Permission to Speak, Sir!: Dad's Army on Radio

They don't like it up 'em!

After winning their frontline TV offensive, how did the Home Guard win the war of the ears with a rear-guard action for radio?

Legendary comedy producer Harold Snoad and actor Michael Knowles reveal how they went about adapting the classic BBC TV hit series for radio – as the writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft were too busy to do it themselves.

Over three hours, enjoy six Dad's Army episodes made for radio:

* The Enemy Within the Gates: Captain Mainwaring's platoon try to capture Germans for a reward. From February 1974.

* Don't Forget the Diver: The platoon don crazy camouflage in a drill to attack Captain Square's HQ. From February 1975.

* When Did You Last See Your Money?: Corporal Jones panics when he misplaces £500 collected for the servicemen's canteen. From May 1975.

* Put That Light Out: Captain Mainwaring's platoon causes havoc in Walmington-on-Sea during an air-raid. From February 1975.

Snoad and Knowles reflect on how the cast took to re-recording the shows without cameras and discuss the changes that had to be made to make the TV scripts work.

The duo's association with Dad's Army continued with their spin off radio comedy series, It Sticks Out Half A Mile.

Rumpole and the Penge Bungalow Murders

Old Unhappy Far-Off Things

By John Mortimer.

A Christmas treat for all Rumpole fans and all Radio 4 listeners who love a good whodunit with a cracking court case thrown in for good measure.

Benedict Cumberbatch, plays the young, feisty, devastatingly acute legal eagle Horace Rumpole in his first big murder case, where he defends for the first time "alone and without a leader" in the case which was to make his name; and of course the story also marks the beginning of his life-long liason with "She who must be obeyed"; as we hear, recalled through the memoirs of the older Rumpole, how young Rumpole found himself engaged and married without being absolutely sure that he had in fact proposed in the first place!

It is the fifties, a short decade after the end of the war, and two war heroes have been shot dead. The only suspect is Simon Jerrold, the son of one of the victims, and he faces the death penalty. Defending him is deemed hopeless, so the case is handed to a novice. But the novice's superiors didn't count on the tenacity and wit of the young and hungry Horace Rumpole

SAT 17:30 Believe It! (b01hxmw4)
Series 1

Boots

Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has always said he'd never write one.
Based on glimmers of truth, Believe It is the hilarious, bizarre, revealing (and, most importantly, untrue) celebrity radiography of Richard Wilson.

He narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised scenes from his fictional life-story. He plays a heavily exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, theatre and Manchester United (all true), who's a confidant of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for governments and fierce rivalry with Sean Connery (not true).

All the melodramatic staples of celebrity-autobiography are wonderfully undercut by Richard's deadpan delivery.
(The title - in case you hadn't spotted - is an unashamed reference to his famous catchphrase.)

Richard is supported by a small core cast viz
David Tennant
John Sessions
Lewis Macleod
Arabella Weir
and Jane Slavin
who play anyone and everyone!

Ghost written by Jon Canter
Produced by Clive Brill
A Pacificus Production for BBC Radio 4.

Just as well Steve remembered to bring along her revolver as well as her ration book... A mid-morning vintage champagne crime cocktail.

The background:

April 1938 saw the transmission on the BBC's Midland Regional Programme of a thriller serial called 'Send for Paul Temple', written by Francis Durbridge. For the next thirty years, until 1968, the incomparably suave private detective and crime novelist Paul, together with his glamorous Fleet Street journalist wife Steve, solved case after baffling case in one of BBC radio's most enduringly popular series. Unfortunately, recordings of many of the early series are lost to the archives.

In 2006 Radio 4 broadcast a brand new production of one of the missing Temples - the ninth series, 'Paul Temple and the Sullivan Mystery', with Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson as Paul and Steve. Using vintage microphones and sound effects, and much of the original incidental music, the production was as far as possible a technical and stylistic replica of how the 1947 original might have sounded if its recording had survived. It proved enormously popular with the audience on Radio 4, and subsequently on Radio 7, with hundreds of letters, e-mails and phone calls. A second revival in 2008 (this time of 'Paul Temple and the Madison Mystery') proved equally popular. So, here we go again, with 'Paul Temple and Steve', which was first broadcast on the BBC's Light Programme in eight weekly episodes from 30th March 1947 to 18th May 1947.

Francis Durbridge, the creator of Paul Temple, was born in Hull in 1912 and died in 1998. He one of the most successful novelists, playwrights and scriptwriters of his day.

MON 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State (b00t4qkn)
The Doctors Take Over

A Ministry of Health Report in 1956 referred to heavy drinking as something that had been an issue in Britain "at times in the 18th and 19th century". In 1961 the Home Secretary RA Butler confidently told the Commons that "public drunkenness is not a problem". But such denial couldn't last long.

As part of his series on the politics of alcohol in Britain, Mark Whitaker focuses on the decision by government in 1962 to build specialist alcoholic treatment units around the country. It was called "the first official recognition of alcoholism as an illness which should be the responsibility of doctors", and was an acknowledgement that drinking was on the increase. This period saw the first specific warnings about teenage drinking.

But controversies followed. Several Regional Hospital Boards were reluctant to invest in the new units; research suggested that in-patient treatment was not necessarily the most effective; and the strategy was attacked for being of limited value to those most in need of help - the unemployed meths drinkers of 'Skid Rows' in the major cities.

This was when the pioneering psychiatrist Griffith Edwards first proposed his methods for tackling drunkenness as a public health issue, based on its being recognised as a community-wide problem. Edwards contributes to the programme, while actors read documents from the 1960s.

A Square Dog production for BBC Radio 4.

TUE 14:15 Britain on the Bottle: Alcohol and the State (b00t3tdc)
The 'Drink Question', Past and Present

In the last decade or so Britain has experienced renewed social and political panic over the consequences of excessive drinking, and the concept of 'alcohol related harms' has entered the language. A coherent policy community has developed, and research has multiplied, around questions of alcohol control. But governments have seemingly been reluctant to listen.

Mark Whitaker concludes his look at the politics of alcohol since the 17th century by examining New Labour's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy of 2004, and related relaxation of the licensing system.

Whitaker interviews the historians whose work has informed his own research, and asks them how they think the past can or should inform present policy. He talks to James Nicholls, Virginia Berridge, John Greenaway and Betsy Thom. They address questions about why the 'Drink Question' has been defined differently at different times; why the liquor industry has been so politically powerful; why the temperance movement lasted so long but seemingly achieved so little; and why alcoholism and drunkenness have posed distinct policy challenges.

Above all, they reflect on the complexity of alcohol as a commodity, and on why legislating about it has been, and remains, remarkably difficult.

WED 18:30 Daphne Du Maurier (b007jq6k)
The Birds

Episode 1

The novel was famously filmed for the cinema by Alfred Hitchcock in 1963. But don't expect anything like what was on the big screen here. This is Du Maurier's original story. In fact, the author disliked what Hitchcock did to her tale: particularly his translation of her setting from Cornwall - with its small fields and stone hedges - to small-town America.

As this original story opens, with the colder winter weather drawing in, Nat and his family notice the hungry birds are gathering in the village...

Richard is supported by a small core cast viz:
David Tennant
John Sessions
Lewis Macleod
Arabella Weir
And Jane Slavin
Who play anyone and everyone!

Ghost written by Jon Canter
Produced by: Clive Brill
A Pacificus Production for BBC Radio 4.
