The Cruel Sea is the story of the crew of a newly commissioned corvette, Compass Rose, a ship that forms part of the escort to merchant convoys during World War II. The crew are mostly inexperienced men from non-naval backgrounds and the story focuses on their differing reactions to the horrifying experiences they have as German U-boats attack their convoys with increasing success. Some will survive the war, and some won't - but all of them will be changed by their experiences.
But this isn't just a war story. In a surprisingly subtle way, The Cruel Sea also chronicles the often abrasive process by which classes, previously unknown to each other, were thrown together onboard ship and had to learn to rub along - and how the earned respect, in the long term, led to the future Welfare State and the social equity and cooperation of the 50's and 60's.
The novel, published in 1951, was an immediate success and it has never been out of print since. It brings home the realities of the longest battle in the second world war, the Battle for the Atlantic, but it does so not through harrowing depiction of the horrors involved, but through its detailed depiction the people involved, people we come to care about, to admire, and to mourn.

MON 11:15 Loose Ends (b01qspy3)
Clive Anderson, Peter Bradshaw, David Essex, Dean Atta, Giles Coren, Jo Bunting, Keaton Henson, RKZ

Pop idol and star of film, TV and West End stage, as well as a composer, producer and director, David Essex has had a stellar career spanning 5 decades. From 'Godspell', via 'That'll be the Day' to 'EastEnders', he's also sold millions of records world-wide, and was recently honoured for his charity work. He'll be reflecting on his life with Clive, prompted by his new autobiography, 'Over the Moon'.

The Guardian's film critic, Peter Bradshaw tells Clive how it feels to be on the receiving end of criticism. His novel 'Night of Triumph' is a comedy crime thriller about the Princesses' Elizabeth and Margaret's big adventure on VE night in 1945. But how much of it is true?

Jo Bunting talks to young, multi-award winning poet Dean Atta whose best known poem I Am Nobody's Nigger was inspired by Stephen Lawrence's murder. In it he castigates those who use the 'N' word - that being one of the final words Stephen Lawrence heard before he died.
His debut collection goes under the same name as that poem.

And, after the horse-meat scandal, can Giles Coren persuade Clive that eating out is safe? Giles starred in three series of 'The Supersizers' and talks about his latest book, 'How to Eat Out - Lessons From A Life Lived Mostly In Restaurants'.

Music this week comes from the critically acclaimed, but rarely seen, Keaton Henson who performs his single 'Lying To You' from his new album 'Birthdays'.

And from RKZ who plays 'Superstars' from his 'Words of Adrenaline' Mixtape.

Producer: Cathie Mahoney.

MON 14:15 Churchill's Other Lives (b00zft85)
Son and Father

Winston Churchill was revered by millions as the saviour of Britain in the Second World War, but he wasn't just a great war leader - he wrote millions of words of journalism, he painted, he built brick walls, he owned racehorses, he gambled in Monte Carlo casinos and even wrote screenplays. Yet his personality was mercurial; bouts of hyper-activity were interspersed with black days of depression. While he had a loving marriage, he spent long periods apart from his wife and children, some of whom caused him deep anxiety and distress.

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of his death, celebrated historian Sir David Cannadine, author of In Churchill's Shadow, examines the life and career of Winston Churchill by looking at ten different themes that are less well known, but which are crucial to a fuller understanding of one of the most extraordinary individuals ever to occupy No. 10 Downing Street.

Winston Churchill had an unhappy childhood. His father was distant, drunken and cold. His mother was a spendthrift who had numerous affairs. So how was he able to rise above his difficult upbringing and become the success he did? Sir David Cannadine looks at Winston Churchill's family life, exploring the legacy left by Churchill's childhood when he himself became a father.

Series 1

Episode 2

One of those parties that starts out as a great way to get to know each other better, but promptly gets taken over by fake tans, jerk chicken, insomniac parents and berets.

Hard To Tell is a four part relationship comedy by Jonny Sweet (Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2009). It conjures up characters depicting every relationship from father and daughter to the mirror in the bathroom and the feller hiding at a party; from the stalker and the stalked to dog owners and their dogs; and from lifelong friends to long term partners and their dearly departed.

The series revolves around Tom Sheffield (played by Jonny himself), his immediate family (Getting On's Vicki Pepperdine, The Thick Of It's Alex MacQueen and Not Going Out's Katy Wix), and Tom's longed-for-and-lusted-after new girlfriend Ellen (played by Charlotte Ritchie), her best friend Hermione (Him & Her's Sarah Solemani) and Ellen's zealously protective father (Simon Greenall).

Tim Key and Tom Basden both make deliciously awkward cameo appearances.

Recorded on location, Hard To Tell's naturalistic, contemporary and conversational style brings new meaning to pub toilets, themed parties, early morning phone calls and Christmas Editions of Jonathan Creek.

Producer: Lucy Armitage
A Tiger Aspect production for BBC Radio 4.

WED 14:15 Churchill's Other Lives (b00zlcpw)
Cinema

Winston Churchill was a film fanatic and sought an active role in the movie business. He became friends with Charlie Chaplin and collaborated as a screenwriter in the 1930s with the great Hungarian-born director Alexander Korda. A scene set in the trenches of World War One from Churchill's screenplay - never made into a film - is dramatised here for the first time, as Sir David Cannadine explores Winston Churchill's love affair with cinema and his growing awareness of the power of the moving image. Featuring Roger Allam as Winston Churchill.

FRI 14:15 Churchill's Other Lives (b00zllkb)
Painting

Despite not taking up painting until he was 40, Winston Churchill produced more than 500 canvasses in his lifetime and became an honorary member of the Royal Academy. His show there in 1959 outsold every previous exhibition except one dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci. So why was painting such an important part of Churchill's life? Sir David Cannadine explores the hobby that meant most to Churchill and how it helped to keep what he called the 'black dog' of depression at bay.

Featuring Roger Allam as Winston Churchill.
