SAT 00:00 Metropolis (m001p7vh)
**** This programme was suggested by Walter Shultz as part of BBC Radio 4 Extra’s All Request Weekend ****

Freder, the protagonist of Metropolis is an underworked "captain" in a high level position in the futuristic consumer society of the mega city named Metropolis.

Feeling suicidal, but unable to understand why, Freder switches identities with a low level "product insertion" - a kind of telemarketing.

Failing at that, Freder soon finds himself working for Maria, an imperfect beauty with all the answers. Maria plunges Freder into the depths of her underground conspiracy to disrupt the workings of society.

Thea von Harbou's 1925 novel became husband Fritz Lang's 1927 silent movie classic.

Its terrifying vision of the future was born in an age of booming heavy industry.

Peter Straughan's new version finds its hero, caught up in a nightmarish world all too recognisably drawn from the one we find ourselves in today.

The premier comedy-economics hybrid is tackling the big, competing theories of Macro Economics.

These are little short of religions to their proponents, and the figures who devised them dominate the intellectual landscape in a way that mere politicians can only dream of. These are the Big Beards, the Glinting Eyes, the Bristling Moustaches and Eyebrows of "Worldly Philosophy" and their insights, calculations and hallucinations remain as contentious today as they were when first inked into place.

In this series Simon Evans, with the help of Undercover Economist, Tim Harford will advance through the modern industrial era using three great beacons as their guide - Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes - and reflect on how they continue to shape our world today.

After three episodes focusing on the lives and theories of Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes, it's time for Simon and Tim to attempt synthesis and see how these three economic superbrains can help us out of our current economic predicament.

The Moth quickly grew to produce immensely popular events at theatres and clubs around New York City and later around the USA, the UK and other parts of the world.

The Moth has presented more than 15,000 stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. The Moth podcast is downloaded over 27 million times a year.

The Boomtown Rats (the A-Side)

The Boomtown Rats discuss their 1978 second album 'A Tonic for the Troops'.

Series in which leading performers and songwriters talk about the album that made them or changed them.

Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios, each edition includes two episodes - the A-side and B-side.

In the A-side, Bod Geldof and The Boomtown Rats talk to John Wilson.

Named after a gang in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, the band had a series of hits between 1977 and 1985. Signed by Mercury records the same year that punk rock exploded in Britain, it was their second album 'A Tonic for the Troops', with tracks like "She's So Modern", "Like Clockwork" and "Me and Howard Hughes", that brought them their first Number 1 hit with "Rat Trap".

It's an album that treats dark themes like suicide and euthanasia in an often upbeat, pop-punk style - one critic described the track "Eva Braun" as "the happiest, cheeriest, best upbeat song about Hitler ever written." And another said "Vintage superstars who look like eyesores and sound like dinosaurs should carefully study this album."

The band broke-up in 1986, but reformed in 2013 to tour the UK. This will be a unique opportunity not only to hear them talk about their album but also to see them perform exclusive versions of key tracks.

In the B-side of the programme, it's the turn of the audience to ask the questions.

3. Decline

Handel’s music triumphs at the coronation of a new king but his operatic fortunes at the Royal Academy take a turn for the worse with the rise of a new English rival: ballad opera.

Jane Glover's Handel in London tells the story of a young German composer who in 1712, followed his princely master to London and would remain there for the rest of his life.

That master would become King George II and the composer was George Frederic Handel. He would be at the heart of musical activity in London for the next four decades, composing masterpiece after masterpiece, whether the glorious coronation anthem, Zadok the Priest, operas such as Giulio Cesare and Alcina or the great oratorios, culminating, of course, in Messiah.

Jane Glover, who has conducted Handel’s work in opera houses and concert halls throughout the world, draws on her profound understanding of music and musicians to tell Handel’s story.

Featuring music from Handel’s vast output.

Abridged by Eileen Horne.

Virtues of Vulnerability with Ed Balls

For Ed Balls, the decision to talk publicly about his stammer was pivotal. As a politician, displaying vulnerability was almost unthinkable. Ed's decision turned out to be a good one, but opening up in this way had risks, and things might have been different.

In this personal programme, Ed talks to people from sport, politics, business and media, hearing how they dealt with life’s challenges, displaying their vulnerability, often in full public view.

Ed speaks to Michael Palin, Facebook's Nicola Mendelsohn, one of the most powerful women in tech; politician Paula Sherriff, Paralympian and Strictly Come Dancing star Will Bayley, journalist Nick Robinson, and writer and activist Scarlett Curtis.

Through archive and original interviews, Ed revisits past moments of vulnerability, including his own, speaking to those involved to shed fresh light on the pitfalls and benefits of displaying one’s vulnerable side.

WED 21:00 What's Funny About ... (m000k22t)
Series 1

W1A - with Hugh Bonneville and John Morton

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Hugh Bonneville and John Morton about W1A, their much loved satire of the BBC.

They discuss where the idea for W1A came from (there is, you’ll be pleased to hear, a fold up bike involved). John reveals which BBC grandee offered his services when it came to researching the show. Hugh talks about the challenges of playing Ian Fletcher and Downton’s Earl of Grantham, often at the same time (and how it all actually helped W1A to prise a bit more cash out of the BBC!). And we hear what Ian Fletcher might be doing next.

