Here was a black man daring to break into the heartland of the British 'classics', which had hitherto been the exclusive domain of white actors.

But, undeterred by the racial hostility of the press, Aldridge became a perpetually touring player, an exotic 'star', honing his skills in the provinces and across Europe. In a career spanning 30 years, he became one of Britain's finest Shakespearean players, and had more honours showered upon him than any other actor of his time.

SAT 17:30 The Sinha Test (b012fs6y)
In April 1990, Norman Tebbit suggested that immigrants who supported their country of origin over the England at cricket were unpatriotic. The "Tebbit Test", as it became known, was always an over-simplification; there are lots of reasons why the immigrant community in Britain may not support England: apparently racist selection policies; leading players taking part in sanctions-busting tours of Apartheid-era South Africa; Britain's complicated and not always flattering colonial history; the fact that for fifteen years, England were simply rubbish. But is any of this still relevant?

In July 2011, the Indian cricket team will arrive in England as the number one ranked team in the world. Over the course of five weeks an ageing but brilliant team containing the likes of Zaheer Khan, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and possibly the greatest batsman to have ever played, Sachin Tendulkar, will compete against the young, improving team that includes Alistair Cook, Jimmy Anderson, Stuart Broad and Kevin Pietersen.

In The Sinha Test stand-up comedian and cricket obsessive Paul Sinha - born in London to Indian parents - examines why he has been a lifelong India fan, despite considering himself "as British as a pub fight". Between the jokes he speaks to experts - a sociologist and a former Test cricketer - to see if he's alone in not always cheering on the country of his birth when it comes to cricket.

Paul Sinha was nominated for the if.Comedy Award at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival, and more "Best Headliner" at the 2009 Chortle awards. His 2010 Edinburgh show, Extreme Anti-White Vitriol won five five-star and six four-star reviews. He is a regular guest on Radio 4's The Now Show and 5Live's Fighting Talk.

Producer: Ed Morrish.

A Mathematical Improbability

Thinking of Leaving Your Husband is a four-part comedy drama by Charlotte Cory which explores a middle-aged woman's attempts to find herself a new romantic interest by joining an internet dating site. The series gives us two virtuoso acting performances by Lia Williams, who as Sarah, our heroine, appears in every scene, and Henry Goodman who not only plays Sarah's ex-husband Malcolm, but every one of her would-be lovers.

Sarah is distraught that she has been so deceived by her lying Dutchman. She is all for giving up the search to find a perfect partner. But Tania persuades her, for self-interested reasons, to go on a 'speed-dating' evening, where Sarah finally meets Tony, the mathematics professor and lover of ballroom dancing, whom she knows on the internet as 'Midnight Magic'. They are immediately attracted to each other - but leave without exchanging contact numbers and Sarah finds that Tania has wiped her details from the internet dating site. What are the mathematical chances of Sarah and Tony ever meeting again?

The Martin Beck Killings

Roseanna

Roseanna is the first in the Martin Beck series, written over ten years from 1965 - 1975 by the husband and wife writing team of Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. Featuring the intriguing, dogged, intuitive complex figure of Detective Inspector Martin Beck and his colleagues in the National Police Homicide Department in Stockholm, the books set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction, and for much of the best crime fiction in Britain and America written since the 1960s. The books have been admired and imitated by crime writers and readers ever since their publication; now Radio 4 offers audiences the opportunity to discover just why the books have been so acclaimed by those in the know.

The use of crime and police procedure to hold up a mirror to society and its most dysfunctional elements is commonplace now, but that's because Martin Beck paved the way for subsequent generations of European crime writers whose fallible heroes - Kurt Wallander, John Rebus etc. - make the best fist they can of their own lives whilst trying to tackle the violence around them.

The books were written deliberately to give an unsentimental, realistic portrait of Sweden in the mid-sixties: not the liberal place it was thought to be, but a society suffering from a stifling bureaucracy and a creeping rottenness behind the surface sheen. Confronting the dark side of this society are stubborn, logical, anti-social Detective Inspector Martin Beck, his closest friend Detective Inspector Lennart Kollberg - overweight, hedonistic, opinionated; Detective Inspector Frederick Melander, with a memory like a card-index file and a noxious pipe clamped in his jaws, and their colleagues in the murder squad.

