SUN 10:00 Desert Island Discs Revisited (m0001x1q)
PD James

From Antonio Vivaldi to Oscar Wilde. Crime writer PD James shares her castaway choices with Sue Lawley.

PD James was born in Oxford, later moving to Ludlow on the Welsh Borders where she experienced a childhood which she says had more in common with a Victorian childhood than anything today. She was a well-behaved, quiet child who entertained herself and her siblings by telling and writing stories. Phyllis attended an old-fashioned grammar school where she enjoyed English lessons. She says "I knew I was going to write books".

Because of financial pressures at home, she had to leave school at 16, first following her father into the tax office, then in a theatre where she met her husband, who was training to be a doctor. World War Two intervened and, because her husband returned from work in the Medical Corps with a severe mental illness, Phyllis had to be the main breadwinner, working as principal hospital administrator at the North West Regional Hospital Board, London in charge of five psychiatric hospitals.

It wasn't until she was 39, whilst working in the hospital, that Phyllis began her first novel, Cover Her Face. "I knew it was something I was going to do, and it was just that life was so busy I didn't get round to it". She chose the name PD James because it looked good on a book jacket, and crime genre because she didn't want to draw on autobiographical details.

The book was immediately accepted by a publisher, and in 1979 she gave up her other jobs to become a full-time writer, focusing on Detective Adam Dalgleish of Scotland Yard as her main character. P D James was awarded the OBE in 1982 and made a Life Peer in 1992.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 1992.

Linehan, Sutherland, Scales

Hosted by the Professor of Ignorance from the University of Buckingham John Lloyd C.B.E. and the intensely curious comedian Dave Gorman.

This week's guests:

Coming from a long line of vicars, Robin Ince is the UK's most rational comedian, and he tests his reason to the limit once every year by performing at least four shows a day at the Edinburgh fringe. His infamous Bad Book Club, which in which he invites his fellow comedians to celebrate awful literature, has become an institution, and his massive Christmas show Nine Lessons and Carols For Godless People is now a huge event, featuring the likes of Jarvis Cocker, Dara O Briain and Richard Dawkins.

Roger Highfield is a scientist, science author and the editor of New Scientist, but if you met him, you wouldn't immediately guess that science is his thing. He's jolly and worldly and has the hearty laugh of a comic supervillain. He first made his name as a scientist be being the first person ever to bounce a neutron off a soap bubble. Roger has written and co-written 9 best-selling science books, including a book on the hows and whys of Dolly the sheep, an explanation of the science of Harry Potter and a biography of Einstein.

Gareth Edwards is a filmmaker whose success and methods of achieving it have sent ripples of fear through the studios of Hollywood. His movie Monsters is an apocalyptic blockbuster which he made for one five hundredth of the budget for Avatar by shooting with a small, mobile team, hiring non-actors on the spot and using dazzling-but-cheap CGI effects.

Recorded at the BBC's Paris Studio in Lower Regent Street, London. Announcer: Douglas Smith

Round The Horne was born out of the demise of BBC radio comedy Beyond Our Ken, after the end of writer Eric Merriman's involvement. Using the same cast and producer, Barry Took and Marty Feldman were persuaded to write the scripts - which led to four series that ran between 1965 and 1968 - packed full of parodies, recurring characters, catchphrases and double-entendres.

Marty Feldman had moved on so series 4 is written by Barry Took with Brian Cooke & Johnnie Mortimer and Brian Webster

Music by the Max Harris Group.

Producer: John Simmonds

First broadcast on the BBC Radio 2 in February 1968.

Clive Anderson and guests with an eclectic mix of conversation, music and comedy.

Clive will be finding out whether British Comedy Award winner Bill Bailey is indeed 'Part Troll', as one of his previous shows suggests and will be talking to him about his new tour 'Dandelion Mind', in which Bill laments about punk heroes, Iranian hip-hop and revisits the music of his youth with some Wurzels-based remixes of German techno. Just your normal Bill Bailey gig then!

