SAT 00:30 Thelma & Michael: Love In The Cutting Room (b07z6w01)
Nicholas Wapshott tells the story of how film director Martin Scorsese unwittingly acted as cupid in one of cinema's greatest love stories.

While working on Raging Bull in 1980, Scorsese introduced his American film editor Thelma Schoonmaker to his boyhood hero, the celebrated British director Michael Powell.

Despite their 35 year age difference - Powell was 75 - the two fell in love and were married until Powell's death in 1994.

Using clips from some of his best known films and tributes from academics and critics, Nicholas puts Michael Powell's heritage in perspective and, in exclusive interviews with Scorsese and Schoonmaker, explores the brilliance of the two lovers and how their unlikely relationship developed in the cutting room.

Martin Scorsese assesses Powell's work on classic movies like The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp and The Red Shoes, and recalls introducing him to his long time cutting room colleague.

SAT 07:30 The Call of the Wild by Jack London (Omnibus) (m000gf0z)
Jack London's The Call of the Wild is set in Yukon, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, when strong sled dogs were in high demand.

The central character of the novel is a dog named Buck and the story opens at a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California.

Buck is stolen from his home and sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He becomes progressively feral in the harsh environment, where he is forced to fight to survive and dominate other dogs.

Jack London spent almost a year in the Yukon, and his observations form much of the material for the book.

The story was serialised in The Saturday Evening Post in the summer of 1903 and published as a book a month later. Its great popularity and success made a reputation for London. As early as 1923, the story was adapted for film, and it has seen several more cinematic adaptations since.

It's often thought of as a children's book and indeed the current film has turned it into a story more suitable for the young. But the original writing is fierce, poetic, beautiful and atmospheric. It appeals to the core of everyone's nature. Exciting and moving in equal measure, it's a sublime adventure story.

SAT 23:00 Lemn Sissay's Origin Stories (b07x20c1)
2. Mutatis Mutandis

Batman was an orphan; Lisbeth Salander, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, was an orphan; Superman was an orphan and a foundling. Cinderella was a foster child. Darth Vader - well, they can't all be winners.

Taking a comic and poetic angle, Lemn Sissay compares reality against the treatment of children raised in care, orphans and foster children in popular culture. Because it surely says something about how we view them that we create so many for fiction?

In this episode, Lemn looks at the children at Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, otherwise known as The X-Men Academy.

More specifically, Rogue and Wolverine, whose dark and tragic origins lie long before either of them reached the School. But there, Xavier - Professor X - sought to teach the children how to control their powers and make the most of them.

Lemn's experiences in children's homes in Wigan was not the same. What difference would it have made if it had been?

Lemn also talks to comedian and care leaver Sophie Willan, who spent most of her childhood in foster care and assisted accommodation.

What superpowers did she discover she had, removed from the security of family?

Written and performed by Lemn Sissay.

Producer: Ed Morrish

Edna O'Brien

Writer Edna O'Brien is castaway for a second time by Kirsty Young.

She was born and raised in a small village in County Clare, where the only books in the house were prayer books which sat alongside her father's bloodstock magazines. Her mother thought writing was in essence sinful and tried fiercely to stop her becoming an author.

She was living in England when she published her first novel, The Country Girls, in 1960. It was a huge hit and was critically well received - but in Ireland she was decried and her book was burnt in the streets.

Edna lived in London for most of her adult life, but continued to draw on her Irish background for inspiration - she said: "it's in my roots, and when I dream at night it's the place I go".

Edna O'Brien died on 27th July 2024 aged 93.

SUN 06:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b00yrg3g)
Series 2

Kiwi

New Zealand had several species of flightless bird living across the islands, all of which are now extinct, bar one.

The Kiwi has become one of those species iconic of the country, like the Koala to Australia, the Giraffe to Africa and the Alpaca to South America.

Historically, New Zealand didn't have ground predators such as wild cats and stoats - which allowed birds to exploit living on the ground. Being flightless in New Zealand was a good way to be a bird.

Having filmed Kiwis, Sir David Attenborough muses on the niche the Kiwi occupies on the ground. He argues the Kiwi behaves more like a mammal than a bird, but what mammal do you think, in his view, the Kiwi most resembles..?

Shuntaro Tanikawa - A Poet's Japan

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archive and selects Shuntaro Tanikawa - A Poet's Japan featuring a rare encounter with Japan's greatest living poet.

And Daljit reads another poem from his Poetry Extra Book of the Month: Collected Poems by Wendy Cope.

Shuntaro Tanikawa is Japan’s most widely read and acclaimed poet and has been called one of the world’s ‘active poetic volcanoes’.

Recorded at the age of 88, he continued to be at the cutting edge of modern poetry in Japan, where he remained ever since his first collection, Two Billion Light-Years of Solitude, was published in 1952.

