Running Up That Hill
"And if I only could,
I'd make a deal with God,
And I'd get him to swap our places..."
True stories of what Kate Bush's song Running Up That Hill means to people around the world, from its original release in 1985 to its return to the charts in 2022.
Long distance runner Lee Perry takes himself on a marathon the morning after his mum dies, with Kate Bush in his headphones for all 26 miles of his run.
Musician and record producer Georgia Barnes talks through the making of her synth-pop cover of the song, from the opening drone to the iconic synth line.
Graeme Thomson, author of 'Under the Ivy: The Life and Music of Kate Bush', shares insights into Bush's studio set-up during her making of the Hounds of Love album, and reflects on why Running Up That Hill continues to resonate down the generations.
Songwriter and trans activist Órla Bligh sees the song as an anthem of empathy, and a call-to-action for people to try to understand the experiences of others.
And finally, Astrid Jorgensen, conductor and founder of ‘Pub Choir’, gets 1600 people under one roof to sing Running Up That Hill together.

SAT 00:30 The Danube Ain't Blue, It's Green (b07ws0dy)
Rainer Hersch champions the most popular waltz Johann Strauss ever wrote – the Blue Danube.
In Vienna, he hits the tourist trail and finds that everyone knows it, from South Koreans to Californians, while hard-working musicians there can play it over 400 times a year.
It’s always performed as the inevitable encore at the New Years’ Day Concert in Vienna, and Franz Bartholomey, former principal cellist with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, thinks it’s "simply the most beautiful waltz in the world".
Rainer touches on the finer points with conductor Alfred Eschwé as they sing their way through it, discovering that it’s not just "da-da-da-da-daa, tchk-tchk, tchk-tchk" - but Strauss combined five separate waltz melodies in the piece.
He also finds out that, as Spike Jones described it in his musical parody, the waters of the Danube aren’t blue, they’re green, and a rather murky green at that.
Also murky was one period of the waltz's history, when Goebbels decided that the music of Strauss was an ideal palliative for the Nazi war machine, though he had to remove all traces of Strauss’s Jewish ancestry in order to make the music acceptable.
Musician Ernst Theis and Strauss biographer John Suchet trace the Blue Danube's history, while Piers Lane shows how it has become one of the pianist's favourite encores in its devilish transcription by Schulz-Evler.
A Far Shoreline production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in October 2016.

SAT 03:00 Prepper (m00026x2)
Series 1
Bugging Out
Trump. ISIS. The Courgette Crisis. Signs of civilisation’s fragility are all around.
No wonder the Doomsday Clock just nudged closer to midnight. In this fearscape, more and more ordinary people are wondering how they’d cope if everything we take for granted (law and order, access to healthcare, iceberg lettuces in Sainsburys) was taken away.
Preppers - a large and rapidly growing global community - have taken this thought one step further. They’re actively skilling-up, laying down supplies and readying themselves for the end of the world, in whatever form it comes.
Indeed, a prepping shop just opened in Newquay. And if people in Cornwall are prepping, it’s time to worry.
Imagine if Woman’s Hour made a podcast about preparing for the end times. Prepper follows neurotic, debt-ridden Rachel and hard-as-nails ‘Churchill in Spanx’ Sylvia, working class Mancunians who prep and podcast, sharing knowledge with their community, and showing off just how Armageddon-ready they are.
Told through their podcasts from Sylvia’s garage and featuring ‘apoco-tips’, ‘end of days drills’ and interviews with preppers from around the world, Prepper comically explores how two mismatched women live with the possibility of the end of days, and how they bond over their determination to survive. And fend off zombies.

SAT 03:45 The Mystery of Edwin Drood (m000qjd3)
5. Disappearance
Kate Dickens tells the story of her father’s final and unfinished novel, a fast-moving thriller set in the cathedral town of Cloisterham.
It is Christmas and all is fine until Edwin - the young man who appears to have it all, a beautiful and charming prospective bride, the promise of an engineering job in Egypt - disappears.
Presumed murdered. Could it have been impetuous Neville Landless? Or Edwin’s uncle Jasper?
On Christmas Eve in Cloisterham. Edwin and Neville appear to have resolved their differences with John Jasper.
But on Christmas morning the whole town learns that Edwin has disappeared. If a violent crime has been committed they think they know who is to blame.
Dickens’ last, unfinished, novel is set in a phantasmagorical drug-fuelled landscape where nobody is who or what they say they are.
Whilst writing it, Dickens was driving himself towards exhaustion and death through obsessive public performances of the most lurid parts of Oliver Twist - revisiting his first successful novel whilst struggling with his last, fearful that his creative well is drying up and that this story would never be brought to a close.
Written by Charles Dickens and dramatised by Mike Walker.

