Justin Butcher - The Patience of Mr Job

Mr Kismet, from the World Development Agency, has sent a letter offering rich rewards if the region sells its timber and moves to cut-flower production. Mr Job obeys the WDA scrupulously, even when the instructions prove extremely inconvenient, but as they wait for Mr Kismet's arrival, a series of disasters strike. A satire about globalisation and climate change.

This is the Job story from the Old Testament with a new twist - a dark comedy set in Africa about the topical subjects of globalisation and climate change. We are in the fictional West African country of Ghanzania. Mr Job (Jude Akuwudike) is the unofficial head of his village. He trusts the West's promises of rich rewards if they give up traditional farming in favour of large scale production of cash crops. Mrs Job (Adjoa Andoh) is less certain. So the villagers cut down their forests, sell their goats and pour chemicals into the soil, but their children get sick, the hill slides into the lake, a hurricane floods the coast, and Mr Job is left clinging to the roof of his house. As the waters close over his head he hears the voice of God. Will his patience be rewarded?

Justin Butcher wrote the brilliant 'Seven White Masks of Scaramouche Jones' for Radio 4 which became an award-winning one-man show for Pete Postlethwaite. SAT 07:30 Great Lives (b00txhlb)
Series 22

Walt Disney

Satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe nominates Walt Disney.

Gerald Scarfe spent much of his childhood in his sick bed, so it's not surprising that Disney cartoons and feature films meant so much to him. He can still recall the thrill at the prospect of seeing Pinocchio at the cinema, and then the agony of being lead away again in the rain because the tickets were too expensive.

Walt Disney came from a working family. His god-fearing father Elias, said by one writer to have 'hated Capital, and favoured Labour, but really needed to make a buck', found work where he could. So Walt lived a peripatetic childhood, and sought solace in drawing and play acting. Hard times early on did not make Walt frugal with money in adulthood, and despite the huge successes of the golden era of Disney, it was only with the opening of Disneyland that Walt attained any substantial personal wealth.

You don't have to look far to find myth surrounding Walt Disney. Even after his death, rumours that his body had been cryogenically frozen spread so widely that they soon slipped into folklore. He had actually been cremated, but the readiness with which the cryogenic claim was accepted perhaps bears witness to a man who was terrified of dying, who believed in the white hope of technology and who, some might say, had been searching all his life for an escape into an immortal, fairytale world.

Matthew Parris, Gerald Scarfe and guest experts Brian Sibley and Richard Williams, creator of Roger Rabbit, discuss the life of a complex cultural icon. A man who was seemingly unpretentious, and did not fit the image of movie mogul with his scruffy tweed jacket and awkward demeanour, yet a man who was accused of being a tyrannical egomaniac. The son of a socialist who ended up naming names at the House of Un- American Activities committee. Above all else perhaps though, they discuss the life of a man who strove tirelessly for perfection and who changed the cultural landscape of a little boy called Gerald, and arguably of the world, for ever.

Scarfe himself is best known for his classic images lampooning the great and the good of politics, and also in his iconic animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall. He reveals in this programme that he also spent time working on the Disney production Hercules.

The producer is Miles Warde.

MON 09:00 Andrew Maxwell's Public Enemies (b007jtr3)
The Food Industry

Andrew Maxwell is one of the UK's most informed and fearless stand ups.

In this series of one-off stand up shows, he uses his trademark intelligence and political incisiveness to dig behind the clichés and assumptions about four possible threats to British society: food, the internet, drugs and Nationalism.

Andrew kicks off with a look at the food industry.

From horseburgers right up to snail ice-cream, it seems like there's something wrong with every rung of the food ladder. But given that food is essential to survival, shouldn't we be clearer about what it is we want from the industry that provides it?

A series showcasing a comedian at the top of his abilities tackling difficult and important 'slow news' topics with a depth and perceptiveness that remains outside the remit of mainstream 'topical' comedy.

Written and performed by Andrew Maxwell

Script edited by Paul Byrne.

MON 10:45 Einstein's Fiddle (b008fcf4)
Physicist Brian Foster explores the role of music in the life of Albert Einstein.

Although best known for his towering scientific achievements, Einstein was a fine amateur violinist and occasionally played in public. Indeed, he once said that he got the most joy in his life from playing the violin. When he was due to receive his Nobel Prize in 1922, he was in Japan, not only meeting other physicists but also giving performancesof the Kreuzer Sonata, one of the most challenging pieces in the repertoire.

Music also played a role in his work as a physicist. He would often break off from a particularly difficult piece of work to play his violin in the hope of seeking inspiration. And he found parallels between the beauty and harmony he saw in scientific laws and the music of composers such as Mozart, which he felt reflected the inner beauty of the universe itself.

WED 07:30 The Stanley Baxter Playhouse (b00tq1vh)
Series 4

The Porter's Story

Written by Rona Munro.

In this first play in Series 4 of The Stanley Baxter Playhouse fellow Scots leading actors Gordon Kennedy, Stuart McQuarrie and Siobhan Redmond join Stanley in a comedy based on Shakespeare's Scottish play, where the porter becomes the hero and invites us to hear his version of the events that led up to the murder of King Duncan; and what just might have happened after it.

We will discover that it was all really Lady Macbeth's fault, for marrying Macbeth and spoiling the porter's long term plans to groom his coarse and unschooled master to be a suave, smooth operator with fine manners and a statesman like approach to politics. His plans are foiled in a series of mishaps which are hilarious and very cunning.

Cast:
Porter ..... Stanley Baxter
Macbeth ...... Gordon Kennedy
Lady Macbeth ...... Siobhan Redmond
Duncan/Nobleman ...... Stuart McQuarrie

Rona Munro is one of Scotland's most highly regarded playwrights, with award winning films [Ken Loach's Lady Bird Lady Bird] and television dramas [Rehab] and her Edinburgh International Festival success The Last Witch to her credit. She is passionate about history and comedy, and The Porter's Story celebrates both of these; a delightful tongue in cheek exposition of events from Scottish history which are still shrouded in mystery; Shakespeare certainly took liberties in his version.

Siobhan Redmond starred in the RSC production of a new play Dunsinane by David Greig, where she played Lady Macbeth. Gordon Kennedy will be known to many for his role as Little John in the BBC TV series Robin Hood.

Producer: Marilyn Imrie
A Catherine Bailey production for BBC Radio 4.

Geoffrey Chaucer - Troilus and Criseyde

Episode 1

Dramatisation of Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde.

One of the great works of English literature, this powerful, compelling story explores love from its first tentative beginnings through to passionate sensuality and eventual tragic disillusionment. Lavinia Greenlaw's new version for radio brings Chaucer's language up-to-date for a modern audience while remaining true to his original poetic intention.

After seeing the beautiful widow Criseyde at the temple in Troy, Troilus falls instantly in love with her. Inexperienced in love, he is unable to act on his feelings and locks himself in his room to compose love songs. Pandarus, worried for his friend, eventually persuades Troilus to tell him why he is so miserable and is delighted to hear that the cause is Troilus' love for his niece Criseyde.

Worried about her reputation, Criseyde is at first reluctant to enter into a relationship with Troilus. After much cajoling and manipulation, she reluctantly comes around to the idea. Pandarus is frustrated that the relationship is moving too slowly and engineers a complex plan to get Criseyde and Troilus in bed together.