In the book's prefatory poem, Tanikawa's mentor, Tatsuji Miyoshi, introduced him as a young man who 'has come from a distant land, unexpected … bearing the weight of being alone'. Today, he compares his age to tree rings: ‘No matter how old I grow, the younger me still exists in the centre ring.'

Recorded in 2020, Tanikawa invites us into his world, and talks about his life and work in the company of his friend and translator since 1967, William Elliott, an American poet who has lived in Japan for more than 40 years, and his more recent translators Nishihara Katsumasa and Takako Lento.

Along the way, we peer into the soul of modern Japan and reflect on nearly 90 years of its history.

Readings from Shuntaro Tanikawa: New Selected Poems and The Art of Being Alone.

Featuring music by Kensaku Tanikawa, Toru Takemitsu and Ryuichi Sakamoto, with lyrics by Shuntaro Tanikawa.

Shuntaro Tanikawa died aged 92 on 13th November 2024.

Jayde Adams: From ASDA to Diva

Jayde Adams is a Bristol born comedian and entertainer who used to work in Asda.

Jayde has shot to stardom due to her innate confidence, cracking singing voice and unique personal take on modern life. With three powerhouse Edinburgh shows behind her and a blossoming presenting career on TV she has shot from the fish counter at ASDA to fully fledged diva and is keen to tell everyone about it.

Jayde has a classic case of "you can take the girl out of Bristol, but can't take Bristol out of her" - she says what she sees and is unapologetic about it. It's part of what's got her where she is today - a working class girl riding high on the often middle class wave of show business.

She's an upstart, she's new money, she's wearing a sequined dress and singing at you while lying across a piano. But beyond all that, she's a (relatively) normal person with a fascinating journey.

In this special, Jayde combines her wit and world class set of pipes with show-stopping music by Olivier Award winner Richard Thomas (Jerry Springer: The Opera).

Jayde will give her unique slant on class, body positivity and being from Bristol. Weaving her hilarious brand of entertaining yet personal stand-up with catchy numbers, Jayde shares how she went from working at ASDA to becoming a fully fledged diva.

Jayde's main aim is to bring out the diva in all of us, not just the few. It's dying to escape, and who are we to stop it?

It's probable that John Shakespeare would have taken his son to see the elaborate shows put on in her honour.

MON 09:30 A Cause for Caroling (b03lp80w)
6. A Second Golden Age

Choral conductor and scholar Jeremy Summerly continues the story of the Christmas Carol in Britain in this ten-part series.

Jeremy reaches the 19th century and publications of old folk carols from what was thought to be a dying tradition.

However, by mid-century, with the Tracterean movement in the Church of England at its height the carol and the singing of carols was once again hugely popular.

It was the publication of a 'Christmas Carols New and Old by Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer in 1867, that marked the height of another caroling golden age. However, it was now big business and there were reputations at stake when folk carol collectors saw their work hoovered up by the might of Bramley and Stainer.

Jeremy also tells the story of the little 16th century Finnish manual 'Piae Cantiones' that provided a series of memorable re-workings of 15th century words and melodies, including In Dulce Jubilo and Good King Wenceslas.

MON 10:30 Angels In the North (b016ld4z)
In the early 1970s, five of Britain's leading Artistic Directors had a vision.

Tired of regional theatre-goers being treated as second-class citizens, they wanted to breathe life into the country's cultural landscape.

They wanted to create a theatre outside London with national standards - not another testing ground for West End transfers - but a distinct, individual voice for the regions.

From the humble beginnings of the Century and 69 Theatre Companies, Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre opened in 1976.

Designer Richard Negri's innovative plans - inspired by the interior of a beehive - took shape in the city's old Cotton Exchange building, a magnificent building in itself, symbolic of Manchester's strength as the power house of the industrial revolution.

A seven-sided, glass-walled module, literally suspended from huge marble pilllars in the Great Hall, its pioneering design broke free of the confinements of the proscenium arch. It remains the world's largest theatre-in-the-round.

Actress Gabrielle Drake chats to founding Artistic Director Braham Murray about the success of the theatre over its 35 year history - the calibre of actors, directors and new work it has attracted, and the effect the theatre has had on the region. We hear how, in 1996, the theatre was badly damaged by an IRA bomb, but carried on producing plays in the city until the fully re-furbished theatre opened two years later.

We trace the roots and development of regional theatre in Britain with The Guardian theatre critic Lyn Gardner, Artistic Director of Manchester's Library Theatre Chris Honer, and Professor of Theatre Tony Jackson.

We look at funding issues in light of the recent biting Arts Council cuts and discuss the way forward for British theatre.

Children of the 1960s, they're still free spirits, drawn together by their passion for music and each other. Their recognisable warm and witty conversations dance around everything from health scares, jealousy and confessions, to TV incompatibility and sourdough bread.