The man of mystery himself Derren Brown will appear in the studio, as if by magic to talk about his new Channel 4 series 'The Experiments'. The first show investigates hypnosis and asks whether someone could be hypnotised into killing a celebrity. Will Clive and his guests survive the programme? 3, 2, 1, you're back in the room!

Hopefully there won't be any skeletons in the closet of anatomist and 'Coast'ess with the mostess Alice Roberts, who's new BBC2 series 'Origins Of Us' tells the evolutionary tale of humans.

Emma Freud will be doodling with Perrier Award winning stand-up comedian Demetri Martin, whose book of drawings and riotous prose titled 'This Is A Book' swings from a melodrama about a clinic of doctors who treat only the flesh wounds of Hollywood action heroes to the occupational hazard of human cannonballs.

Music from artist and bluesy rock 'n' roller Marcus Foster, who performs 'Memory Of Your Arms' on the Loose Ends grand piano. And not content with tickling the conventional ivories, singer-songwriter Jo Hamilton is the first artist in the world to work with the AirPiano, also known as the 'magic plank', which she will gracefully demonstrate by performing 'There It Is'.

Producer: Cathie Mahoney.

A Clean Slate

SOLOPARENTPALS.COM by Sue Teddern.
Episode 1. A Clean Slate.

After a year cyberpals Rosie and Tom still haven't met in the flesh. Rosie discovers that she quite likes her ex's new girlfriend and that Tom has a new love interest.

Rosie - Maxine Peake
Tom - Kris Marshall
Tash - Karina Jones
Calum - Thomas Rolinson
Gill - Christine Kavanagh
Barb - Alison Pettitt
Bazz - Sam Dale
Scott - David Seddon

Director: David Hunter

Rosie (Maxine Peake) is a Bolton care-worker whose ex-husband Phil traded her in for a younger model four years ago leaving her to bring up Calum, now 12, alone.

Tom (Kris Marshall) is a housing officer in Exeter whose wife and confidence walked out on him eighteen months ago. He only sees his daughter Lily at weekends.

In the first series despite a succession of twists and turns, mistimings and misunderstandings between the rather nervous, disorganised Tom and the mouthy, controlling Rosie, an underlying friendship and dependence seemed to emerge - but an actual meeting in the flesh failed to take place.

Now, a year later, Rosie is coming to terms with the fact that Phil has had a baby with his new partner Debbie - a woman that she finds, to her surprise, that she has much in common with, perhaps too much? Tom has meanwhile being going steady with Siobhan, a work colleague and while he enjoys the regular sex, fresh veg and clean towels he can't help thinking things are going a little too fast.

Communications between the two are still long-distance, by email, telephone or through the website. Other SPP.COM participants chip in with their own perspectives and concerns - Baz is still the Neanderthal male, Tash the Lash in Wales is trying hard to rein in her party girl style, Gillybean has stashed her OU books in the attic and Gok Wanned her wardrobe and Scott is still coping with three teenage daughters and an obsession with poultry. And blunt newcomer Brummie Barb introduces a same-sex relationship into the mix.

SOLOPARENTPALS.COM will continue to strike a chord with single parents throughout the land and listeners will be able to readily identify with the situations that concern Rosie and Tom and their website friends.

SOLOPARENTPALS.COM is Sue Teddern's home territory. Her natural comic touch and her ear for domestic and emotional detail combines with a convincing touch of the absurd to create an involving and moving take on the love story - albeit one fraught with a multiplicity of misunderstandings and misinterpretations along the way.

Paul Temple and the Gilbert Case

Peter Galino

After the discovery of the body of key witness, Mary Talbot, there's drama back at her flat - and suave sleuth Paul worries that wife Steve is in danger.

Francis Durbridge's thriller stars Peter Coke as Paul Temple and Marjorie Westbury as Steve in another intriguing case for BBC radio's smoothest investigator and his glamorous wife.