1. Return Home
Michael Moran’s life was forever transformed by his days of glory in the War of Independence.
Now, a farmer in the Irish countryside, Moran is still fighting - with his family, his friends, even himself - in a poignant struggle to come to terms with the past.
However, as he grows older, his wife and daughters must confront how their own lives have been irrevocably shaped by this complicated and contradictory man.
An intimate story of a family living on the Irish border, under the thumb of a former soldier turned tyrant in his own home.
Written and abridged in ten parts by John McGahern.
Read by Lloyd Hutchinson.
John McGahern was born in Dublin in 1934 and brought up in the West of Ireland. He was a graduate of University College, Dublin. He worked as a primary school teacher and held various academic posts at universities in Britain, Ireland and America.
In the opinion of The Observer, John was 'Ireland's greatest living novelist'. He was the author of six highly acclaimed novels and four collections of short stories, and was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including a Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship, the American-Irish Award, the Prix Etrangère Ecureuil and the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

6. Mysterious Gentleman
Rosa has an upsetting meeting with John Jasper, while a mysterious white-haired gentleman appears in Cloisterham and forms an alliance with young Deputy Winks.
Narrated by Dickens’ daughter Kate, witness to her father’s final weeks, and whose fascination with this story leads her to look into its unsolved conclusion to find clues about her father’s character.

MON 09:30 Join the Dots (b0952b9y)
1. The First Dot
Janet Ellis explores the etymology of the word 'dot'. It's all to do with pus and phlegm.
A 40,000 year old dot that may help change our understanding of the behaviour of Neanderthal man and, move over colouring books, dot to dot is the new craze.
Janet tries, literally, to find the first dot.
The simple dot is one of the first marks ever made. Later, the dot helped make sense of the written word and, in the digital domain, its use helps everything work. Somehow, from being a word probably uttered infrequently, it is now absolutely part and parcel of our vocabulary.
Each programme in this series circles a different aspect of this simple mark.
From the morse code that could have saved the Titanic, to Harold Pinter's love of those three dots... the first Braille newspaper, royal polka-dot socks, to the conceptual art of a young Aboriginal artist - just some of the dots you'll encounter when you join the dots.
Contributors include:
* Dr Tania Styles of the Oxford English Dictionary
* Professor Paul Pettitt from the Department of Archaeology at the University of Durham.
Former Blue Peter presenter, Janet Ellis has presented several features for BBC Radio 4, appears regularly on Broadcasting House reviewing the papers, and on Channel 5's The Write Stuff.
Her first novel, The Butcher's Hook, was published in 2016 and longlisted for the prestigious Desmond Elliott Prize. Her second, How it Was was published in 2019. She has been a judge for the Costa New Novel Prize and was awarded an MBE for services to charity and theatre in 2016.

MON 10:30 Syrena Songs (b06vkcf6)
Syrena Records was created in 1904. Selling millions of discs to new audiences hungry for shellac delights.
Opera singers, Cantors, political humour and Yiddish theatre.
Success allowed their founder Juliusz Feigenbaum to invest in state of the art recording technology.
By the time independent Poland was reborn in 1918, Syrena was well placed to shape the sound of a new nation.
Hot tango and jazz were performed by superb musicians and singers, mostly Jewish, mostly of a generation breaking away from the old world and facing the new. Adam Aston, Hanka Ordonka, Henryk Wars, Micheslaw Fogg and others, cut disc after disc before playing in the elite nightclubs of Warsaw.
In 1939, invasion and war ended Syrena and the Polish nation. Its factory and archives destroyed, its artists murdered or scattered in exile.
But there was one last tune to play.
Henryk Wars, former musical director at Syrena, formed an orchestra that became the soundtrack of Poles in exile and in military uniform. From Tehran to Palestine to the fortress of Monte Cassino, those musicians and singers that had once been the heart of Syrena now played songs of a lost nation, creating the anthemic Red Poppies of Monte Cassino.

In this episode, Joanna complains they’re ‘in a rut’, so Roger plans a spontaneous day out but is thwarted at every turn. Undeterred, he cooks her a ‘date night’ supper and they talk about their long marriage.
Written for Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam by award-winning comedy writer and journalist Jan Etherington.
Jan has been married for 34 years to Gavin Petrie, with whom she has created many hit Radio 4 Extra and TV series (Second Thoughts, plus Next of Kin, Faith in the Future, The Change).

7. Investigation
Rosa leaves for London where she is looked after by Mr Grewgious, while Dick Datchery continues his investigation in Cloisterham.
Narrated by Dickens’ daughter Kate, witness to her father’s final weeks, and whose fascination with this story leads her to look into its unsolved conclusion to find clues about her father’s character.