In this episode, Joanna has a health scare.

She worries that she's not lived a life of achievement and will never have a blue plaque, or win a Booker Prize. Then they both receive very sad news.

Written for Joanna Lumley and Roger Allam by award-winning comedy writer and journalist Jan Etherington.

Jan has been married for 34 years to Gavin Petrie, with whom she has created many hit Radio 4 Extra and TV series (Second Thoughts, plus Next of Kin, Faith in the Future, The Change),

2. Married in Haste

In the summer of 1582, William Shakespeare was 18 when he met 26-year-old Anne Hathaway.

Anne was her own boss. Her father had died, leaving her some money, making her free to make her own decisions. Anne offered Will a compelling dream of pleasure.

They became lovers, later marrying when she fell pregnant with their first child. Twins were to follow.

Yet Shakespeare was to turn his back on them all and made his way to London…

7. Folk Carol Survival and Revival

Jeremy Summerly returns to the Gallery tradition that was squeezed out of 19th century Church worship but steadfastly refused to die.

It's now in rude health in several parts of the country but nowhere is it more energetically sustained than in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

With the guidance of Dr Ian Russell who holds folk carol festivals and the enthusiasm of pub carolers who sustain the tradition Jeremy shares a pint and a clutch of fuguing carols which flower happily in the 21st century while having roots in the 18th and 19th.

He also finds out about an American offshoot of the gallery style that's been preserved in the icy blasts of Pennsylvania, USA since it was first seeded there in the middle of the 19th century.

The choral conductor and scholar continues his series tracing the history of the Christmas Carol in Britain.

It's a journey full of song describing the history of a people who needed expression for seasonal joy in the coldest, hardest time of the year.

8. The Birth of Nine Lessons with Carols

In the eighth programme of his series charting the development of the Christmas carol in Britain, Jeremy Summerly reaches the critical moment at which the 19th century enthusiasm for carols sung in church resulted in a vehicle in which they could take a leading role.

It was developed by Bishop Benson of Truro who, in 1880 found himself holding services in a huge wooden shed while a new cathedral was being built next door.

To celebrate the new diocese and capture the enthusiasm he recognised in the nonconformist tradition of carol singing in Cornwall, Benson developed a narrative service running from Adam's original sin to the birth of Christ and the impact of the word made flesh.

Jeremy visits Truro and then follows Benson's service to the moment in 1918 when a war-wearied Dean of King's College Chapel, Cambridge, Erich Milner-White decided to use the service as part of his college's Christmas celebrations. The changes he made survive to this day.

Series Description:

The Christmas carol is as popular now as it was when carolers celebrated the birth of Edward III in 1312. Back then the carol was a generic term for a song with its roots in dance form, nowadays only the strictest scholar would quibble with the fact that a carol is a Christmas song.

But the journey the carol has taken is unique in music history because each shift in the story has been preserved in the carols that we sing today. Go to a carol concert now and you're likely to hear folk, medieval, mid-Victorian and modern music all happily combined. It's hard to imagine that happening in any other situation.

Jeremy Summerly follows the carol journey through the golden age of the medieval carol into the troubled period of Reformation and Puritanism, along the byways of the 17th and 18th century waits and gallery musicians and in to the sudden explosion of interest in the carol in the 19th century. It's a story that sees the carol veer between the sacred and secular even before there was any understanding of those terms. For long periods the church, both catholic and protestant, was uneasy about the virility and homespun nature of carol tunes and texts. Nowadays many people think that church music is defined by the carols they hear from King's College, Cambridge.

He traces the folk carol in and out of church grounds, the carol hymn, the fuguing carol and the many other off-shoots, some of which survive to this day and many others which languish unloved but ready for re-discovery.

It's a journey full of song describing the history of a people who needed expression for seasonal joy in the coldest, hardest time of the year. And however efficient the heating system may be, the carol still generates warmth. Much of that is to do with the positive nostalgia of this music.

That nostalgia is in part due to the fact that carols are one of the first kinds of song children actually sing rather than hear. Many favourite carols were actually written for children; Once in Royal David's City the most familiar example. Another factor is the concentration in the texts on the humanity of nativity with tunes garnered from the uninhibited world of folk song and ballad.

The series title is taken from a Thomas Hardy poem in which he ponders of a Darkling Thrush why it should chose to sing - 'so little cause for carolings of such ecstatic sound' - is the question asked. This series is an attempt to answer why carols remain so popular and familiar to so many. In fact Hardy himself, in his first novel Under The Greenwood Tree, went some way to answering his own question when he described the Mellstock Quire singing at Midnight on Christmas Eve:

'Then passed forth into the quiet night an ancient and time worn hymn, embodying a quaint Christianity in words orally transmitted from father to son through several generations down to the present characters, who sang them out right earnestly."

