SAT 03:00 Sandi Toksvig's Hygge (m000q3tm)
Series 1

Bridget Christie and Clive Myrie

‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.

It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots.

As these cold Winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.

Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin, Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge.

In this episode, BBC TV newsreader Clive Myrie talks about finding respite in opera and poetry, while comedian Bridget Christie talks about the joy of running and her comforting but mis-shaped radishes.

Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.

SAT 07:30 The Adventures of Miss Barbara Pym (Omnibus) (m0027sw5)
Paula Byrne's joyous and illuminating biography of one of the 20th century's wittiest novelists.

Philip Larkin regarded her as the era's very own Jane Austen and yet today Barbara Pym is little known.

She lived through a period of social and political upheaval, and her novels charted the impact of these changes on women in the public and the domestic realms.

In the 1930s she went up to Oxford and spent time in Nazi Germany before the Second World War. In the 1950s, as a single woman, she went out to work and bore witness to the sexual revolution of the 1960s.

By the early 60s she had published six novels and, though she struggled for recognition from 1963 onwards, Pym continued to write and staged a triumphant comeback.

Her diaries are prefaced 'The Adventures of Miss Pym' emulating Henry Fielding's 'Tom Jones' and, in turn, bestselling author Paula Byrne has written her shrewdly observed biography of this courageous and funny novelist in the style of a picaresque adventure.

Omnibus of five parts abridged by Julian Wilkinson.

SAT 16:00 Utopia by Thomas More (b06y9b6t)
Thomas More's classic work of speculative fiction 'Utopia' has entered the culture so deeply that the name of his fictional island is the accepted term for our hopes and dreams of a better society.

Poet Michael Symmons Roberts dramatisation brings More's strange and enchanting island to life, told through the memoirs of Raphael Hythloday.

More goes on a diplomatic trip to Antwerp, to sort out a dispute in the commercial wool trade between Britain and the Netherlands. While he is there he meets an old man who is clearly widely travelled.

More complains about the petty politics of the trade dispute, and the old stranger bemoans the state of contemporary society. There is a better way, he says, and I have seen it.

The stranger introduces himself as the explorer and adventurer Raphael Hythloday, who at the height of his career of was sent out from Antwerp to explore an unmapped and remote part of the ocean. After months of sailing, he chanced upon an island society unlike any he had seen before. The island was called 'Utopia'.

Utopia fleshes out the story of Raphael's visit to the island, giving us vivid descriptions of the place and its society, its laws and social patterns and customs.

All the bearings for this new drama are be taken from the rules and descriptions of the island in More's book, and the clues he gives about Raphael's visit.

Neil Tennant

Singer and songwriter Neil Tennant is castaway by Kirsty Young.

Neil is best known as one half of The Pet Shop Boys which, over the past 20 years, has been one of Britain's most successful and popular bands, noted for combining dance music with witty lyrics and delivering them in a uniquely English style.

As a teenager growing up in Newcastle upon Tyne, he felt himself to be an outsider at school, but found friends in an amateur theatre company. Yet he always felt his life would be different to theirs and used to tell them that he would become a celebrated pop star.

But Neil was 30 when he finally left his day job as a writer for Smash Hits magazine to pursue the musical interests that had dominated his life since he was a teenager. By that time, he was anxious that he had missed the boat.

Now, as well as continuing to release records with The Pet Shop Boys, he has branched out into other forms of composition,.

He's written a live score for the film Battleship Potemkin, a West End musical and has collaborated with Robbie Williams and the Scissor Sisters, amongst many others.

It might be surprising to hear, but Sir David Attenborough has made it known over the years that rats are not his favourite animal.

In this piece, dedicated to his nemesis, with great wit and skill, the naturalist tells us of the living nightmare he endured whilst on location in a place infested with them.

If that wasn't enough, whilst making Life of Mammals, he devoted a whole programme to them - and to balance his own personal view went to an Indian temple where the rat is revered and even encouraged to swarm in vast numbers.

But in a clever twist of the story, as is the hallmark of David Attenborough, in no uncertain way he tells us why they should be respected.

American writer, HP Lovecraft (1890-1937) is recognised as one of the most significant figures in 20th century supernatural fiction. Contemporary horror writers, including Stephen King, often cite him as a major influence. His own outlook on life is mirrored in his writing.

"I am so beastly tired of mankind and the world that nothing can interest me unless it contains a couple of murders on each page or deals with the horrors unnameable and unaccountable that leer down from the external universes."

