SAT 07:30 Grasshead Racers (b00x58v4)
To honour the great motor racing commentator, Murray Walker, who died last month aged 97, Radio 4 is repeating the programme that, in 2004 , tempted him out of retirement - Grasshead Racers.

In his long career as a commentator Murray Walker covered all manner of motor sports, so when radio producer Julian May told him about lawn mower racing he was intrigued. He agreed to present a programme exploring it, on one condition - that he would not have to commentate.

At the Le Mans (if he’s not mistaken) of the lawn mower racing world - a field dotted with straw bales in Kingston Maurwood, Dorset, Murray spends a summer's day with members of the British Lawn Mower Racing Association and discovers this is a sport with wide appeal. Sir Stirling Moss reveals he was a keen lawn mower racer; Oliver Reed was as enthusiastic, but less controlled. Murray meets one competitor with more world championships than Michael Schumacher.

So impressed is Murray by these grasshead racers and their diligently fettled machines that he can't resist picking up the announcer's microphone and painting the scene in words, commentating one last time on this most spectacular and democratic motor sport.

Lawnmowers, Murray reveals, have a surprisingly sexy provenance: Mr Benz of Mercedes launched his career making lawn mowers; Royal Enfield, more famous for their guns and motorcycles, made mowers. So did Rolls Royce!

But the real enthusiasts, like Bugatti owners, like to mount their chariots and tank them. Murray Walker joins them, enjoying the heady aroma of 2 stroke and grass clippings as, lap after lap, the grasshead racers gun their classic mowers over Kingston Maurwood's greensward at speeds approaching a dizzying 35mph.

Presenter: Murray Walker
Producer: Julian May

I'm in Charge

The London Palladium has always occupied a unique place in Bruce Forsyth's heart: "No theatre on this earth has ever superseded the Palladium in my affections; it's just so special . . . as intimate as a family's front room."

It was one night at the Palladium back in 1958 when Bruce Forsyth's career changed forever - a celebrated appearance with the late comedian Dickie Henderson led to Bruce being offered the highly sought after job of compère of the weekly TV variety show, 'Sunday Night at the London Palladium'. Together, the show and its new presenter, turned out to be a sensation - the highlight of the week for Britain's viewing millions and the topic of conversation in factories, offices, schools and shop floors on Monday mornings.

On the eve of the Theatre's 100th birthday - the Palladium first opened its doors to the public on Boxing Day 1919 - Bruce takes Paul Jackson on a tour of the theatre that every star of their day aspired to performing in. If you made the Palladium, you had it made. From Ella Sheilds and Dan Leno to the golden era of American stars like Frank Sinatra and Danny Kaye who had the crowds queuing round the block; from George V & George VI, to Pinky & Perky and Mocombe & Wise, the London Palladium has played host to them all.

Producer: Paul Kobrak.

Catchment if You Can

Ronnie Corbett reunites with the writers of his hit sitcom Sorry, Ian Davidson and Peter Vincent. Sorry ran for seven series on BBC 1 and was number one in the UK ratings.

In the second series of their Radio 4 sitcom, Ronnie plays Sandy Hopper, who is growing old happily along with his dog Henry. His grown up children - both married to people Sandy doesn't approve of at all - would like him to move out of the family home so they can get their hands on their money earlier.

But Sandy's not having this. He's not moving until the dog dies. And not just that, how can he move if he's got a lodger? His daughter is convinced that his too attractive lodger Dolores (Liza Tarbuck) is after Sandy and his money.

Luckily, Sandy has three grandchildren and sometimes a friendly word, a kindly hand on the shoulder can really help a Granddad in the twenty-first century. Man and dog together face a complicated world. There's every chance they'll make it more so.

Sandy's quiet life is shattered by the need to make himself scarce while his daughter Ellie and his son-in-law Blake pretend, for reasons of social mobility and educational opportunity, that his address is their address. Hiding in the shed doesn't seem right for someone who dreams of being a hero. Not in the world's eye, perhaps - but certainly in his grandson Tyson's.