Janet Ellis gets close to the canvas to see how this elemental mark has inspired great world art, from the dots of the Australian Western Desert to 19th Century Paris.
The simple dot is one of the first marks man ever made. From being a word we uttered infrequently, the advent of digital has made it one we use all the time.
The dot. We wear it, listen to it, read it and gaze on it. We send it through the air and under the waves. Each programme in this series circles a different aspect of this simple mark.

TUE 10:30 Wilson, Keppel and Several Bettys (b017528q)
Barbara Windsor tells the story of the popular variety act Wilson, Keppel and Betty.
The trio formed one of the greatest eccentric dance acts of all time. Their names are so familiar and yet amazingly their fascinating story has never been told on radio before. As with many tales of the stars of music hall and variety, it is one which is shrouded in contradictions and myth.
The programme includes new research into their early days as a duo in Australia and America - and reveals how the act was catapulted to stardom when Wilson and Keppel met Betty.
Liverpudlian Jack Wilson and Irishman Joe Keppel were doleful, gangling, moustachioed and skinny-legged. They wore parodies of Eastern dress, usually a fez and a short nightshirt, revealing their scrawny legs. The third member was the glamorous Betty - who over the years was played by several different women.
They performed a side-splitting sand dance based on poses familiar from Egyptian tomb art, with Betty as the central seductress. Their complete seriousness added to the hilarity.
From the early 1930's the trio became an established feature of British variety shows and were chosen for several Royal Variety Performances. Because the act was visual and hence instantly understandable to anyone, they received many offers from Europe.
In 1938 it was reported that whilst performing at the Berlin Wintergarden they upset Goebbels who was disgusted at the display of bare legs, calling them 'bad for the morals of Nazi Youth'. Mussolini, however, is said to have loved the act.

TUE 22:00 Ahir Shah's Seven Blunders of the World (m00268zs)
Episode 1
Inspired by an email from his 74 year-old father, comedian Ahir Shah introduces us to the The Seven Blunders of the World.
In 1925, Mahatma Gandhi published an article in the journal Young India, outlining what he called the Seven Social Sins. They were wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, religion without sacrifice, and politics without principle.
One hundred years on, the world is a very different place (this was written on a computer, for crying out loud!). Yet, Ahir reckons Gandhi's century-old list of the great societal blunders still feels relevant today. Could they teach us anything going forward?
Join Ahir (and sometimes his dad, who started this whole thing), as he explores these seven blunders through his trademark combination of philosophical inquiry, political vigour and sweet gags.

Elvis Presley Comeback Special
Paul Morley tells a parallel story of Elvis and America, from the vantage point of the King's finest hour in 1968.
"I've got to do this sooner or later," Elvis says sheepishly, "so I may as well do it now."
And so the 1968 Comeback Special begins: his quiff defying gravity and his leather jumpsuit chafing, as he bursts into an elemental rendition of Heartbreak Hotel. It had been one of his first singles 13 years before, initially recorded when he was still a teenager living in the Jim Crow South at the beginning of rock and roll.
Much had happened in the meantime: JFK, the Beatles, the hippies and Detroit soul. And Elvis had become a different person, depressed, addicted and increasingly irrelevant.
So by 1968, after his stint in the army, the uninspired films and the years of absence from the stage, the Comeback Special was an opportunity to resuscitate Elvis's career, to claw back his status as a powerful, credible force.
And it did, fleetingly. He was fabulous, and his discography is never better showcased than on that day.
But it also marked the point at which it became clear that the King was fragile.
He was 33, a new father, and he would never be this good again.
Paul Morley believes the '68 Comeback Special shows us Elvis at his best. But also that it offers a vantage point from which to look backwards, forwards and outwards to a changing America - remembering where the hillbilly kid had come from and poignantly aware of where he would end up.

As Rose becomes acquainted with life in the Moran household, she learns some unsettling truths her new husband.

9. Truth
This episode sees Neville learn the truth of Rosa’s meeting with Jasper, while Dick Datchery and Deputy make an alarming find in the cathedral crypt.
Mike Walker’s dramatisation is narrated by Dickens’ daughter Kate, witness to her father’s final weeks, and whose fascination with this story leads her to look into its unsolved conclusion to find clues about her father’s character.

Hell Is Other People
Trump.

5. The Dancing Dot
Janet Ellis explores our love affair with the polka-dot and what it says about us.
Contributors include film and TV costume designer Leonie Hartard, designer Cressida Bell, and a clown, Mattie Faint.