With Peter and Jon as our guides, we’ll take the opportunity to ask quite how they went about making a great bit of TV comedy. Who came up with it? How did it get written? We’ll talk about the commissioning, the casting, and the reception the show received when it first aired.

We’ll do our very best to winkle out some backstage secrets straight from the horse’s mouth, as we hear the unvarnished truth from the people who were there, and who put these iconic shows on the telly.

Original W1A clips written by John Morton

Producer: Owen Braben

Made for BBC Radio 4 Extra by Expectation Productions, and first broadcast in June 2020.

THU 07:00 Handel in London - The Making of a Genius by Jane Glover (m0001krb)
4. Messiah

Handel’s operatic rivals struggle while he suffers from health problems before travelling to Ireland to present a new work, an oratorio based on biblical texts he calls Messiah.

Goodness Gracious Me - with Meera Syal and Anil Gupta

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Meera Syal and Anil Gupta about their ground breaking sketch show Goodness Gracious Me.

They discuss the impact the show had on popular culture and how they feel they were treated by the BBC, the broken video camera at their first-ever showcase that meant that Goodness Gracious Me very nearly never happened, and what sort of show Meera thinks the GGM team should get back together and make.

Every day, Mary Ann Sieghart blanks friends and colleagues in the street - some people think she is the rudest woman they know. She also claims to be the 'worst lobby correspondent in the world'.

She has prosopagnosia, more commonly known as face blindness. Sufferers have problems perceiving or remembering faces.

Stephen Fry and former Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt are two of the well known people who have the condition and here they share how they've found ways of coping with it to get by in their careers.

In extreme cases, some sufferers don't recognise family members or even their own reflection. Concerns are rising that it could lead to issues in security, justice and misdiagnoses. Could technology or even hormonal treatments help improve her ability? Or will the best solution simply be to make people more aware?

The Thick of It - with Armando Iannucci and Rebecca Front

TV veterans Peter Fincham and Jon Plowman talk to the writers, producers, and performers behind Britain’s biggest TV comedy hits, and hear the inside story of how they brought their programmes to the screen.

In this episode, Peter and Jon talk to Armando Iannucci and Rebecca Front about their biting pollical satire The Thick Of It. Was Nicola Murray just a nice (if hapless) person, thrust into a nest of political vipers, or was she just as bad as the rest of them? Who came up with the line “about as much use as a marzipan dildo”? And who was Malcolm Tucker really based on? (It’s probably not who you think.)

FRI 22:00 Alexei Sayle's Strangers on a Train (m001pfcr)
Series 2

Exeter to Newquay

Comedy icon Alexei Sayle continues his series of rail journeys with a trip through Devon and Cornwall from Exeter to Newquay.

Alexei’s mission is to break the golden rule of travelling by train and actually talk to his fellow passengers, in a quest for conversations with strangers that will reveal their lives, hopes, dreams and destinations.

Along the way, Alexei holds a finger into the wind of the thoughts and moods of the great British travelling public. There’s humour, sadness and surprise as people reveal what is going on in their lives and, as Alexei passes through familiar towns and cities, he also delves into his own personal stories of a childhood in Liverpool and a long career as a comedian, actor and author.

Alexei has a life-long ticket to ride in his DNA, as his father was a railway guard. As a child, Alexei travelled on trains with his mum and dad, not only in the UK but also abroad. While other children in Liverpool at the time thought a trip to Blackpool was a big adventure, Alexei travelled to Paris, experienced the Orient Express, had summer holidays in Czechoslovakia and visited mysterious cities with unpronounceable names in the farthest corners of Europe.

In this programme, Alexei meets Finn who has swapped his job at Nandos for a life in the Royal Navy looking after helicopters; Andrew who is about to run up the Cornish coastal path to meet his girlfriend who is running down it the other way; Paula and James who share a love of music, especially in Paula’s case, the harpsichord; Julian who has just returned from being a volunteer crew member on an historic Brixham trawler; and Eta and Rowan who are both determined travellers and tell Alexei of a visit to Chernobyl - while Alexei surprises them with his own very unusual insight into the historic city of Petra in Jordan.

A Ride production for BBC Radio 4

FRI 22:30 Sarah Kendall: Australian Trilogy (b08gxx7p)
Series 1

Touchdown

"This show is a story, and our story starts at the end. My parents came to see one of my shows, and I would end this particular show by telling a story about the time I swore at a teacher..."

Starting with a short routine from her comedy club set, Sarah admits that like with most stand-up routines, it had a punchline manufactured for the sake of a joke. Her mum challenges her to tell everyone what really happened the day she swore at that teacher and the result is this show. Denied the quick fix of a fabricated punchline it is transformed into a full, honest, coming-of-age story that explores the clumsiness of adolescents, their awkward relationships, and painful need for friendship and love.

Multi-award winning storyteller Sarah Kendall brings her critically acclaimed trilogy of funny and moving, live shows to BBC Radio.

Taking her audience on a trip, Sarah gives a unique snapshot of small-town life in Australia in the early 90s.

At a time when most people were seeing Australians through the filter of 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours', Sarah's shows present a darker underbelly to the stereotype of the sun-loving, happy-go-lucky Aussie teenager.

Comedic and tragic in equal measure, Sarah's tales of her teenage life blend intricate narratives with a cast of memorable characters, bringing events to life in front of your very ears.
