SAT 07:30 The Pianist of Yarmouk (Omnibus) (m0003sk6)
Ammar Haj Ahmad reads Aeham Ahmad’s dramatic account of how he risked his life under siege in Damascus to defy the Syrian regime with his music.

Newly married, living in a comfortable Damascus suburb and working as a music teacher, Aeham’s life is turned upside down by the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2012.

When they are bombed out of their apartment, Aeham and his family take refuge in their music shop in the ramshackle district of Yarmouk. But soon the rebel Free Syrian Army takes control and President Assad’s forces are determined to bomb, shoot and starve them out, regardless of the plight of the ordinary residents.

When the siege began, the power was turned off and food prices exploded. Soon, people started dying of hunger. Over these five episodes, Aeham tells how he fought to keep his family alive and how, in his anger and frustration, he eventually pushed his piano onto the streets and brought music to the desperate people of Yarmouk.

However, when ISIS take over he has to make the agonizing choice between staying in Syria and certain death or making the perilous journey to Europe alone and abandoning his family.

‘The Pianist of Yarmouk’ is read by Ammar Haj Ahmad, who trained as an actor before fleeing the conflict in Syria. He starred in the critically acclaimed play The Jungle, set in the notorious Calais refugee camp, in London and New York.

Written by Aeham Ahmad.

VI Warshawski …… Kathleen Turner
Lotty …… Eleanor Bron
Bobby Mallory …… William Hootkins

Sara Paretsky has created one of the most popular female sleuths in modern crime-fiction. VI Warshawski is a strong female character in a male-dominated world. She’s comfortable packing heat and trailing nasty suspects, but never loses touch with her basic femininity.

Paretsky says of her Warshawski: "I was troubled by the way women were portrayed in (detective fiction) they always seemed either evil or powerless. I thought it was time for a tough, smart, likeable female private investigator".

Kathleen Turner also starred in the same role in the 1991 film 'VI Warshawski'.

MON 07:00 An Invitation to Indian Cooking by Madhur Jaffrey (m000rty2)
1. Delhi

Madhur Jaffrey is a well-known writer and performer, whose work was seminal in introducing Indian and Asian cooking to the USA and UK.

Her first cookbook, An Invitation to Indian Cooking, was an instant hit, in 1973.

By then, Ms Jaffrey was already a Broadway name, living in New York. The Jaffreys' dinner parties were hugely popular, in part because of Madhur’s wonderful cooking, and attended by many celebrities, such as Merchant and Ivory.

She made her name from her family recipes, sent by her mother in letters from home, and their enthusiastic reception culminated in An Invitation to Indian Cooking.

Madhur Jaffrey takes us back to her childhood in Delhi, where her love of food was equalled by her love of acting, with Marlon Brando her cinematic role model.

Madhur Jaffrey …… Archie Panjabi
Ismail Merchant …… Raj Ghatak
Kashmiran Rani (Madhur’s mother) …… Balvinder Sopal
Mrs McKelvie …… Rina Mahoney

Leading dramatist Anjum Malik has used this iconic cookbook to create a drama series charting how the book came about.

Just as importantly, it maps Madhur’s acting career, from her childhood love of acting, through training at RADA, and on to her success in global cinema, winning the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her performance in Shakespeare Wallah, at the 1965 Berlin Film Festival.

Producer: Polly Thomas

Past Tense, Future Perfect

True stories told live in the USA: Meg Bowles introduces stories about moments and memories that mould the future.

The Moth is an acclaimed not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling based in the USA. Since 1997, it has celebrated both the raconteur and the storytelling novice, who has lived through something extraordinary and yearns to share it. Originally formed by the writer George Dawes Green as an intimate gathering of friends on a porch in Georgia (where moths would flutter in through a hole in the screen), and then recreated in a New York City living room,

The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

Featuring true stories told live on stage without scripts, from the humorous to the heart-breaking.

The Moth Radio Hour is produced by Jay Allison and Atlantic Public Media in Woods Hole, Massachusetts and is distributed by the Public Radio Exchange.

Noel Gallagher (the A-Side)

'Noel Gallagher's discusses his album High Flying Birds.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Noel talks to John Wilson.

In 2009, Noel Gallagher left Oasis – one of the seminal bands of the Britpop era with seven multi-platinum albums including: 'Definitely Maybe', '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' and 'Be Here Now' – which became the fastest selling album in UK chart history.

Two years later Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds also went to Number 1 in the UK with tracks like "Everybody's On the Run", "AKA... What A Life!" and "The Death of You and Me". Praised for its psychedelic tinges and eternal themes of love, loss and hope, it's been described as the best collection of songs "since his Morning Glory days".

With tracks inspired by New Orleans ragtime rhythms and Ennio Morricone-like strings, it put paid to rumours that its creator entered into a state of inertia after the end of Oasis.

Noel Gallagher said of the album: "I won't criticize anything about Oasis because I loved being in that band and I was in charge of it, but there was always the feeling: how will this go down in Wembley, with 70,000 people braying for good times? This time I didn't have to think about that. I've got a guy playing wine glasses on one song, a saw on another. This is not Oasis."

Producer: Paul Kobrak

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in December 2014.

Madhur Jaffrey finds herself in New York, working on Broadway, married and starting a family. She begins a lifelong friendship with Ismail Merchant and together they start to make ambitious plans for the film Shakespeare Wallah.

Ismail Merchant …… Raj Ghatak
Kashmiran Rani (Madhur’s mother) …… Balvinder Sopal

Leading dramatist Anjum Malik has used this iconic cookbook to create a drama series charting how the book came about but, just as importantly, mapping Ms Jaffrey’s acting career, from her childhood love of acting, through training at RADA, and on to her success in global cinema, winning the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her performance in Shakespeare Wallah, at the Berlin Film Festival in 1965.

