We've Only Just Begun
The Carpenters - brother and sister duo Richard and Karen - were one of the most popular groups of the 1970s.
His outstanding compositions and her stunning vocals created several massive hits including We've Only Just Begun.
Originally written as a TV advert for a bank portraying happy young couples embarking on married life full of hope, they loved it and released it as their third single in 1970. Karen's wistful voice gave the song a melancholy that has long resonated with fans.
After her premature death from heart failure due to anorexia nervosa, the song took on an extra poignancy with lyrics like "so much of life ahead".
Fans tell their stories about the song and how it relates to their own life journeys.
For Professor Karen Tongson (named after the singer), We've Only Just Begun is about growing up in the Philippines where The Carpenters epitomised the American Dream. When she emigrated to the USA, the song became a metaphor for the immigrant experience.
Nomad and writer Jeff Read remembers his childhood in a poor part of Los Angeles brought up by a single mother who eventually died homeless on the street. The song brings back memories of childhood optimism and his longing for a stable family life.
Poet Abigail George recalls seeing a film about Karen Carpenter's life and identifying with the singer's struggles with an eating disorder as she herself had to cope with a difficult family life in South Africa.
Retired policeman John Weiss was reminded of the song when he attended the death of an elderly person at a care home. John looked at the deceased man's wedding photos and was struck by the brevity of life.
The singer Natasha Khan aka Bat For Lashes always loved The Carpenters and recorded her own version of We've Only Just Begun as part of an album where things don't end well for the young bride. Ironically, her version now features in a commercial for a British bank so the song has come full circle.
Randy Schmidt is the author of Little Girl Blue (The Life of Karen Carpenter).

SAT 00:30 Britain's Black Revolutionary (b00t4q0j)
There are still few black leaders in British political life - but life-long trade unionist Bill Morris finds that as far back as the London of 1848 the son of a slave was leading one of this countries most powerful political movements.
Few of us have heard of William Cuffay, a physically deformed tailor who lived in Soho.
And yet he was notorious in his day, to the extent that the political class of the 1840s dubbed him "the pore old blackymore rogue" as he went on to lead a political movement so powerful that Britain cowered behind its shuttered windows and the massed ranks of its armies.
Just as the thrones of Europe were yet again tumbling to revolution, the 1848 Chartist uprising in favour of democracy and equality in London threatened the status quo in Britain.
History records that an articulate democrat, William Cuffay, emerged as a key organiser of the mass demonstration that faced the Duke of Wellington's army in the demand for the vote. Revolution threatened the capital - but who was the diminutive tailor holding such sway?
Lord Morris follows a predecessor in the labour movement through his fascinating story - from son of a St Kitts slave to political leader, and ultimately into exile at Her Majesty's pleasure in Tasmania.

SUN 23:00 Mark Watson's Live Address to the Nation (b016lgkl)
Strength
Multi-award winning comedian, Mark Watson reignites his quest to improve the world,
As first broadcast LIVE in November 2011 - when he invited the audience join in (via tweets and messages) to work out how we can all make the world a better place.
He's nimbly assisted by:
Tim Key
Tom Basden.
Asking the big questions crucial to our understanding of ourselves and society - Mark kicks off with a look at "Strength".
Strength comes in many forms. We all need to be strong sometimes in life, whether we're dealing with an emotional fall-out or carrying a really heavy dog to the vet's. Some have inner strength, like people who survive divorce etc; some have outer strength, like guys who pull buses with their teeth in competitions.
But can strength be - ironically - a weakness? Strength can have its downsides. Our fondness for displays of strength has led to disastrous episodes like wars breaking out and 'Gladiators' being brought back. Mr Strong, in the Mr Men books, got strong by eating a barn full of eggs, but must have suffered terrible side-effects. How can we be strong, but remain human?

1. The Ancients
The mark of a civilised country is to know what it is to be civil.
But what if you don't know?
Across the ages, social commentators have written guide books to tell the uninitiated how to do the right thing at the right time in the right way.
And it's not just snobs that have published guides - the great Renaissance theologian Erasmus took time out from arguing with Luther to instruct children how to behave in company.
Nor is it yet another invention of Victorian England. 5,000 years ago, Ptah-Hotep set down on papyrus the rules of behaviour that all wise men should convey to their sons.
In the 3rd Millennium BC, in the Maxims of Ptah-Hotep, he addressed such crucial issues as rules for courteous debate, proper etiquette for a guest and advised strongly against gossip.

1. Othello
Fiona Lindsay listens in to the table talk of the actors and director as they begin work to bring Shakespeare's Othello from text to performance.
Fiona has spent years at the RSC working with actors and directors as they look afresh at the play texts to which we return again and again. What interests her is how new connections and insights are drawn from stories so well known that they have almost become national myths.
In the first in the series, Fiona takes her panel to The Brooksbank Schook in Elland, West Yorkshire, where students are hard at work bringing the play to life.
Her panel includes Carol Rutter, Professor of Drama and Shakespeare Studies at the University of Warwick, director and dramaturg Tom Cornford, and actors Jonjo O'Neill, fresh from a season at Shakespeare's Globe, and Karl Collins, a regular on Hollyoaks.
The panel is joined by a local audience as well as the students, and together they put the words from the page on their feet for the first time. They try out practical exercises to unearth new questions in order to see what surprising new connections they might be able to make about this tale of jealousy and masculinity.

