The threat to reduce the staff of the three English orchestras by 20% has not been lifted, but it is being reconsidered.

Scarborough Fair

"Tomorrow we're going in search of a song and in search of a dream of England which has travelled right around the world" - Will Parsons

No one can be sure of the true origins of the song Scarborough Fair. It's a melody of mystery, of voices of old, of ancient days. It's travelled through land and time, drawing singers and listeners in where ever they maybe.

For Will Parsons and Guy Hayward it's a song that has inspired a pilgrimage through a landscape that is embodied in the lyrics. Setting off from Whitby Abbey, they journey to Scarborough on foot, sensing the song as they go, learning to sing it, interpreting it in a new way just as thousands of traditional singers have done throughout time.

This too is the landscape of Martin Carthy, the 'father of folk' who has made his home along the Yorkshire coast. It was from this legendary singer that Paul Simon first learnt Scarborough Fair, creating a version that came to represent a generation continuing its journey far and wide, weaving its spell in many different guises, never truly being pinned down.

Decades on Harpist Claire Jones recorded a version of her own. Arranged by her husband, the composer Chris Marshall, hers is a very personal journey through unexpected illness to recovery. Whilst for Mike Masheder it is a song that brings memories of his wife Sally, who approached the journey of life with love and equanimity.

"It can change or stay the same. And the more it changes, the more it stays the same" - Martin Carthy

With expert contribution from Sandra Kerr, musician and lecturer at Newcastle University School of Arts and Culture.

SAT 00:30 Farewell Doctor Finlay (b07k0k4m)
2. NHS - the early years

Conclusion of the story of general practice - from the 1950s to the still-troubled present day.

With Dr Margaret McCartney and medical historians and GPs.

The NHS was a huge improvement for the general population, for hospitals and hospital doctors. But it was rather different for GPs as their private fees disappeared and their workload multiplied with all the chronic disease that had previously gone untreated. General practice was under-funded and under-loved.

Scathing reports of dingy, ill-equipped surgeries, along with repeated bouts of GP unrest, finally brought about the Family Doctors Charter in 1966, leading to a much better period of subsidised health centres and staffing.

Modernisation came thick and fast from the late 1980s, with some GPs controversially given budgets to choose services for their patients. Relaxation of the "out of hours" obligation saw practices forming co-operatives to handle evening and weekend calls and, from 2004, the responsibility for providing 24 hour care was removed from GPs entirely.

But unrest has continued, with many training places unfilled, GP posts vacant, and some practices closing altogether.

This final programme explores how the profession evolved into its present state.

Producer: Mike Hally.

SAT 03:00 Sandi Toksvig's Hygge (m000py9s)
Series 1

Grayson Perry and Sindhu Vee

‘Hygge’ (pronounced hoo-ga) along with ‘tak’ (the word for ‘thank you’ that we learnt from watching Borgen and other Scandi dramas) is one of the few Danish words to have become known to us in the UK.

It’s a word that means comfort, contentment and cherishing the simple pleasures in life. In lifestyle magazines it’s faux fur throws, cups of hot cocoa and scented candles; but to the Danish it has simpler and less commercial roots.

As these cold Winter nights draw in after a difficult year of scant comfort, it feels like we all need some hygge and legendary Dane, Sandi Toksvig, will do her best to bring it to you.

Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge.

In this episode, artist Grayson Perry talks about how identity might sometimes need an audience and how hobbies and learning new things can bring deep joy, while comedian Sindhu Vee talks about her children's part Indian and part Danish upbringing and how she has come to understand the Danish philosophy.

Additional material from Simon Alcock and Charlie Dinkin.

SAT 07:30 Lev's Violin by Helena Attlee (Omnibus) (m0027kyw)
Helena Attlee first heard Lev’s violin played at a small music festival in Wales.

The music being played was Klezmer, Jewish music from Eastern Europe. It blew her right off her feet.

The violinist said he’d been told the instrument came from Cremona, the heart of violin making in Italy, home to Antonio Stradivarius.

Helena sets off on a quest to find out where it was actually made. She travels to Cremona, to the Italian forests where the Alpine spruce grows, and the timbers come down by river.

She tries to find out if it might have been a “church violin” played in the great cathedrals and palaces of the Popes and the Medicis, and how it got to Russia where it was bought by Lev from a Roma musician, perhaps via the Nazi confiscation and sale of violins belonging to Jewish musicians.

Finally a dendrochronology test reveals its true origins.

Omnibus of five parts written by Helena Attlee.

Episode 4

Waiting in for a delivery tests the patience of even the most well-meaning of daughters.

Sheila Hancock narrates the bittersweet adventures of the residents of a small town in Northamptonshire.

Written by Katherine Jakeways.

As is well-known: Yorkshiremen wear flat caps and Essex girls wear short skirts; Liverpudlians are scallies and Cockneys are wideboys. Northamptonians gaze wistfully at these stereotypes and wish for an identity of any kind and a label less ridiculous than Northamptonians. Northamptonshire, let us be clear, is neither north, nor south, nor in the Midlands. It floats somewhere between the three, enviously eyeing up the distinctiveness of each.