Lovecraft found living, the everyday stuff of life a painful experience. At every turn he felt disillusioned by what life had to offer.

Through his writing he sought to put into words these sentiments.

It's Jan's birthday and she's determined to do something unexpected.

Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small town in Northamptonshire.

Written by Katherine Jakeways.

As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three eyeing up the distinctiveness of each enviously.

Katherine Jakeways gives Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.

1. A Scholar's Mission

A Tudor scholar is entrusted by Henry the Eighth with a mission.

Richard Ovenden, director of the Bodleian Library, explains how attacks on libraries and archives have been a feature of history since ancient times, but have increased in frequency and intensity during the modern era.

Libraries are far more than stores of literature, through preserving the legal documents such as Magna Carta and records of citizenship they also support the rule of law and the rights of citizens.

Today, the knowledge they hold on behalf of society is under attack as never before.

This is a powerful history of civilisation and a manifesto for the vital importance of physical libraries in our increasingly digital age.

Burning the Books is also a very human story animated by an unlikely cast of adventurers, self-taught archaeologists, poets, freedom-fighters - and, of course, librarians and the heroic lengths they will go to preserve and rescue knowledge.

Richard Ovenden demonstrates fundamentally how knowledge of the past still has so many valuable lessons to teach us and we ignore it at our peril.

TUE 10:30 The Island (b01m5n7q)
"The Island" is what everyone calls it.

The Isle of Sheppey is a forgotten corner of Kent, an island 11 miles long tucked behind London at the mouth of the Thames and the Medway.

The harbourmaster looks out from her high-tech tower within a Napoleonic era fortress over thousands of craft who plough the strait heading for the port of Sheerness, laden with bananas and cars. At the far end of the island from the port, vast acreages of caravans and dumpy chalets spread in serried rows from the sea's edge, ready to house East-End families for the long summer break.

In between, birdsong-filled marshland fringes the water and the wind ceaselessly tears through the high-standing reeds. Sheppey boasts three prisons and once housed glass factories ('the Bottleworks') and Royal Doulton ceramics ('the Potteries'). The steelworks recently closed and now only Sheerness port, with its huge inflow and outpouring of motor vehicles and soft fruit, timber and wood-pulp keep industrial wheels turning. Unemployment is high, and prospects are low.

A modern road bridge now connects the island with the rest of Kent, which many regret; yet Sheppey remains a lonely place and not easy to reach; special, they say; strange, other.

Jean, Glenn, Ray and the rest of their large extended family have lived almost all their lives on Sheppey - they tell a tale of hard lives, tough times, and of a place they love, that has shaped their lives and that they'd not leave willingly.

3. Keep or Cull?

Decisions of what to keep and what to cull.

A 3000 year journey through the destruction of knowledge and the fight against all the odds to preserve it.

The knowledge they hold on behalf of society is under attack as never before.

At once a powerful history of civilisation and a manifesto for the vital importance of physical libraries in our increasingly digital age, Burning the Books is also a very human story animated by an unlikely cast of adventurers, self-taught archaeologists, poets, freedom-fighters - and, of course, librarians and the heroic lengths they will go to preserve and rescue knowledge.

Richard Ovenden demonstrates fundamentally how knowledge of the past still has so many valuable lessons to teach us and we ignore it at our peril.

Utopias

First published in 1516, Michael Symmons Roberts examines the intellectual legacy of Thomas More's celebrated book, 'Utopia'.

It is a book that generated an idea that has been hotly contested throughout the hundreds of years since its release.

More had been on a trade mission to Antwerp, and spent much of his time talking to fellow humanist scholars like Erasmus about the notion of an ideal society and what it might look like. Out of those conversations came the book, a slippery tale that blurs fact and fiction and which has left readers ever since trying to fathom whether More was indeed presenting his island of Utopia, where equality is paramount and greed attacked, as a model society or as a salutary tale.

Half a millennium on, Michael Symmons Roberts heads to Antwerp himself to find out more about the actual book, that so many make reference without ever having opened its pages. He finds out that partly for safety's sake (the text being one on level a critique of contemporary England) it was published abroad and in Latin; he also hears about its great popularity, how it led many to try and set up their own perfect communities, and examines the irony that More would rather have seen this book about an equal society burned rather than seeing it translated into the vernacular and therefore made available to all.

