SATURDAY 09 DECEMBER 2023

SAT 00:00 Fyodor Dostoyevsky - The Double (m0010nn9)
Jonathan Holloway reimagines Fyodor Dostoyevsky's nightmare vision.

A lonely civil servant is driven to madness when his life is stolen by a doppelganger.

It's relocated it to a steampunk version of 19th Century St Petersburg, substituting the labyrinthine Tsarist bureaucracy of the original with the advanced computer systems office of the Russian Federation's Intelligence Services.

To win his superiors' admiration the story's hero, Golyadkin, starts working on perfecting a new cyber-weapon only to find that a new arrival in the office who looks remarkably like him is taking all the credit for his work.

In this fresh adaptation the 21st century begins to intrude - samovars bubble, dances mix trance with live string quartets, electric taxis whine on the highways while horses clatter by and computers are gas-fuelled.

In Golyadkin's fractured mind he's lost all sense of where he exists in time and what we're experiencing is his dream of the future.

Dostoyevsky's themes of grinding bureaucracy, societal pressures inducing feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness are given a bleakly modern twist.

"7". TV ballroom dance judge Len Goodman shares his castaway choices with Kirsty Young.

Len became a star of BBC TV's 'Strictly Come Dancing' and the US show 'Dancing with the Stars', after a 40-year career as a ballroom dancer and judge.

Born in London's East End, as a kid he was a barrow-boy, selling fruit and veg on his grandfather's stall. He went on to work on the docks as a welder. But come Saturday night he would don his best threads and head for the Embassy ballroom in Welling.

It was later in life, when Len found international fame and it was, he says, perfect timing.

"If it had happened when I was 30, I'd have been one of these people that would be seen rolling out of nightclubs drunk, with a couple of dolly-birds on my arm. The pilot was on my 60th birthday and I think it was the perfect age because I was sensible by then, my feet were planted firmly on the ground."

Cicada

One of the great wild sounds of North America is the purring of insects in the evening, especially that of Cicadas, one of the great stridulating sounds in the wild.

This is the tale of one Cicada; the 17-year periodic Cicada that stunned the community in New England 13 years after the Pilgrim Fathers had landed. There was a plague of insects, all with red eyes on stalks - and all emerging continuously out of the soil.

When the plague subsided a few weeks later the people of Plymouth Rock were braced for another onslaught, but nothing happened until 17 years later.

Sir David Attenborough recalls a filming trip to New England to film this species of Cicada with both fascinating natural history and a hilarious twist.

Lily Allen (A-side)

Singer-songwriter Lily Allen talks about her fourth, and most personal album, 'No Shame'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Lily chats to John Wilson.

Always conversational in tone and infused with a dark sense of humour, Lily Allen’s lyrics never shy away from the personal – and her 2018 album is no different. Set against dancehall and reggae influences, the album moved away from her usual witty, sarcastic, song writing style and opted for a more "candid" approach.

With tracks like ‘Trigger Bang’, ‘Lost My Mind’, ‘Three’ and the album title track, she tackles everything from the breakdown of her marriage and her friendships… to maternal guilt, substance abuse and, as if that’s not enough, social and political issues.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Producer: Paul Kobrak

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2018.

3. Inspiration

Of all weathers, snow is the one that has always affected the author Marcus Sedgwick the most.

Five years ago, he and his partner bought a mountain house, an old chalet d’alpage high in the Haute Savoie (an alpine department of the eastern France bordering both Switzerland and Italy).

The book explores the art, literature and science of snow, as well as Marcus Sedgwick’s own experiences and memories, asking whether it really did snow more during his boyhood in Kent and whether changing climate patterns might mean snow becomes a thing of the past for many of us.

Marcus Sedgwick muses on why snow is so powerful to our imagination and so transformative.

Today he explores how snow has inspired artists, musicians and filmmakers looking at the vividly 'cold' paintings of Bruegel, Schubert's beautiful but bleak Winterreise, and Werner Herzog's Of Walking in Ice created as he walked from Munich to Paris in late November to visit the dying Lottie Eisner.

Marcus Sedgwick is best known as a children's author. He is the winner of many prizes, most notably the Michael L. Printz Award 2014, for his novel Midwinterblood. Marcus has also received two Printz Honors, for Revolver in 2011 and The Ghosts of Heaven in 2016. Other notable awards include Floodland, Marcus’ first novel, which won the Branford-Boase Award in 2001, a prize for the best debut novel for children. His books have been shortlisted for over forty other awards, including the Carnegie Medal (six times), the Edgar Allan Poe Award (twice) and the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize (four times). He has twice been nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, in 2016 and 2017

Judy Garland: The Final Rainbow

Renée Zellweger introduces a programme exploring Judy Garland's last concerts at London's the Talk of The Town in 1969 - the subject of a new feature film.

Weaving together newly restored archive recordings and eye-witness accounts, we separate the woman from the myth, examine her exceptional talent, exploitation and troubled relationship with Hollywood.

Judy Garland was one of the 20th century's greatest entertainers. A living legend. But in late December 1968, embattled and in poor health, she arrived in London for a five week run at the Talk of The Town in Leicester Square, for £2,500 a week. London was her place of sanctuary, she had performed spectacular comeback concerts in the city in 1951, 1957, 1960 and 1964.

When Renée Zellweger was preparing to play Judy in a new biopic, directed by Rupert Goold, little-heard archive concert recordings and first hand accounts were key to understanding the singer's state of mind during those final performances. Judy Garland died of an accidental overdose in her Chelsea home six months later, aged 47.

