice and not on the job, either.

Michael Holroyd - On Wheels

Episode 1

Michael Holroyd confronts an army of automobiles in this charming memoir. Weaving together personal stories and historical anecdote, he traces his relationship with cars through a lifetime of biography.

Learning to drive was no easy matter for Michael. The lessons required military precision when practising how to get in and out of his car correctly. His biographical subjects also had their difficulties: Bernard Shaw drove with reckless gusto when overtaking his eightieth year; Vita Sackville-West's car became a chamber for sudden romantic assignations and getaways; Augustus John and his family careered through vulnerable villages as the poor vehicle, piled high with bohemian friends, stuttered and jerked along in first gear.

Wry, thoughtful and very funny, On Wheels is an elegy to the glamour of the car. Subtle and perceptive, Michael Holroyd finds surprising ways to understand the past and challenge our view of the future.

Rhys Thomas talks to Simon Day

Chain Reaction is Radio 4's tag-team interview show. Each week, a figure from the world of entertainment chooses another to interview; the next week, the interviewee turns interviewer, and they in turn pass the baton on to someone else - creating a 'chain' throughout the series.

This seventh series starts with Rhys Thomas - perhaps better-known to the Radio 4 audience as Gary Bellamy, host of Down The Line - interviewing the actor Simon Day. They have worked together since The Fast Show, when Simon was an established member of the team, and Rhys was a supporting cast member; Simon also appeared in the sitcom Swiss Toni, which Rhys co-wrote, and provides voices for Down The Line. But Simon, sixteen years older than Rhys, came to prominence in a very different comedy culture to Rhys. He also came from a live background, as opposed to Rhys's first break working as a runner on Shooting Stars; he also waited until this year to have his own show (Radio 4's The Simon Day Show), whereas Rhys had written two series of his own sitcom by the age of 21. All these differences, and all this common ground, makes for an absorbing and hilarious interview.

Michael Holroyd - On Wheels

Episode 3

Episode 3 of 5
In the third episode of On Wheels Michael Holroyd describes the pleasures of driving a Daf, and the danger of doing so in Northern Ireland. And he gives us a taste of playwright Bernard Shaw's rather individualistic approach to driving.

He takes as his focus four commodities which are so intrinsic to our lives they have an almost elemental significance - land, gold, oil and grain. Yet, despite the fact we encounter them everywhere we look, very few people have been able to build a fortune on them.

All that's about to change as, Simon enlists help from the experts to help brings us closer to understanding of how global economic forces have a far-reaching and often surprising impact on our lives.
