SAT 09:00 4 Extra at the British Seaside (b038xhc6)
Seaside entertainer Tony Lidington takes a trip to Brighton for BBC Radio 4 Extra and reflects how this city has inspired a wealth of seaside memories captured in the BBC Sound Archive.

Tony came to Brighton in the eighties as a student and set up his own Pierrot Troupe The Pierroters named after the rotting West Pier which was the subject of a Kaleidoscope feature made in 1995.

There are first hand memories of what it was like to go on a seaside holiday between the wars in 1984 programme called ‘Sand Between the Toes'.

Tony meets Max Tyler an expert on the Fol De Rols and he and Tony hear them perform in an extraordinary piece of archive from 1937 when four of the shows hundreds of miles apart were brought together live by the magic of wireless.

There are also insights into Brighton's very own Cheeky Chappie as Tony visits a Fish and Chip Shop in Brighton where the Max Miller Society has set up a museum.

‘Casting Shadows' a wonderfully evocative play by Mark Burgess conjures up an imaginary meeting between the actor Laurence Oliver, playwright Terence Rattigan and Brighton's famous seaside entertainer, Max Miller. Roy Hudd headlines as Miller.

Gavin Henderson president of the National Piers Society reveals that seaside Piers were initially places of sophistication, almost the arts centres of their day, and Rachel Clark of the West Pier Trust looks to the future and the plans to create a new vertical Pier on Brighton seafront.

Tony celebrates the Great Days of the West Pier in his 1995 Archive Hour ‘Oh What a Lovely Pier!' with contributions from among others the late Corin Redgrave.

The Coin of Dionysius

Is an old coin real - or a clever fake? An old friend, Louis Carlyle approaches suave sleuth Max Carrados for help. Read by Arthur Darvill ( who played companion Rory Williams to the 11th Doctor Who, Matt Smith).

What Louis doesn't know, is that due to an accident, Max is now blind. But that doesn't stop him from proving, in some style, just how formidable an amateur private detective he could become.

Max Carrados first featured in a series of mystery books in 1914. Carrados also shared top billing alongside Sherlock Holmes in 'The Strand Magazine". The character often boasts how much his blindness means his other senses are heightened.

Ernest Bramah excelled in his detailed writing and uncovering of clues. The beneficiary of a large inheritance from an American relative, Carrados is foremost a gentleman who undertakes sleuthing only as an avocation. Though equipped with a keen observer in the perfect manservant Parkinson, Carrados doesn't just sit around deducing. He makes his own observations with ears, nose and fingertips.

MON 09:00 Paul Sinha's Citizenship Test (b038zf13)
Episode 4

Paul Sinha is proudly British. He also loves a quiz. So you would have thought that the UK Citizenship Test, which newcomers to this country must pass to become citizens, would have been right up his street. But the questions in the 2012 and 2013 Home Office guides seem either bizarrely easy - "Where is Welsh most widely spoken?" - or infuriatingly vague - "What happened in the First World War?".

So Paul has created his own test, to better reflect the things that aspiring migrants should understand before they can call themselves British. In this final episode of the four-part series, he looks who and what Britons consider to be "great", and social cohesion - from what you need to know about weddings and marriage to the 2011 summer riots.

The series intertwines the sort of comedy Paul has become known for on The Now Show, The News Quiz, and Fighting Talk, as well as his own Radio 4 shows The Sinha Test and The Sinha Games, and the command of facts and figures he demonstrates on the ITV quiz show The Chase, with a dash of the patriotism that has seen him banned from the bar at the United Nations.

Written and performed by Paul Sinha.
Producer: Ed Morrish.

Danny Wallace, Will Young, Paul Daniels, Laura Wilson, Miranda Sawyer, Nadine Shah, Jeffrey Lewis and The Rain

Danny talks All That Jazz with singer, actor and Pop Idol Will Young, who's about to make his West End debut and tour the UK as the Emcee in hit musical 'Cabaret'. Set in Berlin's seedy Kit Kat Klub in 1931, nineteen year old cabaret performer Sally Bowles romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them. 'Cabaret' is on tour from 28th August to Sunday 8th December.

Miranda Sawyer talks to alt-folk chanteuse Nadine Shah, who, following the release of her debut album 'Love Your Dum And Mad', has been described as the imagined union of PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. Nadine performs 'Runaway' in the studio.

Danny tells A Thousand Lies to crime-writer Laura Wilson, whose new book 'The Riot' is set in 1958 in London's Notting Hill, where DI Stratton has just been posted. Stratton's new manor is dirt poor and rife with racial tension and is soon to be the scene of the worst racial violence England has ever known. 'The Riot' is published by Quercus on 29th August.

Miranda also talks to anti-folk singer songwriter and comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis. He tells her about his music, art and an illustration he did for the book 'Let's Start A Pussy Riot'. Jeffrey and his band The Rain perform 'WWPRD' from their EP of the same name.

Danny pulls a rabbit out of a hat with Paul Daniels, who's packing up his box of tricks for his magically mammoth national 'first farewell' tour. MON 23:00 Bremner's One Question Quiz (b038jkx6)
Where Did All the Money Go?

Rory Bremner's new weekly satirical comedy takes one big contemporary question each week and attempts to answer it. Regular panellists Nick Doody, Andy Zaltzman and Kate O'Sullivan are joined this week by Gillian Tett, of the Financial Times and the financial journalist Max Keiser.

Rory's mantra is that it's as important to make sense out of things as it is to make fun of them. He believes only then will people laugh at the truth. This deconstructed "quiz" has only one question each week, because that question is so big, there's no time for anything else: expect a mix of stand-up and sketch combined with investigative satire and incisive interviews with a diverse range of characters who really know what they're talking about.