Plaisir d'Amour/Can't Help Falling in Love With You
Marianne Faithfull recalls the classical French Love song which went on to inspire a 1960s hit record by Elvis Presley.
'Plaisir d'Amour' somehow found its way through 18th century orchestration (Hector Berlioz) and 1960's folk revival, to an unexpected re-invention as Elvis’s 'I Can't' Help Falling in Love with You'.
Written in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, the song muses on the pleasures and pains of love and was inspired by a poem in Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian's novel 'Célestine'.
For 17 year old Marianne Faithfull it was a song of innocence, recorded in a tiny booth in London’s old Decca studios whilst happily pregnant with her first child.
Meanwhile, author Julia Donaldson and husband Malcolm busked it on the streets of Paris. This was in the summer of 1969 and police hid in alleyways, still fearful of students following the 1968 riots.
Inspired by Elvis, West Point Military Academy Freshman Andrew Scott learnt to pick the tune on guitar – helping him win the heart of his wife.
For Henry and Christine Wallace, it summed everything up "It was what I was looking for, someone to share my life and the words 'take my whole life too was in tune with what I wanted'.

FRI 10:30 Ravi Shankar: Sitar Hero (b00rmrpt)
Nitin Sawhney explores the life of the Indian musician Ravi Shankar.
Ravi Shankar is one of the greatest musicians the world has ever seen. In the West his outstanding career has sometimes been overshadowed by his brief association with the Beatles but he has been performing and composing at the highest level for over 70 years.
The man who first brought Indian classical music to an international audience was once compared to Mozart by the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin. But it wasn't an easy journey to success - it took an arduous process of study and practice. Fellow musician and fan Nitin Sawhney meets his hero to discuss how he did it.
With contributions from: Ravi Shankar's daughter Anoushka, one of India's biggest music stars Zakir Hussain, George Harrison's wife Olivia, The Who's Pete Townshend and music historian Ken Hunt.

FRI 22:00 What? Seriously?? (m0026mrk)
Suits, Shells, and Survival
In this episode, Dara and Isy are joined by the astronaut Helen Sharman to learn about how humans learned to survive in space - with some diverting conversations about glitter, cat statues, hibernation, and shell suits.
What? Seriously?? is a new podcast which combines comedy with quirky history, hosted by Dara Ó Briain and Isy Suttie, who will unravel an extraordinary real-life tale each week with the help of a celebrity guest
Dara and Isy unearth stories that are definitely true, but also kind of unbelievable at the same time - the sort of stories that make you go ‘What? Seriously??’ when you hear them, but you resolve to tell them in the pub the first chance you get. The twist is that Dara and Isy have absolutely no idea how these strange-but-true tales will unfold and we’ll all be trying to figure it out together – or Dara and Isy will just go off on funny flights of fancy that are tangentially related to the story. They will be drip-fed the nuggets of narrative by a special guest expert who might just know something about the subject.
Across the series they will be joined by I’m A Celeb winner Georgia Toffolo, the Aussie comedian Rhys Nicholson, the broadcaster Stuart Maconie, Master Chef star Louisa Ellis, Miles from The Traitors, the comedian Richard Herring, the astronaut Helen Sharman, and Slow Horses star Chris Chung.
‘What? Seriously??’ with Dara Ó Briain and Isy Suttie and special guest Helen Sharman.
Story compiled by Gareth Edwards and Dan Page.

FRI 22:30 Mark Steel's in Town (b00s782k)
Series 2
Gateshead
Comedian Mark Steel returns to visit more UK towns to discover what makes them and their inhabitants distinctive.
He creates a bespoke stand-up show for each town and performs the show in front of a local audience.
As well as shedding light on the less visited areas of Britain, Mark uncovers stories and experiences that resonate with us all as we recognise the quirkiness of the British way of life and the rich tapestry of remarkable events and people who have shaped where we live.
Mark travels to Gateshead to perform to locals who under no circumstances want their town to be confused with Newcastle. Whilst up there Mark enjoys a memorable night out in a local pub; a telling-off in the Baltic Art Gallery, a visit to the Angel of The North and an ugly car park that some people want to preserve because of its role in a grisly murder.
Written by Mark Steel.
With additional material by Pete Sinclair.
Producer: Julia McKenzie.
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in May 2010.
FRI 23:00 Meet David Sedaris (b08x9f9t)
Series 6
Of Mice and Men; A Can of Worms
The globetrotting, trash-picking, aisle-rolling storyteller shares more words of wit and wisdom:
* Urban myths, the truth and what it means to be called a liar in Of Mice and Men.
* A Can of Worms, a story about overheard conversations and the right way to eat pie.
With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America's pre-eminent humour writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.
David Sedaris's first book, Barrel Fever (1994), which included The SantaLand Diaries. was a critical and commercial success, as were his follow-up efforts, Naked (1997), Holidays on Ice (1997) and Me Talk Pretty One Day (2000). He became known for his bitingly funny recollections of his youth, family life and travels, making semi-celebrities out of his parents and siblings.
David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premier at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). He has been a contributor to BBC Radio 4 since 1996.
Producer: Steve Doherty
