SAT 07:30 Why Women Read Fiction (Omnibus) (m000dhmw)
Women far outnumber men as buyers, borrowers and readers of most kinds of fiction, and make up the majority of festival attendees, reading group members and online book bloggers.
In this wide-ranging book, Helen Taylor draws on over 500 interviews and questionnaires to explore what, when and how contemporary women read, and why fiction in particular is so precious to them.
She looks at how women readers draw on their fiction reading to tell the stories and mark the milestones in their own lives, pass childhood favourites on to children and grandchildren, and forge and sustain friendships.
She hears from women about their childhood memories of learning to read, often taught by women in their family or at school, and about how books have become an indispensable part of their adult lives.
Her book analyses the special appeal and changing readership for genres like romance, erotica and crime, and looks in detail at the continuing appeal of lasting classic novels like Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre.
Helen Taylor is Emeritus Professor of English at Exeter University, has taught and published widely on women's writing, is a regular chairperson at literary festivals and was the first Director of the Liverpool Literary Festival. Her books include 'Scarlett's Women: Gone With the Wind and its Female Fans', 'Circling Dixie: Contemporary Southern Culture Through a Literary Lens' and 'The Daphne du Maurier Companion'.
The reader, Lucy Briers, has recently appeared in the TV shows Victoria and Gentleman Jack. She played Mary Bennet in the memorable 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice

BAFTA Winners
Bill Nighy
Kirsty Young introduces an archive episode revisiting the castaway choices of a BAFTA winning and Academy Award nominated actor.
Bill Nighy is castaway by Sue Lawley.
Originally from Caterham in Surrey, Bill left school at 15 without any qualifications and ended up working at his local employment office.
He hoped to become an author and began work on The Field magazine as a messenger boy, but then ran away to Paris at seventeen to write a novel. This venture failed and he ended up begging on the streets before returning to Britain and the Guildford School of Drama and Dance.
His first film role was as a delivery boy in Joan Collins' steamy film The Bitch. He's featured in numerous stage, TV, and radio dramas including the acclaimed Men's Room in 1991 and, more recently, in State of Play, where he played a newspaper editor.
His career has been described by some critics as a slow burn rather than a beacon, although he's now widely recognised as achieving the acclaim he deserves. In 2004 he won Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAS for his role as Billy Mack, a washed up singer in the film Love Actually.

The Confession of Nigel Planer
Actor, comedian and broadcaster Stephen Mangan presents a comedy chat show about shame and guilt.
Each week, Stephen invites a different guest into his virtual confessional box to make three confessions - with remarkable storytelling and surprising insights. In this unconventional chat show, he wants to see what really makes them tick by finding out what they are ashamed of!
Stephen and his guest reflect with empathy and humour on why we get embarrassed, where our shame thresholds should be, and the value of guilt.
In this episode, Nigel Planer - writer, actor and one of the original ‘alternative comedians’, co-founder of The Comic Strip - wrestles with three episodes from his life that have been plaguing his conscience for decades - cool shoes and a disastrous voyage among them.
Written and presented by Stephen Mangan.

2. Abbey Road
Paul Morley visits the world's first purpose built recording studio, and possibly the most famous of all – Studio 3, Abbey Road.
Inaugurated by Sir Edward Elgar, the studio was used to record everyone from Adam Ant, The Bolshoi and Nick Cave, to Pink Floyd and The Beatles.
With the help of engineers and producers, composers and those that keep the studios running on a day to day basis, Paul explores how the relationship classical music has with the recording studio differs from the one that pop music enjoys.
Series exploring the history of popular music through some of the iconic recording studios in which classic albums were created.
Without recording studios, music as we know it would simply not exist. They play a crucial role in the structure and fabric of the music recorded there - the sounds moulded by the studio space itself.