Rosalyn Wilder was the young production assistant tasked with getting Judy on stage each night at the Talk of The Town. Looking back now, Rosalyn describes the stress of that responsibility, but she is also deeply sympathetic - it was clear Judy's personal life had spiralled out of control. Michael Hirst, the venue's general manager, also remembers Garland's 5 week engagement for its unpredictability.

For jazz pianist Dave Lee, now 93, his experiences working with Judy couldn't be more different. Starting in 1960, he worked with her over a six year period. The Judy Garland he encountered was bouncy, happy and fun - but with an incredible talent for picking the wrong men.

We also hear from Judy director Rupert Goold, New York composer Johnny Meyer who gave Garland shelter in the summer of 1968, film critic David Benedict, and audio engineer John Haley who has restored many rare Judy Garland recordings.

Five years ago, Marcus Sedgewick moved to an old chalet d'alpage high up in the Haute-Savoie (an alpine department of the eastern France bordering both Switzerland and Italy). Here for the first time he understands how snow can really shape the rhythms of daily life and during his first full winter in the mountains, he appreciates the hard daily labour involved in clearing proper alpine snow from the path outside his house.

Marcus Sedgwick is best known as a children's author. He is the winner of many prizes, most notably the Michael L. Printz Award 2014, for his novel Midwinterblood. Hillary also took a tractor to the South Pole in 1958 and became High Commissioner to India in 1985

"I did a good job on Everest," Hillary once said, "but have always known my limitations and I found being classified as a hero slightly embarrassing."

Award-winning author-comedian Sofie Hagen examines society’s relationship with fat people and, with her infectious wit, sets a funny and impassioned agenda for moving beyond mere body positivity to a better world for everyone - fat or not.

Fatphobia is one of the last acceptable prejudices in a world that should really know better. Society continues to send poisonous messages about weight and size, causing widespread misery and mental illness, and dangerously skewing the priorities of millions of young people.

Sofie Hagen, the brilliant comedian and author of last year’s hugely successful manifesto Happy Fat, asks what it really means to love your body at any size, and sets out a vision for a world where people aren't defined by their bodies.

A personal, fiercely funny examination of a subject everyone else is scared to talk about.

FRI 20:00 Mark Watson's Inner Child (b08295s0)
Being grown-up is too boring. Is that the thinking behind the current trend in 'kiddult' activity - where adults play kids' games and generally get in touch with their 'inner child'?

Comedian Mark Watson finds no shortage of evidence for this trend - the programme features adult 'days in the woods' in Corby for grown-ups who like climbing trees and making dens, there are play gyms for those who want to dress up or rediscover Lego. We find some women in Bristol who like opening their colouring books in a pub, cafes that serve nothing but the breakfast cereals of your youth, playdays for adults in urban parks, to say nothing of swings and slides and the set of musical see-saws that are currently being enjoyed by adults in Leicester Square.

Mark is out and about with his own inner child, playing 'hedgehogs' with grown-ups and sampling the pleasures of a 'board games cafe'.

Philosopher Susan Neiman and Psychologist Oliver James offer their interpretations of this contemporary phenomenon.

Producer: Susan Marling

A Just Radio production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2016.

FRI 20:30 Soul Music (m000qjdr)
I Wonder as I Wander

As Christmas approaches, Soul Music leads you through Advent with the Appalachian carol "I Wonder as I Wander".

Written by American folklorist and singer John Jacob Niles, its origins come from a song fragment collected in 1933. Mysterious, inspiring, this traditional Christmas carol reflects on the nativity and the nature of wondering.

While in the town of Murphy in Appalachian North Carolina, Niles attended a fundraising meeting held by evangelicals who had been ordered out of town by the police. He wrote of hearing the song:

“A girl had stepped out to the edge of the little platform attached to the automobile. She began to sing. Her clothes were unbelievably dirty and ragged, and she, too, was unwashed. Her ash-blond hair hung down in long skeins. ... she was beautiful, and in her untutored way, she could sing. She smiled as she sang, smiled rather sadly, and sang only a single line of a song”.

The girl, named Annie Morgan, repeated the fragment seven times in exchange for a quarter per performance, and Niles left with "three lines of verse, and a magnificent idea". Based on this fragment, Niles composed the version of "I Wonder as I Wander" that is known today.

This most unusual of carols touches people in different ways. With childhood memories from a 1960’s RAF base in Oxfordshire, a Nigerian school girl who found her place in Winchester Cathedral, reflections from a candlelit vigil in an Appalachian town, and a Christmas gift as described by world renowned singer Melanie Marshall.

Guests: Performer Melanie Marshall, Ron Pen (biographer John Jacob Niles), Viva Choir member Louise Sheaves, author Chibundu Onuzo and music scholar John McClain. Featuring music from John Rutter and Burl Ives.

Consultant: Ted Olson.

FRI 22:00 Scott Bennett: Stuff (m001t93g)
Before becoming an award-winning comedian Scott Bennett was an award-winning product designer, a career he gave up to avoid workplace pressure and constant scrutiny. In his time, Scott has designed everything from water cans and hydraulic lifting systems to storage boxes and, in one instance, a flat-pack bondage cage.

As a former product designer, Scott now feels guilty about the part he’s played in how consumerism impacts the world we live in. He asks whether it’s possible to live a simple life when our lives are filled with so much, and probably too much, stuff.

In this bespoke show recorded at The Stand in Newcastle, Scott takes aim at the mindfulness industry, smart technology, aspirational lifestyles, product packaging and, his new bugbear, paper straws.

Written and performed by Scott Bennett

On-location recording by Mark Burrows

Sound editing by Kevin Bailey