In Roseanna, they are faced with the body of an unknown girl found in a canal dredger. The long investigation ends with a risky and frightening sting.

WED 07:30 The Brig Society (b0368fx0)
Series 1

Hospital

Uh-oh - Marcus Brigstocke has been put in charge of a thing! Each week, Marcus finds he's volunteered to be in charge of a big old thing - a hospital, the railways, British fashion, a prison. And each week he starts out by thinking "Well, it can't be that difficult, surely?" and ends up with "Oh - turns out it's utterly difficult and complicated. Who knew...?"

This week, he's been given his very own hospital, complete with doctors, nurses and pyjama smokers outside so you know it's a proper one. Do we have too many bureaucrats? Is privatization of health care a good or a bad thing? And are alternative medicine and homeopathy utter rubbish or merely complete drivel? Marcus gives you the results - albeit two weeks later and mixed up with those of another programme!

Assisting him with the procedures are Rufus Jones (Hunderby, Holy Flying Circus), William Andrews (Sorry I've Got No Head) and Margaret Cabourn-Smith (Miranda).

The show is produced by Marcus's long-standing accomplice, David Tyler, who also produces Marcus appearances as the inimitable as Giles Wemmbley Hogg.

Written by Marcus Brigstocke, Jeremy Salsby, Toby Davies, Nick Doody, Steve Punt and Tom Neenan.

Produced by David Tyler

Hairdresser from Space

Day 7 on the colony, and Mason stirs up an ethical nightmare involving a clone, a murder and some dreadlocks. Meanwhile, Archer the handyman attempts some repairs on his own head.

A sitcom set on a shiny new planet where we ask the question - if humankind were to colonize space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

Welcome to the colony. We're aware that having been in deep cryosleep for 73 years, you may be in need of some supplementary information.

Unfortunately, Burrows the leader of the colony has died on the voyage, so his Number 2, Brian (Nicholas Lyndhurst) is now in charge. He's a nice enough chap, but no alpha male, and his desire to sort things out with a nice friendly meeting infuriates the colony's Chief Physician Lillian (Vicki Pepperdine - "Getting On"), who'd really rather everyone was walking round in tight colour-coded tunics and saluting each other. She's also in charge of Project Adam, the plan to conceive and give birth to the first colony-born baby. Unfortunately, the two people hand-picked for this purpose - Carol and Richard - were rather fibbing about being a couple, just to get on the trip.

Add in an entirely unscrupulous Chief Scientist, Mason and also Archer, an idiot maintenance man who believes he's an "empath" rather than a plumber, and you're all set to answer the question - if humankind were to colonize space, is it destined to succumb to self-interest, prejudice and infighting? (By the way, the answer's "yes". Sorry.)

The Martin Beck Killings

The Laughing Policeman

In the fourth of the Martin Beck Killings, Beck is now a Detective Superintendant. But his promotion hasn't made him any more cheerful; if anything, it's only confirmed his gloomy belief that the best way to solve crimes is by hard slog, dogged persistence, a grimly realistic view of human nature - and the occasional flash of sheer intuition. His team of colleagues, headed by Lennart Kollberg and Frederick Melander, are used to his stubborn ways and his frequent colds. His wife Inga isn't as tolerant.

The Laughing Policeman begins on the evening of a big demonstration in Stockholm against the Vietnam war; as the police are dealing with protesters outside the American embassy, a mass shooting on a bus in a suburb ends with nine dead, including one of Martin Beck's team. The trail to find the murderer leads Beck back to an unsolved case from the past that had puzzled the Swedish police for years.

When the nation bids farewell to a controversial yet iconic figure from the East Midlands - his beloved dog Saxon - Pod blows his questionably-gotten fortune on the funeral.

With his prospects in the gutter, and bailiffs turning up faster than grey streaks in his mullet, has Pod finally met his match? Or can a precocious young Tyke help him save the day?

A Hat Trick production for BBC Radio 4.