Along the way, Michael also eavesdrops on figures from the BBC archives describing what their personal Utopias might look like - including Tony Benn, Jeanette Winterson, Aldous Huxley, Nawal El Saadawi and Ian Banks.

Producer: Geoff Bird

4. Theft of Knowledge

Aspects of the theft of knowledge.

A 3000 year journey through the destruction of knowledge and the fight against all the odds to preserve it.

Stephen Fry on PG Wodehouse

Stephen Fry nominates his hero PG Wodehouse, a writer who he says simply cheers him up like no one else.

Fry wrote to his hero when he was a schoolboy and his most treasured possession is a signed photograph which reads:

"To Stephen Fry, All the best, PG Wodehouse."

PG Wodehouse was a self-made man, he began as a bank clerk, married a chorus girl and was interned by the Nazis. He wrote some of the most entertaining novels, stories, plays and lyrics of the 20th century and created enduring characters; the most popular being Reginald Jeeves and Bertie Wooster.

Stephen makes the case for why PG Wodehouse is a great life.

To help him he is joined by Dr Sophie Ratcliffe Associate Professor in English, University of Oxford and author of 'PG Wodehouse - A life in Letters'.

Even the most repressive regimes produce humour - sometimes laughter can be the only freedom left.

One secret policeman asks another: "So, what do you think of the Government?" His colleague looks around before replying: "The same as you, comrade." The first policeman swiftly declares: "In that case, it's my duty to arrest you."

There are plenty more gags like this one as Michael uncovers the vital role humour has to play in the most bleak of global economic and social conditions - including the most dangerous joke ever told.

Series 1

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock and Rose & Rosie

In this episode BBC Stargazing's Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock helps point out the constellations we can see when there is no light pollution and Youtubers Rose & Rosie try to embrace digital detoxing and the joys of glamping.

Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.

FRI 10:30 The Wonderful Weightless World of the Flexidisc (b00sgbcr)
Paul Bayley examines history of the flexidisc, a cheap, lo-fi way of releasing a record between the 1950s and 90s.

Long before the invention of the MP3, there was a way of getting hold of music, speech, and other audio sensations, free of charge, in the form of flexidiscs. Originally developed in the 1930s to play at 78rpm, by the 1960s, seven-inch, 45rpm flexidiscs were so cheap to produce, and so light and bendy, that they were often given away free with a magazine. In the Soviet Union, though, where flexidiscs were called roentgenizdat, and were recorded on disused medical x-ray sheets, the audio was usually of an illegal nature, such as jazz music, or, later, punk rock.

In telling the story of the flexidisc, we'll hear plenty of music, some of which is now valuable (such as the Rolling Stones Exit on Mainstreet Blues, given away with New Musical Express in 1972).

In tracking down the story of flexidiscs, presenter Paul Bayley meets collector Jez Randell, journalist Ian Shirley, and the novelist Tim Lott, who co-founded Flexipop magazine in the early 1980s (which gave away a free flexi with every issue).

The programme includes extracts from flexidiscs galore, including several advertisements for products as diverse as crisps, hair pieces and rat poison, music from big band jazz to beat groups to punk rock, and some of the most famous recordings made on flexidisc including Beatles fanclub records, Private Eye's satirical flexidiscs and the sound of humpback whales, from the world's biggest circulation flexidisc ever.

FRI 22:00 What? Seriously?? (m0027syk)
6. Votes, Greed, and Cheese

In this episode, Dara and Isy are joined by the star of Great British Menu Louisa Ellis, to learn about the the power of cheese - with some diverting conversations about goose trading, feasting, and weaponised dairy.

What? Seriously?? is a new podcast which combines comedy with quirky history, hosted by Dara and Isy who unravel an extraordinary real-life tale each week with the help of a celebrity guest.

The stories are definitely true, but also kind of unbelievable at the same time - the sort of stories that make you go ‘What? Seriously??’ when you hear them, but you resolve to tell them in the pub the first chance you get.

Across the series, Dara and Isy will be joined by I’m A Celeb winner Georgia Toffolo, the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson, the broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Master Chef star Louisa Ellis, Miles from The Traitors, the comedian Richard Herring, the astronaut Helen Sharman, and Slow Horses star Chris Chung.

‘What? Seriously??’ with Dara Ă“ Briain and Isy Suttie and special guest Louisa Ellis
Format co-developed by Dan Page. Story compiled by Gareth Edwards and Dan Page.
