SATURDAY 26 AUGUST 2023

SAT 00:00 Jokester by Isaac Asimov (b007jwnj)
In the not too distant future, technology has advanced to the point where global affairs are now managed by a huge computer called Multivac.

It can provide the answers to all questions - from what to have for breakfast, to the meaning of life.

Where does man's sense of humour come from?

What if it's the product of some secret anthropological study and what happens when this secret is uncovered?

Tongue and Talk - The Dialect Poets: North West

Poet Daljit Nagra revisits the BBC's poetry archives and selects Tongue and Talk - The Dialect Poets, from a series exploring dialect poetry in different parts of England.

Actor and writer Catherine Harvey returns to her roots in north west England to see if the dialect poetry of the cotton mills of 19th Century Lancashire is still alive today.

The Lancashire dialect poets were once household names and their writings articulated the voices of cotton weavers and mill workers in Victorian industrial Lancashire with a mixture of humour and pathos. Catherine Harvey says,

"The vivid dialect remains with me, not as something quaintly archaic but present now in the way I speak and write, their voices resonating in the language heard around the north west today."

Producers: Ian Mackness, Catherine Harvey and Ashley Byrne

A Made in Manchester production for BBC Radio 4 first broadcast in 2018.

SUN 06:30 Born Lippy by Jo Brand (Omnibus) (m0001h0d)
Jo Brand turns advice giver in a typically irreverent guide to life.

She says she's messed up enough times to feel confident she has no wisdom to offer anyone. But who cares? She's going to do it anyway.

Once upon a (very, very) long time ago Jo Brand was what you might describe as "a nice little girl". Of course, that was before the values of cynicism, misogyny and the societal expectation that Jo would be thin, feminine and demure sent her off down Arsey Avenue.

The plot thickened when, due to a complicated fusion of hormones, horrible family dynamics and a no-good boyfriend they hated, Jo ended up leaving home at 16.

Now she's considerably further along life's inevitable journey and, in this memoir, she reveals a side of herself that we don’t normally hear - the things she wishes she'd known and the things she hopes for the future. As you’d expect, she pulls no punches.

Jo begins with the wisdom (or otherwise) of giving advice, and guidance on how to survive your family. Drawing on her own battlefield experiences, she suggests the best attitude to love and friendship and finding your way in the world while being kind and being different.

Whether it was her rebellious teenage years or moving from a nursing career to the stand-up comedy circuit, Jo knows that it’s hard to find out who and what you are, particularly in gaining equality for both sexes.

But she’s hopeful, as long as we’re on the same page (and that page isn’t 3), that there’s scope for great strides forward.

Omnibus of five parts written and read by Jo Brand.

Abridged and produced by Pippa Vaughan.

A Loftus Media production for BBC Radio 4, first broadcast in December 2018.

SUN 10:30 Seems Like a Nice Boy: The Story of Larry Grayson (b0076pz1)
Larry Grayson was one of Britain's most popular entertainers.

It could genuinely be said that fame, which he gained relatively late in life, did not change him one whit.

He was devoted to his adopted home town of Nuneaton in Warwickshire, and lived there for most of his life.

His early years were spent performing with a drag act in working men's clubs all over the English Midlands.

Then in 1971, he was seen performing as a stand-up comedian in London by Michael Grade, then an entertainments promoter. Grade offered Larry a 6-minute slot at the London Palladium, and the rest, as they say, is history.

In this profile of Larry, Jim Lee, Nuneaton-born and bred himself, recalls a comedian whose gently camp and inoffensive humour delighted audiences of all ages.

Michael Grade, Terry Wogan, Isla St Clair and Larry Grayson's nephew and biographer Mike Malyon are amongst those interviewed.

Larry was born 100 years ago on 31st August 1923. He died aged 71 in 1995.

Producer Libby Cross.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 2005.

TUE 07:15 Modern Morality Tales (b070n39l)
Justice by Lizzie Nunnery

Rebecca Front plays Eve in five stories about modern attitudes towards morality, inspired by medieval morality plays.

In this first tale, writer Lizzie Nunnery asks if justice can act fairly in a world of the haves and have nots?

In medieval times allegorical plays such as 'Mankind' and 'Everyman' were used to warn audiences that how they lived in the present would affect their afterlife - whether they would end up in Hell, Purgatory or Heaven. But in a secular age how do we deal with the nature of sins and virtues?

Our attitude to good and evil is certainly less black and white. Is it bad to be proud; don't we deserve respect? Can't anger be used to promote change for the better and isn't envy what drives our materialistic lifestyle?

These five tales explore our attitudes to these questions through the character of 'Eve', a 21st-century Everywoman, played by Rebecca Front.

Georgie Fame (the A Side)

Georgie Fame talks about his 1963 debut album, 'Rhythm & Blues At The Flamingo'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Georgie talks to John Wilson.

At the age of 16, former apprentice cotton weaver, Clive Powell, successfully auditioned for pop impresario Larry Parnes who then forced him to change his name to Georgie Fame.

After touring alongside Marty Wilde, Joe Brown, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, Georgie played the piano in Billy Fury’s backing band, the Blue Flames. By March 1962 it was Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames who began a three year residency at the Flamingo Club in London’s Soho.

Including tracks like ‘Night Train’, ‘Work Song’, ‘Baby, Please Don’t Go’ and ‘Do The Dog’, 'Rhythm And Blues at the Flamingo' captured the vibrancy and excitement of the famous and notorious club which played a significant part in the breakdown of racial prejudice in post-war British society.

