Talking about fellow broadcasters like John Snagge, John Arlott and Fred Trueman, Brian reveals many of their gaffes and mistakes, plus his very own 'Leg Over' incident, when he and Jonathan Agnew had a fit of the giggles.

Sadly this was to be Brian's final recording. Ten days later he suffered a major heart attack and died aged 81 on 5th January 1994. The Prime Minister, John Major, said: 'Summers will never be the same.'

Brian Johnston had always wanted to go on the stage but after Eton and Oxford he was persuaded to join the family coffee business in the City. During the war, he served in the Grenadier Guards, then joined the BBC Outside Broadcasts Department in 1946. For the next 48 years he commentated on everything from the funeral of King George VI to the annual Boat Race. He became the first BBC Cricket Correspondent and also presented 733 editions of 'Down Your Way' for the BBC Home Service and Radio 4.

His transition from the crease to the commentary box was cemented by one of the most memorable moments in broadcasting history - the notorious "legover" comment that prompted the legendary Brian Johnson to dissolve into helpless, prolonged giggles live on air.

Belgium - Hercule Poirot and Jules Maigret

Mark Lawson looks at modern European history through the device of crime fiction.

In the first programme, he's assisted in his inquiries by Jules Maigret and Hercule Poirot as he probes Belgium's unexpected prominence in the history of detective fiction. Poirot was created by an English woman and Maigret, a French detective, created by a Belgian Georges Simenon.

With Val McDermid, Lord Grey Gowrie, Andrea Camilleri and David Suchet.

Crime fiction reflects society's tensions. Helped by famous literary detectives, Mark shows how crimes reflect Europe's times from the 20th-century world wars to the Eurozone crisis and nationalist tensions of the 21st.

In crime fiction, everyday details become crucial clues: the way people dress and speak, the cars they drive, the jobs they have, the meals they eat. And the motivations of the criminals often turn on guilty secrets: how wealth was created, who slept with whom, what somebody did in the war. For these reasons, detective novels often tell the story of a place and a time much better than more literary novels and newspapers which can take a lot of contemporary information for granted.

Mark Lawson's series focuses on some of the celebrated investigators of European fiction and their creators: from popular modern protagonists - including Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander, Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole and Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano - through Ian Rankin's Inspector Rebus and Lynda La Plante's DCI Jane Tennison back to Friedrich Dürrenmatt's Inspector Barlach and Josef Skvorecký's Lieutenant Boruvka.

Producer: Robyn Read.

In Jennie Rooney's compelling spy thriller, a knock at the door threatens to expose the past Joan Stanley has been so keen to hide for the last 50 years.

Eleanor Bron and Olivia Hallinan are the readers.

BBC Radio 4 Extra's Book at Beachtime is a deliciously intense spy thriller set in wartime Cambridge and Cold-war London by the Costa shortlisted author, Jennie Rooney.

Inspired by the true story of Melita Norwood - who was exposed as a Cold-War spy for the Soviets - Red Joan is both a gripping "what would you do" tale of moral decisions and a moving love story.

Joan Stanley has a secret. She is a loving mother, a doting grandmother, and leads a quiet, unremarkable life in the suburbs. Then one morning there is a knock on the door, and suddenly the past she has been so keen to hide for the last fifty years threatens to rip apart all that she holds dear.

Hot on the trail of the smugglers, Dick Barton may have unwittingly placed his friends directly in danger...

The stirring 'Devil's Galop' heralds the arrival of Douglas Kelly as 'Dick Barton - Special Agent' in another thrilling tale of criminal masterminds, espionage and daring adventure.

Originally starring Noel Johnson, Duncan Carse and Gordon Davies, Dick Barton ran on the BBC Light Programme between 1946 and 1951, but sadly, very few original recordings survive.

With the original lost, this is a very authentic sounding re-recording of 'The Cabatolin Diamonds' using the original scripts and music, which was made for international distribution. Happily the audio was rediscovered in 2009, lurking in the vaults of the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra, Australia.

Script by Geoffrey Webb.

The Noticeboard of Doom

Written by Phil Whelans

Day 27 and the colonists are torn between Richard's newsletter and Archer's hot pants. And which is more dangerous - Brian's monkey wrench or Lillian's "vitamin" drink"?

A sitcom set on a shiny new planet where we ask the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

Welcome to the colony. We're aware that having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.

Personnel
Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage, so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine - "Getting On"), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.

Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonise space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

FRI 06:45 Dick Barton - Special Agent: The Cabatolin Diamonds (b036ybrp)
Episode 5

Jock manages to infiltrate the ground crew in a risky gambit, while Dick Barton and his chums get more than they bargained for.

Producer: Morris West

FRI 07:30 Richard Tyrone Jones's Big Heart (b036tqq5)
It's Your Funeral

Richard Tyrone Jones - healthy, gym-going poet, man about town and aspirant womaniser - finds himself, on his 30th birthday, stricken by an unexpected present: heart failure. Confined to hospital with a dilated, literally-big heart, stuck on drugs and drips and forced to cope with curious medical procedures and even curiouser fellow patients, will he die, or will he be doomed to life in a mobility scooter at home with his parents in Dudley?

Or maybe he can pull through with the help of poetry, cod philosophy, and friends - nihilistic Sophia, who tries to cheer his spirits with books by Houellebecq and Lovecraft, and his dour Welsh publisher / solicitor Jacob, who is in charge of his will but might actually sell more books if he dies. And will having a Big Heart shrink his romantic possibilities?

Half-way between a sitcom and real-life storytelling, and based on Richard's Wellcome Trust supported solo show which toured in 2012, each episode illuminates a different aspect of the experience of illness and facing your own mortality with a sense of humour.

Richard Tyrone Jones is a poet, writer and director of 'Utter!" spoken word, and director of spoken word at the Edinburgh Festival Free Fringe.

Written by Richard Tyrone Jones
With additional material by Paul Birtill

Produced by Nick Walker

FRI 23:30 Continuity (b00tq0p2)
Episode 5

A Continuity Announcer's booth can be a lonely place - especially on the late shift, when you've barely seen your wife and children for a week. Still, this Radio 4 Continuity Announcer is nothing, if not a consummate professional and he's not going to let his own insignificant little problems get in the way of your listening pleasure. Especially when there are so many exciting programmes coming up in the next week, which he's got to tell you about. At least some of them are exciting. Some of them aren't quite his cup of tea, if he's honest, but that's not really the point, is it? They may be right up your street. It's not really his place to express an opinion. Even if it is tempting. This may be a come-down from heady days spent announcing on the Today programme, but he's got a job to do. Though sometimes it is rather difficult to concentrate .....

Alistair McGowan stars in a new subversive sitcom about a Continuity Announcer brooding on the escalating disasters of his private and professional life; at the same time as attempting to give us a preview of the programmes on offer in the coming week on Radio 4. Or what might be Radio 4 in a parallel universe. Trails for 'The Ethical Enigma', 'Britain's Favourite Sound' and 'The History of Britain One Year at a Time' are just some of the strange delights on offer in the world of this 'radio professional', who harbours a slightly inappropriate relationship with his audience.

Written by Hugh Rycroft a stalwart of 'The News Quiz' and co-creator of 'Parliamentary Questions' and 'Life, Death and Sex with Mike and Sue', the series also features the voices of Lewis Macleod, Sally Grace, Charlotte Page and David Holt.

Produced by David Spicer and Frank Stirling.
A Unique Production for BBC Radio 4.
