SUNDAY 17 DECEMBER 2023

SUN 00:00 Rappaccini's Daughter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (b00qxcff)
Giovanni is a student who moves into a new room overlooking a strange garden full of lush and outlandish plants.

The garden belongs to Dr Rappaccini, a renowned scientist and expert in poisons.

But from the moment Giovanni sees Beatrice, the doctor's daughter, in the garden, his interest becomes a dangerous obsession.

Dark sci-fi romance, written in 1844 by acclaimed American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Starring Peter Marinker and Joseph Cohen Cole.

A tale of mystery, a love story, and a haunting allegory. It's fascinating early science fiction, but its world of cold scientists and sinister experiments connects directly with our own fears about Frankenscience and biological weaponry.

It's also an eerie and dreamlike fable - the mesmerising poisoned garden into which Beatrice entices Giovanni has echoes of the Garden of Eden. Powerful archetypes and questions of sin and the ambiguous power of knowledge ripple beneath its surface.

Dramatised by Martyn Wade.

SUN 10:45 David Attenborough's Life Stories (b00yjtg4)
Series 2

Canopy

If you walk into a rainforest you are immediately met by quite literally a forest of trees.

All the tree trunks look like cathedral pillars, smooth and wet from the rain.

Not a single branch emerges from the trunk for tens of metres - and when they do you see a breath-taking interlocking jungle of branches and leaves, ferns and flowers and all number of creatures great and small.

The canopy is a bonanza of tropical forest life, in the bright light and gentle breeze - a far cry from the dark and humid underworld of the forest floor.

Not surprising then that Sir David Attenborough knew this would be a perfect place to film wildlife.

SUN 22:00 Jacob Hawley's Welcome to Britain (m0005mgs)
Jacob Hawley is a BBC New Comedy Award Finalist - a tattoo-emblazoned young man from a working class, leave-voting town.

He now boasts an arts degree, a vegetarian girlfriend and an almost convincing concern for climate change - so not far off Billy Elliot.

Jacob's stand-up show shares material from his 2018 Edinburgh show 'Howl' so that foreigners and, if they’re listening, aliens, can find out first hand what Britain is really like.

This is all based on Jacob's experiences of the monotonous suburbs, the insular small towns, the hypocritically righteous city and their inhabitants.

MON 21:30 Midnight in Peking by Paul French (b01j5fw2)
1. Murder

On a frozen night in January 1937, in the dying days of colonial Peking, the body of a young woman was found in the shadows of a haunted watchtower. It was Pamela Werner, the daughter of the city's former British consul Edward Werner.

A horrified world followed the hunt for Pamela's killer but the police investigation drew a blank and the case was forgotten amid the carnage of the Japanese invasion. Only Pamela's father carried on, employing a network of private investigators to follow the murder trail into Peking's notorious Badlands and back to the gilded hotels of the colonial Quarter.

Seventy-five years later, deep in the Scotland Yard archives, British historian Paul French accidentally came across the lost case file prepared by Edward Werner and, through his fresh eyes, uncovered the killer's identity.

An evocative account of the end of an era, the book spent seven weeks in the South China Morning Post's Top 10 bestsellers list.

Written by Paul French.

TUE 07:30 Ed Reardon's Week (b01pfwhg)
Ed Reardon at Christmas

It Started in August.

Celebrate Christmas with favourite curmudgeonly author, Ed Reardon, and his faithful companion Elgar.

It's Christmas Day and where is Ed Reardon spending it? The scepticism of his writing class back in August about where Ed would be hanging his stocking, wasn't entirely misplaced, and receiving a Christmas card from one's girlfriend signed without a kiss and her surname added in brackets probably doesn't bode well.

However, all is not lost as Ed's jocular round robin email to his family inviting himself to join their Christmas celebrations wasn't all in vain - there was at least one member of the family who didn't bounce it back.

So, following assurances that his requirements would be minimal, his levels of merriment would be Dionysian and a small caveat about what he regards as permissible Christmas viewing Ed is encouraged to think that he won't be spending Christmas alone.

Or he could be looking at a day with only Elgar, an Oxo cube and a cinnamon stick.

Sing Christmas

On Christmas Day 1957, the BBC made a ground-breaking hour-long live broadcast, transmitting Christmas songs from around the British Isles. Texan folklorist and broadcaster Alan Lomax was the host.

The broadcast was a mixture of ancient carols, folk songs, calypso, West African music, dixieland, skiffle, children's carols and glees. Singers across the country contributed live performances, with Lomax sitting at the centre of the web in a Birmingham studio. It was thrilling, innovative and daring.

This musical time capsule gathers the memories of those involved to recapture the flavour of this pioneering BBC broadcast.

FRI 20:00 ...And Please Can I Have A Unicorn And World Peace? (m000qjzl)
Miles Jupp enters a winter wonderland as he travels to Santa’s post office in the Arctic Circle.

He's been given special permission to join the elves who help Santa with around half a million letters that arrive each year from around the world. Donning a green and red elf hat, and braced by snow and sub-zero temperatures, Miles gets to work sorting letters under the watchful eye of Elf Riitta.

In this programme, we follow Miles on his magical trip and discover what lies in the hearts and hopes of children – and sometimes adults – who write to Santa.

Other global outposts of Santa's postal service include the UK’s Royal Mail and, in the USA, the town of Santa Claus, Indiana.

Joanna Espin from The Postal Museum in London reveals how historic letters to Santa can offer a social history of the times, sharing how a child in the late 19th century whose father had died from smallpox touched Santa with a heartfelt letter, receiving gifts and help. Chief Elf Pat Koch in Santa Claus, Indiana, shares a letter from the 1930s depression where a young girl asks for clothes and help for her family rather than toys and sweets.

In the UK, we join Yorkshire school children in Sheffield as they write their letters.

And back in Lapland, Miles takes a trip through snowy landscape on a reindeer sled as he prepares for a visit to the grotto of the Big Man himself.

With thanks to

For singer and songwriter Katie Melua it's the carol that awoke her love of music as an eight year-old in Belfast and for Tymara Walker it's the Christmas family favourite which went viral when she sang it on a Washington subway, reaching a worldwide audience millions on social media.

The Mystery of the Teenage Brain

Why do my teens struggle to get out of bed in the morning? Drs Rutherford and Fry investigate adolescence.

‘Why are teens prone to risky behaviour?’ asks Dr Mark Gallaway, ‘especially when with their friends?’ 13 year old Emma wonders why she’s chatty at school but antisocial when she gets home. And exasperated mum Michelle wants to know why her teens struggle to get out of bed in the morning.

Swirling hormones and growing bodies have a lot to answer for but, as Professor of Psychology from the University of Cambridge Sarah-Jayne Blakemore explains, there’s also a profound transformation going on in the brain.

Hannah and Adam discover how the adolescent brain is maturing and rewiring at the cellular level and why evolution might have primed teens to prefer their peers over their parents. Frances Jensen, Professor of Neurology at the University of Pennsylvania, tells us how all these brain changes can impact social relationships. And Dr Rachel Sharman, a sleep researcher from the University of Oxford, reports the surprising findings from her sleep study tracking 100 teenagers around the UK.