Liza Tarbuck ...... Dolores
Sally Grace ..... Mrs Pompom
Tilly Vosburgh ..... Ellie

TUE 22:30 The Music Teacher (b00s3h48)
Series 1

Episode 1

An aural feast of a musical comedy written by and starring Richie Webb as multi-instrumentalist music teacher Nigel Penny.

Shut away in a windowless practice room in a regional arts centre, music teacher Nigel endures a succession of pupils: the middle-aged bachelor with his homemade Moog; the six year old trombonist who's arms aren't quite long enough; and the female student who's forever in a state of tearful crisis and never gets her oboe out - all these and more enter Nigel's airless little room.

Nigel also has to contend with the panicked manager of Letchington Arts Centre, Belinda, who's continued struggle to keep the Arts Centre a going concern impacts bizarrely on Nigel's world.

Nigel suffers from crippling stage fright. He hasn't performed in public for years and frankly, he's not looking to rectify this. Belinda, however, is. And not because she appreciates his rare talent, but mainly because she always seems to have some act that's cancelled and needs Nigel to fill in.

We are privy to Nigel's thoughts: conversations and musical performances are littered with the 'real' Nigel's asides, which flit from commenting on what is happening to wandering off on a tangent to becoming consumed with the prospect of performing again.

Musically, though, the show sounds like no other: Accordians; singing dogs; death metal guitar - we hear them all. And the entire show takes place in Nigel's tiny, windowless room. The claustrophobia is audible.

This opening episode sees Nigel having to contend with an atonal Barbershop Quartet and a depressed orchestral timpanist - whilst Belinda is desperate to fill the slot vacated by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

Nigel Penny ...... Richie Webb
Belinda ...... Vicki Pepperdine
Other roles: Dave Lamb, Jim North and Jess Robinson.

In arguing against the belief that 'an artist who doesn't make his own work is a fraud' Julia Hartley-Brewer points out that nobody ever complained that Sir Christopher Wren was never seen up a ladder laying the bricks of St Paul's Cathedral.

And all three guests dismiss the idea that spending 4.4 billion on the Large Hadron Collider is a waste of money - if only on the grounds that it may prove useful for smashing a few political leaders' heads together.

The first series of Don't Start met with instant critical and audience acclaim: "That he can deliver such a heavy premise for a series with such a lightness of touch is testament to his skills as a writer and, given that the protagonists are both bookworms, he's also permitted to use a flourish of fine words that would be lost in his stand-up routines". Jane Anderson, Radio Times.

"Writing and starring in the four-parter Don't Start (Radio 4) Frank Skinner gives full rein to his sharp but splenetic comedy. He and his co-star Katherine Parkinson play a bickering couple exchanging acerbic ripostes in a cruelly precise dissection of a relationship". Daily Mail

... "a lesson in relationship ping-pong" - Miranda Sawyer, The Observer.
Series 2 follows hard on its heels. Well observed, clever and funny, Don't Start is a scripted comedy with a deceptively simple premise - an argument. Each week, our couple fall out over another apparently trivial flashpoint - the Krankies, toenail trimming and semantics. Each week, the stakes mount as Neil and Kim battle with words. But these are no ordinary arguments. The two outdo each other with increasingly absurd images, unexpected literary references (the Old Testament, Jack Spratt and the first Mrs Rochester, to name a few) and razor sharp analysis of their beloved's weaknesses. Underneath the cutting wit, however, there is an unmistakable tenderness".

Frank says:
"Having established in the first series that Neil and Kim are a childless academic couple who during their numerous arguments, luxuriate in their own and each other's learning and wit, I've tried in the second series to dig a little deeper into their relationship. Love and affection occasionally splutter into view, like a Higgs boson in a big tunnel-thing, but can such emotions ever prevail in a relationship where the couple prefers to wear their brains, rather than their hearts, on their sleeves? Is that too much offal imagery?

Episode 1: The Notebook
Frank's apparently innocent discovery of an old notebook strangely rekindles Kim's former enthusiasm for Frisbee throwing.
