MON 06:30 The Mind of Mr JG Reeder (b0082gyz)
1, The Poetical Policeman

Mr JG Reeder has the mind of a criminal, using it to uncover the peculiar circumstances surrounding a bank robbery, the death of the night-watchman and the part in the plot played by his beautiful daughter.

This first of four stories provides useful insight into the past of Mr JG Reeder, whose novel methods bring the criminals of 1920s London to justice.

Read by David Horovitch.

Edgar Wallace is best known for his popular detective and suspense stories which earned him the title, "King of the Modern Thriller."

Although created at roughly the same time, Mr JG Reeder is the diametric opposite of Sam Spade, Philip Marlow and Mike Hammer. He is a shabbily dressed, diffident civil servant who prefers a cup of tea and a slice of seed cake to a shot of something stronger.

Reeder is a uniquely English detective. An apparent fuddy-duddy working in some obscure capacity in the Public Prosecutor's office, he actually has a razor-sharp intellect and is a super-sleuth. He solves his mysteries because he fully understands the "criminal mind".

Abridged for radio by Neville Teller.

Maddox ..... John Sessions
Oliver ..... Alex Jennings
Freddy ..... Stephen Wight
Carol ..... Polly Frame
Masha ..... Debbie Chazen
Keith ..... Sam Dale

Producer ..... Sally Avens

A group of dysfunctional journalists attempt to cover major news stories at the same time as grappling with the demands of working in a multi-platform environment, watching circulation figures plummet and the recession causing half the workforce to be laid off.

At the heart of the comedy is the relationship between Maddox Bradley, a journalist who mourns the day of proper investigative journalism, and Freddy, the online editor who will regurgitate a press release quite happily and call it a story. But they have a grudging respect for the each other as Freddy helps Maddox stay afloat in the world of Twitter, Facebook and podcasting and Maddox shows Freddy how to sniff out the real story. Both are at the mercy of Oliver, the pragmatic editor more concerned with keeping his job, and Carol, the news editor who believes that circulation will increase if they run pieces on Big Mac eating orang-utans and 'intelligent' skunks rather than Maddox's moral crusading diatribes. And only Masha, the Russian head of online communities, who wants to give away all their content because that is true democracy, knows Freddy's secret; that he's a posh boy from Eton rather than a hyper-cool kid from the street; well that's what Freddy thinks anyway.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2010.

TUE 18:30 Gaston Leroux - The Phantom of the Opera (b008hvvp)
Episode 1

Tragedy strikes at the Opera House in 19th century Paris - home to a fabled ghost.

Starring Anna Massey as Madame Giry, Peter Guinness as The Phantom, James D'Arcy as Raoul de Chagny Helen Goldwyn as Christine Daaé

"The Phantom of the Opera" is a classic tale of murder, romance and suspense in 19th-century Paris. Gaston Leroux's original novel, "Le Fantôme de l'Opéra" was published in 1911 and it's never been out of print since. The subject of countless plays, films and musicals - this is the first adaptation to remaining utterly faithful to the spirit and plot of Leroux's original. There are many sequences here which have never appeared before in any adaptation.

Leroux was a prolific writer in many genres, as well as being a playboy and globetrotter. But he started out as a journalist, which is how he came across the true stories forming the basis for the plot of "The Phantom of the Opera": a misshapen skeleton unearthed in the foundations of the Paris Opera House, a subterranean lake, a fatal accident with the chandelier and, of course, rumours of the Opera Ghost.

This adaptation was the first version to include the correct operatic sequences referred to in the novel: arias from Charles Gounod's Faust and his Romeo et Juliette, and Desdemona's famous aria from Rossini's Otello. These were specially recorded by singers from the ENO and Opera Diva.

In the novel, The Phantom performs a section of his own self-penned opera - Don Juan Triumphant - and this too is included in this adaptation, composed by classical musician Tim Sutton. Tim also wrote a new score for the entire adaptation with a theme tune played by violinist Ruth Rogers.

Freshly translated, dramatised and produced by Barnaby Edwards.

A Big Finish Production.

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster is an elegy to the young gap-year student who was attacked in Stubbeylee Park, Bacup, Lancashire. She later died on August 24th 2007. This is an elegy to mark the anniversary of her death, four years later. Aged twenty, Sophie suffered fatal injuries while cradling her boyfriend Rob's head in an attempt to protect him from a ferocious attack by a group of youths. Rob survived but Sophie went into a coma and never recovered.

Sophie was an intelligent bookish child who showed signs of wanting to be different from an early age. Political, vegetarian, a pacifist, Sophie had left school with A levels and was thinking about what to do with her future when it was taken so brutally from her.

Sophie and Rob dressed in a unique way, expressing their individuality as creative artistic people through goth-style clothes, piercings and make-up, which provoked the fatal attack in the early hours of that Saturday morning. Sophie had been dating Rob Maltby, a 21-year-old art student for three years.

I didn't do sport.
I didn't do meat.
Don't ask me to wear that dress:
I shan't.
Why ask me to toe the line,
I can't.
I was slight or small
but never petite,
and nobody's fool;
no Barbie doll;
no girlie girl.
I was lean and sharp,
not an ounce of fat
on my thoughts or my limbs.
In my difficult teens
I was strange, I was odd,
- aren't we all -
there was something different down at the core.
Boy bands and pop tarts left me cold,
let's say
that I marched to the beat
of a different drum,
sang another tune,
wandered at will
through the market stalls
humming protest songs.

I wore studded dog leads
around my wrist,
and was pleased as punch
in the pit, at the gig,
to be singled out
by a shooting star
of saliva from Marilyn Manson's lips.

But for all that stuff
in many ways an old fashioned soul,
quite at home
in my own front room,
on my own settee.
I read, I wrote,
I painted, I drew.
Where it came from
no one knows
but it flowed. It flowed.

Black Roses: The Killing of Sophie Lancaster is a drama documentary in which Sophie tells her own story through a series of poignant poems written by the award-winning poet Simon Armitage alongside her mother, Sylvia Lancaster remembering her daughter's shortened life.

FRI 18:00 Kurt Vonnegut - The Euphio Question (b0088zh5)
A way of producing and harnessing happiness is revealed when a physicist plays out the sound of dark matter during a local radio programme.

The sound lulls the listeners into a state of euphoria, producing an effect not unlike a large dose of sedative.

The ethical and moral implications of marketing this new found product become evident - as the temptation to make money and control huge numbers of people proves too great.

Kurt Vonnegut's short story is read by Stuart Milligan.

One of the outstanding figures of modern US literature, Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was a cult figure among students in the 1960s and 1970s with his classics of US counterculture.

The bombing of Dresden by allied forces in 1945 was the pivotal moment of his life, which informed his best-known work 'Slaughterhouse Five'.

Abridged and produced by Gemma Jenkins

Made for BBC 7 and first broadcast in 2007.