Jeremy brings the series up to date with the story of the famous Nine Lessons and Carols service broadcast by the BBC since the 1920s but born originally in Truro. It's a service that commands a worldwide audience measured in many millions, but as Jeremy concludes it has left an imbalance in the appreciation of our caroling tradition, one that has always had one foot in the pub and another in the choir stalls.

WED 10:00 Glenn Miller: 70 Years of Mystery (b04ttvh4)
Len Goodman investigates the phenomenon of Bandleader Major Glenn Miller.

He was one of the biggest selling recording artistes between 1939 and 1943 and who years later, still remains one of the top sellers in the world.

Why? Is it because of his romantic music? Or does the mystery that still surrounds his mysterious disappearance on a foggy day 80 years ago in December 1944 draw us like a moth to a flame?

The facts surrounding the meteoric rise and phenomenal success of bandleader Glenn Miller between the years of 1939 and 1944 have been extremely well documented over the years. What is more interesting is why the music of Glenn Miller achieved even greater popularity after World War II and has continued to attract new listeners around the world for the last 80 years.

One hugely important factor has to be the mysterious disappearance of Major Glenn Miller whilst on a routine flight to France across the English Channel on December 15th 1944. He took off and simply vanished into the fog.

A heady cocktail of the romantic Miller music laced with nostalgia and a huge dollop of wide-eyed fascination as to what actually happened in that small aircraft on that fateful foggy afternoon must be key to all of this. Plus, speculation as to what Glenn Miller would have gone on to achieve in music and entertainment had he arrived safely in France and continued his career after the war.

THU 09:30 A Cause for Caroling (b03ls15l)
9. Import and Export

The penultimate programme in Jeremy Summerly's series tracing the history of the Christmas carol in Britain. Jeremy picks up the story in the first half of the 20th century with carols from all over the world becoming more popular in this country, much to the irritation of Ralph Vaughan Williams who continued to champion the folk tradition, albeit in a refined choral form.

This was a time when the grandeur of Victorian carolling gave way to a leaner aesthetic with the Oxford Book of Carols being published in 1928, the same year in which the BBC broadcast the King's College, Cambridge Nine Lessons and Carols for the very first time.

As it became an established favourite, the carols used, gathered in many cases over centuries, become known both nationally and indeed internationally.

THU 10:30 The Sound of Soweto (b082hg3c)
1. The Sound of Defiance

In a two part series Thabiso Mohare explores the musical life of Soweto, South Africa's largest and most famous township, which sprawls over a large area outside Johannesburg.

From 1905 onwards Soweto housed migrant black workers and black people forcibly removed from their homes in the city under the apartheid government, so drew in people, cultures, languages and traditions from all over the country, and became a hotbed of black culture.

Townships were supposed to feel isolated - tribal separation was encouraged, while urban mixedness and hybrid cultures were legislated against, but in Soweto (an acronym of South West Townships), certain kinds of music represented defiance against the provincial existence imposed by the apartheid machine, and jazz in particular remained a symbol of black urbanity and of the political influence of black Americans.

The unique neighbourhood of Sophiatown in Johannesburg, a mixed area with a vibrant jazz scene, was one of the communities partly dispersed to Meadowlands, Soweto when Sophiatown was razed during the apartheid era to make way for white housing, but the love of music, and what it represented, survived through clubs and jazz appreciation societies.

In the first programme, Johannesburg-based poet Thabiso Mohare looks at the musical heritage of Sophiatown, and talks to Sowetan musicians including Sibongele Khumalo and Jonas Gwangwa, about the intersection in their lives of music and politics, and their memories of streets filled with a rich mix of sounds from gramophones and radios to church choirs, workers choirs, and bands playing music from jazz, mbaqanga and soul to rock.

10. Ring in the New

Jeremy Summerly concludes his history of the carol in Britain pondering the success of new carols over the last century. While King's College, Cambridge organist Stephen Cleobury insures a supply of newly commissioned carols for his massive international audience Jeremy wonders whether the popular songs from Berlin's 'White Christmas' to Slade's 'Merry Christmas' don't help sustain a more genuine caroling tradition.

He also recalls his own first experience of carols at Lichfield cathedral where John Rutter's 'Shepherd's Pipe Carol' was an astonishing discovery for the eager young chorister.

And Jeremy also ponders the continued appeal of the carol and why, while it's been in decline throughout its history, it continues to thrive.

Series Description:

From Sowetan Soul stars influenced by the black power movement of the 70s, to platinum selling acapella groups making waves around the world today, he talks to musicians about the way they have interpreted and adapted their rich musical heritage, asking how important the strong tradition of dissent in South African music is to them, and looks at why influences both local and global have always come into play in Soweto.

Featuring interviews with Sipho 'Hotstix' Mabuse, Mandla Mlangeni, BCUC and The Soil.