Katherine Jakeways gives Northamptonshire an identity. And she waits, eagerly, for her home-county to thank her. And possibly make her some kind of Mayor.....

1. Ambition

Wife and mother to a dynasty of kings, crusader, prisoner and formidable political operator.

This is the story of the young Eleanor of Aquitaine.

At 16 she has one ambition - to become the Duchess (and ruler) of the Aquitaine. But her father has other ideas...

Though Eleanor of Aquitaine lived 900 years ago, she is very modern woman.

At 16 she inherits the richest province in France and plans to run it her own way, as her grandfather promised she could. The men around her have other ideas – a young woman with so much power is far too great a threat.

There is a kidnap attempt, a midnight escape on horseback, bribery, an armed invasion and a forced marriage to the sexually repressed young French king.

Even then, Eleanor finds a way to challenge the status quo and march to her own drum, always determined to decide her own destiny. Intelligent, tough, imaginative and witty, Eleanor first scandalises then subtly reshapes the world she inhabits.

This gains her a host of admirers as well as, inevitably, powerful enemies determined to bring her down. Somehow she stays one step ahead of them all.

It’s not that Eleanor think likes a man – it’s that the men have no idea how to contain someone with power who thinks like a woman.

Adrian Moore continues his exploration of two and a half millennia of philosophical thought on infinity.

Discover the brilliant but tortured German mathematician, Georg Cantor, who devised a way of distinguishing between infinitely big numbers and of performing calculations with them.

His work was revolutionary but, as Adrian discovers, it greatly polarised opinion amongst his late 19th and early 20th century contemporaries.

As Adrian takes us with him deep into the world of infinite set theory, he enlists the help of Mary Leng, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at York University, and four very familiar twentieth century friends.

7. Crisis and Uncertainty

Adrian Moore’s series on philosophical thought on infinity finds him mired in a near meltdown in mathematics.

Adrian tells the story of the controversy caused by the work of the German mathematician, Georg Cantor, on the infinite.

In a world of paradoxes, we meet the nun who can't decide whether to pray for herself. Her dilemma is beautifully explained by Marcus Giaquinto, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at UCL, in conversation with Adrian.

And we find out how an associated paradox, first posed by one of the giants of 20th century philosophy, Bertrand Russell, devastated the career of another German mathematician and philosopher.

The arguments of the early 20th century no longer plague modern mathematics in the way that they did. As Adrian explains however, by subjecting the infinite to formal scrutiny, mathematicians have ended up confronting puzzles at the very heart of their discipline.

The Performer - part 1/2

Like many adolescents, Matthew lives in a fantasy land.

Stephen Fry stars in a two-part monologue.

Written by William Humble

But whilst other 13-year-old boys loved John Lennon or Mick Jagger, Matthew’s top of the pops is Laurence Olivier.

He's always been intrigued by the story of his father getting stuck in London and going to the theatre to see the great Sir Laurence in Terence Rattigan’s play The Sleeping Prince.

Surprising, because In fact, as Matthew and his doting mother observe, Dad just goes to work and comes home again.

But one day Dad vanishes and Matthew starts to wonder if it might have something to do with the night he went to the theatre.

When father and son finally meet again, Matthew discovers things that shock him initially and then threaten his relationship with his mother.

A play about family, father-son relationships and theatre itself, especially English theatre from the 1950s onwards. Olivier, Vivien Leigh and Terence Rattigan feature heavily, and a number of other theatre figures are evoked too, from Max Miller to Noel Coward and Dora Bryan.

8. The Cosmos

Does space go on for ever? Are there infinitely many stars?

These are some of the questions Adrian Moore explores in this episode in his series about philosophical thought concerning the infinite.

With the help of the theories of the Ancient Greeks through to those of modern cosmologists, Adrian examines the central question of whether our universe is finite or infinite.

For most of us, looking up at the stars gives us a sense of infinity but, as Adrian discovers, there is a strong body of opinion which suggests that space is finite, albeit unbounded. This is a difficult idea to grasp, but by inviting us to think of ourselves as ants, astrophysics professor Jo Dunkley attempts to explain it.

Adrian also tackles the idea of the expanding universe and the logic that leads cosmologists to argue that it all started with a big bang, and may all end with a big crunch.

Finally, we discover from cosmologist John Barrow how the appearance of an infinity in scientists’ calculations sends them straight back to the drawing board. The infinite, which the Ancient Greeks found so troubling, has lost none of its power to disturb.

Lights, Camera, Inaction: An Existential Guide to the Movies

From Woody Allen to the Truman Show via Groundhog Day and Taxi Driver.

Matthew Sweet examines the many and varied ways that cinema communicates existentialist ideas.

Both in ways we expect and in ways that we don't (step forward Bridget Jones).

Cinema is very good at explaining Existentialism and capturing its various moods and feelings; but its deeper than that. The language of existentialism with its heroes, choices and crises sounds suspiciously like the language of screenwriting. They are, after all, both ways of trying to create meaning and narrative out of nothing.