Pevsner: Through Outsider's Eyes

Tom Dyckhoff goes in search of Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, the art historian and perennial outsider who did more than anyone else in recent memory to open our eyes to the art and architecture of Britain.

Pevsner was an arch-classifier - rigorous and systematic - and when he turned his gaze towards architecture he saw not just buildings but a morality play – a story of identity, of imagined pasts and possible futures.

Arguably his greatest achievement - and the one for which he's best remembered - is the Buildings of England series of guidebooks.

For nearly thirty years Pevsner buckled up and took to the highways and by-ways on an obsessive architectural stock take that covered the whole of England, county by county. The 46 volumes he put together combine into a kind of an architectural Domesday Book – the most detailed inventory of British architecture ever published. The Buildings of Scotland and Wales would follow. The series is still on-going, still being revised and updated.

Guidebooks, churches, country houses. Cosy stuff. But there are bigger things at stake when we look back at Pevsner's life and work. It provides a lens through which to view ourselves - and to think about how others see us. And Pevsner may seem like a nostalgic, tweedy figure from a distance, but up close we can see - and hear - someone much more interesting than that.

Sir Nikolaus worked his way to the centre of British society, living through a testing of what it meant to be English and British, during the Second World War. But he never stopped being an outsider.

Featuring writer and cultural historian Ian Buruma; Pevsner's biographer Susie Harries; writer and architect Charles Jencks; David Matless, geographer and author of Landscape and Englishness; media historian Jean Seaton; and Neil Stratford, one-time driver and assistant to Pevsner on three of his journeys for the Buildings of England.

Producer: Martin Williams

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 2016.

WED 21:00 What's Funny About ... (m000zsns)
Series 2

1. Ricky Gervais on The Office

Ricky Gervais is the man who created, wrote, directed, and starred in what is, by any metric you’d care to measure it, one of the most influential sitcoms of the 21st century - The Office.

Ricky shares the inside story with TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman.

Discover what Ricky's challenges were of getting The Office commissioned and made, and the very real fear that the audience would think it was just another docu-soap, and simply wouldn’t realise it was a sitcom.

Ricky also talks about how he crafted many of the show’s most famous moments and reveals how a combination of Homer Simpson, James Cagney, and a bloke with a pony tail who worked at a temp agency in Reading, all helped inspire the character of David Brent.

What’s Funny About is the series where Peter and Jon talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

Producer: Owen Braben

An Expectation production for BBC Radio 4 Extra, first broadcast in September 2021.

3. Sally Phillips & Victoria Pile on Smack The Pony

Sally Phillips and Victoria Pile variously created, wrote, and starred in Channel 4's award-winning sketch show Smack The Pony.

The duo share the inside story with TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman.

When Smack The Pony debuted in 1999, the critics talked about it being a “female” sketch show. Which was right in as much as it starred and was run by women, and it pushed back against the male gaze which had so dominated the world of British comedy for so long.

But of course, it also rather missed the point – it wasn’t a female sketch show. It was a brilliant, edgy, silly, and gloriously funny sketch show.

Victoria and Sally discuss the challenges the show faced on its journey from a small idea pitched (by a man!) at a fancy Park Lane supper, to its BAFTA and Emmy success. They talk us through some of their favourite sketches and reveal how they created their vast array of characters. And they talk about the possibility of more episodes of Smack The Pony ever finding their way on to our screens.

FRI 22:00 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m001pm85)
Series 2

Llandudno to Cardiff

Comedy icon Alexei Sayle continues his series of rail journeys with a north to south trip across Wales from Llandudno to Cardiff

Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers, in a quest for conversations with strangers that will reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations.

Along the way, Alexei holds a finger into the wind of the thoughts and moods of the great British travelling public. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people reveal what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also delves into his own personal stories of a childhood in Liverpool and a long career as a comedian, actor and author.

Alexei has a life-long ticket to ride in his DNA, as his father was a railway guard. As a child, Alexei travelled on trains with his mum and dad, not only in the UK but also abroad. While other children in Liverpool at the time thought a trip to Blackpool was a big adventure, Alexei travelled to Paris, experienced the Orient Express, had summer holidays in Czechoslovakia and visited mysterious cities with unpronounceable names in the farthest corners of Europe.

In this programme, Alexei meets Mags, Karen, Anne and Nicky who call themselves the ‘cycling widows’ and are determined to enjoy themselves while their partners are off on two wheels somewhere; 16 year-olds Isaac and Finlay are aspiring footballers and share their dreams with Alexei of one day playing in the Premier League and for their country; Dewi is travelling to a retreat for help with his mental health problems; and Sarah and David surprise Alexei with their tales of long distance rail travel – including a trip on the Trans-Siberian Express fuelled only by pot noodles and vodka and thousands of miles in India in second class carriages meeting some of the 23 million people who take a train there every day.

A Ride production for BBC Radio 4

At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.

Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.

Written and performed by Sarah Kendall
Producer: Carl Cooper
Production Coordinator: Emily Hallett

A BBC Studios Production for Radio 4, first broadcast in March 2017.

The St George's Flag

Comedian Richard Herring reclaims those things we have given a bad name to.

Today he's reclaiming the English National Flag from any associations with far right extremists. Why does the man and woman on the street have no idea when St George's day is? Who is St George?

Richard asks a vexillologist (flag expert) about how flags have come to symbolise nations. He also talks to anthropologist Kate Fox who has studied the behaviour of the English, about why the English are not natural flag waving patriots. The show was recorded in front of an audience.

Producer: Tilusha Ghelani
