SUN 07:15 Lady Curzon and a Pineapple (b00cm6ww)
Ian Peacock picks up his spoon and delves into the history of "The King of Fruits".

The "most wanted" additions to any early 20th-century dinner party were said to have been Lady Curzon and a Pineapple. The former for her wit and charms, the latter for its taste, of course, but also for its status as a symbol of wealth and exoticism. Pineapples are believed to have been discovered by Columbus in 1493, and by the 18th century they were so sought-after that many wealthy landowners were attempting to grow them here in Britain. Some were successfully grown as far north as Falkirk in Central Scotland.

Lucinda Lambton discusses pineapple representation in architecture here and abroad, while Ian meets a young pineapple grower and tastes a one cooked to an ancient recipe on a spit over an open fire.

SUN 11:00 Ena (b00mgx85)
Mark Radcliffe explores the life of Violet Carson, the actress who played Ena Sharples, the Victorian relic who dominated Coronation Street in its' golden age of the 1960s.

A talented classical pianist and established BBC radio star, Carson was branching out into Shakespearian roles when the call from Granada came to play the hatchet-faced harridan in a hairnet. The genteel Violet Carson became overshadowed by her character and claimed that Ena ultimately destroyed her.

But she left a rich legacy; Ena Sharples was television's prototype battleaxe and epitomised a particular kind of woman who dominated life in northern working-class communities. Mark Radcliffe came across women like Ena in the brick mill terraces of Bolton where his grandparents lived.

By day, Ena would be polishing the woodwork in the Glad Tidings Mission Hall, where she was caretaker; by night, she was installed in the snug of the Rovers Return with her two cronies, Martha Longhurst and Minnie Caldwell, gossiping over a milk stout and never taking their hats and coats off, even when they planned to stay all evening.

Featuring contributions from Tony Warren, creator of Coronation Street and of Ena Sharples. Geoffrey Wheeler, who worked with Violet Carson at the BBC, traces the quickfire delivery of Ena back to the northern music hall tradition. Melvyn Bragg talks about how Ena Sharples reflected life in the black and white world of the north in the 1950s. Scriptwriter Adele Rose discusses the pivotal relationship between Ena Sharples and her bete noir, Elsie Tanner.

The programme also includes archive of Violet Carson, reflecting on the mixed blessing that playing Ena Sharples was to her career and to her life.

The Same Hymn Sheet

Ronnie Corbett reunites with the writers of his hit sitcom Sorry, Ian Davidson and Peter Vincent. Sorry ran for seven series on BBC 1 and was number one in the UK ratings.

In this Radio 4 sitcom, Ronnie plays Sandy Hopper, who is growing old happily along with his dog Henry. His grown up children 'both married to people Sandy doesn't approve of at all' would like him to move out of the family home so they can get their hands on their money earlier. But Sandy's not having this. He's not moving until the dog dies. And not just that, how can he move if he's got a lodger? His daughter is convinced that his too attractive lodger Dolores (Liza Tarbuck) is after Sandy and his money.

Luckily, Sandy has three grandchildren and sometimes a friendly word, a kindly hand on the shoulder can really help a Granddad in the twenty-first century. Man and dog together face a complicated world. There's every chance they'll make it more so.

In this first episode, The Same Hymn Sheet, Sandy wants to protect his grandson Tyson from the harsh training programme and insane sporting ambitions of Tyson's father Blake, and sets out to torpedo Blake's touchline plans. The story takes Sandy all the way to the bank. Unfortunately, it's the bottle bank.

Writers Lucy Caldwell, Heidi Regan and Jessica Ransom, take us behind the scenes for an alternative look at some great historical moments through the eyes of some unexpected - and, until now - overlooked witnesses who were there too!

This week our afternoon readings take a look at some momentous moments in history from the perspective of those on the sidelines. Each afternoon some unexpected witnesses who were 'there too' tell us their stories and give us an insight into the happenings that didn't make it into the history books.
Today's 'I Was There Too!' reading takes us back to events in fifteenth century France and a most unusual case of sibling rivalry, as Corinne Kempa reads 'Maiden, Mother, Spinster, Saint' by Lucy Caldwell, producer Heather Larmour.

MON 11:15 Loose Ends (b03s65n4)
Dan Croll, Lisa Dwan, Wayne Hemingway, Isaac Julien, Michael Paterniti, Peggy Sue

This week Clive Anderson asks designer and entrepreneur Wayne Hemingway about Being a Man. He's not being impertinent - it's the title of a weekend-long series of events at London's Southbank Centre, at which Wayne is speaking. What inspired him to take part?

Actress Lisa Dwan tells Clive about following in the footsteps of someone's muse - in this case Billie Whitelaw. Lisa's performance in a trilogy of Samuel Beckett's work quickly sold out at London's Royal Court Theatre, and has now transferred to the Duchess Theatre.

Clive talks to journalist and author Michael Paterniti about his latest book 'The Telling Room' based on Michael's experiences in a small Spanish village. He was captivated by the story of a wonderous cheese - one bite could conjure long-lost memories - but, Michael was told, things went horribly sour.

Nikki Bedi asks installation artist Isaac Julien about his latest work: 'Playtime' - set across three cities defined by their relationship to capital - London, Reykjavik and Dubai. What links this to Julien's previous work 'Ten Thousand Waves', a nine-screen film installation, inspired by the 2004 Morecambe Bay cockle-pickers tragedy?

Music from Peggy Sue who perform 'Longest Day Of The Year Blues' from their forthcoming album 'Choir of Echoes', and from Dan Croll who performs 'Home'.

Series 5

St Davids

Mark Steel returns to Radio 4 for a fifth series of the award winning show that travels around the country, researching the history, heritage and culture of six towns that have nothing in common but their uniqueness, and does a bespoke evening of comedy in each one.

As every high street slowly morphs into a replica of the next, Mark Steel's in Town celebrates the parochial, the local and the unusual. From Corby's rivalry with Kettering to the word you can't say in Portland, the show has taken in the idiosyncrasies of towns up and down the country, from Kirkwall to Penzance, from Holyhead to Bungay.

This edition comes from St Davids, Pembrokeshire, which is technically a city - with the emphasis on the technically. He discusses lifeboats, art and wildlife, and discovers that in this sleepy coastal community, they are sometimes very rude but sometimes very, very friendly. Almost too friendly. But only if you're into that sort of thing. From January 2014.

Producer ... Ed Morrish.

OK, it's a new show filled with sketches written and performed by John Finnemore, but now no longer arranged in strict order of funniness. Also, he's cut the sketch that would have gone first.

In this third edition, the show visits some documentary-makers, has a big debate, and then treats itself to a little trophy.