Gagarin and the Lost Moon
On 12 April 1961, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became an explorer like none other before him, going faster and further than any human in history, into what had always been the impenetrable and infinite unknown.
Raised in poverty during the Second World War, the one-time foundry worker and a citizen of the Soviet Union became the first human to fly above the Earth in the vastness of space.
In doing so, he became an instrument in The Cold War – an ideological battle between the superpowers: East versus West, communism versus democracy.
Dr Kevin Fong tells the story of how 27-year-old Yuri Gagarin came to launch a new chapter in the history of exploration and follows the cosmonaut’s one-hour flight around the Earth.
The Soviet Union's triumph in 1961 was the event that galvanised the United States to win the Space Race: to send the first people on the Moon by the end of the decade. Yuri’s own ambitions to voyage to the Moon were frustrated by his political masters, a faltering Soviet lunar space program and two tragic accidents.
As well as presenting archive recordings, Kevin talks to space historians and writers:
Tom Ellis, historian at the London School of Economics
Stephen Walker, author of ‘Beyond’
Slava Gerovitch, author of 'Soviet Space Mythologies’ and ‘Voices of the Soviet Space Program’
Andrew Jenks, author of 'The Cosmonaut who couldn’t stop smiling’
Cathleen Lewis, curator at the National Air and Space Museum
Actor Stewart Campbell is the voice of Yuri Gagarin. Tony Turner is Soviet space program founder Sergei Korolev. Nicholas Murchie is General Nicolai Kaminin, head of cosmonaut training.
Technical production is by Giles Aspen and Jackie Margerum.
Co-writer and producer: Andrew Luck-Baker of the BBC Radio Science Unit.

The Kubrick Test
Kerry Shale’s drama tells the true story of his encounter with one of cinema’s most influential figures.
Stanley Kubrick is undoubtedly one of the greatest film makers of all time with a succession of masterpieces from A Clockwork Orange to 2001, Dr Strangelove to The Shining. He’s also known for an exhaustively detailed working process and utter lack of compromise.
For many years, the great director’s methods were shrouded in mystery. So when, in 1987, a young actor gets an invitation to enter Kubrick’s hidden world, he leaps at it.
And, of course, gets more than he bargained for.
Kerry Shale plays himself in this darkly comic reflection on the nuts and bolts of true genius.

Written in the late 1920s when du Maurier herself was just twenty, It reveals some of the dark themes that she explores in the novels that made her name.

History rarely remembers who came second.
If Yuri Gagarin had so much as sneezed on the 12th of April 1961 the honour of being the first man in orbit would have gone to his training partner, Gherman Titov.
But Gagarin didn't sneeze and a disappointed Titov had to climb back down the launch tower.
A few months later, Titov did launch successfully in Vostock II. He completed 17 earth orbits (got space-sick, ate and slept) and is still the youngest person ever to have gone into space. But he's largely unheard of because he wasn't 'first'.
In Anita Sullivan's play, originally broadcast to mark the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's flight, the story of the two cosmonauts - their training, their selection, the flight and its aftermath, is told through Titov's eyes as he waits at Chkalovsky Airbase for Yuri to return from what should have been a routine training flight on the 27th March 1968.

Amadeus
Paul Gambaccini talks to the team behind the rich, musical extravaganza, Amadeus, released in 1984, which won 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.
It's remembered for its brilliant interpretation of the life and genius of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the shrill giggle of Tom Hulce and the cleavage of his wife.
Director Milos Forman, who had left Czechoslovakia as a political refugee, chose Prague as the best 'double' for Vienna - only to find himself followed by spies for his former homeland as a suspected anti-communist.
Forman recalls how he first met Sir Peter Shaffer backstage at the National Theatre in London where, Sir Peter confirms, Forman promised there and then, to make a film out of Shaffer's masterpiece of the stage.
Simon Callow who played Mozart in the original London stage production was the only actor to appear in the Hollywood version - but probably enjoyed himself more because of it.
Gambaccini also talks to Sir Neville Mariner, choreographer Twyla Tharp, producer Ken Tuohy and the actor Elizabeth Berridge, who was told she'd got the part as Mozart's wife as she most resembled a 'landlady's daughter'.
The story of how the Cold War and the greatest composer on earth came together to create a musical and cinematic masterpiece.

Stuart Mitchell's Cost of Living
2. Stuart Gets a Golden Ticket
Comedian Stuart Mitchell examines his own cost of living crisis. This time Stuart looks back at his time working for the Treasury with Gordon Brown and ponders whether the status of that job was worth the internal conflict that it gave him.
Each episode, Stuart looks at a chapter of his own unbelievable, but absolutely true, life story.
A working class boy, with huge aspirations, Stuart achieved everything he dreamed of and more. However, he soon came to realise that the cost of having everything was more than he was willing to pay. A morality tale featuring his time working in Westminster, moving to a highly paid job in banking and willingly losing it all to find happiness; Stuart will make us all question the true cost of living.

Artificial Intelligence puts Jazz’s musical career in jeopardy when a robot clone of Jazz begins storming the charts. Human Jazz must beat his electronic counterpart for a spot in the UK Top 40 and convince the London Palladium that HE is the real Jazz Emu.
Jazz Emu: musician, 70s lothario-type, ex-Hollywood foley artist and internationally renowned idiot.