With Duncan McIntyre as Detective Inspector Kingston, Richard Williams as Lance Reynolds, Grizelda Hervey as Betty Wayne, James Beattie as Charlie and Robert Rietty as Peter Galino.

From 1938 to 1969 the fictional crime novelist and detective Paul Temple, together with his Fleet Street journalist Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC radio's most popular series. They inhabited a sophisticated world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, where the women were chic and the men wore cravats - a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Paul's help with his latest tricky case.

Producer: Martin C Webster

First broadcast on the BBC Light Programme in 1954.

TUE 07:30 Hard to Tell (b015p5g6)
Series 1

Episode 1

Thanks to a bike accident that's landed him in A&E, Tom Sheffield is about to go for a pizza with Ellen, a woman with the most noble of foreheads and - it turns out - the most attentive of dads.

Hard To Tell is a four part relationship comedy by Jonny Sweet (Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer 2009). He conjures up characters depicting every relationship from father and daughter to the mirror in the bathroom and the feller hiding at a party; from the stalker and the stalked to dog owners and their dogs; and from lifelong friends to long term partners and their dearly departed.

The series revolves around Tom Sheffield (played by Jonny himself), his immediate family (Getting On's Vicki Pepperdine, The Thick Of It's Alex MacQueen and Not Going Out's Katy Wix), and Tom's longed-for-and-lusted-after new girlfriend, Ellen (played by Charlotte Ritchie), her best friend Hermione (Him & Her's Sarah Solemani) and Ellen's zealously protective father (Simon Greenall).

Tim Key and Tom Basden both make deliciously awkward cameo appearances.

Recorded on location, Hard To Tell's naturalistic, contemporary and conversational style brings new meaning to pub toilets, themed parties, early morning phone calls and Christmas Editions of Jonathan Creek.

Producer: Lucy Armitage
A Tiger Aspect production for BBC Radio 4.

Doormats

SOLOPARENTPALS.COM by Sue Teddern.
Episode 3. Doormats

Not only has Rosie been sleeping with her ex-husband but she has become good friends with his girlfriend. Meanwhile Tom's ex treats him like a doormat.

MAXINE PEAKE's recent radio includes BETSY COLEMAN, A SMALL PIECE OF SILENCE and THAT REPULSIVE WOMAN. Television work includes DINNER LADIES, SHAMELESS, THE STREET and CRIMINAL JUSTICE.

The worst idea for an internet business (including Richard Herring's 'life comparison' website ranking the entire human race in order of success), and the problem with Richard Hammond are just two of targets that come under the wrong examination in this edition.

The host of 'So Wrong It's Right', Charlie Brooker, also presents BBC4's award - winning series 'Newswipe' and 'You Have Been Watching' on Channel 4 - plus writing for 'The Guardian'. Paul Temple and the Gilbert Case

A Warning from Miss Wayne

Lynn Ferguson recounts her ordeal of being kidnapped - while suave sleuth Paul Temple gets some drunken advice from Betty Wayne.

Francis Durbridge's thriller stars Peter Coke as Paul Temple and Marjorie Westbury as Steve in another intriguing case for BBC radio's smoothest investigator and his glamorous wife.

With Peggy Hassard as Lynn Ferguson, James Beattie as Charlie, Lester Mudditt as Sir Graham Forbes, Grizelda Hervey as Betty Wayne and Duncan McIntyre as Detective Inspector Kingston.

Happy Now?

SOLOPARENTPALS.COM by Sue Teddern.
Episode 5. Happy Now?

Rosie and Tom meet.

Rosie ..... Maxine Peake
Tom ..... Kris Marshall
SPP voice ..... Karina Jones
Calum ..... Thomas Rolinson
Gill ..... Christine Kavanagh
Scott ..... David Seddon

MAXINE PEAKE's recent radio includes BETSY COLEMAN, A SMALL PIECE OF SILENCE and THAT REPULSIVE WOMAN. Television work includes DINNER LADIES, SHAMELESS, THE STREET and CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