Here Georgie Fame talks candidly with John Wilson about the album that started it all and, together with some of the original Blue Flames (including guitarist Colin Green, saxophonist Mick Eve and trumpeter Eddie 'Tan Tan' Thornton) as well as his two sons Tristan and James Powell, play exclusive versions of some of the key tracks.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

Producer: Paul Kobrak

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2015.

Instalment 1

When the whole world ground to a Covid-fuelled viral halt - world-renowned storyteller David Sedaris recorded this special series of entertaining essays and diary entries at his Sussex home.

Series 8 kicks off with more of David’s sardonic wit and incisive social critiques.

* Recipe For Disaster
* Nailed
* Must Everything Go?

David Sedaris first shared his very particular world view having brought us The SantaLand Diaries back in 1996.

David has become one of America’s pre-eminent humour writers and, in 2019, was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that he's a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.

WED 07:15 Modern Morality Tales (b07054l7)
Pride by Al Smith

Mrs Eve is the head of an exclusive public school instilling pride and ambition in their pupils, but her lack of respect for one of her former charges is the basis of a shaming encounter.

Inspired by medieval morality plays, Al Smith takes a look at the most venous of sins, Pride.

Is it bad to be proud, don't we deserve respect? Can't anger be used to promote change for the better and isn't envy what drives our materialistic lifestyle?

These five tales explore our attitudes to these questions through the character of 'Eve', a 21st-century Everywoman, played by Rebecca Front.

Dickie Attenborough: A Life in Film

In a career that encompassed acting, producing and directing, Richard Attenborough was a mainstay of the British film industry.

In fact, for at least 20 years, he was arguably the British film industry.

At the time when Attenborough began directing films, starting with Oh What a Lovely War in 1969, British film was reaching an all time nadir. Attenborough helped to bring it back from the brink.

Inheriting a steadfast belief in citizenship and social responsibility, Dickie or Dick (as he was known by his friends) threw his phenomenal energy and determination into making films like Gandhi and Cry Freedom, the latter telling the story of the anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko and the journalist Donald Woods. He didn’t set out to make box office hits, yet Gandhi played for weeks at the Odeon Leicester Square and won eight Oscars including best actor for Ben Kingsley.

Kingsley, Anthony Hopkins, David Puttnam, William Goldberg and the late John Mills all join in celebrating Attenborough’s skill as a director of actors, his stamina and his huge commitment to the British film industry.

Susan Marling (who met and recorded with Attenborough before he died) asks what his legacy has been.

Born 100 years ago on the 9th August 1923, Lord Richard Attenborough died aged 90 on 24th August 2014.

Be warned: 'The worst wolves are hairy on the inside'.

Lustful desires explored in this re-working of the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale by Angela Carter.

Here's what the Radio Times thought:

"This BBC7-commissioned reading by Amanda Root is entirely faithful to Carter's short story and doesn't disappoint on the chill-and-psychological-thrill front. The young girl who wanders from the path in a forest full of bestial dangers ends up living a life that goes against everything we ever took away from Little Red Riding Hood - never have the basic needs of a wild wolf seemed so irresistibly attractive."

Producer: Gemma Jenkins

Made for BBC 7 and first broadcast in October 2003.

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme was described by The Radio Times as "the best sketch show in years, on television or radio", and by The Daily Telegraph as "funny enough to make even the surliest cat laugh". Wrath by Roy Williams

Eve finds herself overcome with anger on the day that she is made redundant. But does her anger necessarily have to have a destructive end?

Inspired by the medieval morality plays. Roy Williams presents a character whose anger at the inhuman nature of modern life moves her to an act of protest.

The Weirdness of Water Part 1/2

“I don’t really understand why water has so many properties on different scales ranging from very large and cosmic to very small quantum and quarky - Could you help by zooming in and out on water to explain what is known about it? Asks Neil Morton in Stirling. Rutherford and Fry learn about the special hydrogen bonds that makes water such an unusual liquid.

Quantum physicist Professor Patricia Hunt, at the Victoria University in Wellington in New Zealand explains to Hannah the quantum properties of individual water molecules and how they link up with other water molecules in liquid water and solid ice. She describes the hydrogen bonds that give water some of it’s weird and wonderful properties such as why ice floats, why water is able to store huge amounts of heat and why water has such a strong surface tension.

Science writer and author of ‘H2O – a biography of water’ Philip Ball describes how in the 18th century it was discovered that water was not one of the classical elements, but a compound liquid of water and hydrogen and explains to Adam why there are at least 15 different types of ice.

Episode 1

Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders star as respected novelist Florence and movie star Selina, in a sparkling comedy series about two sisters at war, by Veep writer David Quantick.

Florence (Dawn French) and Selina (Jennifer Saunders) are nominated for a writer’s prize and the contest becomes a battle between the two sisters. Florence is invited to the Hay Book Festival as she’s been nominated for the prestigious Bronte shield – but Florence’s joy and delight turn to anger and disappointment when Selina is also nominated, for her kiss and tell autobiography, Kiss And Tell. “The leads’ natural chemistry, plus David Quantick’s witty script… make for an enjoyable comedy with series potential” The Observer

“It’s as slick, dark and funny as one would expect – but surely this cannot be a one-off? The ending alone leaves us begging for a series” Radio Times