The blank page that confronts a screenwriter confronts all of us as we decide how to live. As Jean Paul Sartre, Simone De Beauvoir and Albert Camus would tell us - the blank page is us; the film of our lives is waiting to be made.

Films included in the programme:

The Music Box (1932) directed by James Parrott, produced by Hal Roach

Groundhog Day (1993) directed by Harold Ramis; produced by Harold Ramis and ‎Trevor Albert

9. Death and Immortality

In his series on thought about infinity through the centuries, Adrian Moore has considered the topic through the lenses of philosophy, theology and mathematics.

Now, in this penultimate episode, the focus is firmly on us.

Adrian ponders our finite nature and confronts the question of whether, if we could, we really would want to live for ever. He brings us the Czech composer Janacek’s opera, with its eponymous heroine Elina Makropulos. Her father, the court physician, has procured an elixir of life for her but, far from making her eternally happy, her long life has become unbearably tedious.

Some philosophers fully sympathise with Elina Makropulos and celebrate our finite nature. Others lament it. But as Adrian discovers, there is consensus on one point – the fact that one day our life will end doesn’t rob it of meaning.

Indeed, it is our very sense of our own finite nature, argues John Cottingham, Professor Emeritus at Reading University, that produces what St Augustine called ‘the restlessness of the human heart’ - our constant desire to reach out for more.

Series 1

Lemn Sissay on Bob Marley

Lemn Sissay's reverence for Bob Marley is rooted in his own childhood in care, his feeling that both Marley and himself were born as outsiders.

Lemn was fostered up until the age of 12, but was then abandoned by that family and placed him in care. A series of children's homes followed. Lemn didn't know any black people, but the music of Bob Marley gave him a sense of hope and of identity.

As an adult Lemn traced his birth parents - both were from Ethiopia, a place of deep spiritual significance to Bob Marley.

For Lemn, Marley seemed to cross all boundaries speaking to people around the world, whatever colour they were, with a message of self-empowerment, through the new sound of reggae music, which he played a great hand in creating. As Lemn says - a muse inspires urgency. 'What must be written, must be written'.

Lemn speaks with the poet and reggae star Linton Kwesi Johnson, to the photographer Denis Morris who's taken some of the most iconic pictures of Bob Marley.

Lemn meets Chris Salewicz, author of Bob Marley, The Untold Story. And two people from his past, Adele Jones who knew him as a young burgeoning poet and Linden - the man Lemn credits with introducing him to Marley all those years ago.

Series 1

Bridget Christie and Clive Myrie

Deep in the Danish countryside in her cosy wood cabin, Sandi will explore the concept of hygge and the Danish way of life and welcomes celebrity guests who join her in front of the open fire to explore what brings them hygge.

In this episode, BBC TV newsreader Clive Myrie talks about finding respite in opera and poetry, while comedian Bridget Christie talks about the joy of running and her comforting but mis-shaped radishes.

10. Where does this leave us?

Adrian Moore reaches the end of his journey through two and half millennia of philosophical thought about the infinite.

In this final episode, with the help of writers and philosophers as diverse as Rene Descartes, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Iris Murdoch, Adrian returns to the theme of our finite nature and how that is fundamental to our sense of what is infinite.

He considers the relation between the infinite and the transcendent and examines where the desire to look for something beyond ourselves belongs in a secular society.

Throughout the series, Adrian and his cast of philosophers have made connections, performed calculations and looked up at the stars in their attempts to clarify what we mean by the infinite. But, his history tells us, it all comes back to us and how we relate to what surpasses our finite nature.

FRI 22:00 What? Seriously?? (m0027l0w)
5. Duels, Feuds and Stolen Solos

In this episode, Dara and Isy are joined by the broadcaster Stuart Maconie to learn about inventive instruments - with some diverting conversations about jazz, quiz shows, egos, and intellectual property.

What? Seriously?? is a new podcast which combines comedy with quirky history, hosted by Dara and Isy who unravel an extraordinary real-life tale each week with the help of a celebrity guest.

The stories are definitely true, but also kind of unbelievable at the same time - the sort of stories that make you go ‘What? Seriously??’ when you hear them, but you resolve to tell them in the pub the first chance you get.

Across the series, Dara and Isy will be joined by I’m A Celeb winner Georgia Toffolo, the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson, the broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Master Chef star Louisa Ellis, Miles from The Traitors, the comedian Richard Herring, the astronaut Helen Sharman, and Slow Horses star Chris Chung.

‘What? Seriously??’ with Dara Ó Briain and Isy Suttie and special guest Rhys Nicholson
Format co-developed by Dan Page. Story compiled by Gareth Edwards and Dan Page.
Producer: Laura Grimshaw
Executive Producer: Jon Holmes
An unusual production for BBC Radio 4

FRI 23:00 Meet David Sedaris (b0901fqt)
Series 6

The Perfect Fit; Audience Q&A

The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:

* An essay about the wilder end of his fashion sense, The Perfect Fit

* A lively audience question and answer session.

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.

David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.

Producer: Steve Doherty

A Giddy Goat production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in August 2017.

It might also take a guillemot or two.