2. York Mystery Plays
Fiona Lindsay and a panel of play-makers join in the table talk with the actors and director as they begin work bringing the York Mystery Plays from page to stage.
Fiona has spent much of her career working at the RSC with actors, writers and directors as they gather round the table to begin work getting a classic text to its feet and looking for new insights and connections in classic texts for contemporary audiences.
Though they have been performed regularly since the 1300s, it's only the second time in their near-700 year history that the York Mystery Plays have been staged in the Minster itself. It's an epic production, with many hundreds involved, including a large community cast of non-professional actors, joining the professional lead actor, Phillip McGinley playing Jesus Christ.
Joining Fiona Lindsay in the concluding programme, as they focus their work on the staging of The Crucifixion:
* Writer and adaptor Mike Poulton, who wrote the acclaimed stage version of Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies for the RSC
* Actor Philip McGinley whose credits include Game of Thrones and seasons at the National Theatre
* Director Phillip Breen.
They read the text out loud for each other and try out exercises to try and find surprising new insights into the greatest story ever told.
In what new ways can this play compel a modern audience?
Producer: Victoria Shepherd.

3. The Middling Classes
During the 18th century the growing middle classes needed a guide to behaviour.
The Rudiments of Genteel Behaviour defined much of our modern understanding of politeness including maintaining restraint around overt opulence.

The Woman-Machine
While the history of electronic music includes many notable men whose stories have been frequently celebrated, the genre has also provided a space for a wide range of extraordinary women to create a musical room of their own.
Working with machines meant being able to sidestep many of the hurdles that stood in the way of women aspiring to a musical career, such as access to orchestras, commissions and concert halls, and an over-riding failure to be taken seriously by the male musical gate-keepers. Elizabeth Alker examines the connections between early pioneers such as Eliane Radigue and Daphne Oram (who gained access to studios thanks to the Second World War), those musicians who followed in their immediate wake such as Suzanne Ciani and Laurie Spiegel, and today’s generation of female composers.
Anna Meredith, Holly Herndon, Afrodeutsche and JLin all speak with Elizabeth about their own work and the debt they owe their predecessors. Central to the story is the composer and academic Pauline Oliveros, who founded the San Francisco Tape Music Centre, and whose theories around deep-listening as a feminist act shape so much of the texture of the music created by the women and men who followed her.
Elizabeth argues this is music which has an emphasis on tone and texture. This lends it a particular quality, making it both distinct from its male equivalent and also profoundly beautiful and rich.
Presented by Elizabeth Alker
Produced by Geoff Bird

Val McDermid's comic crime series continues with a breakthrough to celebrate with fine wine - and a heart to heart with Alma and Jason over their work-life balance.
Does this look like the case can be closed with just deserts metered out in this comedy-drama set in a fine dining restaurant? With one more episode to go, we suspect there is more to make a meal of.

In the late 18th century we learned Britain and America aren’t just divided by a common language, but also by manners.
In 1883, Walter R. Houghton published American Etiquette and Rules of Politeness, defining the way modern America behaves.

Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte by Maurice Ravel
Ravel's beautiful Pavane For A Dead Princess touches many people.
While it is not actually about a dead princess it does evoke a sense loss. For Carla van Raay it symbolises the loss of innocence she experienced after sexual abuse as a child which led her to make some difficult life choices.
Deal Hudson played it to prisoners in Atlanta and was moved by their reaction. At an academy for troubled teenagers in California the Pavane had a similar effect.
Genevieve Monneris comes from the town where Ravel was born on the border with Spain. Her film Henri and Pat tells the story of three French airman who were stationed in York during World War Two. Just days before Henri's plane was shot down the three young men went to a concert of Ravel's music in York. So the piece has a strong emotional meaning for Genevieve whose own father was also stationed with the RAF in York.
Professor Barbara Kelly of the Royal Northern College of Music explains the background to the Pavane's composition and why it appeals to the emotions in such a powerful way.
Although it was written at the end of the 19th century it became more widely known in the 1920s. That was when a young woman called Lucia Joyce daughter of James Joyce danced to it with her avant garde dance group. The writer Annabel Abbs tells Lucia's tragic story of how her life ended in a mental asylum and how she almost became the imaginary 'dead princess'.

FRI 10:30 Fighting The Power of Pink (b010y39d)
Any parents of a little girl will tell you that they are strangely drawn to the colour pink.
But is it in their genes or is it all down to culture?
Kat Arney investigates, talking to parents, scientists, and the toy industry. She discovers that while women are more drawn than men to reddish shades of blue, boys and girls don't seem to develop different preferences until they are over the age of two. But long before then, they have very different preferences for toys.
So maybe we all just like different colours because we like the things that come in those colours.
Or maybe women really do prefer pink because in the distant past they needed to be able to see red berries against green leaves, while men needed to see brown bison against a blue sky?

FRI 22:00 Les Kelly's Britain (b016x3h7)
Episode 1
Les Kelly hosts a magazine show from hell.
Les is a cross between Jeremy Kyle and a slap in the face. He claims this is the only radio show for 'normal, decent people'. 'If you aren't decent, this is not the show for you,' says Les.
Les meets a father whose daughter needs a new kidney. Well, perhaps 'need' isn't quite the right word. She just wants one more kidney than all her friends.
Les also meets an expert on sanglanding. It's the dangerous new craze amongst young people - trouble is, no on knows what it is.
Kevin Bishop stars as Les Kelly.
